Francis Haff

Rev. Francis Christian Haff, 93, of Potterville, passed away July 11, 2000.

Rev. Haff was born June 28, 1907 in Caladonia, the son of Israel and Inez (Jensen) Haff. He graduated from God’s Bible School and Cleveland Bible Institute, and was a member of the Lansing First Church of the Nazarene.

Surviving are son, Jon (Sandy) of Potterville; daughter, Gloria (Peter) Trumpower of Lakeview; nine grandchildren and 18 great-grandchildren.

He was preceded in death by his wife of 66 years, Frances Baker Haff in 1998; and, daughter, Jeanne in 1994.

Funeral services were held July 14 at Pray Funeral Home, Charlotte, with Rev. Dale Harvey, Rev. Arthur Salisbury, Rev. David Sutherland and Dr. Donald King officiating. Interment was at Woodlawn Cemetery, Vermontville.

If desired, memorial contributions may be made to Hospice of Lansing.

Genevieve Frances Hallifax

Genevieve Frances Hallifax, age 75 of Eaton Rapids, died Sunday, March 19, 2000. She was born October 22, 1924 in Slinger, Wisconsin, the daughter of Edward and Mabel (Graff) Kohl. Mrs. Hallifax was a graduate of Westbend High School (Wisconsin) class of 1943, she served as a WAVE in the U.S. Navy during World War II, and married Roger E. Hallifax on November 17, 1945. Mrs. Hallifax retired as an Accounting Executive for the State of Michigan serving 33 years. She and her husband were member of the Lansing Moose Lodge. Preceding her in death is her husband of 52 years, Roger in 1998.

Surviving are 5 daughters, Patricia (Donald) Buggia of DeWitt, Lois Hallifax of Lansing, Jane Hallifax Vedder of Portland, JoAnn (Lynn) Anderson of DeWitt and Julie “Casey” (Scott) Wooster of Chelsea; 5 grandchildren, Tammy and Jeffrey Anderson, Paige Vedder, Breanna and Carley Wooster; one sister, Eleanore Kustka of Green Bay, 4 brothers, Allen Kohl of Winterhaven, FL, Edward Kohl of Milwaukee, Tom Collins of Barton, FL, and Michael Collins of Westerville, OH; and many nieces and nephews.

Mass of the Christian Burial will be Wednesday, March 22nd at 11 a.m. from St. Peter Catholic Church in Eaton Rapids with Rev. Fr. Ben Constantine as celebrant. Visitation will be Tuesday evening from 6-9 p.m. with a Prayer Service at 6 p.m. at the Skinner Funeral Home in Eaton Rapids. For those desiring, a memorial contribution may be made to the Alzheimer’s Association in memory of Genevieve F. Hallifax.

Dorothy Halsey

Dorothy Halsey, 85, of Charlotte died March 18, 2000 at the Hospice House of Mid-Michigan, Lansing.

Mrs. Halsey was born in Eaton Township, Eaton County, the daughter of Clifton and Ruth (Creitz) Southworth, and was a lifelong Charlotte-area resident. She was a 1932 graduate of Charlotte High School, a former volunteer for the Eaton County Extension Service and a volunteer dispatcher for the former Bellevue Rescue Squad. She was a retired bookkeeper, having been employed by Bob Surine Auto Sales, Acme Bookkeeping and Wertz Implement Co., from which she retired in 1973. She was a devoted wife and mother, and, in later years, gifted crafter of leather, fabric and yarn. She married Victor Halsey Aug. 31, 1933.

She is survived by her husband, Victor; one daughter, Nancy Crane of Mio; two sons, John (Barbara) of Lansing, Ill., and Ronald (Martha) of Potterville; numerous grandchildren, great-grandchildren and great-great-grandchildren; and one sister, Eleanor Potocki of Hilton Head Island, N.C.

She was preceded in death by her parents; two sisters, Donis Lashbrook and Marion Heisler; and one step-brother, Darrell VanWey.

Services were March 21 at the Burkhead-Green Funeral Chapel, Charlotte, with the Rev. Thomas Peters officiating. Interment was in the Bosworth Cemetery, Olivet.

Anna A. Hamilton

Anna Alta Hamilton, 89, of Charlotte died July 27, 2000 at Thornapple Manor Nursing Home, Hastings, after a long illness.

Mrs. Hamilton was born in McKean County, Penn, the daughter of Rex and Emma (Franklin) Maxson, and had been a Charlotte resident since the late 1930s. She had worked at the former Wilcox-Gay in Charlotte and also as a babysitter. She was a member of the Charlotte Church of the Nazarene, where she served as secretary/treasurer of the Sunday School and had taught both Sunday and Bible school.

She is survived by one daughter, Joann (Almon) Sebolt of Charlotte; four grandchildren; and one brother, Morris (Ruth) Maxson of Hudson, Fla.

She was preceded in death by one sister, Vera Parker in 1993, and one brother, Dwellie Maxson in 1966.

Cremation has taken place. Memorial services were July 31 at the Charlotte Church of the Nazarene with Rev. Arthur Salisbury officiating. Inurnment of cremains was at Maple Hill Cemetery, Charlotte. Arrangements were made by the Burkhead-Green Funeral Home, Charlotte.

Memorial contributions may be made to the Charlotte Church of the Nazarene.

Alverna L. Hammerberg

Alverna Leota Hammerberg, 91, of Chelsea, formerly of Charlotte, died Aug. 4, 2000 at Chelsea Retirement Community, Towsley Village.

Mrs. Hammerberg was born Sept. 29, 1908 in Hyndman, Penn., the daughter of Burton and Laura (Leonard) Wolford. She was a member of the Lawrence Avenue United Methodist Church in Charlotte, the Ruth Circle of Chelsea United Methodist Church, and the Chelsea Senior Citizens. She had been a registered nurse, but her main love was her family. On June 12, 1937, she married Fritchiof Hammerberg in Rockville, Md.

She is survived by three sons, Gary (Lynn Harshbarger) of Chelsea, Bruce (JoAnn) of North Carolina and Craig of Manchester; six grandchildren, Angie Spencer and Jeff, Doug, David and Kris Hammerberg; and four great-grandchildren.

She was preceded in death by her husband, Fritchiof on July 7, 1977, and one sister.

Memorial services were Aug. 12 at Chelsea Retirement Community, Towsley Village Chapel, Chelsea, with Rev. James Hilliard officiating. Interment will take place in Pennsylvania. Arrangements were made by the Cole Funeral Home, Chelsea.

Memorial contributions may be made to the Chelsea Senior Citizens.

Charles F. Hammell

Charles Francis Hammell, 82, of Potterville, died Nov. 16, 2000.

Mr. Hammell was born Dec. 3, 1917 in Lansing, the son of Charles Howard and Nellie (Hamilton) Hammell. He was a member of VFW Post 6034 of Potterville.

Surviving are sisters, Elizabeth Austin of Potterville and Charlotte Bridenbaugh of DeWitt; and several nieces and nephews.

He was preceded in death by a sister, Helen.

A graveside committal service will be held at a later date in Benton Twp. Cemetery.

Lucille Hanson

Lucille “Sue” Hanson, 73, of Auburn, Ind., died Jan. 17, 2000 at DeKalb Memorial Hospital, Auburn, Ind.

Mrs. Hanson was born June 7, 1926 in Williams Co., Ohio. She was married to Howard Hanson on July 24, 1948 and was a homemaker.

She is survived by two sons, Steven of Eau Claire, Wis., and Jeff Hanson of Auburn, Ind.; one sister, Dorothy Eagleson of Bowling Green, Ohio; seven grandchildren; and one great-grandchild.

She was preceded in death by her husband, Howard Oct. 23, 1997, two brothers, and one sister.

Services were Jan. 20 at Feller Funeral Home, Waterloo, Ind. Interment was in Milton Township Cemetery, Custar, Ohio.

Memorial contributions may be made to the Indian Village Food Bank.

Robert Hicks

Robert Hicks, 59, of Charlotte died Wednesday, Dec. 29, 1999 at Mercy Hospital, Cadillac, after a seven-year illness.

Mr. Hicks was born Sept. 9, 1940 in Allen Park, the son of Robert and Betty (Pease) Hicks. He grew up in Grand Marais and married Beatrice Kay Moon Nov. 6, 1993. He lived most of his life in the Lansing area and was a truck driver for Copco Paper (Unisource) until his retirement.

He is survived by his wife, Beatrice; one daughter, Cheryl (Dave) Wood of Belleville; one son, Robert (Sherry) Hicks of Charlotte; two stepsons, Jeffery (Val) Weeks of Eaton Rapids and Chad (Cherri) Weeks of Charlotte; pme brother, Allen (Joyce) of Richland; and seven grandchildren, Brandon, Chelsea, David, Kristel, Donnie, Nick and Michael.

Memorial services and interment will be announced at a later date.

Arrangements were made by the Hall Funeral Chapel, Manton.

Howard Floyd Hisler

Howard Floyd Hisler, age 43 of Eaton Rapids, went to be with the Lord on Friday, October 13, 2000. He was born August 25, 1957 in Eaton Rapids, the son of Howard D. and Gwen (Wilbur) Hisler. Howard was an Eaton Rapids High School Graduate, class of 1975. He worked as a Maintenance Supervisor for the Michigan Packing Co. in Mason for 23 years. He was a member of the First Baptist Church in Eaton Rapids, a member of the Hamlin Township Fire Department and an Emergency Medical Technician. He was preceded in death by a brother, Steven Hisler in 1990.

Surviving are girlfriend, Julie Beurmann of Eaton Rapids; 2 children, Jacob Hisler of Charlotte and Jane Hisler of Eaton Rapids; parents, Howard D. (Dorothy) Hisler of Eaton Rapids and Gwen (Richard) Oberlin of Fredericks, TX; grandparents, Margaret Wilbur of Eaton Rapids and Leota Trainor of Palmetto, FL; brothers and sisters, Dian (Brad) Brummette, Mark (Melissa) Hisler, Wendy (James) Wickman, Jeff (Beth) Palmer, Julie Thompson, Jim (Serena) Palmer, Carrie (Jason) Roemer, Phil (Kelli) Oberlin, James (Jody) Dean, Rob Oberlin, Rick (Candi) Oberlin, Ronnie (Jennifer) Oberlin and Lisa (Michael) Clore; several nieces and nephews, aunts, uncles and cousins.

Funeral services will be Tuesday, October 17th at 1 p.m. from the First Baptist Church in Eaton Rapids with the Rev. Scott Boles officiating. Burial will follow in the Rosehill Cemetery in Eaton Rapids with honor guard and pallbearers provided by the Hamlin Township Fire Dept. Arrangements by the Skinner Funeral Home in Eaton Rapids. For those desiring, a memorial contribution may be made to the Hamlin Township Fire Department, in memory of Howard F. Hisler.

Larry D. Hocquard

Larry Darwin Hocquard, 49, of Charlotte, passed away Thursday, Oct. 26, 2000.

Mr. Hocquard was born March 19, 1951 in Lansing, the son of Raymond and Marvel (Courtright) Hocquard. He was baptized into the Catholic Church and was a Vietnam-era veteran, serving with the U.S. Army.

Surviving are son, Larry (Leslie) of N.C., and Darrin and David of Kentucky; former wife, Susan of Kentucky; twin sister, Sherry Hernandez of Lansing; brothers, Raymond (Thelma) Hocquard of Charlotte, Leon (Jan) Hocquard of Crawfordsville, Ind., and George Hocquard of Edgewater, Fla.; several nieces and nephews; father, Raymond (Lorraine) Hocquard of Edgewater, Fla.; and grandmother, Clara Hocquard of Lansing.

He was preceded in death by his mother, Marvel in 1989.

Funeral services were held Oct. 30 at Pray Funeral Home, Charlotte, with Father Bennett Constantine officiating. Interment was at Maple Hill Cemetery, Charlotte.

Memorial contributions may be made to Barry-Eaton Hospice.
