Allen J. West

Allen James “Jim” West, 56, of Potterville died Nov. 6, 2000, after a courageous three-year battle with cancer.

Mr. West was born Aug. 2, 1944 in Lansing, a son of Edward and Evelyn West. He was a truck driver and member of ST. Mary’s Catholic Church, Charlotte.

He is survived by his wife of 33 years, Cathy; two sons, Allen James and Jodi West Jr. and Eric and Jamie West; three grandchildren, Morgan, McKenzie and Tyler West; his stepfather, Edson Farnsworth; two sisters, Judy (Dick) Dahlgren and Jane West; one sister-in-law, Donna West; numerous nieces and nephews and several in-laws he dearly treasured; two uncles, Joe (Marge) O’Dell and Bob (Dolores) O’Dell; and his companion Shancy.

Mass of the Christian Burial was Nov. 9 at St. Mary’s Catholic Church with Fr. Denis Spitzley as celebrant. Interment was in the West Windsor Cemetery. Arrangements were made by the Field & Leik Funeral Home, Dimondale.

Contributions may be made to the American Cancer Society or St. Mary’s Catholic Church Building Fund.

Harold Whitaker

Harold “Bud” Whitaker, 63, of Nashville died Dec. 17, 2000.

Mr. Whitaker was born Jan. 22, 1937 in Pennsylvania, the son of Raymond and Katherine (Banks) Whitaker. He was a line worker for Fisher Body in Lansing for 44 years. He was a member of the Nashville Baptist Church.

He is survived by his wife, Nola (Belcher) of Nashville; three daughters, Crystal (Rick) Phillis of Eagle, Melinda (Tim) Gorman of Nashville and Melissa Whitaker of Muskegon; one son, Raymond of Nashville; one step-daughter, Cindy (Kevin) Burns; three step-sons, Daniel Dankenbring of Charlotte, Gerald (Melanie) Dankenbring of Lansing and Robert (Amy) Dankenbring of Vermontville; 21 grandchildren; step-grandchildren; two sisters, Rita (Don) Wellman of Charlotte and Anna (Forest) Burr of Florida; and two brothers, Larry of Hastings and James of Lansing.

Services were Dec. 21 at the Nashville Baptist Church with Rev. Lester DeGroot officiating. Interment was in the Lakeview Cemetery, Nashville. Arrangements were made by the Pray Funeral Home, Charlotte.

Memorial contributions may be made to the Nashville Baptist Church or American Heart Association.

Mary E. White

Mary Ellen White, 94, of Charlotte died July 31, 2000.

Mrs. White was born Jan. 7, 1906 in Eaton County, the daughter of William and Emma (Maxson) Mitchell. Mrs. White taught in several rural schools after graduating from Eaton County Normal and was a member of the West Benton Ladies Aid Society and Eaton County Farm Bureau.

She is survived by two daughters, Gloria (Bob) Albu of Boynton Beach, Fla., and Rose (Bruce) Brundage of Charlotte; one son, Robert White of Charlotte; nine grandchildren; 10 great-grandchildren; and one brother, Herod Maxson Mitchell.

She was preceded in death by her husband, Roy in 1984; one daughter, Betty Scott in 1975; two grandchildren, Phillip and David Scott in 1993; and one sister, Louise Bosworth in 1984.

Services were held Aug. 3 at the Pray Funeral Home, Charlotte, with Rev. Mike Arnold officiating. Interment was in the Maple Hill Cemetery, Charlotte.

Memorial contributions may be made to the Crossroads United Brethren Church.

Cora Whitinger

Cora Luella Whitinger, 68, of Lyons, died Jan. 1, 2000 at her residence.

Mrs. Whitinger was born May 28, 1931 in Sunfield, the daughter of Carl and Blanche (King) Guy.

She is survived by her husband, George; five grandchildren; six great-grandchildren; one sister, Liota (Vernon) Shattuck of Lyons; one sister-in-law, Almeda Guy of Portland; three stepdaughters, Wanda (Cecil) Cook of Potterville, Mary (Frank) Wilkinson of Florida, Joyce (Robert) Schultz of Grand Blanc; one stepson, George Whitinger of Battle Creek; 14 step-grandchildren; and several step-great-grandchildren.

She was preceded in death by one sister, Addie (Guy) Martin; one brother, Ken Guy; daughter, Cora Lee Clark; son, Michael Lynn; her parents; and two step-children, Melvin and Larry Whitinger.

Services were Jan. 4 at the Rosier Funeral Home, Mapes-Fisher Chapel, Sunfield, with the Rev. Brian Sheen of the Sunfield United Methodist Church officiating. Interment was at Sunfield Cemetery, Sunfield.

Memorial contributions may be made to the charity of one’s choice.

Dorothy M. Whitinger

Dorothy M. (Sheets) Whitinger, 87, of Charlotte, formerly of Olivet, died Dec. 11, 2000 at Maple Knoll Manor, Charlotte.

Mrs. Whitinger was born in Saginaw, the daughter of David and Ida May (Andrews) Stage and had lived most of her life in Eaton County. She had been employed by the former Wilcox Gay Corp. and Brown’s Drug Store, both of Charlotte. She had played the piano for the Untied Brethren Church many years ago.

She is survived by one daughter, Leona (John) Ransom of Stockbridge; two sons, Lloyd (Jackie) Johnson of Bluffton, Ind., and Elliott (Gloria) Johnson of Duluth, Minn.; 13 grandchildren; numerous great and great-great-grandchildren; and two sisters, Laura Reese of Corunna and Rose Potter of Dowagiac.

She was preceded in death by husbands Rex Johnson, Earl Sheets and Elwood Whitinger; one daughter, Dorothy John; one son, James Johnson; and one brother, David Stage.

Services were Dec. 14 at the Burkhead-Green Funeral Chapel, Charlotte, with Rev. George Fleming officiating. Interment was in the Bosworth Cemetery, Olivet.

Memorial contributions may be made to the Kiwanis Manor, Charlotte, for their Activities Fund.

Joyce Louise Whittum

Joyce Louise Whittum, age 72, of Eaton Rapids, surrounded by family, died peacefully at home on Thursday, July 6, 2000 after a brief but courageous battle with cancer. All who came in contact with Joyce were profoundly touched by her love, her kindness and her light. She was born Sept. 3, 1927 in Hastings, Michigan, the daughter of Arthur S. and Leona B. (Dingham) Freese. Joyce retired in 1982 from the Felpausch Food Store in Eaton Rapids as a cashier/bookkeeper, with 26 years of service. She was preceded in death by her husband, Clair in 1992.

Surviving are her 4 children, Michael (Laureen) Whittum of Eaton Rapids, Bruce (Jean) Whittum of Lewisburg, TN, Tammy (John) Merritt of Charlotte and Cindy Whittum of Charlotte; 8 grandchildren and 3 great-grandchildren; brother, Robert (Phyllis) Freese of Hastings and many loving friends and relatives.

Funeral services were held Monday, July 10 from the Skinner Funeral Home in Eaton Rapids with the Evangelist Tom Haynie of the West Oaks Christian Church of Wixom, MI, officiating. Interment followed in the Rosehill Cemetery in Eaton Rapids. Pallbearers were Leonard Gregory, Clifford Bustance, Scott Whittum, Mike Whittum Jr., Chad Whittum and Howard Day.

For those desiring a memorial contribution may be made out to Ingham Visiting Nurse Services in care of Ingham Regional Home Care Services at 825 E. Michigan Ave., Lansing, MI 48912 in memory of Joyce L. Whittum.

Agnes Helen Williams

Agnes Helen Williams, age 68 of Lansing, died Friday, September 15, 2000 at the Hospice House of Mid-Michigan at the St. Lawrence Campus. She was born February 1, 1932 in Eaton Rapids, the daughter of Arthur Ward and Margaret Henrietta (Marquardt) Philo. Mrs. Williams was a retired employee of General Motors in Lansing. A member of the Moose Lodge #288 in Lansing, the Eagles and American Legion Auxiliary Post #238 both in Holt. Preceded her in death were her parents, 4 brothers, and 2 sisters.

Surviving are 3 children, John (Marsha) Ludtke of Eaton Rapids, Marsha Conlin of Florida, and Margaret Parlor of Lansing; 5 grandchildren and 1 great-grandchild; 4 sisters, Mary Kikendall of Eaton Rapids, Delberta Grimm, Maxine Wooden and Verna Byron all of Lansing; several nieces and nephews.

Memorial services were held on Tuesday, September 19th at 1 p.m. from the Skinner Funeral Home in Eaton Rapids with the Rev. Francis Dunn-Simon of Faith Tabernacle Church in Lansing officiating. Burial followed in the Glendale Cemetery in Okemos.

Allen Williams

Allen H. Williams, 75, of Charlotte, died Monday, Oct. 2, 2000 at Hayes Green Beach Hospital in Charlotte.

Mr. Williams was born May 20, 1925 in Marshall, and had been a Charlotte resident since 1967, coming from Eaton Rapids. He was a 1944 graduate of Olivet High School and was a retired U.S. Army infantry first sergeant, retiring in 1967 after 21 years of service. He was a life member of Maple City Post #2406 VFW in Charlotte, and was a member of Masonic Lodge #233 F&AM in Camby, Ore.

Surviving are his wife, Mary (Conrad) Williams; two daughters, Mary (James) Hayward of Vancouver, Wash. and Suzanne (Harry) Roberts of Palmer, Alaska; six grandchildren; his twin sister, Alice (Chester) Butler of Olivet; and several nieces and nephews.

He was preceded in death by a daughter, Patricia Rodriquez in 1995.

Cremation has taken place. Memorial military graveside services were held Oct. 6 at Maple Hill Cemetery, Charlotte, with Chaplains George How and Fred West and the VFW Honor Guard officiating.

Memorial contributions may be made to VFW Post #2406 Cancer Program.

Paul Williams

Paul E. Williams, 71, of Nashville died Jan. 20, 2000 at his home.

Mr. Williams was born Jan. 24, 1928 in Selma, Ind., the son of Joseph and Pearl (Bright) Williams. He was a Navy Seaman, serving after World War II. He married Dorothy Frank in Coloma June 16, 1951. He retired in 1983 after 22 years of service with Owens-Illinois Glass Co., Charlotte. Other employment included the Watervliet Paper Mill, Whirlpool Corporation in St. Joseph, and Ball Brothers Glass Factory, Joliet, Ill. He enjoyed fishing, building, watching TV, tinkering, and his grandchildren.

He is survived by his wife, Dorothy; two daughters, Lois (Keith) Bosworth of Nashville and Judith Williams of Potterville; two sons, George (Michelle) of Hastings and Paul R. (Pamela) of Lakeland, Fla.; 10 grandchildren; one great-granddaughter; and one brother, Jerry of Minnesota.

He was preceded in death by two sisters, Veda and Maxine; and three brothers, Howard, George and Joe.

Services were Jan. 24 at the Maple Valley Chapel, Nashville, with the Rev. Tom Peters officiating. Interment was in the Wilcox Cemetery, Nashville.

Memorial contributions may be made to the Hearing Impaired Association.

Richard Williams

Richard Wayne Williams, 64, of Baldwin, formerly of Eaton County, died Jan. 20, 2000 at his home.

Mr. Williams was born Jan. 25, 1935 in Charlotte, the son of Dale Kint and Ruth Mary (Patterson) Williams. He married Cheryl Ann Dowell in 1955 and was employed at Munger’s Hardware in Charlotte for several years before beginning his employment at Charlotte Public Schools, retiring in 1990 after 16 years of service. He spent the majority of his time as a building engineer at Galewood Elementary School, Charlotte.

He is survived by his wife, Cheryl; one daughter, Kathleen (Mike) Kelly of Grand Rapids; two sons, Rock (Cathy) Aaron of Murfreesboro, Tenn., and James Williams of Olivet; two grandchildren; his mother, Ruth Mary Williams of Charlotte; one sister, Mary Janice Morey of Bellevue; and one brother, Kent Williams of Charlotte.

Cremation has taken place.

Interment of the cremains was in the Deepdale Cemetery, Lansing.

Arrangements were made by the Vida Funeral Home, Baldwin.

Beulah B. Wilson

Beulah (Bell) Wilson, 88, of Charlotte died Nov. 5, 2000 at Sparrow Hospital, Lasing.

Mrs. Wilson was born Aug. 3, 1912 in Kalamo Township, Eaton County, the daughter of Bert and Myra (Shellenbarger) Bell and had been a lifelong Eaton County resident. She had been a homemaker most of her life, but had been employed in later years by the Green Thumb Corp. at the historic Eaton County Courthouse in downtown Charlotte. She was a graduate of Charlotte High School, a member of the Lawrence Avenue United Methodist Church and had been a member of the Charlotte Kitchen Band.

She is survived by one daughter, Myrna Sullivan of Charlotte; one granddaughter, Heather Sullivan of Charlotte; one grandson, Andrew Sullivan of Charlotte; one sister, Dorothy Tirrell of Charlotte; and several nephews, grand nieces and nephews.

Services were Nov. 9 at the Burkhead-Green Funeral Chapel, Charlotte, with the Rev. George Fleming officiating. Interment was in the Maple Hill Cemetery, Charlotte.

Memorial contributions may be made to the LAUMC.

Paula K. Wilson

Paula K. Wilson of Eaton Rapids (formerly of Holt) passed away of April 22, 2000 at the age of 31. She was born on June 26, 1968 in Mason and graduated from Holt High School in 1986. Paula served 8 years in the Army Reserves and was currently employed at Michigan Automotive Compressors, Inc. in Parma. Paula enjoyed fixing computers and cars and going to drive-in movies. But she got her greatest joy by helping other people.

Surviving are her special friend Sheila Slentz of Eaton Rapids; parents Allan D. (Poppa) and Celia A. Wilson of Holt; grandfather A.H. Wilson of Delta Mills; 4 brothers Allan II (Ashlee) Wilson and Clifford Wilson of Lansing, Tyrone Wilson of Holt, and Andrew (Kelly) Wilson of East Lansing; best friend Dan Evans of Lansing; 6 nephews, 1 niece, several aunts, uncles, cousins, and many friends.

Funeral services were held April 26th at the Skinner Funeral Home in Eaton Rapids with Rev. Jack Fugate officiating. Those desiring may make contributions to any mental health facility or Toys for Tots in memory of Paula K. Wilson.
