Bertha McCallum
Bertha McCallum, 100, of Charlotte died July 28, 2000.
Mrs. McCallum was born May 6, 1900 in Calhoun County, the daughter of James and Eva (Corey) Butler.
She is survived by one daughter, Maxine (Pete) Callahan of Charlotte; 12 grandchildren; 32 great-grandchildren; 52 great-great-grandchildren; and, several nieces and nephews.
She was preceded in death by her husband, Montie in 1975; two sons, Max in 1972 and Stuart in 1983; and one daughter, Fern McCallum in 1980.
Services were held July 31 at the Pray Funeral Home, Charlotte, with Charles Jenson officiating. Interment was at Hunt Cemetery, North Clarence Township.
Joe Ray McClellan
Joe Ray McClellan, 58, of Charlotte, died Aug. 2, 2000.
Mr. McClellan was born Sept. 11, 1941 in Eureka Springs, Ark., the son of Bart and Beulah (Hopper) McClellan. He was a member of the Eagles, and worked as a lineman for GTE Telephone for 30 years. He was a veteran of the U.S. Army. He is survived by one daughter, Joanne (Mike) Dedman of Houston, Texas; one granddaughter, Dallas; one grandson, Kevin; two stepdaughters, Rachelle Maurer of Charlotte and Olga Pung of Caro; two stepgrandchildren, Nathan and Andrea; and one brother, Jerry (Barbara) McClellan of Calif. He was preceded in death by his wife, Leah, and a grandson, Hunter. Family Affirmation Service was held Aug. 5 at Pray Funeral Home, Charlotte. Arrangements were made by the Pray Funeral Home, Charlotte. Memorial contributions may be made to Eaton Shelter or the American Cancer Society.
Helen Eva McConnell
Helen Eva McConnell of Onondaga, Michigan, passed away September 6, 2000 at the age of 86. Born February 20, 1914 in Dansville, Michigan, she was the daughter of John and Anna (Smegal) Thomas. Helen enjoyed the out-of-doors, fishing, gardening, bowling, basketball, playing euchre, and dancing. She graduated valedictorian of her high school class in 1932 at Dansville. Helen was married to Everett D. Baker, August 29, 1936. He died in 1964. On March 29, 1969, she married Leland L. McConnell of Eaton Rapids. He died in 1996. She was preceded in death by two sisters, Anna Yerke and Johanna; and two infant brothers.
Helen is survived by two sisters, Louise (Raymond) Reynolds of Perry and Elizabeth Potter of Pleasant Lake; several nieces, nephews, and cousins; two sister-in-laws, Opal Claflin of Lansing and Bethel Esch of Eaton Rapids; four step-children, Gary McConnell of Lansing, Douglas McConnell, Vickie (Robert) Magiera, and Verna (Walter) Smith all of Onondaga; five step-grandchildren, Gerald Magiera, Jr., Anthony (Theresa) Magiera, Tammie (Thomas) Oates, and Teresa (Marc) Heisler; and six step-great-grandchildren.
Funeral services were held September 9th at Caskey-Mitchell Funeral Home of Stockbridge with Pastor Terry Talbert of Destiny Church International of Dewitt officiating. Interment was in the Stockbridge Oaklawn Cemetery. Pall Bearers wee Donald Pollock, Tom Reynolds, Gerald Magiera, Jr., Anthony Magiera, Robert Magiera, and Thomas Oates with honorary pall bearer Marc Heisler. Memorial contributions can be made to the American Heart Association or Hospice House of Mid-Michigan, St. Lawrence Campus, 1210 W. Saginaw, Lansing, Michigan 48915-1999, in memory of Helen E. McConnell.
Elfriede H. “Elfie” McCracken
Elfriede H. “Elfie” McCracken, age 75, died Wednesday, June 14, 2000, in Lansing. Elfie was born July 16, 1924 in Karlsruhe, Germany, the daughter of Leopold Eschney and Elizabeth (Moll) Vischer. She retired from Eaton Technology in 1988 after 20 years of service. Elfie was preceded in death by her husband, Kenneth R. McCracken in 1983.
Surviving are her daughter, Heidi (Dave) Coe of Illinois; 3 sons, Jim (and his girlfriend Cathy Dean) McCracken of Olivet, Charles (Joann) O’Kraski, Leo (Sue) O’Kraski both of Illinois; 7 grandchildren, Megan, Ryan, Halley and Dylan O’Kraski and Jamie Coe and Miranda McCracken.
Funeral services were held on Saturday, June 17, 2000, at the Shelly-Odell Funeral Home, Eaton Rapids with Rev. Stephen Klink, Pastor of the Eaton Rapids Community Christian Church officiating. Interment will be at Fort Custer National Cemetery in Augusta.
Julie McEwan
Julie Katherine McEwan, 42, of Charlotte died Feb. 19, 2000.
Ms. McEwan was born May 5, 1957, in Hastings, the daughter of Digory and Jean (Thomas) McEwan. She was in the top 10 of her high school graduating class, attended Lake Superior State College on an athletic scholarship and was awarded a Calhoun County Medical Society Scholarship. She was a registered nurse and had worked at Leila Hospital in Battle Creek and Hayes Green Beach Hospital in Charlotte.
She is survived by one sister, Kathleen (Raymond) Schook of Marshall; two brothers, Patrick (Vicki) McEwan of Charlotte and Timothy (Laurie) McEwan of Richland; and nephews, Derek and Kevin Schook.
She was preceded in death by her father, Digory in 1971 and her mother, Jean in 1999.
Cremation is planned.
Services were Feb. 23, 2000 at St. Mary’s Catholic Church, Charlotte, with Fr. Thomas Nenneau officiating. Arrangements were made by the Pray Funeral Home, Charlotte.
Memorial contributions may be made to the Multiple Sclerosis Society.
Zelmadene Eloise McHaney
Zelmadene Eloise McHaney, age 69 of Narrow Lake, died Wednesday, May 3, 2000 at a Lansing hospital. She was born August 9, 1930 in Springport, the oldest of 10 children born to Howard and Twila (Greenslade) Place. Zelmadene was an Eaton Rapids High School graduate, class of 1949, and was a member of the Order of the Eastern Star, Brookfield Lodge #352. She was preceded in death by a granddaughter, Sara McHaney; brother, Harold Place, and father, Howard.
Surviving are her husband of 48 years, Sam; 4 children, Michael McHaney of Leslie, Deborah (Brad) Bessent of Jacksonville, FL, David Randell (Tammy) McHaney of Mesa, AZ, and Thomas (Mary Lou) McHaney of Narrow Lake; 13 grandchildren and 5 great-grandchildren; Mother, Twila Place of Dimondale; 2 sisters, Norma Jean (Chuck) Cribley of Eaton Rapids and Sheila (Richard) Heisler of Charlotte; 6 brothers, Robert (Darlene) Place of Lake View, Phillip (Laurie) Place of Marshall, Merlyn (Sandy) Place of Olivet, Ronald (Laura) Place of Battle Creek, Daryl (Shirley) Place of Olivet and Kevin (Judy) Place of Olivet; sister-in-law Dora Place of Eaton Rapids; several nieces and nephews.
Funeral services were held Monday, May 8th, from the Skinner Funeral Home in Eaton Rapids with Rev. Tom Evans of the First United Methodist Church officiating. Burial followed at the Perry Cemetery in Brookfield Township in Eaton County. Casket bearers were brothers, Robert, Phillip, Merlyn, Ronald, Daryl and Kevin Place. A Memorial Service was conducted Sunday, May 7th, by the Brookfield Lodge. For those desiring, a memorial contribution may be made to either the American Diabetes Association or the Order of the Eastern Star, Brookfield Lodge #352, in memory of Zelmadene E. McHaney.
Ricky J. McKellen
Ricky John McKellen, 35, of Bellevue died Sept. 23, 2000.
Mr. McKellen was born July 18, 1965 in Muskegon, the son of Ken and Joyce (Bissell) McKellen. He was active in Cub Scouts, earning the rank of Wolf, and later was involved in the Boy Scouts of America during his school years. He was a 1983 graduate of Charlotte High School and served his country in the United States Marine Corps Reserve. He was most recently employed at Magnesium Products, Eaton Rapids, and was a Harley-Davidson enthusiast, as well as a member of the Moose Lodge in Albion.
He is survived by his wife, Kim; two sons, Ricky Raven and Jayce Aaron; two stepsons, Lance Jones and Skyler Jones; his parents; and one sister, Leigh Ann (Wayne) Curtis of Nashville.
Services were held Sept. 26 at the Pray Funeral Home, Charlotte, with Rev. Lester DeGroot officiating. Interment was in the Maple Hill Cemetery, Charlotte.
Memorial contributions may be made to an education fund for children.
Jean McLean
Jean (Davids) McLean, 86, of Sun Lakes, Ariz., formerly of Charlotte, died Dec. 17, 1999 at her home in Sun Lakes.
Mrs. McLean was born Dec. 31, 1912 in Charlotte, the first child of Mary Craig Davids, a registered nurse, and Ernest Davids, an attorney-at-law and, at one time, mayor of Charlotte. She was a 1933 graduate of Western Michigan University, taught school, traveled extensively, then married Roy McLean Aug. 26, 1939 at the First Congregational Church, Charlotte. She had two daughters, Mary Jean in 1943 and Nancy Kristine in 1949, both born in Lansing. In 1956, she and her brother, Craig Davids, helped her husband, Roy, make history in Charlotte by starting the first radio station for all of Eaton County – WCER AM and FM. She was involved in all facets of the radio station and eventually had her own popular radio show, “Woman’s Page of the Air.” In addition, she continued to substitute teach throughout her life, but her real passions were traveling the globe, investing in the stock market, being very active politically in the Eaton County Republican part, was an extraordinary community leader and last, but not least, the heart and soul of her family. She and her husband sold the radio station in 1976 after more than 20 years. They began wintering in Sun Lakes in 1984. Suffering from increasing arthritis pain, she and Roy moved permanently to Sun Lakes in 1993. In July of 1999, she went under hospice care. She was a woman ahead of her time – an extremely bright, articulate and gutsy woman, a driving force in her community and family. Whether as a teacher, friend, wife, mother or co-worker, she believed in being the best she could and encouraged others, with love and sensitivity to be the same.
She is survived by her husband, Roy of Sun Lakes; two daughters, Mary Jean Renner of Costa Mesa, Calif., and Nancy Kristine Brown of Chandler, Ariz.; one sister, Donelda of Coolidge, Ariz.; one granddaughter, Karen Renner of Los Angeles, Calif.; and step-grandchildren, Eric Brown of San Francisco, Calif., Mark Brown of Chicago, Ill., and Jacqueline Brown of Chandler, Ariz.
Cremation has taken place. Services were Dec. 27 at Sun Lakes United Church of Christ, in Sun Lakes.
Arrangements were made by the Bueler Mortuary, Chandler.
Karen McLeod
Karen Sue McLeod, 31, of Charlotte died Feb. 13, 2000.
Mrs. McLeod was born Nov. 5, 1968, the daughter of Clayton and Mary Prater. She was a dental assistant at Charlotte Family Dentistry.
She is survived by her husband, Peter; two sons, Cody and Zackary Roiter; her parents; one brother, Matt Prater of Springport; her grandfathers, Clyde Prater and Charles Grove; and her mother-in-law, Anne McLeod.
She was preceded in death by her grandmothers, Betty Grove and Clora Prater; one sister, Judy Bunker; and one brother, Patrick Prater.
Services were Feb. 17 at the Pray Funeral Home, Charlotte, with Pastor Winfred Collins officiating. Interment was in the Hunt Cemetery in Clarence Twp.
Memorial contributions may be made to the Children’s Education Fund.
Virgil McMillon
Virgil Thomas McMillon, 84, of Bellevue died April 21, 2000 at his home.
Mr. McMillon was born March 10, 1916 the son of Milton and Lavada (Lester) McMillon in Evansville, Tenn. He worked for the Oliver Corporation as an assembler for 20 years, the Coolseat Gas Company in Trenton for 15 years, and Bell Telephone Co., Novi, for ten years. He retired in 1980. He married Catherine Irene Knight Oct. 5, 1938. He enjoyed hunting, fishing, taxidermy and spending time with friends and family.
He is survived by his wife, Catherine; one daughter, Charlene Drayton of Bellevue; one son, Steven of Bellevue; seven grandchildren; nine great-grandchildren; six sisters, Alice Swafford of Dunlap, Tenn., Edith McNeil of Battle Creek, Willie Grace Angel of Pikesville, Tenn., Dorothy Morrow of Chattanooga, Tenn., Louise Combo of San Diego, Calif., and Elizabeth Smith of Soddy Daisy, Tenn.; three brothers, Carl of Vandalia, Ohio, Jim of Dayton, Tenn., and Eugene of Helena, Mont.
He was preceded in death by one daughter, Betty Schmidt; two brothers, Church and Harold McMillon; and one sister, Maude McMillon.
Services were April 25 at the First Baptist Church, Bellevue, with Pastor Steve Olmstead and Pastor Ray Talmago officiating. Interment was in the Riversdale Cemetery, Bellevue. Arrangements were made by the Shaw Funeral Home, Lehman Chapel, Bellevue.

Luella McPherson-Hudson
Luella McPherson – Hudson, age 89 of Charlotte, formerly of Traverse City, died Friday, July 14, 2000 in Lansing. Luella was born December 16, 1910 in East Lake, the daughter of Harold and Agnes (Poliskey) Edmondson. Mrs. McPherson was a schoolteacher in the Traverse City area for 30 years, retiring in 1967. She was a member of the MEA and NEA. Luella was preceded in death by her first husband, George McPherson and her second husband, Charles Hudson; 2 brothers, David and Rod Edmondson; and sister, Annabelle Pletzke.
Surviving are her son Lloyd (Marilyn) McPherson of Charlotte; 2 grandchildren, Chandra (David) Cataline of Jackson and David (Linda) McPherson of Orlando, FL; 3 great-grandchildren, Tyler and Leslie Cataline and Danny Hignite; brother, Harold (Elsie) Edmondson of Traverse City; and several nieces and nephews.
Funeral services will be held on Wednesday, July 19, 2000, 1 p.m., at the Shelly-Odell Funeral Home, Eaton Rapids. The family will receive friends Tuesday from 2-4 and 7-9 at the Funeral Home. Louis Madry
Louis Madry, 75, of Charlotte died September 24, 2000.
Mr. Madry was born June 1, 1925 in Bellevue, the son of John and Katherine (Dlugoscz) Madry. He was a veteran of World War II, serving in the U.S. Army, and a lifelong Eaton County farmer.
He is survived by his wife, Frances; one daughter, Mary Catherine (Glenn) Shook of Charlotte; two grandsons, Joseph Nelson Shook and Glenn Louis Shook; two sisters; one brother; and his mother-in-law, Mary A. Smith.
Services were Sept. 27 at St. Mary Catholic Church Charlotte. Interment was at Maple Hill Cemetery, Charlotte. Arrangements were made by the Pray Funeral Home, Charlotte.
