Virginia Maggard
Virginia Maggard, 62, of Charlotte died Jan. 27, 2000 at Hospice House of Mid-Michigan.
Mrs. Maggard was born Sept. 30, 1937 in Hazzard, Ken., the daughter of Arthur and Lona (Patrick) Myers. She is survived by one daughter, Bonnie Engel of Charlotte; four sons, Robert Engel, Dan (Nancy) Engel, Ronn Engel, all of Charlotte, and Steve Engel of Kentucky; 12 grandchildren; two great-grandchildren; and several nieces, nephews and cousins.
Services were Jan. 29 at the Barker-Leik Funeral Home, Mulliken, with the Rev. Herman Meadors officiating. Interment was in the Woodlawn Cemetery, Vermontville.
Charles Mahan
Charles M. Mahan, 56, of Nashville, formerly of Charlotte, died Tuesday, Oct. 3, 2000 at his residence after a short illness.
Mr. Mahan was born in Charlotte, the son of Frank and Helen (Smith) Mahan, and was a lifelong area resident. He served in the U.S. Marines during the Vietnam War. He was currently employed by General Motors in Lansing, and was a member of the UAW Local #1753 in Lansing. He married Janet “Peggy” Harris on Sept. 25, 1965.
Surviving are his wife, Peggy; two sons, Victor (Libby) of Chicago, Ill., and Kevin (Tricia) of Bellevue; two grandchildren, Brooke and Tyler; one brother, Patrick (Katheryn) of Florida; and one sister, Kay (John) Thorndyke of Marshall.
He was preceded in death by a son, Todd in 1983.
Funeral services were held Oct. 6 at Burkhead-Green Funeral Chapel, Charlotte, with Pastor Scott Brood officiating. Interment was at West Carmel Cemetery.

Verna M. Mahan
Verna Mae Mahan, 76, of Vermontville, died Nov. 11, 2000.
Mrs. Mahan was born Sept. 13, 1924 in Eaton County, the daughter of Max and Doris (Green) Carey. She worked for General Motors in Lansing, was a clerk at Wally Hanson’s Hardware, Charlotte, and had belonged to Local #602, Charloteers.
She is survived by two sons, Leonard (Hazel) Satterly of Charlotte and Larry (Janice) Mahan of Vermontville; six grandchildren; seven great-grandchildren; two sisters, Gloria Cranson of Vermontville and Caryl Fender of Battle Creek; and several nieces and nephews.
She was preceded in death by her husband, George in 1992; one sister, Vera Fisher; and an infant son, Dale Satterly.
Services were Nov. 15 at the Pray Funeral Home, Charlotte, with Rev. Thomas Haynie officiating. Interment was in the Hillside Cemetery, Kalamo.

Rev. Dr. Alan S. Malcolm, Sr.
Rev. Dr. Alan Malcolm passed away unexpectedly on March 3, 2000 at the Maine Medical Center in Portland, Maine. Rev. Malcolm served the First Congregational Church of Eaton Rapids as its pastor for 18 months, recently returning to his beloved Maine. He was serving as the senior pastor of the Yarmouth Church of the Nazarene at the time of his death.
He was the beloved husband of Rev. Lillian Malcolm and devoted father to five children, Alexander, Andrew, Alan Jr. (AJ), Kylan and Kaitlan of Yarmouth, Maine. Pastor to the many that he served, Alan is also survived by his father Florain, brothers Florian Jr. and Thomas all of Millinocket, Maine. Alan will be missed for his love of Southern gospel music, his cheers at Haley Field, and to all those he met and called friend. Alan’s love of sports and trains will be carried on by his children that he so dearly loved. Alan will always be known for his genuine love of God and those he touched in ministry. His life was a testimony of a Christian man and shall be a beacon to all those who remember him.

Charles James Martin, Sr.
Charles James Martin, Sr., age 88 of St. Helen, died Saturday, November 4, 2000 in West Branch. Charles was born September 12, 1912 in Cheboygan, the son of James Hamilton and Clara (Harcourt) Martin and was a direct descendent of Presidents John Adams and John Quincy Adams. He graduated from Lansing Eastern High School, Class of 1931, and lived in the Lansing, Okemos and Eaton Rapids areas until retirement when he spent many years at their cottage in St. Helen. He was employed with Diamond Reo for 20 years, owned and operated Martin Mower Service in Okemos for 15 years and retired from Eaton Stamping in 1977. Mr. Martin was an avid hunter, fisherman, loved to trap and was a member of the NRA and the Michigan Steelhead Association.
Surviving are his wife of 38 years, Theo F.; 3 daughters, Betty (Richard) King of Wellston, Sue (Don) Newland of Florida, Zoanna (Bob) Riley of Lansing; 3 sons, Charles James (Dian) Martin, Jr. of Eaton Rapids, Duff (Nancy) Martin of Leslie, Ralph (Jan) Martin of Lake George; stepson, Dale D. Jones of Lansing; 21 grandchildren; numerous great-grandchildren; 1 great-great-grandchildren and 1 nephew, Richard Erratt. He was preceded in death by his stepson, Neil Jones in 1997; grandson, Duffy Martin, Jr. in 1982; and sister, Bess Erratt in 1998.
Funeral services will be held on Wednesday, November 8, 2000, 10 a.m. at the Shelly-Odell Funeral Home, Eaton Rapids. Graveside services will follow at the Richfield Cemetery, St. Helen, at 3 p.m. The family will receive friends on Tuesday from 2-4 & 6-8 p.m. at the Funeral Home. Mary Mason
Mary Mason, 98, of Charlotte died Aug. 1, 2000.
Mrs. Mason was born in Lee Township, Calhoun County, the daughter of Scott and Almyra (Kibler) Dickinson. She was a member of the Charlotte Free Methodist Church and Gideons Auxiliary.
She is survived by one daughter, Doris (Frank) Kline of Charlotte; one son, Milford (Joanne) Mason of Clarkston; four grandchildren; and 10 great-grandchildren. She was preceded in death by her husband, Floyd Mason in 1976.
Services were Aug. 4 at the Pray Funeral Home, Charlotte, with Rev. Vincent Myers officiating. Interment was in the Hillside Cemetery, Kalamo.
Jack C. Maupin
Jack C. Maupin, age 92, of Ann Arbor, formerly of Charlotte and Eaton Rapids, died Sunday, July 26, 2000 in Ann Arbor. Jack was born February 29, 1908 in Kentucky, the son of Joel Edgar and Theo (Hall) Maupin. He retired from General Motors in 1972 after 30 years of service. Mr. Maupin was preceded in death by his first wife, Frances Louise and his second wife, Alyce.
Surviving are 2 daughters, Vicki (James) Divita of Crystal Lake, IL, and Marsha Strickland of Ann Arbor; 4 grandchildren, Jeffrey (Brenda) Squires, Todd Squires, Darren Strickland, Stephanie Phillips; 2 great-grandchildren, Chelsea Squires and Amber Phillips.
Funeral services will be held on Thursday, July 20, 2000, 3 p.m., at the Shelly-Odell Funeral Home, Eaton Rapids. The family will receive friends on Wednesday from 5-7 p.m. at the Funeral Home.
Frank Maynard
Frank Maynard, 77, of Potterville died May 1, 2000.
Mr. Maynard was born Jan. 15, 1923 in Orleans, the son of Frank and Maria (Bowling) Maynard. He was a life member of the Disabled American Veterans of Lansing, and served in the U.S. Army during World War II. He had worked on highway construction for the Michigan Department of Transportation.
He is survived by his wife, Dawn (Brooks); two daughters, Jill (Clark) Gidner of Charlotte and Linda (Tony) Cervantes of Eaton Rapids; one son, Rick of Carson City; seven grandchildren; four great-grandchildren; and one sister, Hazel (Elmer) Dingman of Clifford Lake.
He was preceded in death by one son, John Maynard in 1996.
Services were May 4 at the Pray Funeral Home, Charlotte, with Pastor Dick Thorp officiating. Interment was in the Ft. Custer National Cemetery, Augusta.

Phillip Merren
Phillip Merren, 35, of Olivet died March 25, 2000.
Mr. Merren was born Feb. 25, 1965 in Charlotte, the son of Donald and Janet (Campbell) Merren.
He is survived by his parents; his wife, Dawn Rae (Karn); three daughters, Athena Merren, Trisha Hisler and Lindsay Hisler; five sons, Charles Merren, Jerrett Merren, Joshua Merren, Adam Hisler, and Tyler Hisler; three sisters, Loretta Betts, Kimberly Rounds, Deanna Barnum; and one brother, Scott Merren.
Services and dinner were March 31 at the Sunfield United Brethren Church. Arrangements were made by the Pray Funeral Home, Inc.

Mary Messenger
Mary Margaret Swayzee Messenger, 86, of Bellevue, died April 24, 2000 in Kalamazoo.
Mrs. Messenger was born Dec. 7, 1913 in Burnett Creek, Ind., the daughter of Ray and Laura Ann (Beckner) Swayzee. She graduated from Bellevue High School and from Nichols Hospital in Battle Creek as a registered nurse. She worked at Community Hospital from 1960 to 1972. She married Lynn Messenger July 27, 1935. For several years, she was a member of the Hospital Auxiliary and a 4-H leader, a member of the Bellevue United Methodist Church and United Methodist Women, Bellevue Historical Society, Eastern Star and the 20th Century Club for 50 years. She was the Bellevue Senior Citizen of the Year in 1983.
She is survived by three daughters, Lois (Robert) Siple of Vermontville, Laura (Wayne) Mahoney of Tillsonburg, Ontario, and Joann (James) Pierce of Kalamazoo; one son, Harold (Diane) of Bellevue; 13 grandchildren; 15 great-grandchildren; one sister, Helen Kieser of Delton; and one brother, Gerald (Mildred) O’Dell of Olivet.
She was preceded in death by her husband, Lynn, in 1992.
Services were April 28 at the Bellevue United Methodist Church, with Pastors Dan Minor and Mark Thompson officiating. Internment was in the Riverside Cemetery, Bellevue. Arrangements were made by the Shaw Funeral Home, Lehman Chapel, Bellevue.

Gwendolyn Metz
Gwendolyn Hartsell Metz, 29, of Follansbee, W. Va., formerly of Henry’s Bend and Charlotte, died Sunday, April 2, 2000 of injuries resulting from an automobile accident in Follansbee.
Mrs. Metz was born March 13, 1971 in Oil City, the daughter of Donald and Sandra Aaron Hartsell, and was raised in Henry’s Bend. She was a 1989 graduated of West Forest High School, Tionesta, and had attended Clarion University of Pennsylvania. She was employed for two-and-one-half years as a secretary/ dispatcher with Sunesis Trucking, Follansbee, and was employed at Spartan Motors while living in Charlotte. She was very active in her children’s lives and activities, especially with the Brooke County, W. Va., wrestling program. Mrs. Metz was a member of Grace United Methodist Church in Oil City and the United Methodist Church in Follansbee.
She is survived by her husband, Joseph; her parents of Henry’s Bend; two children, Brandon and Megan Metz of Follansbee; three stepchildren, Ashley and Joey Metz of Follansbee and Amber Metz Cochran of Franklin; one sister, Kimberly (Steven) French of Charlotte; one brother, Donald “D.J.” Hartsell Jr. of Midland, Texas; her grandparents, William and Mabel Aaron of Henry’s Bend; and great-grandmother, Edna Baughman of Volant; her father and mother-in-law, Ted and Norma Metz of Warren, Ohio; one sister-in-law, Debbie (Don) Hall of Follansbee; two brothers-in-law, David (Connie) Metz of Warren, Ohio and James Grubb of Marysville, Ohio; and numerous uncles, aunts, nieces, nephews, and cousins.
She was preceded in death by her grandparents, Dow and Libbie Hartsell.
Services were April 7 at the Grace United Methodist Church with the Rev. Jack Friggle officiating. Interment was in the Brandon Cemetery, Cranberry. Arrangements by Osenider Funeral Home, Oil City, Penn.
