Lyle W. Place
Lyle William Place, 74, of Charlotte, died Sept. 3, 2000.
Mr. Place was born Nov. 1, 1925 in Dowagiac, the son of Fred and Myra (Enos) Place. He was an owner/operator for Charlotte Glass, Inc., and retired in 1990. He was also a World War II veteran of the U.S. Navy, and affiliated with the VFW and New Hope Baptist Church, Ellington, Fla.
He is survived by his wife, A. Marie (Gasper) of Charlotte; three daughters, Linda Place of Ann Arbor, Marcia Feldpausch of Charlotte, and Rita (Don) Clough of Olivet; one son, Lyle of Charlotte; one sister, Virginia Hal of California; one brother, George of Morenci; six grandchildren; and one great-grandchild.
He was preceded in death by his parents, Fred and Myra Place; one sister, Helen Parrish of Kalamazoo; and two brothers, Enos of Florida and Fred of Linton, Ind.
Services were held Sept. 6 at the Pray Funeral Home, Charlotte, with Rev. Lester DeGroot officiating. Interment was in the Maple Hill Cemetery, Charlotte.
Memorial contributions may be made to the Alzheimer’s Association. Envelopes are available at the funeral home.
Martha Planck
Martha Planck, 77, of Charlotte, formerly of Nashville, died June 3, 2000 at Hospice Home in Lansing.
Mrs. Planck was born Nov. 29, 1922 in Strongs, the daughter of Frederick and Maggie (Hunter) Histed. She married Wallace Planck Jan. 4, 1945 in Nashville. She was a furniture finisher for the Furniture Factory in Hastings and after her husband died, was a social service volunteer in Charlotte and a Helping Hands volunteer, also in Charlotte. She was a member of the American Legion Auxiliary in Charlotte and Nashville VFW Auxiliary. She attended the Nashville United Methodist Church. She loved to crochet and was an avid bingo player.
She is survived by two daughters, Jean (George) Gonser of Charlotte and Linda (Raymond) Hayes of Freeport; one son, Walter of Nashville; several step-children; special grandchildren, Dr. Rusty Gonser and his wife, Dr. Elaina Tuttle of Maryland, Shane and Kathy Gonser, and their daughter, Shelby of Charlotte, Jeana Gonser of Charlotte, Denia Hull of Freeport, and several other grandchildren and great-grandchildren; one sister, Betty Bedell of Canada; two brothers, Raymond and Frank Histed of Nashville; many nieces and nephews; and special friend, Carla Hale of Charlotte.
She was preceded in death by her husband, Wallace Nov. 22, 1988; her parents; and 18 brothers and sisters.
There was a memorial celebration June 10 at the Maple Valley Chapel, Nashville. Internment was in the Lakeview Cemetery, Nashville.

Pearl M. Poehler
Pearl M. Poehler, age 91, a long time resident of Eaton Rapids, died Saturday, July 15, 2000 in Kalamazoo. Pearl was a born May1, 1909 in Lakeview, moving to Eaton Rapids in 1911 and growing up “in the Brickyard”. She graduated from Eaton Rapids High School in 1926, and then the Acme Business College in Lansing, after which she pursued a career in business. She retired in 1974 after many years working for the State of Michigan, Treasury Dept., in Lansing. Pearl was active in the Senior Citizens Center, and a member of their “Mad Hatters Kitchen Band”. A true competitor, she loved to play bingo, euchre, and any other card game. She was an avid sports fan. She had been a member of the First United Methodist Church and The Order of the Eastern Star. Pearl was preceded in death by her husband, Harold “Dutch” Poehler; her parents, Harry and Rose (Haven) Scott; and three siblings, Baby William Scott, Iris Reuter and Leola Finch.
Surviving are her 3 children, Marlene (Jack) Koch of Parchment, Patricia (Mel) Nelson of Naples, FL, Gary (Pat) Dodge of Orange City, FL; her brother, Cyril (Judy) Scott of Toledo, OH; 9 grandchildren; 22 great-grandchildren; and 9 nieces and nephews.
Funeral services will be held on Thursday, July 20, 2000, 11 a.m., at the Shelly-Odell Funeral Home, Eaton Rapids, with Pastor Tom Evans of the First United Methodist Church officiating. The family will receive friends on Wednesday from 7 to 9 p.m. at the Funeral Home. In lieu of flowers, expressions of sympathy may be made to the Eaton Rapids Senior Center in memory of Pearl Poehler.
Donna Rae Pope
Donna Rae Pope, age 55, of St. Johns, went to her Lord February 19, 2000 after a long and courageous battle with Lymphoma at Ingham Medical Center. She was born June 29, 1944 to Donald & Marie (Eisler) Alvord. She attended Elsie High in 1962. For the past 14 years she was employed by Squires Equipment, Eaton Rapids, in the School Bus Division. She was preceded in death by daughter Mary Ann Pope and mother Marie Alvord.
Donna is survived by her husband Raymond G. Pope, Jr. whom she married October 3, 1964 in St. Johns; daughter, Theresa (Phillip) Benson of Augusta N.J.; son, David (Heather) Pope of DeWitt; 3 of her greatest loves, grandchildren Logan Phillip Benson, Blake Isabelle Benson and Jacob David Pope; father, Donald Alvord of Houghton Lake; brother, Gary (Rita) Alvord of Ovid, sister, Monica Stechschulte of Dayton, Ohio; father-in-law & mother-in-law, who loved her like their own, Raymond C. & Irene Pope of St. Johns.
Funeral services will be held on Tuesday, February 22, 2000, 10:30 a.m., at St. Joseph Catholic Church with Rev. Fr. Kenneth McDonald and Deacon Robert McPhilamy officiating. Burial will follow at Mt. Rest Cemetery, A Rosary service was prayed Monday evening at the Osgood Funeral Home, St. Johns.
The family would like to take this time to thank the entire staff of five-north at Ingham Medical. To Ray, John, Judy, Bev, Petra, Jill, Marianne and to everyone who we left out and to Dr. Layhe and Dr. Pat. You people are supreme care givers and we wish you all a big Thank You for all the love, care and devotion you gave to Donna. You made her final days as tolerable as possible. She loved you all. Grandma: We will always love you. You are now our Special Angel in Heaven. Logie Bear, Blakie Belle and Jakey.
Milford E. Reeder
Milford E. Reeder, 83, of Olivet died Sept. 17, 2000 at the Tendercare of Marshall after an extended illness.
Mr. Reeder was born in Lansing, the son of Earl and Mae (Munshaw) Reeder and had been an Olivet Postmaster and had been a department head at the Federal Center, Battle Creek, with a total of 32 years of federal service. He was a graduate of Evanston, Ill., High School and a 1941 graduated of Olivet College. He was a U.S. Navy veteran, having served during World War II. He was a member of the Olivet Congregational Church, where he had served on the board of deacons, board of trustees and on two committees for selecting new ministers. He was a former member and Past President of the Olivet Lions Club and member of the American Legion and Olivet Lodge #267 F&AM.
He is survived by his wife of 51 years, Virginia (Jones).
He was preceded in death by his parents, one daughter, Kathryn Reeder, and one brother, Milton.
Cremation has taken place. There was no visitation.
Military graveside services and interment were Sept. 22 at the Fort Custer National Cemetery, Augusta, with Rev. Roy Backus and the Fort Custer Honor Guard officiating. Arrangements were made by the Burkhead-Green Funeral Home, Charlotte.
Memorial contributions may be made to Olivet College, the Olivet Congregational Church, the Alzheimer’s Association or charity of one’s choice.
Dale E. Reese
Dale E. Reese, age 78 of Eaton Rapids, died Tuesday, June 20, 2000 at a Lansing hospital. He was born May 13, 1922 in McComb, Ohio, the son of Ember and Laura (Madouse) Reese. Dale and his family moved to Eaton Rapids in 1925, when he was 3 years old. He attended the Eaton Rapids High School and had graduated in 1940. Early on, Dale had worked in Eaton Rapids for Charlie and Ellen Smith at their Service Station and later for Jack Harris at Zephyr Gas Station. He retired as an Agent for the Prudential Life Insurance Company, serving the Eaton Rapids area. Dale volunteered for the Eaton Rapids Fire Department, serving 18 years, and was a former Assistant Fire Chief. Preceding him in death were 2 grandchildren, Wayne and Wendy Strank; 2 brothers, Clyde and Lloyd Reese; and a sister, Esther Shepard.
Surviving are his wife of 54 years, Lola; 2 daughters, Gail (David) Strank of Eaton Rapids and Vicki (Marvin) Ellsworth of Eaton Rapids; 8 grandchildren, Laura and Peter Strank, Debra (Nick) Tupper, Douglas (Bonnie) Ellsworth, Daniel (Karie) Ellsworth, Shad, Luke and Elizabeth Ellsworth; 10 great-grandchildren and 4 great-great-grandchildren; mother-in-law, Georgia Livingston.
Funeral services were held on Friday, June 23rd at Skinner Funeral Home in Eaton Rapids with the Rev. Dennis Perkins of the Eaton Rapids Wesleyan Church officiating. Burial followed in the Plains Cemetery in rural Eaton Rapids. Pall bearers were Eaton Rapids Firemen, Roger McNutt, Kim Freer, Troy Oliver, Brian Walker, Mark Miller, Kevin Holland and Scott Perry. For those desiring, a memorial contribution may be made to the Eaton Rapids Fire Department in memory of Dale E. Reese.
Donald Rhodabeck
Donald Rhodabeck, 84, of Charlotte died Jan. 4, 2000.
Mr. Rhodabeck was born June 22, 1915 in Emmet County, the son of Daniel and Bessie Rhodabeck.
Graveside services were Jan. 7 at the Needmore Cemetery, rural Charlotte, with Raymond Rossell officiating.
Mildred I. Richter
Mildred I. Richter, 92, of Grand Ledge, formerly of Lake Odessa, died Friday afternoon, Oct. 27, 2000, at Tendercare West in Delta Twp.
Mrs. Richter was born Sept. 9, 1908 in Gratiot County, a daughter of Byron and Madge (Hakes) Reeves. She was a retired General Motors employee, and a life member of Lake Odessa OES #315.
Surviving are two daughters, Betty (Harold) Buchholz of Grand Ledge and Barbara Jean Riggs of Grand Haven; five grandsons, and 15 great-grandchildren; two step-children, Muriel (Dan) Shinaver of Dimondale and John (Carol) Richter of Utica; nine step-grandchildren and 10 step-great-grandchildren.
Services were held Oct. 30 at Barker-Leik Funeral Home, Mulliken, with Pastor Don Woolum of the Mulliken United Methodist Church officiating. Interment was at Lakeside Cemetery, Lake Odessa.
Virginia R. (Blatt) Riley
Virginia R. (Blatt) Riley, age 67, died Monday, January 31, 2000. Virginia was born October 6, 1932 in Eaton Rapids, the daughter of Francis Harold and Helen Jane (Collins) Blatt. She was a member of the VFW and the American Legion Club 47 in Comstock Park and retired from the Grand Rapids Veterans Facility. Virginia graduated from the Eaton Rapids High School, Class of 1951. She was preceded in death by her husband, Ralph Riley and sister, Clara Finney.
Surviving are her 2 sons, Perry (Susan) McDonald of Holt, Sidney (Roxanne) McDonald of Lansing; 3 grandchildren, Sarah and Jessica McDonald and Lindsey; 3 brothers, Paul (Bonnie) Blatt of Lansing, Robert (Wilma) Blatt of Florida, John (Carolyn) Blatt of Muskegon and several nieces and nephews.
Memorial services were held on Saturday, February 5, 2000 at the Shelly-Odell Funeral Home, Eaton Rapids. Interment of cremains followed at Rosehill Cemetery, Eaton Rapids.
Paul Roberts
Paul Edward Roberts, 90, of Sarasota, Fla., formerly of Charlotte, died Thursday, Feb. 24, 2000 at his home.
Mr. Roberts was born Nov. 22, 1909 in Hamler, Ohio. He studied mechanical engineering at Fenn College, and was credited as a co-inventor of the aluminum anodizing process while employed at ALCOA. In 1950, he and his wife, Virgie, moved to Charlotte, where they resided at Stone Manor, at the corner of Henry Street and Cochran Ave., for 29 years.
Mr. Roberts was the founder and chief engineer of Maeward Couplings, Inc. in Olivet from 1954-1970. He was a private aircraft pilot, a nautical captain, and in 1979, retired to Florida where he became a tournament shuffleboard champion.
Surviving are his wife, Virgie; daughters, Phyllis Sherick of Katy, Texas, and Janet Holmes of Vancouver, Wash.; son, Paul Roberts of Tipp City, Ohio; stepdaughter, Maryellen Dudley of Sarasota, Fla.; sister, Zuma Johns of Ohio; and, 18 grandchildren.
Funeral services were held March 4 at Pray Funeral Home, Charlotte, with Rev. Arthur Salisbury officiating. Interment was at Maple Hill Cemetery, Charlotte.

Betty (Williams) Robins
Betty J. (Williams) Robins, 63, of Lansing died May 17, 2000 at her residence after an extended illness.
Mrs. Robins was born in Wardell, Mo., the daughter of Benjamin and Vivian (Young) Williams and had been a Lansing resident for 45 years, coming from Missouri. She had been employed for 28 years at the Ingham Regional Medical Center, Pennsylvania Campus, Lansing.
She is survived by four daughters, Joan Buck of Lansing, Debbie Bobillo of Dimondale, Donna Holey of Carson City, and Cynthia Robins of Lansing; two sons, Gregory of Lansing and Kenneth of Harrison; 16 grandchildren; nine great-grandchildren; three sisters; and three brothers.
Services were May 20 at the Burkhead-Green Funeral Chapel, Charlotte, with Pastor Daryl Franzel officiating. Interment was in the Millerburg Cemetery, Charlotte.
Memorial contributions may be made to the Ingham Medical Hospice or American Cancer Society.
