Ruth Royston
Ruth Elizabeth Royston, 73, of Moorestown, passed away Tuesday, Feb. 8, 2000 at her home.
Mrs. Royston was born in Paragould, Ark., the youngest of seven children. Having been a beautician in her Lansing home for over 35 years, and an instructor at Melba Beauty College, she retired to the Lake City area. She was an active member of the Moorestown United Methodist Church. She organized mother/daughter banquets and was very proud of her involvement in the development of the food pantry at the church. She also worked on hunters’ dinners, funeral dinners, crafts, Bible school and children’s sermons. She was a friend to many in the community and often visited the sick, taking in meals and sharing her time. An excellent cook and entertainer, her favorite activity was to share her home and a meal with friends.
She is survived by her husband of 26 years, Gaylord; three daughters, Linda (Clyde) Grant of Williamston, Sharon (Dick) Stinger and Donna Maxwell, both of Lansing; 11 grandchildren and several great-grandchildren; several nieces and nephews; one sister, Mary Lou Kamiensky of Lake City; two sisters-in-law, Lurlene Etherton of Kentucky and Gerri Etherton of Milan.
Services were Feb. 11 at the Moorsetown-Stittsville United Methodist Church with Pastor Jay Kendall officiating. Interment was at Deepdale Memorial Park, Lansing.
Arrangements were made by the Young Funeral Home, Lake City.
Donald Rugg
Donald Henry Rugg, 57, of Bellevue died Jan. 2, 2000 at Battle Creek Health System.
Mr. Rugg was born in Battle Creek Oct. 22, 1942, the son of Cyrus and Pauline (Hodges) Rugg. He graduated from Pennfield High School and worked for 37 years for Cello Foil as a laminator. He was an avid hunter and outdoorsman and member of the Battle Creek Sportsmen’s Club.
He is survived by his fiancée, Linda Barrett of Bellevue; one daughter, Donnette Rugg of Puerto Rico; one son, James of Bellevue; 11 grandchildren; three sisters, Pat DeMott of Bitely, Jean Criffield of Bellevue and Sandra Palmer of Delton; three brothers, Fred and Gary, both of Bellevue, and Harold of Battle Creek; and many nieces and nephews.
He was preceded in death by his parents.
Memorial services were Jan. 5 at Bellevue Christian Center with his nephew, David Rugg, officiating. Arrangements were made by the Shaw Funeral Home, Lehman Chapel, Bellevue.

Lyllian St. Clair
Lyllian Karoline St. Clair, 96, of Vermontville died July 16, 2000.
Mrs. St. Clair was born March 31, 1904 in Lansing. She and her husband, Art, owned and operated a bait shop and shoe repair store at Houghton Lake. She retired from Michigan State University Cafeteria Services.
She is survived by four grandchildren, Sandra (Kenneth) Furlong of Vermontville, Pamela (Ronald) Heredeen of Grand Rapids, Minn., Arthur (Bonnie) Koehler Jr. of Dorr and Tamara Rowland of Henrietta; 16 great-grandchildren; 26 great-great-grandchildren; one great-great-great-granddaughter; and one stepdaughter, Betty (Carlos) Carrillo of Toledo, Ohio.
She was preceded in death by her first husband, Arthur Koehler, in 1960; her second husband, George St. Clair in 1966; one son, Arthur Koehler Sr. in 1995; one brother; three sisters; one great-grandson, Randy; and special friend, Devere Wheeler.
Services were July 20 at Gorsline-Runciman Lansing Chapel with Rev. Kenneth Vaught officiating. Interment was in the Chapel Hill Memorial Gardens, Lansing.
John N. Saites
John Nicholas Saites, 58, beloved father and husband, of Potterville, died Dec. 26, 2000.
Mr. Saites was born Oct. 15, 1942 in Lansing, the son of Nicholas and Margaret (Davey) Saites. He was owner of Saites Brothers Caterers, Potterville. He was a member of both the Charlotte and Potterville Chambers of Commerce and the Potterville United Methodist Church.
He is survived by his wife, Nancy (Field); three daughters, Christie (Robert) VanderVliet of Oakridge, N.J., Carrie (Kurt) Stefan of Florida, and Holly Saites of Potterville; one son, Christopher of Potterville; one granddaughter, Ashley VanderVliet; one sister, Jackie Kahl of Canadian Lakes; three brothers, William of Lansing, Nicholas (Penny) of Grand Ledge and Louis Nicholas of Lakeland, FL; and one brother-in-law, Roger Saylor of Potterville.
He was preceded in death by his parents; and one sister, Lynda Saylor.
Services were Dec. 29 at the Potterville UMC with Rev. Paul Bailey officiating. Interment was in the Benton Township Cemetery, Potterville.
Leon H. Sampson
Leon Hedrick Sampson, 84, of Winona Lake, Ind., formerly of Charlotte, died July 31, 2000.
Mr. Sampson was born Oct. 22, 1915 in Fort Recovery, Ohio, the son of Amos and Myrtle (Hedrick) Sampson. He was a licensed pilot, member of the Camache Society and past president of Michigan Nut Growers – his expertise was in the scientific development of products and electrical engineering. He had made optical products that have been used in the U.S. Space Program.
He is survived by his wife, Helen (Galusha) Sampson; two daughters, Lucene (Richard) Harstine of Roanoke, Va., Ellen (George) Harton of Glendale, Md.; 12 grandchildren; four great-grandchildren; one sister, Thelsa (Robert) Turner of Charlotte; and a sister-in-law, Mary Sampson of Lansing.
He was preceded in death by a brother, Benson Sampson in 1999.
Services were Aug. 2 at the Pray Funeral Home, Charlotte, with Dr. George Harton officiating. Interment was in the Maple Hill Cemetery, Charlotte.

B. Bessie Satterlee
B. Bessie Satterlee, 93, of Elkhart, Ind., formerly of Charlotte, died May 5, 2000.
Mrs. Satterlee was born July 16, 1906 in Charlotte, the daughter of Bert and Cora (Mikesell) Cooper.
She was a charter member of the Chester Gospel Church and the Just-A-Mere Club.
She is survived by three daughters, Charlene (Donald) Jetter of Elkhart, Ind., Norma (Wayne) Clute of Jackson, and Nancy (Phil) Herzel of Woodland; 22 grandchildren, 25 great-grandchildren; two great-great-grandchildren; and one daughter-in-law, Georgia Satterlee of Holland.
She was preceded in death by her husband, Rex in 1977; one daughter, Coreen Shoup in 1969; and one son, Eugene in 1989.
Services were May 9 at the Pray Funeral Home, Charlotte, with the Rev. Lester DeGroot officiating. Interment was in the Gresham Cemetery, Chester Township, Eaton County.

Ella Marie Satterly
Ella Marie Satterly, 73, of Algonac, formerly of Charlotte, died April 21, 2000.
Mrs. Satterly was born Sept. 29, 1926 in Eaton County, the daughter of Joseph and Jessie (Claflin) Norris. She was a member of St. Paul’s Episcopal Church, Harsen Island and past president and secretary of its Ladies Circle, a den mother, Lioness, and enjoyed baking and cooking for church activities.
She is survived by four sons, Norris (Hazel) Satterly of Iron Mountain, Byron (Pam) Satterly of Sterling Heights, Christopher (Linda) Satterly of Algonac, and Leonard (Hazel) Satterly of Charlotte; ten grandchildren; 11 great-grandchildren; two sisters, Betty Meeb of Clarksville and Mable Wakley of Sunfield; and two brothers, Wilford “Bill” Norris of Charlotte and Dale Norris of Lansing.
She was preceded in death by her husband, David in 1999.
Services were held April 22 at the Pray Funeral Home, Charlotte, with the Rev. Mark Ralph officiating. Interment was in the Gresham Cemetery, Charlotte.

Lynda Saylor
Lynda Zoie Saylor, 53, of Potterville died May 20, 2000 at her residence.
Mrs. Saylor was born in Lansing, the daughter of Nickolas and Margaret (Davey) Saites. She was a payroll supervisor for the Potterville Public Schools for 20 years.
She is survived by her husband, Roger; one daughter, Lisa Mae (Tony) Feighner of Mason; one son, James Scott (Vi) of Battle Creek; three grandchildren, Zoie Feighner, Tyler Saylor and Dominic Saylor; one sisters, Jackie (Saites) Kahl of Canadian Lakes; and three brothers, William (Sharon) Saites of Lansing, John (Nancy) Saites of Potterville and Nickolas (Penny) Saites of Grand Ledge; and sister, Jackie (Saites) Kahl of Canadian Lakes.
Services were May 23 at Pray Funeral Home, Charlotte, with the Rev. Paul Bailey officiating. Interment was in the Benton Township Cemetery.

Linda Lou Scarbro
Linda L. Scarbro, age 51 of Eaton Rapids, formerly of Columbiaville, died Thursday, October 5, 2000 at her residence following a terminal illness. She was born March 11, 1949 in Lansing, the daughter of Gene and Ludema (McNatt) VanAtta. She was preceded in death by her mother, Ludema Pearson.
Surviving are her husband, Lawrence; 3 daughters, Shannon (Tim) Smith of Mayville, Sheila (Bob) Hancock of Davison, and Lisa (Pete) Bennett of Lapeer; father and step-mother, Gene and Sharon VanAtta of Fowlerville; 8 grandchildren; 12 brothers and sisters, Nancy Bradford of Colorado, Ralph Snyder of Lansing, Roger Snyder of Lansing, Alan Ott of Three Rivers, Kendall Ott of Aurelius, Douglas Ott of Lansing, Randy VanAtta of Fowlerville, Mike VanAtta of Perry, Harry VanAtta of Dansville, Rick VanAtta of Webberville, Kathy Greenhill of Shepherd and Matt VanAtta of Williamston; several nieces and nephews.
Funeral services were held Saturday, October 7, 2000 from the Skinner Funeral Home in Eaton Rapids with the Rev. Stephen Klink of the Community Christian Church officiating. Burial followed in the Oakwood Cemetery in Eaton Rapids. Pallbearers were Harley McNatt, DuWayne Ryckman, Raymond Carter, Charles Carter, Rusty Heeter and Marvin Davis. For those desiring, a memorial contribution may be made to either the A.L.S. Association, Hospice of Lansing or the Eaton Community Hospice, in memory of Linda L. Scarbro.
Linda M. Schaefer
Linda M. Schaefer, 94, of Charlotte, died Sunday, Aug. 13, 2000 at her residence after an extended illness.
Mrs. Schaefer was born Dec. 18, 1905 in Merrill, the daughter of William and Eliza (Reynolds) Moulton, and had been a Charlotte resident since 1939, coming from Lansing. She was registered nurse at Hayes Green Beach Hospital, Charlotte, from where she retired. She was a member of the Lawrence Avenue United Methodist Church, the Maple City Chapter #218 OES in Charlotte, the Charlotte Women’s Club, HGB Hospital Auxiliary, the Altruistic Club, Friendship Club and the Pythian Sisters.
Surviving are her son, Charles Schaefer II of Charlotte, and her daughter, Ann Schaefer of Grand Rapids.
She was preceded in death by her husband, Charles Schaefer on Oct. 21, 1983.
Cremation has taken place and private services were held at Oakwood Cemetery, Saginaw.
Memorial contributions may be made to Hayes Green Beach Hospital or the Lawrence Avenue United Methodist Church, both of Charlotte.
