Joanne Marie Scheffler

Joanne Marie Scheffler, age 69 of Onondaga, died Tuesday, October 24, 2000 at her residence. Joanne was born February 10, 1931 in Wyandotte, the daughter of Joseph Leo and Mary Isabel (Brashaw) Callahan. She was preceded in death by her brother, Donald.

Surviving are her husband of 47 years, Richard; 3 daughters, Nancy Joan (Jeffrey) Crose, Kathleen Anne Scheffler both of Onondaga, Suzanne Havckost of San Antonio, TX; 3 grandchildren, Carol Lynn (Gordon) Usher of Pawpaw, Jeffrey Thomas Crose of Onondaga, Gregory Ryan Havckost of San Antonio, TX; 2 brothers, Patrick (Genevieve) Callahan of Winter Haven, FL, Clifford (Barbara) Callahan of Coldwater and numerous nieces and nephews.

Mass of the Christian Burial was prayed Friday, October 27, 2000 at St. Peter Church, Eaton Rapids, with Father Bennett Constantine as Celebrant. The Rosary was prayed on Thursday. Interment will be at the Onondaga Cemetery. Arrangements were by Shelly-Odell Funeral Home, Eaton Rapids. A special thank you to Dr. Hamdan and Dr. Bolmer, the Breslin Cancer Center and the nursing staff of Ingham Regional’s 5 North. Memorial contributions may be made to either Joanne’s family or the Breslin Cancer Center.

Daniel Lee Scheib

Daniel Lee Scheib, 51, of Olivet, formerly of Charlotte, died Aug. 4, 2000 as the result of an auto accident.

Mr. Scheib was born April 30, 1949 in Charlotte, the son of Robert and Aileen (Barden) Scheib, and was a lifelong Charlotte and Olivet-area resident. He graduated from Charlotte High School in 1968 and Olivet College in 1993, where he was on the dean’s list. He was an accomplished musician, having toured for a time with the “Mighty Joe Young” blues band in Chicago. He played at the Detroit Jazz Festival on several occasions and performed with the Olivet College Jazz Ensemble. Music was Dan’s life and he openly shared his music with everyone, to everyone’s pleasure.

He is survived by his children, Jamie Scheib of Vermontville and Mandi Scheib of Wayland; sister, Suzanne (Jack) Pentecost of Mason; brothers, John and David (Valerie) Scheib, both of Lansing; and nieces and nephews, Jeanne (Mitchell) Hayes, Erik Cooley, Michael Ogelsby, Andrea Birch, Keni (Jeff) Wanbaugh and Phillip (Nicole) VandeMoortel.

Memorial services were Aug. 8 at the Burkhead-Green Funeral Chapel, Charlotte, with the Rev. John Toth officiating.

Memorial contributions may be made to the Daniel Scheib Music Scholarship Fund, Olivet College, Olivet.

William Schimmel

William Harold Schimmel, 81, of Charlotte, died Monday, June 12, 2000.

Mr. Schimmel was born May 24, 1919 in Pittsburgh, Penn., the son of Albert and Anna Schimmel. He was a certified public accountant in Pittsburgh, Penn., for Peat, Marwick, Mitchell and Co., then in East Detroit at the Schimmel and Hemeryck Accounting Firm.

Surviving are his wife of 57 years, Janet (Fay) Schimmel; daughter, Ann (Don) Sovey; grandchildren, Jennifer and Christopher Sovey of Charlotte; and, sister-in-law, Ruth Schimmel of Madison, Wis.

He was preceded in death by his brother, Albert Schimmel.

Funeral services were held June 14, at Pray Funeral Home, Charlotte, with Rev. Dr. Peter R.K. Brenner officiating.

Beatrice Scott

Beatrice Scott, 83, of Charlotte, died Jan. 29, 2000.

Mrs. Scott was born June 10, 1916 in Lansing, the daughter of Ira and Margaret (Anderson) Cooper. She was a teacher for Charlotte Public Schools, starting as a rural teacher. She had spent a year in Alaska, retiring in 1972 after 31 years of service. She attended Western Michigan University and was a member of the Delta Kappa Gamma Sorority, past worthy matron of Maple City Order of Eastern Star Chapter #218, member of the White Shrine and a past guardian of Job’s Daughters Bethel #1.

She is survived by her husband, Archie; two daughters, Joyce (Gene) Byrd and Margaret Elbrink, both of Charlotte; six grandchildren and 13 great-grandchildren.

Services were Jan. 31 at the Pray Funeral Home, Charlotte, with the Rev. Dr. Peter R.K. Brenner officiating. Interment was in the Maple Hill Cemetery, Charlotte.

Travis Seavolt

Travis Jeffrey “TJ” Seavolt, 15 months old, died in the arms of his parents Sunday, Dec. 5 at the Riley Hospital for Children, Indianapolis, Ind.

TJ was born Sept. 1, 1998 at Edward W. Sparrow Hospital, Lansing, the son of Jeffrey and Donna Marie (Dinsmore) Seavolt. In 1999, he became the EWS Hospital Children’s Miracle Network Poster Child. He was an angel of love and taught those who loved him about strength and courage. He fought and won his battle with leukemia, with the help of his sister, Savanna, who was a perfect six-out-of-six bone marrow match. But the long battle with side effects and infections was too much for TJ’s small body and although he weakened physically, he continued his strong commitment of love until he said good-bye.

He is survived by his parents, Jeffrey and Donna Marie of Lansing; two sisters, Savanna, 5, and Selina, 2; his grandparents, Thomas and Wanda Dinsmore of Grand Ledge and Ronald and Yvonne Seavolt of Charlotte; aunts Shellie (Robert) Rasmussen of Charlotte, Carolyn (Thomas) Foster of Alpena, Judy (Gordon) Long of Mt. Pleasant, Diana Liams of Grand Ledge; one uncle, LeVon Seavolt of Traverse City; and several aunts, uncles, cousins, family members and friends.

Celebration of Life services were Dec. 9 at the Holihan-Atkin Funeral Home, Grand Ledge. Interment was in the Meadowbrook Cemetery, Mulliken.

Memorial contributions may be made to the National Children’s Cancer Society, 1015 Locust, Suite 600, St. Louis, Mo. 63101.

Elisabeth Selden

Elisabeth Ellen (Storm) Selden, 80, of Olivet, died Monday, June 12, 2000 after a two-year struggle with cancer.

Mrs. Selden was born Dec. 29, 1919 in Calgary, Alberta, Canada, the daughter of William Burns and Nellie (Haley) Storm. She grew up in DeKalb, Ill. After graduation from high school, she attended Northern Illinois University and Olivet College, where she earned a bachelor of arts degree in English literature. She and Willis Selden were married May 30, 1942 in Olivet. They have lived in Michigan, Illinois, Minnesota and Virginia, and abroad including several trips to Turkey. Mrs. Selden led a long and active life of volunteer, and occasionally paid, work. She worked for the Democratic party in Minnesota and Virginia. Her activities during her last 25 years, when she lived in Olivet, included being the secretary of the Olivet Congregational Church, and a member of the Fanny Quick Circle of the Church. She was active in the Olivet College Alumni Association, the American Association of University Women, and the Olivet College Women’s Board for which she worked many years at the Oak Chest Thrift Shop in aid of scholarships for women to Olivet College. She was also a member of the Bulb and Blossom Garden Club. She held leadership positions in all of these organizations. She was a keen gardener and bird watcher. Although Mrs. Selden died as the victim of a cruelly aggressive disease, she nonetheless was able to chose her manner of doing so, in her own home, with the life and voices of her loving family going on around her, in a room full of flowers and books, with windows letting in the sounds of birds and the patterns of leaves and branches – all very important elements to her in her long and active life.

Surviving are her husband, Willis Arthur Selden; children, Elisabeth Cakir, Ramsay William, Anne Berry and Caroline Barnett; grandchildren, Mine Cakir, Bulent Cakir, Charles, Thaddeus, Eldon Colby, Winter Colby, David Colby, Emily Colby and Heather Woods; great-grandchildren, Eleanora Colby and Ozan Nampha; brothers, Robert McLeod Storm and William Bruce Storm; and sister, Barbara Storm Jolley.

Memorial services were held June 16 at the Olivet Congregational Church.

Betty Senko

Betty Jane, Senko, 75, of Lansing died Jan. 12, 2000.

Mrs. Senko was born Oct. 17, 1924 in Mayville, the daughter of Wilbur and E. Caroline Bates. She was a sales associate at J.C. Penny’s.

She is survived by one daughter, Carolyn (Tommy) Mahon of Charlotte; three sons, Lon of Charlotte, Robert (Denise) of Boulder City, Nev., and Gary (Yvonne) of Eaton Rapids; 11 grandchildren; 10 great-grandchildren; one sister, Lucille (William) Sandhoof II of Braden, Fla.; and one brother-in-law, Donald (Judee) Senko of Plymouth.

She was preceded in death by her husband, Francis “Frank” in 1997.

Visitation is today, Sunday, from 3 to 6 p.m. at the Pray Funeral Home, Charlotte.

Services are Monday, Jan. 17, at 10:30 a.m. at the funeral home, Charlotte, with Pastor Noel Hall-Niemann officiating. Interment is in the Deepdale Mausoleum, Lansing.

Memorial contributions may be made to VFW Post #2406 Auxiliary Cancer Fund.

Audrey Sexmith

Audrey Jane Sexmith, 80, died Wednesday, Jan. 5, 2000 in Muskegon.

Mrs. Sexmith was born in Charlotte on Dec. 7, 1919 to Carl Allen and Marguarite (Marple) Cox, and married Donald Sexmith in Charlotte in 1941. She had been employed as an organist at First Congregational Church in Charlotte, Greenfield Congregational Church in Dearborn, and First Congregational Church of Muskegon where she was also a member and served as a volunteer. Additionally, she had worked playing the organ for Howe-Peterson Funeral Home in Dearborn, and was also active in accompanying students for solo and ensemble. She was a member of the Friends of Art, American Guild of Organist’s-Detroit Chapter, and volunteered for the American Red Cross.

Surviving are one daughter, Susan (Dennis) Emmons of N. Muskegon; two granddaughters, Kimberly (Ted) Brayton and Julie Emmons; two great-grandchildren, Benjamin and Betsy Brayton; one brother, William Cox of Charlotte; aunt, June (Dorance) Marple of Charlotte; and, nephew, Frank.

She was preceded in death by her husband, Donald, on Sept. 2, 1984; brother-in-law and sister-in-law, Louis and Katherine Hanson; and by sister-in-law, Dorris Cox.

Services were held Jan. 15 at First Congregational Church, Muskegon, with Rev. Thomas Mason and Rev. Betsy Skinner officiating. Interment was at First Congregational Church Columbarium.

Charlene M. Shaver

Charlene Marie Davids Shaver, 45, died Dec. 18, 2000 following a year-long illness.

Mrs. Shaver was born May 18, 1955, the daughter of Donald and Florence (Smith) Davids and grew up in Charlotte. She graduated from Olivet Adult Education in 1978 and worked at Core Technology in Lansing and, for many years, in the medical field before that. She was a member of the Nazarene Church, Holt. She greatly enjoyed time spent with her son and other family members and many friends.

She is survived by one son, Joshua; two sisters, Donna (Jack) Oestrick of Austin, Texas, and Florence Davids of Charlotte; and several aunts, uncles, cousins, nieces and nephews.

Services were Dec. 20 at the Pray Funeral Home, Charlotte, with Pastor Mike Prince celebrating. Interment was in the Needmore Cemetery, Roxand Township.

Memorial contributions may be made to the upcoming new Hospice House of Charlotte or St. Jude’s Children’s Research Hospital.

Marjorie Shaver

Marjorie Shaver, 73, of Lake Panasoffkee, Fla., formerly of Charlotte, died April 16, 2000 in Leesburg, Fla.

Mrs. Shaver was born in Charlotte and had been a homemaker and past member of the Lake Panasoffkee Library Association and the Kalamo Order of Eastern Star.

She is survived by one daughter, Penny Rosenburg of Lake Panasoffkee; one son, Dennis of Grand Ledge; five grandchildren; and 13 great-grandchildren.

Memorial services were April 20 at the First Baptist Church, Lake Panasoffkee, with the Rev. John King officiating. Interment was in the Florida National Cemetery, Bushnell.
