Herman Sluyter
Memorial services for Herman Sluyter were held Saturday, Jan. 22 at the Lawrence Avenue United Methodist Church, Charlotte, with the Rev. George Fleming officiating.
Mr. Sluyter, 92, of Charlotte and Okemos, died Dec. 19, 1999 at the Eaton County Medical Care Facility, Charlotte.
Arrangements were made by the Hall Funeral Chapel, Manton. Interment was in the Liberty Township Cemetery, Manton.
Kenneth Smalley
Kenneth Smalley Jr., 73, of Nashville, formerly of Potterville, died Sunday, Sept. 24, 2000 at the Laurels of Bedford Nursing Home after an extended illness.
Mr. Smalley was born in Potterville, the son of Kenneth and Merna (Green) Smalley, and was a career U.S. Navy veteran, having served 28 years.
Surviving are one son, Jerry Smalley of Bloomfield, N.M.; two sisters, JoAnn Teichman of Charlotte and Bernadine Raines of Lansing; and two brothers, John and Francis “Smokey”, both of Potterville.
He was preceded in death by his wife, Mary (Fell) Smalley on Jan. 25, 2000.
Cremation has taken place; there will be no services.

Mary Smalley
Mary Smalley 78, of Nashville, formerly of Potterville, died Jan. 25, 2000 at the Battle Creek Health System-Leila Site, after an extended illness.
Mrs. Smalley was born in Clinton County, the daughter of Howard and Kate Fell. She was a homemaker and had been employed for a time at General Motors Corporation.
She is survived by her husband, Kenneth.
Cremation has taken place. There were no services.
Arrangements were made by the Burkhead-Green Funeral Home, Charlotte.
Ebba Sorensen
Ebba Sorensen, 95, of Charlotte died May 7, 2000.
Mrs. Sorensen was born March 31, 1905 in Woburn, Mass., the daughter of Carl and Agnes (Petersen) Nielsen. She was a member of Peace Lutheran Church, Charlotte, had taught Sunday School and sang in the choir for many years.
She is survived by two daughters, Dorothy (Robert, M.D.) Leeser of Charlotte and Edna Mae (James) Earle of Livonia; two sons, Robert (Pamela) of Jacksonville, Fla., and David (Pamela) of Grand Rapids; 14 grandchildren; 17 great-grandchildren; and two sisters, Ruth Nielsen of Minn. and Astrid Romundstad of Minnesota.
She was preceded in death by her husband, Aage Sorensen in 1984.
Services were May 10 at the Peace Lutheran Church, Charlotte, with Pastor Noel Hall-Niemann officiating. Interment was in the Woodlawn Cemetery, Detroit. Arrangements were made by the Pray Funeral Home, Charlotte.
Memorial contributions may be made to Hayes Green Beach Hospital, Charlotte.
Yolande Sosnowski
Yolande Maureen Sosnowski, 79, of Charlotte died May 15, 2000 at the home of her daughter.
Mrs. Sosnowski was born in France Dec. 9, 1920, the daughter of August and Marguerite (Dillon) Salmon. She had been a customer service representative for many years with Empire Bank and the National Bank of Detroit.
She is survived by two daughters, Yvonne (Whitey) Kayne II of Charlotte and Colette (Edward) Jones of St. Clair Shores; one son, Michael (Dawn) Dolsen of Clinton Township; six grandchildren; and three great-grandchildren.
She was preceded in death by her first husband, Thomas Dolsen Jr., and second husband, Harry Sosnowski.
A private family memorial service will be held at a later date with arrangements by the Pray Funeral Home, Charlotte.

Sharlot Sours
Sharlot Sours, 58, of Nashville, formerly of Olivet, died April 1, 2000 at Spectrum East (Blodgett Hospital), Grand Rapids, after a short illness.
Ms. Sours was born in Battle Creek, the daughter of Elliott and Marian (Smith) Sours and had been a Nashville resident since 1963, moving there from Olivet. She was high school math teacher in the Maple Valley School System where she had taught since 1963. She was a 1959 graduate of Olivet High School, 1963 graduate of Olivet College, and taken numerous Math and Science Foundation courses. She was a member of the National Education Association and Michigan Education Association, served as vice president of the Eaton County Education Association and president of the Maple Valley Education Association, was former member of the Business Professional Women, Delta Kappa Gamma Society and had been a member of Sigma Beta Sorority while attending Olivet College.
She is survived by one sister, Linda (Harley) Krauss of Olivet and one nephew, David Krauss of Olivet.
Services were April 5 at the Burkhead-Green Funeral Chapel, Charlotte, with the Rev. Clark Hock officiating. Interment was in the Bosworth Cemetery, Olivet.
Memorial contributions may be made to the Maple Valley Memorial Scholarship Foundation or American Cancer Society.
Bethel Spaulding
Bethel “Betty” Spaulding, 85, of Bellevue died May 13, 2000 at her home.
Mrs. Spaulding was born Feb. 21, 1915 in Olivet, the daughter of Carroll and Alice (Butler) Scott. She graduated from Charlotte High School and had been a lifelong area resident. She married Darrold Spaulding Nov. 22, 1933. She was a homemaker and member of the United Methodist Women and its Rachel Circle of the Bellevue United Methodist Church. She enjoyed playing golf, bowling, fishing, knitting, crocheting and spending time with her family. During World War II, she knitted sweaters and other items for servicemen and donated many pints of blood. She spent the last three winters in Florida.
She is survived by one daughter, Shirley (Gerald) Misch of Bellevue; one son, Gary (Andrea) Spaulding of Battle Creek; eight grandchildren; 10 great-grandchildren; and six great-great-grandchildren.
She was preceded in death by her husband, Darrold in 1988; her parents; two sisters, Ruth Spooner in 1938 and Dorothy Adams in 1975; and one grandson, Michael Misch in 1976.
Services were May 15 at the Shaw Funeral Home, Lehman Chapel, Bellevue, with the Rev. Bruce Rhodes officiating.

Charles E. ‘Junior’ Speckin
Charles E. ‘Junior’ Speckin, age 45 lived in Tucson, AZ until he had a sudden illness and died April 10, 2000. Junior was born on February 19, 1954 in St. Johns, MI. He moved to Eaton Rapids and lived there until December 1989. He was employed at Grable & Sons for 17 years until 1989 when he left to take care of his parents in Tombstone, AZ.
He is survived by his wife, Jackie and two children, Tammy Earls of Springport and Linda Speckin of Tucson, AZ; four grandchildren, Kimberly, Robert, James and Jazmine. He is also survived by his mother, Norma Speckin; two brothers, Marvin and George Speckin; 2 sisters, Linda Proctor and Carol Rutledge all of Arizona. He was preceded in death by his father, Charles E. Specking, Sr.
Junior will be greatly missed by family and friends.
Karen Spedowski
Karen J. Spedowski, 56, of Charlotte died April 26, 2000.
Mrs. Spedowski was born Aug. 25, 1943 in Big Rapids, the daughter of Roy and Helen (Berg) Adams. She was employed as a judicial secretary to the Honorable David McKeagan, U.S. District Court, Western District of Michigan. She was affiliated with the Federal Judicial Secretaries Association; a former member of the Lansing Legal Support Professionals, as well as the Michigan and National associations; and Michigan Ducks Unlimited, serving that organization as recording secretary, its annual meeting chair in 1993, and its first Ladies State Coordinator, establishing seven new ladies fund raising events through Michigan. She was also an active member of St. Mary’s Catholic Church, Charlotte, serving as a member of the Parish Council and Trustee of St. Mary’s Educational Trust. She was also a member of the Lansing Diocese Pastoral Council.
She is survived by one daughter, Denise (Keith) Droscha of Charlotte; one son, Paul (Cheryl) of Charlotte; four granddaughters, Kaelyn and Whitney Droscha and Amelia Jiminez, all of Charlotte, and Beth Spedowski of Watersmeet; three sisters, Nancy (Steve) Starks of Coopersville, Nancy (Jerry) Wright and Sandra (Alvin) Eastlund, both of Reed City; four brothers, Gary (Janet) Adams of Mecosta, Kevin (Portia) Adams of Clermont, Fla., Michael Adams of Mount Pleasant and Bruce (Patty) Goldammer of Alpena; her father-in-law, Joseph of Irons; and brothers and sisters-in-law, Jerry (Nancy) Spedowski, Joseph (Nancy) Spedowski, Jeffrey (Barbara) Spedowski, all of Big Rapids and Jordan (Jackie) Spedowski of Reed City; numerous aunts, uncles, nieces, nephews and cousins; and her special friend, Rebecca Bell of Ann Arbor.
She was preceded in death by her husband, James, in 1996 and her parents.
Services were April 29 at St. Mary’s Catholic Church with Fr. Thomas Nenneau officiating. Interment was in the Center Eaton Cemetery, Eaton Township. Arrangements were made by the Pray Funeral Home, Charlotte.
Memorial contributions may be made to the St. Mary’s Educational Trust Fund.
Francis Stump
Francis N. Stump, 81, of Charlotte, formerly of Lansing, died Feb. 1, 2000 at his residence after an extended illness.
Mr. Stump was born in Westphalia and had lived in Charlotte since October 1998, coming from West Virginia. Previously he had lived in Lansing and had been employed by the Motor Wheel Corporation, retiring in 1980 after 35 years of service. He was a U.S. Army veteran.
He is survived by four daughters, Mildred Holcomb of Charlotte, Kimm (Thomas) Griffin of Lansing, Helen (Donald) DeBie of Florida, and Frances Rouse of Lansing; one son, Harry (Joan) of Pennsylvania; one daughter-in-law, Lois Rouse of Oklahoma; 20 grandchildren; and numerous great-grandchildren and great-great-grandchildren.
He was preceded in death by his wife, Marjorie in 1985, one son, Mahlon in 1989, one son-in-law, Marvin Holcomb in 1998, two brothers and one sister.
Services were Feb. 4 at the Burkhead-Green Funeral Chapel, Charlotte, with Pastor Jan Hite officiating. Cremation followed the service.
