Evelo M. Fulton
Evelo M. Fulton, 84, of Charlotte, passed away Sunday, May 15, 2005 at her residence.
Mrs. Fulton was born July 17, 1920 in Flint, the daughter of Charles S. and Hazel A. (Berry) Michael and had resided in Charlotte since 1947. She was a 1938 graduate of Flint Northern High School, attended Flint Junior College for two years, and graduated from Albion College in 1942. She was a member of Delta Gamma Sorority. Mrs. Fulton taught in the Greenville schools from 1942 to 1947 and began teaching in Charlotte schools in 1947 and taught there until her retirement from teaching. She was employed at Fulton Lumber Co., where she also served as secretary of the board of directors until her retirement. She was a member of First Congregational Church UCC and its Blanche Moyer Circle, served on the board of trustees, was moderator, Christian Education superintendent, a member of the Women’s Fellowship and the Wedding Committee. Mrs. Fulton was coordinator of American Red Cross blood drives for 20 years, was a 50-year member of Hayes Green Beach Hospital Auxiliary, served as a Campfire Girls leader, was a member of the Charlotte Women’s Club, was a recipient of the Rotary Community Service Award, received a Rotary Paul Harris Fellowship and received a city of Charlotte Cornerstone Award. She was seamstress for all the activities her children were involved in, from plays to weddings, as well being involved in many additional activities too numerous to mention.
Vivian Kabler Garlinghouse
Vivian Kabler Garlinghouse died Tuesday, Sept. 13, 2005 while surrounded by her family, after a year of battling a very aggressive cancer.
Mrs. Garlinghouse was born in San Diego, Calif., in 1931, and lived in Florida, Tennessee, New York, Switzerland, France, Turkey, Hawaii, Rhode Island, Washington D.C., the Philippines, Wisconsin, and Michigan during her well-traveled life, moving at last to Holland, Mich., to be close to her children. She was a resident of Freedom Village, where she enjoyed many close friendships, was active in the Freedom Follies, and participated in fund-raising efforts for a variety of good causes.
Mrs. Garlinghouse served her country all her life as first the daughter, then the wife and finally the mother of Naval officers. She sacrificed a great deal in this service, and served in many social leadership roles within the many communities and service bases where she lived during her career. She was a hostess, a gourmet cook, a genial and witty host, an avid reader and gardener, and a fast and faithful friend to hundred of people she came to know and love during her life. Her family knows her best as a devoted, tireless and protective wife, mother and grandmother, whose maternal gifts extended to people and pets alike.
She is survived by her husband of 53 years, Capt. Bruce B. Garlinghouse, USN Ret.; her children, Bill Garlinghouse and Mary Yocum, Bob and Diana Garlinghouse, Jack and Julie Ridl, and Carrie Andrews and Paul Fredrickson; and grandchildren, Chris and Joey Garlinghouse, Katherine and Allison Garlinghouse, and Meridith Ridl and Jason Kalajainen; and by Ranger, Zoey, Stafford, Charles, Idgy, Ruth and Millie.
She was a member of St. Francis de Sales Catholic Church, where a mass was held in her memory on Sept. 20. A private interment service was held at the Garlinghouse family plot in Charlotte.
Memorial contributions may be made to Hospice of Holland or the Alzheimer’s Association of West Michigan. Arrangements were by Notier Ver Lee Langeland Funeral Chapel, Holland.
Delores Garrett
Delores Garrett, 66, of Vermontville, passed away peacefully Thursday, May 19, 2005 at her home.
Delores was born in Traverse City on Nov. 15, 1938. She was the daughter of the late Ralph and Edna (Chandler) Ward. Her family moved to the Muskegon area shortly after Delores was born. She spent her childhood in the Muskegon area, where she attended area schools.
Delores was the wife of Donald Garrett. The couple met in 1973, and were married one year later on March 8, 1974 in Muskegon. The couple built their home together in Vermontville, where they raised their family. They have been married for 31 years.
Delores was an avid gardener. She enjoyed working in her flower garden; she especially enjoyed spending time with her beloved grandchildren.
Delores is survived by her husband of 31 years, Donald; daughter, Donna (Joseph) Allwardt; sons, George (Melanie) Garrett, Dale (Jolene) Garrett, and Don E. (Autumn) Garrett; sister, Arlene (Ronald) Schmuck; brothers, Dale (Anita) Ward, Richard (Sharon) Ward; and 11 grandchildren. Delores was preceded in death by her daughter Linda, and brothers, Robert Ward and Lawrence “Larry” Ward.
Eugene L. “John” Garvie
Eugene Lavern “John” Garvie, 75, of Vermontville, passed away Saturday, April 30, 2005 at Eaton Community Hospice in Charlotte.
Mr. Garvie was born March 22, 1930 in Lansing, the son of Harold Solon and Velma (Link) Garvie. John married Marie M. (Fuller) Garvie June 12, 1964. He was a member of Sunfield Church of the Brethren, and a board member. He retired from Oldsmobile after 30 years, semi-driver, and dispatch, and also was former sexton of the Sunfield Twp. cemeteries for many years.
Mr. Garvie was preceded in death by both his parents, and three sons, Robert, Lonnie and James Garvie.
Surviving is his wife, Marie M. Garvie; nine children, Neil (Jessie) Garvie of Angola, Ind., Johnny (Dora) Garvie of Lansing, Tonna (David) Grubb of Burr Oak, Sheila (Gilbert) Monroy of Battle Creek, Ricky Garvie, Kelly (Jesse) Bogard of Indiana, Tina Estrada of Three Rivers, Karen Garvie of Sturgis, and Scott Garvie of Vermontville; step-children, Jeannine (Larry) Ames of Blanchard, and Debra Lowe of Washington; many grandchildren and great grandchildren; and four nieces and nephews.
Funeral services were held May 4 at Rosier Funeral Home, Mapes-Fisher Chapel, Sunfield, with Rev. Mary Gult officiating. Full Navy military rites were performed at Sunfield Cemetery following the service. Pallbearers were Gilbert Monroy, Albert Monroy, Robert Monroy, Roy Monroy, David Grubb Jr. and Matthew Persing.
The Garvie family expressed appreciation to everyone for their prayers, cards, flowers and calls.

Scott Garvie
Scott Eugene Garvie, 42, of Bellevue, died Tuesday, March 1, 2005. Mr. Garvie was born Sept. 15, 1962, in Charlotte, the son of the late Clarence and the late Doris (Casler) Garvie.
He is survived by daughter Charity Garvie of Potterville and son Jeremy Garvie of Alma, and one granddaughter, sister Cheri Cain of Olivet, and brothers Dale and Lynn Garvie, both of Charlotte.
Memorial service will be held at a later date.

Frances L. Gates
Frances L. (Moore) Gates, 95, of Wauwatosa, Wis., formerly of Charlotte, passed away March 28, 2005.
Mrs. Gates was born Feb. 11, 1910 in Lyons, to Hattie L. (Stanton) and L.G. “Garrie” Moore. She was a graduate of Charlotte High School and attended Olivet College for two years, studying art.
At age 12, Mrs. Gates was one of the first six Campfire Girls in Charlotte. During the years she was married to Warren Hasemeier, she worked with and for Charlotte-area girls. In 1941, she helped start the Horizon club in Charlotte. It was her dream that Charlotte-area Campfire Girls, Girl Scouts and girls from other youth clubs have a recreation camp. As president of the Charlotte Girls Recreation Camp Board, she devoted many hours to organizing and fund-raising for that dream to become a reality. The original rustic log cabin was completed in 1954 at what is known as Camp Frances. That cabin burned in 1971 and was replaced by the present cabin.
After leaving Charlotte, Mrs. Gates owned and operated a small beef cattle farm for several years near Charlottesville, Va. After moving to Florida she became an avid golfer. She married Willard “Doc” Gates and they enjoyed golfing and traveling together. A year ago she moved from Stuart, Fla., to the Milwaukee, Wis., area so her nephew William Moore could see to care. Her quick wit, sense of humor, laugh, sense of style and art work were enjoyed by those who knew her.
She is survived by her sister, Ruth Landes of Charlotte; several nieces, nephews and cousins; and two special friends who helped care for her in Florida, Joanna and Lisa.
She was preceded in death by her husband, Doc; her parents; her brothers, Raymond Moore and Stanton “Pete” Moore; and a sister, Beatrice (Moore) Cass.
Family members will visit Camp Frances Monday, May 23 at 10:30 a.m. Anyone who knew her or is interested in Camp Frances is invited to join them.

Jakob Brett Gates
Jakob Brett Gates was born November 7, 2001 at Hayes Green Beach Hospital in Charlotte, Michigan was called to heaven on March 11, 2005. Jakob was a sweet boy who brightened the lives of everyone who knew and loved him.
Jakob is survived by his parents, Brett and Jennifer (Knapp) Gates of Lansing; grandparents, Ron and Beth Knapp of Eaton Rapids and David and Carol Gates of Eaton Rapids; great grandparents, Pete and Ardis Bates of Eaton Rapids and Mary Knapp of Grand Ledge; Aunts and Uncles, Brian and Kristen (Gates) Fell on Onondaga, Jim and Sheryl (Gates) Ayers of Lansing and Aunt Lindsey Knapp, of Lansing; and many cousins.
Funeral services will be held Thursday, March 17 at 1:00 in the afternoon. The family will receive friends at the Funeral Home from 11:00 a.m. until service time. Lila May Gayton
Lila May Gayton of Eaton Rapids, age 87, died Monday, December 26, 2005 in Jackson TN. She was born January 19, 1918 in Jackson, Michigan the daughter of Charles and Lillie (Lutz) Standish. Mrs. Gayton was a member of the First Congregational Church in Eaton Rapids. She served as a Librarian for the Union Street School in Eaton Rapids for 17 years retiring in 1983. Lila was a member of the Thursday Morning Lady’s Golf League at Bonnie View and an avid seamstress and walker. She was preceded in death by her husband Don Gayton; and brothers, Loyal and Chuck Standish.
Surviving are her son, Bill (Phyllis) Gayton of Jackson, TN; 2 grandchildren, Jeffrey Gayton of Jackson, TN and Colleen (Greg) Dzurik of Plano, TX; sister, Helen Brockie of Jackson; sisters-in-law, Beulah and Ruth Standish; several nieces and nephews.
