Thelma I. Brownell
Thelma I. Brownell, 84, passed away Friday, Sept. 2, 2005 in Lansing.
She was born Sept. 10, 1920 in Shreveport, La. Thelma and George, her husband of 59 years, lived in the Plainwell, Potterville and Lansing areas; George preceded her in death in January of 2004. She retired after 34 years of service from Michigan Bell Telephone Co., where she was a night chief operator. Thelma enjoyed spending time with her family, especially her grandchildren.
She is survived by a daughter, Patricia (Jack) Wardell of Charlotte; grandchildren, George, Paul and Jon Sherman, Robin Maldonado, Nan Sherman, Russell Wardell, Jackie Putnam and Julie Poufcas; many great and great-great grandchildren; and in-laws, nieces and nephews.
Funeral services were held Sept. 6 at the Shelly-Odell Funeral Home, Eaton Rapids, with Elder bill Kasten of the Congregation of Jehovah’s Witnesses officiating. Interment followed at Perry Cemetery in Brookfield Township. Casket bearers were George Sherman, Paul Sherman, Jon Sherman, Scott Ferguson, David Sproul and Andrew Sherman.
Memorial contributions may be made to the American Red Cross, Hurricane Relief Fund or Kingdom Hall of Jehovah Witnesses, Eaton Rapids.
Gene D. Brubaker
Gene Duane Brubaker, 75, of Charlotte, passed away April 25, 2005.
He was born Oct. 21, 1929 in Visalia, Calif., where he worked with his father on a dairy farm. He sold farm machinery in Nebraska, Iowa and Michigan, and was a prison guard for the Michigan prison system. Later he was a caretaker for Gloor Properties. Duane had attended First Baptist Church in Charlotte and Calvary Church in Grand Rapids. He was a kind man with a big heart who will be missed by his close friends in Charlotte; the Bryan VanSkike family, the Marlin Gloor family and the Duane Nichols family.
Duane is survived by his wife, Donna; daughter, Vickie of Essex, Iowa; sister, Myrna (William) Mackie of Orange, Calif.; four nieces and two nephews.
He was preceded in death by his son, Christopher, and his sister, Marian Clawson.
Memorial services will be held at 1 p.m. Saturday, May 14 at First Baptist Church of Charlotte, with Raymond Rossell officiating. Interment is in Shenandoah, Iowa.
In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to Eaton Community Hospice, 2675 S. Cochran Ave., Charlotte, MI 48813. Arrangements were by Burkhead-Green Funeral Home in Charlotte.
James H. Brugh
James H. “Gerald” Brugh, 83, of Battle Creek, formerly of Charlotte, died Tuesday, Sept. 20, 2005 at his residence.
Mr. Brugh was born Sept. 2, 1922 in Brookfield Township, Eaton County, the son of William and Hazel (Perry) Brugh and had been a Battle Creek resident since 1961, coming from Charlotte. While in Charlotte, he was employed at Aluminum Extrusions and operated Brugh’s Heating. Since moving to Battle Creek, he had been a Star Route contractor for the U.S. Postal Service, was employed at Clark Equipment and was owner/operator of A-One Lawn Mower Sales & Service. He was a member of Calvary Baptist church in Battle Creek.
Surviving are his wife of almost 60 years, Betty Jeanne (Payne) Brugh; three daughters, Janice (Gerald) Mills of Aurora, Ill., Penny (Michael) Decker of Battle Creek and Julie (Michael) Armstrong of Battle Creek; sis grandchildren and seven great grandchildren.
He was preceded in death by his parents; two brothers, Harry and Lawrence Brugh; and two sisters, Blanche Reed and Bertha Scott.
Funeral services were held Sept. 24 at Burkhead-Green Funeral Home, Charlotte, with Pastor Brian Spencer officiating. Interment was at Perry Cemetery, Brookfield Township.
Memorial contributions may be made to the American Diabetes Association.
Charles E. Brumm
Charles E. Brumm, 61, of Vermontville, passed away peacefully Wednesday, June 8, 2005 at Pennock Hospital, Hastings.
Mr. Brumm was born in Kalkaska on July 31, 1943, the son of the late Clyde and Evy Rowley. When Charlie was just a baby he was adopted by Carter and Anna-Mae Brumm. He was raised in the Nashville area and attended are schools, graduating from Maple Valley High School.
In June 1965 while Charlie was serving his country in the U.S. Army, he married Stawrula Giakousiklidou in Germany. When the couple returned to the United States they made their home in Vermontville, where they raised their family together. Charlie spent the majority of his working career as an over-the-road truck driver. He owned and operated his own truck for more than 20 years, until he retired in 2003. He enjoyed bowling, playing miniature golf and being on the road.
He is survived by his wife of 40 years, Stawrula; his daughter, Katrina Brumm; sister, Ingrid Simpson; and brothers, Vernon Brumm, David Rowley and Sunny Rowley.
He was preceded in death by his sister, Cora, who passed in 2005.
Funeral services were held Friday, June 17 at Fort Custer National Cemetery, with Pastor Sunny Rowley officiating.

Inez Ruby Brunton
Inez Ruby Brunton, age 98, of Eaton Rapids, died Thursday, July 14, 2005 at the Fairview Adult Foster Care Home in Grand Ledge. Inez was born March 28, 1907 in Eaton Rapids, the daughter of Frank and Maude (Farmer) Mapes. Mrs. Brunton was raised on a farm and for most of her life lived the life of a farmer’s wife. She was a member of the First Baptist church in Eaton Rapids and had been very active at the Eaton Rapids Senior Center and the Mad Hatters Band. She was preceded in death by three husbands, Clare Higdon, Vern Halifax and Claire Brunton.
Surviving are 3 children, Robert (Peggy) Higdon of Lansing, Louis (Don) VanSluyters of DeWitt and Ronald Higdon of Charlotte; 7 grandchildren, 18 great grandchildren and several great-great grandchildren.
Funeral services were held on Monday, July 18th from the Skinner Funeral Home in Eaton Rapids. Burial followed in the Munger Cemetery in Eaton Rapids Township, next to her husband Vern Halifax. For those desiring, memorial contributions may be made to either, the Heartland Hospice, Fairview Adult Foster Care Home or the First Baptist Church in Eaton Rapids. Envelopes are available at the funeral home.
Mary L. Brzycki
Mary L. Brzycki, 80, of Charlotte, died Monday, Aug. 29, 2005 at her residence after a short illness.
Mrs. Brzycki was born May 3, 1925 in Kalamo Township, Eaton County, the daughter of Merlin and Essie (Baker) Rich and was a lifelong area resident. She enjoyed spending time with her children and grandchildren because they were most important to her. She enjoyed going to garage sales with her husband and liked gardening and her flowers.
Surviving are her husband of 58 years, Edward Brzycki; five children, Barbra (George) Quillan of Morristown, N.J., Jim (Sandra) Brzycki of Charlotte, Jane (Jay) Cobb of Charlotte, Elaine (LeRoy) Cook of Bellevue and Rosalie (John) Conroy of Charlotte; 12 grandchildren and three great grandchildren; sister, Helen Robinson of Shaftsburg; and half-brother, Jon Rich of Bellevue.
She was preceded in death by her daughter, Marilyn Baum in 1976; sisters, Bethel Reader and Madeline Wyble; and a brother, Albert Rich.
Funeral services were held Sept. 1 at Burkhead-Green Funeral Home, Charlotte, with Rev. Darwin Kuhl officiating. Interment was at West Carmel Cemetery.
Memorial contributions may be made to the charity of one’s choice.
Howard K. Buck
Howard Kendall Buck, known as “Kendall”, 91, of Hastings, passed away May 2, 2005 at Moore’s Adult Foster Care in Charlotte.
Mr. Buck was born Nov. 10, 1913 in Barry County, the son of John Byington Buck and Anna (Shriber) Buck. Kendall graduated from Woodland High School. He later became a journeyman tool and die maker, working 42 years in machine shops, including more than 32 years at the E.W. Bliss Company in Hastings.
Kendall married Ethel Alice Crook on Jan. 9, 1937, and together they raised five children on the family farm. They had been married 66 years when Ethel passed away in May of 2003. Kendall lived his entire life in the Hastings area, except for the last three years, which were spent living in Charlotte with his son and daughter-in-law, Douglas and Nola Buck. When he was younger, he enjoyed traveling, hunting, fishing and working in his vegetable garden. The last few years he like to go out for lunch and then spend warm afternoons sitting on the back patio watching the birds, squirrels and bunnies enjoying their lives.
Mr. Buck was preceded in death by his wife; his parents; a brother, Oscar Buck; grandson, Allen Buck; and several half brothers and sisters.
Surviving are his five children, Doreen (John) Campbell of Charlotte, Douglas (Nola) Buck of Charlotte, Lawrence “Eddy” (Barbara) Buck of Hastings, Marjorie (Dennis) Weingardt of Denver, Colo., Roseanne (David) Beehler of Golden, Colo.; grandchildren< Joan (Michael) Brennan, Thomas Campbell, Kimberlee (Ruben) Mars, Stephanie Buck, Stacey Buck, Nicholas Weingardt, Laura Weingardt, Brandon Beehler, Ryan Beehler, Michelle Beehler; great grandchildren, Samuel, Patrick and Margaret Brennan, and Samantha and Carson Campbell and their mother, Laurie Campbell; two sisters, Orpha Enz-Desgranges and Ascsah Munson-Evrard; and many nieces and nephews.
Memorial services will be held Thursday, May 26 at 11 a.m. at Welcome Corners United Methodist Church, with Rev. Robert Smith officiating. Memorial contributions may be made to Welcome Corners United Methodist Church, 3185 N. M-43 Hwy., Hastings, MI 49058; or the charity of one’s choice. Burial will be at Fuller Cemetery, following the luncheon at the church. Arrangements are by Girrbach Funeral Home in Hastings.
Robert J. Buffenbarger
Robert J. Buffenbarger, 86, of Kalkaska, died Monday, Sept. 5, 2005.
Mr. Buffenbargar was born July 22, 1919 in Eaton County, the son of Emmon and Bertha (Lung) Buffenbarger. Robert retired from Maeward Coupling in 1981. He was a World War II veteran and served more than three years in the South Pacific. Bob loved music and played euphonium for the Central Michigan Area Concert Band for 14 years. In 2004 he performed as a guest artist with the 126th Infantry National Guard Band.
He is survived by his wife, Elaine, of 60 years; son, Robert II (Pam) of Charlotte; daughter, Debra (Dion) Balliet of Kalkaska; brother, Frank “Budd” Buffenbarger of Segola; sister, Lile (Sam) Southern of Charlotte; four grandchildren and two great grandchildren.
He was preceded in death by a sister, Bernice Gilbert.
Funeral services were held Sept. 8 at Pray Funeral Home, Charlotte, with Rev. Larry Brown officiating. Interment was at Maple Hill Cemetery in Charlotte.
