Ralph E. Byron
Ralph Edward Byron, 87, of Newberry, died Friday, April 8, 2005.
Mr. Byron was born March 27, 1918 in Saginaw, the son of Ernest and Mary (Walker) Byron. Ralph was a retired skilled trade pipefitter for General Motors. He enjoyed plumbing and was a licensed journey plumber and had worked for Luce County as a plumbing inspector. He loved nature and fly-fishing. In 1934 he was awarded a Hero’s Award by the Saginaw Chapter of Automobile Clubs of Michigan for saving a person from drowning.
He is survived by his wife, Agnes (Richards) Byron; stepson, Carl (Lorraine) Burton of Charlotte; son, Ralph (Tina) Byron Jr. of Nevada; daughter, Carolyn (Merle) Anderson of Newberry; 12 grandchildren, 13 great grandchildren and three great-great grandchildren.
A private memorial service will be held.

Carol A. Cain
Carol A. Cain, 69, of Ludington, died Monday, Aug. 1, 2005 at her home.
Carol A. Whitney was born June 14, 1936 in Grand Ledge, the daughter of Paul and Geraldine (Reed) Whitney. She grew up in Charlotte, where she graduated from high school with the class of 1954. She was married June 14, 1953 to Joe Cain; he survives. Carol had worked as a receptionist in a physician’s office for a period of time and then, following their move to Ludington, owned and operated Ventura Motel, along with her husband, from 1979 to 1987. During the 1980s, she was 3rd Ward commissioner. More recently, the couple wintered in Florida, where Carol was active in the BPOE. She enjoyed spending time with her family, quilting, ceramics and travel.
Surviving is one son, Mark (Lillie) Cain of Ludington; two daughters, Dawn Cain of Ludington and Diana Cain of Norton Shores; and Mike (Cindy) Parkinson of Bellevue, who was like a son to her. Also surviving are one sister, Marti (Gil) Hayward of Hudson, Fla.; and one brother, Paul (Phyllis) Whitney of Mears; 12 grandchildren and eight great grandchildren.
In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by one son, Robin Cain, who died in 1974.
Funeral services were held Aug. 6 at Dorrell Funeral Home Chapel, Ludington, with Rev. James Schroeder of Our Savior Lutheran Church officiating. Interment was at Maple Hill Cemetery in Charlotte.

Kathleen E. Callahan
Kathleen Elizabeth Callahan, 61, of Sunfield, died Thursday, May 12, 2005 at a Lansing hospital.
Kathleen was born March 23, 1944 in Albion, the daughter of Robert Eugene and M. Emogene (Kaiser) Callahan. Kathleen attended Sunfield United Brethren Church, and the Sunfield United Methodist Church. She was an active member of the Red Hat Society in Sunfield, and enjoyed her evolvement with the Sunfield Library. She was employed for more than 30 years with the state of Michigan Department of Agriculture and the Department of Corrections.
Kathleen was preceded in death by both her parents.
Surviving are her closest friend, Charlene Goff of Sunfield; brother, Dennis Callahan of New Hampshire; nephews, Michael (Christy) Callahan of DeWitt; niece, Jennifer (Ken) Bagwell of East Leroy; two grand nieces, Mackenzie and Olivia; and two grand nephews, Jack and Joe.
A memorial service was held May 19 at Sunfield United Brethren Church. Memorial contributions may be made to the Sunfield Library in memory of Kathleen, C/O RFH P.O. Box 36 Sunfield, MI 48890. Arrangements were by Rosier Funeral Home in Sunfield.
Jonathan P. Callender
Jonathan Paul Callender, 63, of Dimondale, formerly of Charlotte, died Monday, May 30, 2005 at Eaton Community Hospice House.
Mr. Callender was born April 18, 1942 in Detroit, the son of Paul and Eleanor (Poupard) Callender. The family moved to the Charlotte area in 1945. Jon graduated from Charlotte High School, lettering in football, track and basketball. He received a Bachelor of Arts from Michigan State University in 1966, a Master of Business Administration from Western Michigan University in 1969 and also attended Albion College. During college he developed an interest in stock car racing and was inducted into the Michigan Hall of Fame of the National Hot Rod Association, in 1997.
He first worked at Ford Motor Company as district manager until he took over his father’s business, Callender Sign Company. During this time he was recognized by the National Republican Congressional Committee as an honorary state chairman of their Business Advisory Council, in the Wall Street Journal. Jon started in the Simmental breeding business in the late ‘70s and went on to become one of the top Simmental breeders in America. He was named to the board of trustees of the American Simmental Association from 1982 to 1988. He operated this business from Singletree Farms in Charlotte.
He is survived by his “Duchess”, Barbara, his loving wife of 25 years; his “favorite son,” Jonathan Paul II; his daughter, Kathryn Hayden “Mouse” Callender; his sister, Susan Callender; mother-in-law, Elinor Zielinski of Manistee; sisters-in-law, Martie (Ken) Cawthorne of Canadian Lakes, Mich., Jane (Bill) Forrester of Simi Valley, Calif.; brother-in-law, Bill (Cathy) Zielinski of Chicago, Ill.; and numerous nieces and nephews.
He was preceded in death by his parents.
A memorial service will be held at 3 p.m. Friday, June 10 at Olivet Congregational Church, with Pastor Mike Fales officiating. Visitation will be from 7 to 9 p.m. Thursday, June 9 at Pray Funeral Home in Charlotte.

Viola D. Casey
Viola D. (Sandquist) Casey, 92, of Charlotte, died Tuesday, Jan. 25, 2005 at the Middlebelt-Hope Health Care Center in Livonia.
Mrs. Casey was born Jan. 16, 1913 in Clarence, Ill., the daughter of Edward and Sigrid (Bylander) Sandquist. She had been a member of Gresham United Methodist Church.
She was preceded in death by her son, Richard E. Casey, in 1962; and husband, Roger E. Casey, in 1985.
Surviving are her daughter, Margaret (Wendell) Ryckman of Redford; three granddaughters and six great grandchildren.
Funeral services were held Jan. 29 at Burkhead-Green Funeral Home, Charlotte, with Wendell “Joe” Ryckman (son-in-law) officiating. Interment was at Maple Hill Cemetery.
Memorial contributions may be made to Eaton Community Hospice in Charlotte.
Ardith G. Castle
Ardith G. (Corwin) Castle, 82, of Vermontville, formerly of Portland, passed away Thursday, Feb. 24, 2005 peacefully at Sparrow Hospital in Lansing.
Mrs. Castle was born in DeWitt on Oct. 9,, 1922, the daughter of the late Amiel and Ila (Parks) Seils. Ardith was raised in the DeWitt area and attended area schools there, graduating two years ahead of her calss from DeWitt High School. On June 30, 1942 in Fresno, Calif., she married Clarence Corwin, who was serving in the U.S. Army and stationed in California. Ardith traveled by train to California for the couple’s wedding. When Clarence was discharged from the Army, the couple moved back to the Mulliken area, where they owned and operated Corwin’s Market for more than 20 years, until it was sold in 1964. The couple had been married for 35 years when Clarence passed away in 1975. She had enjoyed square dancing with him. Ardith also enjoyed reading, putting puzzles together and watching birds and squirrels. She was a member of First Baptist Church of Portland and the Order of the Eastern Star.
She is survived by her daughters, Jean (Bill) Meyer, Alice (John) McCliggot and Charlene Ladisky; sisters, June Detwiler, Bertha Seils; 16 grandchildren and 31 great grandchildren.
She was preceded in death by her husband, Clarence; second husband, Harrison Castle; son, Chester C. Corwin; daughter, Joyce Fye Haigh; two grandsons, Erick William Ladisky and Mathew James Corwin; and a sister, Nadene.
Funeral services were held Feb. 28 at Vermontville United Methodist Church, with Pastor Kathy Smith and Rev. Mason Corwin officiating. Interment was at Meadowbrook Cemetery in Mulliken.
Memorial contributions may be made to the family. Arrangements were by Daniels Funeral Home in Nashville.
Marilyn Chaffee
Marilyn J. Chaffee, 69, of Nashville, passed away Tuesday, Dec. 6, 2005 at her home in Maple Grove Township.
Mrs. Chaffee was born July 2, 1936 in Hart, the daughter of the late Emil and Alice (Swift) Wahl. She was raised in the Hart area and attended Walkerville High School, graduating in 1954.
She was the wife of Richard Chaffee, whom she married June 2, 1962 in Quimby. The couple lived in the Hastings area for several years, they moved to the Nashville area in 1967 where they raised their family together.
Marilyn loved to dance, play cards and listen to music. She also enjoyed traveling with her husband, Richard; they especially enjoyed going on cruises together. The couple owned and operated the Nashville Locker. After 30 years in business, the couple retired in 1999. During that summer they traveled throughout the country and spent some very special time in Alaska. Richard and Marilyn have been married for 43 years.
Marilyn is survived by her husband, Richard; son, Brian (Gale) Chaffee; sisters, Eunice Jones, Inez Lursema, Margie Watts and Shirley (Duane) Ward; grandson, Patrick (Annie) Chaffee; and granddaughter, Jessica Chaffee.
She was preceded in death by her brothers, Herbert and Harold Wahl; and her sisters, Pear Pike and Olive Pyle.
Memorial contributions may be made to the maple Grove Ambulance or Fire Department.

Julius W. (Brother) Chahye
One the 23rd day of April 2005, at the age 91, this faithful and loving servant of our Lord Jesus Christ was born into his eternal glory. This was the goal of (Brother) Julius Chahye’s entire life.
Thousands of prayers were lifted to Heaven by Julius for those that passed through his life. His love for his fellow man was only exceeded by his immense and endless love, devotion and servant-hood to His Savior. His prayer, ever on his lips was the joy of salvation for all. His witness, love and joy touched hundreds of lives and hearts. He lived the true call and challenge of Christianity and walked the walk as well as spoke the Word.
His recent home and last three years of his life were lived here in Eaton Rapids with his daughter and son-in-law, Donna and Bill Motz. His loving and welcoming church home during that time was Eaton Rapids Assembly of God church. Prior to this period of his life he lived in Lorain, Ohio, where he served Broadway Assembly Church for 52 years as: deacon, board member, Sunday school bus captain and teacher, hospital ministry, home-bound ministry, prison ministry and Evangelizing.
He leaves behind two cherished and loving daughters: Anita (Larry) Garber of Mentor, Ohio, and Donna (Bill) Motz of Eaton Rapids; a beloved sister; three treasured grandchildren and four precious great grandchildren, and many priceless friends.
A memorial and home-going celebration service will be held at Eaton Rapids Assembly of God Church, Wednesday, May 4, 2005, 2764 S. Michigan Rd. from 7:00-8:30 p.m. with Pastor Jim Riley officiating.
