Rowland K. Perry

Rowland K. Perry, 71, of Charlotte, passed away on Friday, August 6, 2010. Rowland was born Feb. 3, 1939 in Charlotte, the son of Lawrence and Genevieve (Hooper) Perry and was a lifelong Charlotte area resident. He was a graduate of Charlotte High School and had served in the U.S. Army from 1962 to 64. He had been employed at the former A. E./Hoover Co. and later at the Bradford-White Co. from where he retired in 2001. He was a member of the Eaton County Buck Club and the Charlotte American Legion Post #42.

Surviving are: his wife of 50 years, Marilyn (Davidson) Perry; two daughters, Vickie (Doug) Blattner of Charlotte and Amee (Darrin) King of Grand Ledge; four grandchildren, Tyler and Jessica Cwiek and Kyle and Evan King; special grandson, Chad and Cody Reichard; his brother, Neil (Lana) Perry of Charlotte and special cousins, Dean and Esther Shrontz.

He was preceded in death by his parents.

Funeral services were held Monday, Aug. 9, 2010 at the Burkhead-Green Funeral Home in Charlotte with Rev. Philip Hobson officiating. Interment was in the West Carmel Cemetery. Memorial contributions may go to the Eaton Community Hospice in Charlotte.

Carolyn L. Pettit

Carolyn Lee Pettit, of Sunfield, passed away March 13, 2010 at Sparrow Hospital in Lansing at the age of 68. She was born June 30, 1941 in Charlotte, the daughter of James N. and Anna Belle (Wilcox) Pettit.

Ms. Pettit was a home health care aide, and a member of St. Edward Catholic Church. She enjoyed quilting and knitting.

She was preceded in death by both her parents; infant siblings, Richard Eugene and Patty Ann. Surviving are her daughter, Connie Pettit of Ionia; brother, Robert J. (Robin) Pettit of Wasilla, Alaska; two nieces and one nephew. A prayer service was held March 18 at the Rosier Funeral Home, Mapes-Fisher Chapel, Sunfield. Burial took place in the West Windsor Cemetery. In lieu of flowers, the family requests that contributions go to a trust for her daughter, Connie Pettit. Carl Leroy Pickworth Sr

Carl Leroy Pickworth Sr., of Eaton Rapids, MI, age 65, passed away Monday, January 25, 2010 at Sparrow Hospital in Lansing, MI. Carl was born October 22, 1944 in Eaton Rapids, MI to Donald Floyd and Florinda (Craun) Pickworth. He was a former Delta Township Volunteer Fireman and a member of the Eaton Rapids Historical Society. He retired from General Motors in 1997 after 30 years of service at Fisher Body and the Oldsmobile Engine Plant. Carl enjoyed auctions, hunting, baking pies, and restoring John Deere tractors.

Carl is survived by his children, Carl L. Jr. (Jennifer) Pickworth of Eaton Rapids, Scott Pickworth of Lansing, Kenneth, Tina, Carla and Tim Pickworth all of Texas; four grandchildren: Jessica Wilson, Alyssa, Logan and Carson Pickworth; brothers and sisters: Ron (Karen) Pickworth of Jacksonville, FL, Don (Barb) Pickworth of Jackson, MI, Priscilla (Phil) Davidson of Eaton Rapids, MI, Richard (Linnea) Pickworth of Mason, MI, Floyd (Linda) Pickworth of Lansing, MI, Kathy (Steve) Spooner of Holt, MI; special friend Linda Siegrist; several nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by his wife, Vicki (Maltby); son, Tracy Pickworth and his parents.

Funeral services were held on Thursday, January 28, 2010 at the Shelly-Odell Funeral Home, 518 S. Main, Eaton Rapids, MI. Pastor Rocky Wing officiated. Interment will be at Delta Center Cemetery, Lansing, MI. Memorial contributions may be made to the American Cancer Society in memory of Carl. .

Mary F. Plsek

Mary F. Plsek, 94, formerly of Charlotte, entered into God’s eternal rest on Thursday, December 16, 2010. Mrs. Plsek was born July 16, 1916 in Charlotte, MI the daughter of Joseph and Anna (Gregarek) Jankovich.

Mrs. Plsek was a secretary for the Eaton Intermediate School District. She was a lifetime member of St. Mary Catholic Church, served on the Altar Society and sang in the choir. Mrs. Plsek graduated from Charlotte High School in 1934. She was a 4-H Leader and spent winters in Florida, she also enjoyed gardening, sewing, golfing and biking.

She is survived by daughter, Carolyn Plseik of Bloomfield Hills, MI; son, Milan Plsek of Tenary, MI; and niece Barbara (Donald) Slider of Noblesville, IN. She was preceded in death by her loving husband of 54 years, Joseph Plsek.

Funeral services were held 11:00 a.m. Saturday, December 18, 2010 at St., Mary catholic Church with Rev. Father Francis Mossholder officiating. Interment was in Maple Hill Cemetery, Charlotte, MI. A rosary was held at 7:00 p.m. Friday, December 17, 2010 at Pray Funeral Home. If desired, memorial contributions may be made to St. Mary Catholic Church or the Fox Run Department of Philanthropy Scholarship Fund or Benevolent Care Fund. Arrangements by Pray Funeral Home, Charlotte, MI.

Jack R. Popp

Jack, age 86, died on July 24, 2010 surrounded by his daughter, Sonja Seaks of Eaton Rapids, daughter-in-law Diana Popp and son, Richard Popp of Grand Ledge. He is survived by five grandchildren and seven great grandchildren.

Jack was born in the railroad town of Durand, MI. He moved with his family to Grand Haven. His love of dancing and music led to his playing alto sax in a swing band during his high school years. He graduated high school in 1942 and entered military service in March, 1943. He served in “Charley Company, 1st Battalion, 387th Infantry Regiment, 97th Infantry Division in Germany, Czechoslovakia and Japan until March, 1946.

Jack married Bernice M. (Mullen) Miller in June, 1946. Together they lived in Grand Rapids, Eaton Rapids and moved to Grand Haven in 1953. There they lived until November 1964 when they moved to Lansing. Jack worked for GM until he retired in 1986. They moved to Grand Ledge in 1966 where they built a home near the Grand River. Jack continued there after Bernie passed in February, 20000. He moved to assisted living in Independence Village, Grand Ledge on Christmas Eve, 2009 where he received wonderful care from the Harbors staff and Hospice until the end.

Jack was a worker and always had a song in his heart. He was forever whistling Glen Miller tunes as he worked on his home and property. His family and friends love and miss him very much.

Martha A. Porter

Martha A. Porter, 70, of Charlotte, died April 22, 2010 at Eaton community Hospice. She was born Sept. 28, 1939 in Romulus, Mich., the daughter of Julius J. and Ruth (Roberts) Celske. Martha was united in marriage to Harold E. Porter on Feb. 9, 1957 in Ypsilanti, Mich. Martha loved to be a homemaker. She also enjoyed bingo, gardening and traveling. Martha was preceded in death by her parents and sisters, Christina Lewis and Ladonna Werley.

She is survived by her husband, Harold; children, Nancy Porter of Potterville, Michael (Carmen) Porter of Marietta, Ga.; four grandchildren, two great grandchildren, sister, Zella (Sam) Ruggerillo of Canton; brothers, Junior (June) Celske of Romulus, John (Marion) Celske of Roseville and Richard (Beth) Celske of Romulus.

Funeral services took place Tuesday, April 27, 2010 at Shaw Funeral Home, Lehman Chapel with Pastor Bill Blevins officiating. Interment at Riverside Cemetery, Bellevue.

Memorials may be made to Susan G. Komen Breast Cancer Foundation. The family is being served by Shaw Funeral Home, Lehman Chapel, Bellevue.

Donald Lee Powell

Donald Lee Powell of Eaton Rapids, age 74, passed away at his home in Eaton Rapids July 3, 2010. He was born in Webberville, MI on January 24, 1936, the son of Kenneth and Dorothy (Goyt) Powell. He served in the Navy from 1953-1957 during the Korean War where he was an Aviation Machinist’s Mate 3rd class Petty Officer on the USS Tinconderoga. Donald married Betty Jo Cook on January 21, 1957 and together they made a home for their six children. He retired from Oldsmobile after 17 years of service.

Donald is survived by his daughters, Rebecca Jo (Louis) Steele of Destin, FL, Peggy (Floyd) Byron of Eaton Rapids; sons, Donald Dale (Irene) Powell of Dimondale, Johnny Carl (Heather) Powell of Eaton Rapids, Ronald Lynn (Tina) Powell of Eaton Rapids; daughter-in-law, Cathy Powell of Lead Hill, AR; 12 grandchildren and 16 great grandchildren. He was preceded in death by his wife of 48 years; son Richard Lee Powell and brother, Kenneth Powell.

The celebration of our father’s life will be held 11 a.m. Wednesday, July 7, 2010 at the Shelly-Odell Funeral Home, 518 S. Main St. Eaton Rapids with Pastor David Kingsbury officiating. Visitation will be Tuesday from 3-5 p.m. and 6-8 p.m. Interment will be at Rosehill Cemetery. In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to the American Cancer Society, 3315 S. Pennsylvania Ave, Lansing, MI 48910.

Richard Lee Powell

Richard Lee Powell, 46, of Yellville AR, passed away on May 10, 2010. He was born in Eaton Rapids, MI, on March 25, 1964 the son of Donald and Betty Jo Powell.

He is survived by his wife of 25 years, Cathy (Stevens) Powell; son, Jacob (Stepheny) Powell of Omaha AR, son, Tracey Powell of Yellville, AR; grandchildren, Stephanie, Coalton, Benjamin; siblings, Peggy (Floyd) Byron, Dale (Irene) Powell, Johnny (Heather) Powell, Lynn (Tina) Powell and Becky (Louie) Steele. He was preceded in death by his loving mother Betty Jo Powell.

Laurel M. Pray

Laurel Marie Pray, 83, of Charlotte, died December 4, 2010. She was born October 19, 1927 in Grand Ledge, the first daughter of Wilbur and Marcella (Batsche) Starr. She spent her early childhood on a country farm where she learned frugality in a nation recovering from the Great Depression.

The family moved to Charlotte while she was in fifth grade where she met Joe Pray who years later would become her husband.

Laurel attended Michigan State University and in 1951, received her Michigan Funeral Directors License. She worked alongside her husband Joe at the Pray Funeral Home, becoming an integral part of the family business.

In 1963, Laurel talked her father and brother into building the family cottage in Northern Michigan. It quickly became the family’s favorite place to retreat.

Laurel loved to travel, especially to the Caribbean and Colorado with friends; gardening in her gardens around her home and funeral home; sewing, and shopping. She enjoyed finding those out of the way places to shop whether it was a dusty antique store in northern Michigan, or a wide spot on the jungle trail in Chile.

Laurel became known as the consummate hostess for family and friends during the Holidays, Christmas, Fourth of July, and Charlotte Frontier Days.

Laurel will be remembered by many for her community involvement, including Camp Fire Girls, Jaycees Auxiliary, Christmas Kiddies, GFWC-Charlotte for over 50 years, Charlotte Library Board, and St. Mary Church, where she was a founder of the St. Mary School.

Laurel is survived by her husband of 62 years, Joseph, their daughter Teresa (Michael) Dougherty of Frankfort, Ill.; son, Joe E. (Lori) Pray of Charlotte; grandchildren, Tyler (Dana) Pray and McLain Pray; her sibling, Jerry (Fern) Starr, Arthur (Gail) Starr of Pinkey, Jeannette Sommer and David Starr.

The Funeral Mass was held at St. Mary’s Catholic Church in Charlotte, with Rev. Fr. Francis Mossholder officiating. Burial followed at Maple Hill Cemetery.

If desired, memorial contributions may be made to St. Mary’s School or the Pray Family Fund II of the Eaton County Community Foundation.
