Oliver V. Bush
Oliver V. Bush, 81, of Nashville, passed away Thursday, Feb. 18, 2010 peacefully at Pennock Hospital in Hastings. Oliver was born in Grand Ledge on July 21, 1928, the son of the late James and Esther (Shance) Bush. He was raised in the Grand Ledge area and attended local schools graduating from Grand Ledge High School in 1948. He was the husband of Betty (McGill) Bush. The couple was married at the Grand Ledge Methodist Church on Nov. 1, 1963. They made their home in the Grand Ledge area where they raised their family together. After retiring, Oliver and Betty relocated to the Nashville area to be closer to their church community at Nashville Baptist Burch. Oliver and Betty have been married for over 46 years.
Oliver was employed as an auto body repairman for the State of Michigan for over 17 years and later as a claims adjuster with Farm Bureau Insurance before retiring in 1996. Throughout the years, Oliver owned his own body shop and has done work for several area body shops in the Grand Ledge area. Body shops would often rely on Oliver’s expertise and years of experience when complicated and difficult repairs were necessary.
Even in his spare time Oliver was building something. He enjoyed building different types of boats, and even built his own airplane. The airplane build was a success despite reaching an altitude of only eight feet before landing. It was Oliver’s attention to detail that set him apart as a true craftsman. When Olivet wasn’t working on a project, he and Betty loved going camping and to travel. Over the years, the couple has traveled over all the United States and enjoyed a cruise in the Hawaiian Islands.
He was preceded in death by his brother, Maynard; his sisters, Lottie, Gloria; and two infant brothers that died at birth.
Oliver is survived by his daughter, Shelley (Vance) Higdon; two sons, Gary (Carol) Bush, Terry (Cheryl) Bush; seven grandchildren and seven great-grandchildren. Funeral services were held at the Nashville Baptist Church Monday Feb. 22, with Lester DeGroot officiating.

Jacqueline K. Butler
Jacqueline K. (Coon) Butler passed away Thursday April 8, 2010 at Eaton Community Hospice in Charlotte at the age of 69. Jackie was born in Lansing on Sept. 3, 1940.
She was a resident of the Sunfield area most of her life, having been involved in many community activities. Jackie enjoyed many years of bowling, in various leagues in the area, served on the Executive Board of the Sunfield United Methodist Church, was an elected member of the Sunfield Village Council, a former Den Mother, Girl Scout leader, 4-H leader, original group to form the Jay-Cettes of Sunfield.
She was preceded in death by her husband, Allen Butler in 2004, and her parents, Pete and Yvonne Coon. Surviving are sons, Scott and Brenda Butler of Tipp City, Ohio, and Jeff Butler of Sunfield; daughters, JoDee and Joe Eaton of Hastings, Julie and Russ King of Deavercreek, Ohio, Allison and John Aldrich of Lainsburg; sister, Sue Piper of Vicksburg; grandsons, Lance and Darren Eaton of Hastings; granddaughter, Zoe King of Beavercreek, Ohio. Funeral services were held Tuesday April 13, 2010 at the Sunfield United Methodist Church with Pastor Jeffrey Schrock and Rev. Eugene Moore officiating. Interment was in the Sunfield Cemetery. James L. Butterfield
In remembrance of a man well loved and a life well lived. James L. Butterfield, born September 9, 1934 in Detroit, Michigan and died October 20, 2010 in Lansing, Michigan.
Preceded in death by his parents, Ray and Mildred (Bennett) Butterfield and his high school sweetheart and wife of 44 years, Suzanne (Newton) Butterfield.
Jim found love a second time, to Wilma (Cummins) Krieter-Butterfield who is a blessing to his children and family. He graduated from Berkley High School, served in the U.S. Army, and worked for Mich. Bell telephone Co. where he retired in 1990. He had high standards, set goals, and taught his children and grandchildren, whom he cherished, to set goals, work hard, and enjoy life. He had poems and songs that resonated his thoughts on life. “Somebody said that it couldn’t be done but he with chuckle replied, that maybe it couldn’t but he would be one that wouldn’t say so till he tried.” There wasn’t anything he wouldn’t do for his family and friends.
He lives on in his children, Michele Butterfield-Juip and Gary Juip, Herbert Butterfield and carol (Childs) Butterfield, Judy (Butterfield) Capitano and Aron Butterfield; grandchildren, Nicole, Lisa, Sylvia, Quinn, James, Joshua, Kaleb, Suzie, Aaron and Abby; great grandchildren, Anna, Aedan, Olivia, Ryan and many more to come; his sister, Phyllis (Butterfield) and Ray Jansma; many nieces, nephews and friends and Walker and Fencerow.
Cremation has taken place. There will be no visitation. A Memorial Gathering and Luncheon was held at 11:30 a.m. Saturday, Oct. 23, 2010 at the Charlotte Country Club in Charlotte, MI. Walter H. Byrd
Walter H. Byrd, Eaton Rapids, went peacefully to be with the Lord on Feb. 24, 2010, at the age of 92.
He was preceded in death by his beloved wife, Dorothy L. Byrd, and their grandson, Michael S. Dewey.
He was one of twelve children born to John and Ella May Byrd on June 19, 1917, in Henry Country, Tenn. Joseph Byrd of Benecia, Calif. is his sole surviving sibling.
Walter was a devoted family man survived by three daughters, Joyce Peppel, Sue (Douglas) Brower, Kathy (Richard) Girth; six grandchildren, Timothy (Melissa) Austin, Tamara Austin, Amanda Girth (Drew Thompson), Brandee (David) west, and Joshua (Stephanie) Girth; and three great grandchildren, Brittany Austin, David West III, and Claire Girth.
he retired from the City of Lansing Municipal Market. Walter enjoyed his work, as well as the friendships he built at the market. He took pleasure in all types of repair work, gardening, country music, and playing guitar. Walter was a man who knew the Lord and lived the “Golden Rule”. Family and friends recall time after time when he provided help to someone in need with no thought for the weather or the hour of night.
Funeral services were held Monday, March 1 at the Gorsline Runciman Funeral Homes, Lansing. Interment followed in Chapel Hill Memorial Gardens, Lansing.

Beatrice E. Campbell
Beatrice Elizabeth Campbell, 100, passed away peacefully on December 31, 2010. She was born February 1, 1910, in Battle Creek, the second of six children born to Dennis and Grace (Hewitt) Struble. Bea was a modern woman living a very accomplished life of employment. She met the gentleman of her dreams, George Campbell and they were married on April 5, 1930. They enjoyed 64 years of marriage. George and Bea became parents to five sons; David, Gerry, Norm Dan and Brian. George and Bea loved to take trips together, quite often taking a grandchild or two with them. They spent winters in Charlotte Harbor, Fla. for many years. Bea was very creative; sewing dolls, crocheting frogs, painting ceramics, sketching pictures, painting pictures, and loved to bake cookies for her family. She was an avid bridge player, and loved gathering with her friends to play. Keeping up with the times was a fact of life for Bea, using her computer to keep in touch with family by emails, and pictures, and writing her family story for publication.
Bea’s family was first and foremost to her heart.
She is survived by sons David (Edna), Gerry (Shirley), daughter-in-law, Wilma, Dan and Brian (Sharon); 17 grandchildren; 35 great grandchildren; 23 great-great grandchildren with two more due in 2011; nephew Jack Skirvin who was raised as a sibling; many very special nieces and nephews, and cousins, and friends.
She is predeceased by husband; George; son, Norman; daughter-in-law, Judy; great grandson, David C. Tuckey and Corey Campbell; her siblings, Geraldine, Wilma, Thyra, Robert and Raymond.
A celebration of Bea’s life was held Tuesday, January 4, at the First Congregational Church of Olivet, with Greg Morrison officiating. If desired, memorial contributions may be made to Eaton Community Hospice, Marshall Oaklawn Hospital, or the First Congregational Church of Olivet. Arrangements were made by Pray Funeral Home in Charlotte.
William Carney
William Carney, 85, died Friday December 3, 2010. Mr. Carney was born June 22, 1925 in Dayton, Tennessee, the son of Thomas and Nell (Worthington) Carney.
He worked as a painter for Oldsmobile for 42 years. He enjoyed his horses and mules and taking his grandchildren to Charlotte Rodeo, horse shows and auctions.
He is survived by his children; son, William L. (Teena) Carney of Gore, OK; daughters, Charlotte Brace of Dowling, Sharon (Rick) Gleason of Lansing and Diane Courtier of Lansing, MI; daughter-in-law, Shari Carney of Nashville, MI; brothers, Warren Carney and Charles (Eula) Carney, both of Dayton, TN, Doyle Carney of Albertville, AL; grandchildren Rebecca (Chad), Danielle, Amy, Erin, Annie (Patrick), Nathan, Kathryn, Nick and Trisha; and four great grandchildren. He was preceded in death by his wife Lillian; son, Gary L. Carney; son-in-law, James L. Brace and siblings, Ethel Marler, Helen Devault, Irene Thornburg, Walt Carney, and Imogene Carney.
Funeral services will be 1:00 p.m. on Tuesday, December 7, 2010 at Vermontville Bible Church with Pastor Dan Smith officiating. Interment will be at Dimondale Cemetery. Visitation will be Monday from 4:00 to 8:00 p.m. at Pray Funeral Home, Charlotte, MI. His family wishes to tank all caregivers and Heartland Hospice nurses for all their loving care given to our Dad. Ethel June Carstens
Ethel June Carstens of Holt, age 94, passed away in Holt, January 23, 2010. She was born in Chicago, IL on June 15, 1915 the daughter of Henry and Pearl (Derby) Saska. Ethel grew up and attended high school in Owosso. She later attended nursing school in Flint. Ethel and her husband Arthur co-owned and published the Eaton Rapids Journal for 11 years. She and Arthur moved to Brownsville, TX where she did freelance writing for various national magazines. Ethel also wrote short stories for children’s magazines. She and her husband moved to NC where they worked for the daily paper before their retirement.
Ethel is survived by her daughters, Kay Carstens of MA, Carole (John) Boulton of KS; 11 grandchildren and 9 great grandchildren. She wasp receded in death by her parents; husband; sister, Eleanor Mumma; brothers Leonard, Marvin and Arnold Saska.
Memorial services will be held 11 a.m. on Tuesday January 26, 2010 at the First Congregational Church, 300 S. Main St. Eaton Rapids. Interment will be at Maple River Cemetery in Owosso. Memorial donations may be made to the Alzheimer’s Association Michigan Great Lakes Chapter, 107 April Drive, Suite 1, Ann Arbor, MI 48103. Arrangements were entrusted to the Shelly-Odell Funeral Home in Eaton Rapids. .
Karen S. Castaneda
Karen Sue Castaneda, 55, of Charlotte, died Saturday, October 16, 2010. She was an auditor and loan program analyst for the USDA. Funeral services were held Wednesday, October 20, 2010 at Pray Funeral Home in Charlotte.
Okie Caudill, Jr.
Okie Caudill Jr. of Eaton Rapids passed away Thursday, November 11, 2010 at the age of 49. Born December 29, 1960 in Lansing to Okie and Linda (Williams) Caudill. Okie received his GED from Eaton Rapids. He worked 7 years for Ryerson & Haynes of Lansing and later went on to work 15 years for Sigma Industries of Springport. He enjoyed snowmobiling, riding motorcycles, and going to the drag strip to watch the races. Preceding him in death was his father, Okie Caudill; grandmothers, Margaret (Watson) Williams Keeler, Minerva (Johnson) Caudill; grandfathers, Joseph Williams, Abel Caudill; uncle, Joseph Williams.
He is survived by his mother, Linda Caudill; step-mother, Maureen (Burton) Caudill; sisters, Velvet (Bob Richardson) Caudill, Melissa (William) Bursley, Stacy Lambert, Debbie (Terry) Shoopman, Amanda (David) Elliott, April Caudill; brothers, Russell (Joy) Caudill, Steven Caudill; nieces and nephews, Patrick Eichholtz, Kristin (Eric) Schrum, Donald Eichholtz, Sara (Dustin) Bartel, Lance Adkison, Zakkery Caudill, Karli Hunter, Khrissi Caudill, Hannah Shoopman, Macy Shoopman, Kirk Caudill, Ronald Stiles, Levi Morgan; great nephews, Caleb Schrum and Alexander Bartel.
