Albert L. Chamberlain
Albert Lee Chamberlain, 48, of Hastings, transitioned from this world into the arms of his heavenly Father on Thursday, March 18, 2010 with dignity and the love of his family surrounding him. He was born April 28, 1961 in Newport News, Va., son of SGM Robert and Patsy (Hill) Chamberlain.
He attended various schools around the country and enjoyed two years in elementary grades while living in France. He graduated form Anchor Bay High School, New Baltimore, Mich.
Albert Lee (livingly nicknamed “Yogi”) enlisted in the U.S. Marines. He studied in meteorology and sharp shooting. His passion began as a young artist, became a black belt in the martial arts and enjoyed educating others about the oriental languages. He loved reading and gained a tremendous knowledge in geographical locations and traveled throughout the United States, learning the history of our country. He and his dad enjoyed many excursions together and even drove to Alaska. He adored his nieces and nephews.
Albert was preceded in death by his three grandfathers, Albert Puttbrese, Lee Whitcomb, Max Hill; grandmothers, Madge Reed, Marguerite Whitcomb, Madeline Hill. He recently experienced the loss of Nancy Hill, a dear cousin.
He will be deeply missed by his parents, siblings, Tom and (Lynne) Krul, Bruce (Marilyn) Chamberlain and Robert Chamberlain; many aunts, uncles, and his grandma, Pauline (Hill) Puttbrese.
Memorial contributions may be made to the Red Cross in support of our Veterans and the American Cancer Society in Albert Lee’s honor.
Memorial services were held, Friday, March 26, 2010 at the Girrbach Funeral Home in Hastings. Full military honors were held at Irving Township Cemetery, immediately following services.

Calvin K. Cherry
Calvin K. Cherry, 54, of Charlotte, died Sunday, September 26, 2010. He was born December 17, 1955 in Charlotte, the son of Maurice and Rebecca (Hurlbut) Cherry. Calvin was an auto mechanic for Grand Ledge Foreign Car and loved playing golf.
He is survived by his daughter, Callie Cherry; son, Levi Cherry; sister, Linda (Tony) Reiff of Bluffton, Ind.,; brother, Eric (Gail) Cherry of Ellsworth; sister, Bonnie Cherry of Grand Ledge; sister, Maurine (Tom) Bethke of Harbor Springs.
Those wishing to honor Cal’s memory may donate to a trust to be established for his children. Donations may be directed to Bonnie Cherry. Arrangements were made by Pray Funeral Home in Charlotte.
Henry O. Clark
Henry O. Clark, formerly of Charlotte, passed away on Tuesday September 14, 2010 at the Ashley Care Center Ashley, Michigan, age 87 years. He was born on Oct. 13, 1922 in Grand Ledge to the late Floyd and Blanche (Freedman) Clark. He was a lifelong resident of Eaton County. He married Lora May Hoffner on March 16, 1946; they enjoyed 60 years of marriage. She preceded him in death on November 17, 2006. Henry was a retired farmer and member of the American and Michigan Jersey Cattle Clubs. Henry was a former manager of the Eaton County Fair Grounds. He was also an active life member of the Eaton Area Senior Citizens.
Surviving are his children, James Clark, Phoenix, Arizona; Jane (Mark) Johnston, Chesaning; Rae (Richard) Taylor, of New Haven, Indiana; 8 grandchildren and 5 great grandchildren. He was preceded in death by his wife and a brother, Floyd Clark.
A memorial service will be held in Charlotte on Oct. 23, 2010 at 11:00 a.m. from the Lawrence Ave. Methodist Church. Rev. Mark Johnston and Rev. Richard Taylor will officiate. Friends may call at the church after 10:00 a.m. Memorials are suggested to the Eaton Area Senior Citizens Center or the Michigan Jersey Cattle Club. Carl Dean Clarke
Carl Dean Clarke passed away Sunday, March 28, 2010 in Alpena, MI at the age of 71. Born November 18, 1938 to James and Dorothy (Towns) Clarke in Eaton Rapids, MI. Carl retired from the Laingsburg School district where he was a Biology teacher and coach of the track team from 1965 to 1982. From 1982-1995 he was the high school Principal. After retiring, Carl and his wife opened Birch Cove Cottages on Long Lake in Alpena. He enjoyed playing with his grandchildren, hunting, fishing, gardening, and spending time on the family farm. He was a handyman who could fix anything. Genuine, hardworking and caring, Carl will be dearly missed by all that knew him. Preceding him in death were his father; father-in-law, Al Lee; nieces, Lillian and Angel.
He is survived by his wife of 47 years, Rebecca (Lee) Clarke; son, Chris (Beth) Clarke; grandchildren, Ryan Wheeler, Jacob Clarke, Austin Clarke, Madeline Clarke; mother; sister, Carol (Kenneth) Janousek; brother, Robert (Denise) Clarke; loving in-laws and several nieces and nephews.
A memorial service will be held at 11:00 a.m. on Friday, April 16, 2010 at Skinner Funeral Home with a luncheon to follow. Family will receive friends at the funeral home on April 15 from 5-8 p.m. For those desiring, memorial contributions may be made to the National Kidney Foundation, or the American Cancer Society.
Scott D. Clarke
Scott Douglas Clarke, 52, of Charlotte, passed away suddenly on Friday, April 16, 2010. Mr. Clarke was born May 3, 1957 in Eaton Rapids, the son of Herbert and Shirley (Gregg) Clarke.
A lifelong resident of the area, Scott was a 1976 graduate of Charlotte High School.
He began his working career here and his many interests and talents led him to the carpentry and construction work he enjoyed so much.
Scott left his mark on many homes and farms in the area. He was an eager student of his craft and a patient teacher to his many helpers.
He cherished the time with his family and was always quick to praise those around him. Scott’s lively spirit and sense of humor will be missed.
He was preceded in death by his father, Herbert Clarke in 2004.
He is survived by his wife, Cathy Starkweather; children, Shane Starkweather, Shaun Wells, Shannon (Jim) Fenning; Sarah Wells (Casey Stone); grandchildren, Jimmy and Johnny Fenning and Carter Stone; mother, Shirley Clarke; brothers, David, Bruce and Bill; numerous aunts, uncles, nieces and nephews.
Funeral services were held Thursday, April 22, at Pray Funeral Home, Charlotte, with Reverend Larry Starkweather officiating.
Dorothy Catherine Coats
Dorothy Catherine Coats of Eaton Rapids, Michigan, loving mother and grandmother passed on Thursday, December 16, 2010 at the age of 92. Dorothy was born on October 14, 1918 in Weare Township, Hart, MI to Paul and Aurelia Malburg in a family of 12 children. She came to Eaton Rapids at age 16 to cook, clean and nanny for the Hansen family.
She met and married Vern Coats in 1938 with whom she had a daughter Arlene (Linton) Davidson; two sons, James (Pixie) and David (Reva) Coats; eight grandchildren and 16 great grandchildren. Dorothy was employed as a cook for the Eaton Rapids Community Hospital and retired as special dietary cook for Ingham Medical Hospital. Dorothy was an active and the oldest living member of St. Peter Catholic Church and was also an active member of the Altar Society. She was a member of the Literary Club at the church and the Eaton Rapids Child Study Club. Preceding her in death was her husband Vern Coats and husband George Boekhout.
Funeral Mass was held December 20th from St. Peter Church with Rev. Fr. Ben Constantine as celebrant. Burial followed at the Clarence Cemetery at Duck Lake. For those desiring memorial contributions may be made to either the St. Peter Altar Society or the Eaton Community Hospice in memory of Dorothy C. Coats.
Early Roy Cochran
Early Roy Cochran of Parma, Michigan, age 90 died Thursday, January 21, 2010 at the Faith Haven Senior Care Centre in Jackson. Born October 10, 1919 in Lamar, Arkansas the son of John and Lou (Freeman) Cochran. Early was the owner and operator of the Cochran Saw Mill in Tompkins Township. He was a handyman that could fix anything a real fixer upper. He enjoyed traveling with his second wife Florence in their motor home. Preceding him in death was his wife of 51 years, Ollie (Crowden) Cochran in 1989; 2 sons, Marvin in 1987 and Roy in 2008.
He is survived by his wife of 20 years, Florence Louise (Paschke) Cochran; 5 daughters and 2 sons, Helen (Jerry) Bolliner of Onondaga, Henry Cochran of Tompkins Center, Glen Cochran of Tompkins Center, Janice (Robert) Benson of Onondaga, Velda (Ray) Palmer of Eaton Rapids, Nellie (Greg) Dunkel of Spring Arbor and Patricia Johnson of Jackson; 26 grandchildren; 28 great grandchildren and numerous great-great grandchildren; many nieces and nephews.
Funeral services were held Saturday, January 23, 2010 from the Skinner Funeral Home in Eaton Rapids.
Mary Collins
Mary Collins of Eaton Rapids passed away Monday, May 3, 2010 at the age of 96. Born March 5, 1914 to John and Martha (King) Carrier in Tompkins Center, MI. Mary retired from I.G.A. Grocery Store in Eaton Rapids in 1976 where she worked as a clerk. She was a member of the Onondaga Community Church for over 50 years serving as the church’s treasurer for several of those years. Preceding her in death was her husband, Allyn Collins; parents; brother, Harold Carrier; and sister, Charlotte Swift.
She is survived by her sons, Bob (Bette) Collins, Richard (Debbie) Collins; daughters, Shirley Samels, Janet Dickerson; 16 grandchildren; 37 great grandchildren; and 1 great-great grandchild; as well as several nieces and nephews.
