Ida Ruth (Squires) Hendrickson
Ida Ruth (Squires) Hendrickson of Eaton Rapids, Michigan, age 83 of Eaton Rapids died on Saturday, September 11, 2010 at the Dimondale Nursing Home with her family by her side following a long battle with Parkinson’s Disease. Born September 30, 1926 in Eaton Rapids, the daughter of Clare and Alice (Main) Squires. Ida was an Eaton Rapids High School graduate, class of 1944 and had formerly worked for Rottenbucher’s Pharmacy in Eaton Rap[ids. She was a life member of the First United Methodist Church in Eaton Rapids and was a Volunteer with Meals on Wheels in Eaton County. Preceding her in death were her husband of 62 years, Leon in 2008; parents, Clare and Alice; son-in-law, Thomas Powers; brother, James Squires and sister-in-law and great friend, Doris Squires Kimmel.
She is survived by her 4 children, Sue Powers of Jackson, Robert (Julie) Hendrickson of Eaton Rapids; Cara (John) Colgan of Eaton Rapids and Neil (Jennie) Hendrickson of Lake Odessa; 9 grandchildren and four great grandchildren; 2 sisters, Janet Squires Dawson and Nancy Squires Smith both of Green Valley, AZ; several nieces and nephews.
Graveside services will be held on Wednesday, September 15, 2010 at 1:00 p.m. at the Rosehill Cemetery in Eaton Rapids. Family will receive friends at the Skinner Funeral Home in Eaton Rapids on Wednesday from 11:30 a.m. until departure with procession for graveside service at 1:00 p.m. For those desiring, memorial contribution may be made to the Parkinson’s Foundation in memory of Ida Hendrickson.
Mary Evelyn (Watts) Hernandez
Mary Evelyn (Watts) Hernandez of Eaton Rapids, Michigan, born September 11, 1936 in Dillon SC passed away on October 12, 2010 after a sudden illness at a Lansing hospital surrounded by her loving family. Mary retired from the Eaton Rapids High School as a custodian and had worked for several years at Les & Babes Party Store in Eaton Rapids. Her hobbies include camping with family and friends, trips to casinos, the Dollywood trip with her daughters and road trips down south to visit family. Mary also enjoyed watching WWE Wrestling. She was preceded in death by parents, Tracy Cook and Mary Cifelli; daughter, Betty Karen Watts; son, Richard Carl watts; and a sister, Betty Jo Powell.
She is survived by her loving husband, Dale of 6 years and loving children and stepchildren, Donald (Lonnie) Watts, Marsha (Bruce) Wood, Patricia (Paul) Baker, Bobbie Powers, Sandra (John) James, Connie (Dan) Parshall; stepchildren, George Hernandez, Jimmy (Shannon) Hernandez, Julian (Debbie) Hernandez, Jeff (Robin) Hernandez, Irma Hernandez and Raymond Hernandez; 31 grandchildren and 34 great grandchildren; sisters, Frances Turner and Peggy (Floyd) Byron; brother, Wayne (Mary) Miller; with lots of extended family and friends.
Memorial services were held on October 16, 2010 from the Skinner Funeral Home in Eaton Rapids. Mary will be sadly missed by her family and friends. Henry Herrst Sr.
Henry Herrst Sr., 78 passed away May 26, 2010. Henry was born August 30, 1931 in Ann Arbor, the son of John and Laura (Karr) Herrst.
He was a lifelong farmer and enjoyed going to auctions. Henry had a good sense of humor. He will be deeply missed by all who knew him.
Surviving are his three children, Henry Jr., of Charlotte, Alvin of Ypsilanti, Jacqueline Nortly of Britton, five grandchildren, three great grandchildren.
Catherine Hess
Catherine Hess, 93, of Nashville, passed away Saturday, November 27, 2010 at Thornapple Manor. Catherine was born in Coal Glen, Penn. on January 10, 1917, the daughter of the late William and Jane (Holland) Banks. She was raised in the Jefferson County, Penn. area and attended local schools. She moved to the Nashville area in 1955 so her three sons could find work opportunities.
She was the widow of Ray L. Whitaker who passed away in 1960. She then married Jack Hess on September 30, 1966. The couple made their home in Nashville. Jack passed away on March 8, 1989.
Catherine spent her working career in the housekeeping departments at Thornapple Manor for 20 years before retiring in 1979. Catherine loved dancing the polka, enjoyed traveling and especially loved her annual visits with her family back to Pennsylvania. Over the years she has visited Washington DC, New Jersey, Niagara Falls and Florida. She also did her annual walk over the Big Mac Bridge for 20-plus years. She loved to do various arts and crafts and decorating sweatshirts. Catherine was a wonderful cook; you could not visit her home without eating. Catherine was an avid homemaker who loved coloring Easter eggs with her grandchildren.
Catherine is survived by a daughter, Rita (Don) Wellman; sons, Larry (Cathy) Whitaker, James Whitaker; 14 grandchildren and many great grandchildren.
She was preceded in death by her husbands; her son, Harold “Bud” Whitaker; daughter, Anna Burd; granddaughter, Rene Burd and 11 brothers and sisters.
Funeral services were held Friday, December 3, 2010 at The Daniels Funeral Home, located at 9200 East M-79 Highway in Nashville, with Dennis Sergent officiating.

Emma Hettich
Emma Hettich, 77, of Charlotte, died Monday, Jan. 11, 2010. Ms. Hettich was born Oct. 21, 1932 in Santoy, Ohio, the daughter of Fred and Irene (Kish) Brannigan.
Ms. Hettich retired from General Motors after 31 years of service. She was a wonderful cook who started every recipe with a “one stick of butter” and would organize family gatherings by assigning dishes and then bringing more “just in case”. Ms. Hettich was always helping out and available to family and friends when they needed her. She was a very loving mother and grandmother who raised her seven children by herself and never expected anything in return. She will be greatly missed by all those who knew and loved her.
She was preceded in death by her son, Glenn in 1955 and Jack in 1989 and daughter, Rita in 1999.
She is survived by her daughter, Cindy (Trace) Hatt of Charlotte; son, Richard (Jan) Hettich of Holt; son, Jeff (Patricia) Hettich of Holt; daughter, Mona Hettich of Lansing; daughter, Colleen (Eric) Smith of Lansing; a host of many grandchildren; two great grandchildren; three sisters, Dolores Justice of Columbus, Ohio, Molly (Jack) McGee of New Lexington, Ohio, and Verna Brannigan of Upland, Ind., and brother, John Brannigan, Texas.
Funeral services were held Friday, Jan. 15, 2010 at Pray Funeral Home with Reverend Beth Grimshaw officiating. Interment was in Gresham Cemetery, Charlotte.

Kenneth L. Hewitt
Kenneth L. Hewitt, age 64, of Woodland, went to be with his Lord early Tuesday morning, April 27, 2010. Ken was born in Marshall, Mich. on January 24, 1946 to LaVerne and Leola (Henney) Hewitt. He graduated from Hastings High School in 1946. Ken was united in marriage to Carol Jackson on October 9, 1956. He had been employed at General Motors for 43 years. Ken had been an active member of the Lake Odessa Grace Brethren Church, where he taught Sunday school and was currently serving as a trustee. He had enjoyed bowling for many years, and he and Carol looked forward to spending summers at the lake in the Yankee Springs area.
Ken is survived by his wife, Carol; sons, Brad and Angie Hewitt of Rawlings, Who., and Trac Hewitt and special friend, Debbie Bartimus of Woodland; grandchildren, Chelsea Hewitt and fiancée, Nick Horstman, Mariah Hewitt, Bryan Hewitt, Aron Hewitt and Hunter Hewitt; great grandson, Remington Horstman; step-grandchildren, Jasmine, Carmen and Darion Pesce; parents, LaVerne and Leola Hewitt; brother, Tom (Sheri) Hewitt of Charlotte; and sister, Lou Ann (Jim) Apsey of Woodland.
The funeral service was held Friday, April 30 at the Koops Funeral Chapel. Burial will be in Woodland Memorial Park. Louis J. Hickey
Louis J. Hickey, 94, of Nashville, passed away Wednesday, Jan. 27, 2010 at his Nashville home. Louis was born in Nashville on June 15, 1915, the son of the late Daniel and Rosa (Maurer) Hickey.
He was raised in the Nashville area and attended local schools graduating from Nashville W.K. Kellogg High School in 1933 as the salutatorian for his class.
In August of 1941, Louis joined the United States Army. He was a member of the 101st M.P. Battalion, 5th Army Division serving in North Africa and Italy. He was honorably discharged in 1945.
He was the husband of Donna (Smith) Hickey. The couple was married on May 12, 1954.
They made their home together on the family farm where Louis himself was raised.
Louis was a lifelong farmer in the Nashville area, but also was employed at Randall Lumber Co. for 25 years managing the Vermontville store for 12 years. He also was the Manager of the Nashville CO-OP elevator for 10 years before retiring in 1982.
Louis was a member of the St. Cyril Catholic Church in Nashville.
He was preceded in death by his brothers, Joe, John Dan and Leo Hickey; sisters, Agnes, Josephine, Mary and Margaret; brothers-in-law, Faye Garvey, Carlyle Dean, Anthony Birch and John McIntee.
Louis is survived by his beloved wife, Donna; two sons, Patrick Hickey of Vermontville, Edward (Nora) Hickey, of Hickory Corners; his brother, Maurice Hickey of Lake Odessa; two granddaughters, Stephanie and Kelsey London of Hastings; son-in-law, Patrick London of Hastings and several nieces and nephews.
A Mass of Christian Burial was celebrated at St. Cyril Catholic Church in Nashville, on Saturday, Jan. 30, with Father Al Russell officiating. Interment took place immediately following the funeral service at Lakeview Cemetery Nashville.

Ralph Lavern Higdon
Ralph Lavern Higdon of Alma, formerly of Eaton Rapids, passed away December 5,2010 at the age of 92. He was born in Eaton Rapids, December 29, 1917, the son of Earl and Ethel (Priest) Higdon. He graduated from Eaton Rapids High School in 1936. Ralph served as an Artillery man for the US Army during WWII in Africa and Europe. He was a 60 years member of the Masonic Lodge #63 F & AM in Eaton Rapids and a member of the High Wheelers Club in Florida. Ralph was an avid outdoorsman and loved to hunt and fish. He also enjoyed wood carving, buying, selling and collecting antiques.
Ralph is survived by his sister, Arlene Andreas of Eaton Rapids; 12 nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by his wife, Marjorie; brothers, Floyd and Maynard Higdon; sisters, Alice Higdon, Lillian Dillin and Myrtle Kendall.
Memorial services will be 11 a.m. Thursday, December 16, 2010 at the Shell-Odell Funeral Home, 518 S. Main St. Eaton Rapids, with Pastor Daniel Hofmann officiating.
