Zella E. Masters
Zella E. (Kelley) Masters, 91, of Charlotte, died Wednesday, August 25, 2010 in Charlotte. She was born July 10, 1919 in Oneida Township, the daughter of Vivian and Anna (Forest) Kelley. She was born at home delivered by a woman doctor who had to travel seven miles with her horse and buggy to deliver the baby. She had been employed for many years at the Charlotte Schools Cafeteria and prior to that was employed at Recordio Corp. and the Newberry Dime Store. She enjoyed reading, jigsaw puzzles, playing cards, working in the garden and flowers but most of all, her family was extremely important to her.
Surviving is: four sons, Philip (Marilyn) Masters of Grand Rapids, Bruce (Diane) Masters of Charlotte, Gordon (Ronn Blodgett) Masters of Lansing and Rick (Debra) Masters of Ft. Wayne, Ind.; six grandchildren; 11 great grandchildren and brothers, Lester Kelley of Charlotte.
She was preceded in death by her husband, Lysle Masters in 2001 and brothers, Marvin Kelley.
Funeral services will be held at 1 p.m. on Saturday, August 28, 2010 at the Burkhead-Green Funeral Home in Charlotte with Pastor Timothy Olson officiating. Interment will be in the Maple Hill Cemetery. Visitation will be held on Friday from 5 to 8 p.m. at the funeral home. Memorial contributions may be made to the Sparrow Hospice.
Matthew J. Matteson
Matthew J. Matteson of Portland formerly of Eaton Rapids, age 31 passed away on Saturday, April 3, 2010 in Portland, MI. Matt was born on October 26, 1978 in Lansing, MI the son of Margo (Bob) Fuller and Kevin (Rene) Matteson. Matt worked for Identisys for the past 6 years and prior with Protocol for 10 years. Matt’s passions included his family, guitar, art, computers and his friends.
He is survived by his wife, Rhonda and their tow children; Novelle and Hunter; parents; brothers, Robert Fuller, Matthew Fuller, Brady (Bianca) Woodby; sisters, Teya (Arnie) Trombley, Jennifer (Gary) Hall, Kari (Tom) Page, Nicci Fuller and Kiersten Lower; several nieces and nephews.
Memorial services will be Thursday, April 8, 2010 at 11:00 a.m. at the Robbins United Methodist Church in rural Eaton Rapids. Family will receive friends at the church 1 hour prior to service time. Wallace “Wally” Bruce Matthews Jr.
Wallace “Wally” Bruce Matthews Jr. of Eaton Rapids and Haslett, age 81, passed away at home on Thursday, April 29, 2010 following a short but terminal illness. Born March 23, 1929 in Grand Rapids, Michigan; the son of W. Bruce and Doris (Sprague) Matthews. Wally graduated form Comstock Park High School and Michigan Sate University. He served in the Army during the Korean War and was stationed in Germany. His life was filled with service and kindness, and his career as Club Manager with Grand Haven Golf Club and Spring Meadows Country Club spanned 35 years. A member of the AMBUCS of Grand Haven, American Legion Post #28, Eaton Rapids Historical Society, Eaton Rapids Conservation Club and a life member of the NRA. Wally was an avid out-doors-man, with a passion for hunting, fishing and trapping. He enjoyed teaching his children and grandchildren the nuances and importance of nature. He was an accomplished musician; he played guitar, banjo and harmonica. Wally and wife, Carolyn played together with friends in a folk/bluegrass ensemble. Dad was a kind and gentleman who led by example, and was excited for others accomplishments. To us he was not only a father and grandfather but a mentor and a cheerleader. We are as proud of him as he was of us! Preceded in death was his wife of 50 years, Carolyn; son, William C. Matthews; grandson, Bar Joseph Matthews; brother, George Matthews.
He is survived by his partner, Mary Ann Wesley of Eaton Rapids; son, W. Bruce (Julie) Matthews III of Haslett; daughters, Susan Matthews of Grand Haven and Shelley (Dennis) Westrate of Fennville; 6 grandchildren, Benjamin (Julie) Matthews, Luke Matthews, Patrick (Brianna) Whalen, Kelly Whalen, Nancy Westrate and Betsey Westrate: 4 great grandchildren; brother, Gerald (Carol) Matthews; 2 sisters, Marilyn (Charles) Magee, Katherine (Ray) Dekmid; numerous nieces and nephews.
A memorial service for Wally will be Friday, May 21, 2010 at 12:00 p.m. noon at the American Legion Post #28 at 700 Harbor Ave. Grand Haven, Michigan 49417 with a luncheon to follow. The family is being served by the Skinner Funeral Home in Eaton Rapids.
Donald G. Maurer
Donald G. Maurer, age 73, of Charlotte, MI died Saturday, July 10, 2010. Mr. Maurer was born January 14, 1937 in Lansing, MI the son of Martin and Mildred (Peters) Maurer. He was an avid fisherman, hunter, bowler and golfer.
He is survived by his wife of 42 years, Kathleen Heany Maurer, and children: Don (Sheila) Maurer of Lansing, Martin(Lisa) Maurer of Bath, Pat Maurer of Michigan, Jack Maurer of Florida, Art Maurer of Tennessee, Debbie (Bobby) Winiarski of Houghton Lake, Sarah Oster of Florida, Coetta (Bruce) Davis of Charlotte and Scott (Michelle) Maurer of Tennessee. He has 25 grandchildren and 13 great grandchildren. He is also survived by his brother, Jim (Velma) Maurer of Harrison, and sisters: Sandy (Jerry) Perkins, and Vicky Ledesma both of Perry. He was preceded in death by his parents and one great grandson.
Funeral services will be Tuesday, July 13, 2010, at 1:00 p.m. at Pray Funeral Home with Honorable Thomas Eveland officiating. Arrangements by Pray Funeral Home, Charlotte.
Donald L. Mayhew
Donald L. Mayhew, 78, of Charlotte, died Tuesday, August 3, 2010. Donald was born September 22, 1931 in Clinton Township, the son of David and Martha (Lucks) Mayhew. He was employed by Consumers Energy as a supervisor where he retired in 1987. He served his country in the United States Air Force being stationed in Germany during the Korean War. Donald was a lifetime member of the VFW and a member of the Eaton Area Senior Center and had coached little league baseball when his kids were little. He enjoyed fishing, hunting, golfing and boating on Duck Lake. He loved spending time with his family and seven grandchildren, Sam, Molly, Ben, Nick Wiener, and Traci, Becky and Jake Kramer of whom he was very proud.
He is survived by his wife, Nancy; daughters, Pam Mayhew Wiener of Muskegon and Julie (Larry) Kramer of Potterville; seven grandchildren; brother, George (Betty) Mayhew of Texas, sisters, Josephine (Frank) VanLieshout of Wisconsin, Evelyn Wilson of Cedarville, and brother, Jim (Thelma) Mayhew of Charlotte.
He was preceded in death by his brothers, Macklin and Harold and sister, Harriett McBride.
Funeral services will be held at 2 p.m. Saturday, August 7, 2010 at Pray Funeral Home, Charlotte with Pastor Rebecca Morrison officiating. Interment will be in Maple Hill Cemetery in Charlotte. Visitation will be Friday, August 6, 2010 from 2 to 4 p.m. and 6 to 8 p.m. at Pray Funeral Home.

John “Jack” L. McAttee
John “Jack” L. McAttee of Eaton Rapids, age 74, passed away in Eaton Rapids, Friday, November 12, 2010. He was born in Lansing, July 27, 1936, the son of John and Helen (Holmes) MCAttee. Jack was a 1954 graduate of Sexton High School. He married Kay René (Hill) on May 22, 1976. Jack retired form Fisher Body in 2005 after over 51 years of service. He was a member of the UAW Local 602 and C.A.P. Council. Jack was also active in the Ingham Co. Democratic Party, Great Lakes United which was an organization to help preserve the Great Lakes, the Greyhound and Whippet Rescue Association, and Relay for Life Cancer Walk. He was a proud two time survivor of cancer. Jack also enjoyed golfing, bowling, hunting and fishing.
He is survived by his wife, Kay René (Hill) McAttee; daughter, Terri Bergey; sons, John, Robert and Greg McAttee; several grandchildren; mother-in-law, Marilyn Hill of Lansing; brother-in-law, Kevin (Kim Kampf) Hill of Jackson; sister-in-law, Denise (Gil) Hensley of KY; several nieces and nephews; brother, Alan (Yvonne) McAttee of Lansing. Jack was preceded in death by his parents and brother, Bill McAttee.
Memorial services will be 11 a.m. Wednesday, November 17, 2010 at the Shelly-Odell Funeral Home, 518 S. Main St. Eaton Rapids, with Pastor Daniel Hofmann officiating. Visitation will be one hour prior to the service. Memorial contributions may be made to the American Cancer Society, 3100 West Rd. Lois N. McDonald
Lois Naomi (Martin) McDonald, 79, of Charlotte, formerly of Potterville, died Sunday, Jan. 10, 2010. Lois was born March 20, 1930 in Owosso, the youngest of nine children born to George and Lillian (Parker) Martin.
Lois attended Owosso schools moving to Lansing during her senior year. She started her career in photo finishing which lasted her entire working career, retiring from the Photo-Mart. She loved to play gin, cribbage and bingo her entire life, but more so after retiring. She loved her family and always enjoyed her chocolates and a good cup of coffee and cigarette.
She was preceded in death by her husband, Arnold Nov. 16, 1996; granddaughter, Courtney Lumbert July 14, 1989 and eight brothers and sisters.
She met and married Arnold McDonald on June 15, 1951. To this union four children were born: Marty (Susan), Gregory (Diane), Rick (fiancé Barbara) and Lynda (Steven) Lumbert. She is also survived by five grandchildren, Michael and Sara McDonald, Stacie Lumbert, Andrew and Margaret McDonald; one sister, Doris Shoup and many nieces and nephews.
Cremation has taken place.
A memorial service was held Thursday, Jan. 14, 2010 at the Burkhead-Green Funeral Home, Charlotte with Rev. Rebecca Morrison officiating.

Gilbert Dean McKessy
Gilbert Dean McKessy of Eaton Rapids, MI, passed away on August 12, 2010 in Lansing, Michigan at the age of 77. Born April 30, 1933, the only son of Gaylord and Marguerite (Evans) McKessy. He lived most of his life on the family farm outside Eaton Rapids. A graduate of the Eaton Rapids High School. He and his father raised dairy cattle, swine and beef cattle in addition to crop farming. Gilbert had many hobbies and was a member of Aircraft Owners and Pilots Association, Experimental Aircraft Association, Model A Restorers Club, Lionel Collectors Club of American and the Eaton Rapids Area Historical Society.
He is survived by his aunt, Zoe McKessy of Jackson, cousins, Gerri (John) Anderson of Chelsea, Nancy Cummings of Clio, and Jelanie Bush of Newago. In addition, he is remembered by a wonderful group of friends and neighbors who were extremely helpful and supportive to him in his later years and especially during his recent illnesses. The family expresses deep gratitude to the medical staff at Ingham Medical Hospital in Lansing, McLaren Hospice Services and to all his loyal friends and neighbors for their expression of support and sympathy.
A funeral service will be held on Tuesday, August 17, 2010 at 2:00 p.m. at the Skinner Funeral Home in Eaton Rapids. Family will receive friends at the funeral home on Tuesday from 11:00 a.m. until service time at 2:00 p.m. In lieu of flowers please make a donation to your charity of choice in Mr. McKessy’s name.
Maynard W. McKessy
Maynard W. McKessy passed away on Thursday, February 18, 2001 at the age of 89. Maynard was born May 15, 1920 in Onondaga, Michigan to John and Myrtle (Steele) McKessy. He lived in the Eaton Rapids area his entire life. While in school Maynard was a member of the Civilian Conservation Core. He enlisted in the U.S. Navy where he served two years during the end of WWII. Maynard’s hobbies included wood working, mushrooming, and playing golf. He is preceded in death by his parents.
Maynard leaves behind his wife of 69 years Sylvia (Higgins) McKessy, children: Barry (Beverly) McKessy, Phillip (Kay) McKessy, grandchildren; Eric (Erica) McKessy, Scott (Sherri) McKessy, Craig (Amber) McKessy, Kerry (Christian) Wiser, 7 great grandchildren, and several nieces and nephews.
A memorial visitation will be held on Friday, February 26, 2010 from 6-8 p.m. at the Skinner Funeral Home in Eaton Rapids. In lieu of flowers, please make a donation to the charity of your choice.
