Rachel L. Smith
Rachel L. Smith, 51, of Eaton Rapids, died Sunday, May 23, 2010. She was born November 2, 1958 in Lansing, Mich. the daughter of Freeman Leo and Janice (Roberts) Green.
She is survived by her sister, Raeann Rockwell, brother, Josh Smith and father, Freeman Leo Smith. Funeral services were held Tuesday, May 25, 2010 at Pray Funeral Home with Reverend Becky Heibert officiating.
Nancy A. Strong
Nancy Ann (Thompson) Strong, 54, of Charlotte died Saturday, October 9, 2010 after an extended illness. Nancy was born Oct. 4, 1956 in Eaton Rapids, the daughter of Leslie and June (Jardot) Thompson and had been a lifelong Eaton County resident. She was a 1974 graduate of Maple Valley High School and loved working in her yard and garden.
Surviving are: her daughter, Jennifer (Blake) Upright of Vermontville; three grandchildren, Hannah, Lauren and Grace Upright; brother, Brad Thompson of Lansing; sisters, Carol Baker of Tennessee and Kellie (Kenneth) Criscoe of Troy, NC; brother-in-law, Derek (Ann) Strong of DeWitt and several nieces and nephews.
She was preceded in death by her parents, her loving husband of 30 years, Steven C. Strong on June 26, 2010 and her brother, Greg Thompson recently.
Funeral services were held Thursday, Oct. 14, 2010 at the Burkhead-Green Funeral Home in Charlotte with Greg Rinehart officiating. IN lieu of flowers, memorial donations may go to the Hospice of one’s choice or the Humane Society.
Robert E. Stukey
Robert Elton Stukey, 75, of Charlotte, died Sunday, June 20, 2010. He was born in Calhoun County, Mich., the son of Simeon and Almeda (Sebastian) Stukey. Robert was a retired mechanic for the National Guard. He enjoyed fishing playing card, model airplanes, racing go-carts and watching baseball.
He is survived by his wife, Marie; son, Gerald (Becky) Binning Jr. of Woodriver, Ill.; daughter, Debbie (James) Zimmerman of Charlotte, Vicky Binning of Atlanta, Mich.; nine grandchildren; nine great grandchildren; sister, Magdalina (Elwood) Martin of Bedord, Ind. and Helen (Max) Dowker of Charlotte, and nieces and nephews.
He was preceded in death by his parents, Simeon and Almeda; first wife, Pat; sister, Arlene Alldafer and brother, Simeon “Bud” Stukey.
Funeral services were held Friday, June 25, 2010 at Pray Funeral Home in Charlotte with Rich Mitterling officiating. Interment was at Maple Hill Cemetery in Charlotte.
If desired, memorial contributions may be made to American Heart Association and American Cancer Society.
Paul A. Stults
Paul Arthur Stults, age 90 of Weslaco, Texas, formerly of Charlotte, passed away November 15, 2010 at Knapp Memorial Hospital in Weslaco. Paul was born in Calhoun County, Mich. on May 29, 1920, the oldest son of Orma and Hilda Stults. He graduated from Vermontville High School and served in the U.S. Army, including Central Europe, from 10-24-44 to 4-24-46. He was proficient during his lifetime as a plasterer, construction worker, small equipment operator, and press operator. He also taught small engine repair for Adult Education. He was a Special Deputy for Eaton County Sheriff’s Department for about four years before becoming a full time Deputy for Eaton county from 1-1-51 to 4-20-59, being appointed Under Sheriff from 1-1-57 to 4-20-59.
He was a sergeant for the Charlotte, Michigan City Police from 1964 to 1969 and a dispatcher with the city police from 1972 to 1980. He retired in 1980.
He and his wife, Mavis, became Winter Texans in 1986 settling in Weslaco. He was active in the many winter activities, becoming very proficient in shuffleboard, they became permanent Texas residents in 2005.
He leaves to mourn his loss: his wife of 50 years, Mavis; six children: Gary(Yvonne) Stults, Kenneth (Diane) Stults, Joan (David) Harris, Robert Stults, all of Charlotte, Jean (Paul) Dodds of Florida and Eileen (Troy) Ten Eyck of Nashville, Mich.; step-children; Chaplain (Col.) Craig (Jean) Wiley of Georgia, Paula (Steve) Heilman and Mark Wiley of Charlotte; brother, Charles (June) Stults of Charlotte; 16 grandchildren; three step-grandchildren; numerous great grandchildren and nieces and nephews.
A memorial visitation will be held from 2 to 5 p.m. Dec. 4 at the Burkhead-Green Funeral Home in Charlotte.
Sylvia Ann Sutton
Sylvia Ann Sutton of Eaton Rapids, age 72, passed away in Lansing, December 20, 2010. She was born in Potsdam, NY July 29, 1938, the daughter of Hugh and Madeleine (Gallet) Raymo. Sylvia ran an accounting office since 1983. She was a charter member of the Women of the Moose in Arizona City, AZ, where she enjoyed her family and winters.
Sylvia is survived by her son, Mark R. (Cathy) Kirkey; brother, Maurice (Loretta) Raymo; sister, Ruth (Gary) Benware; stepchildren, Reverend Marcia Sutton, Harry (Judith) Sutton; Beatrice (Les) McMann, Sibyl Sutton, Marvin Sutton Jr.; many wonderful nieces, nephews; several loving grandchildren and many sweet great-great grandchildren. She was preceded in death by her husband, Marvin M. Sutton Sr. in 2005; sister, Rita Adams in 1985; father in 1994 and her mother in 2002.
In lieu of flowers or sympathy cards, please send donations to the St. Jude’s Children’s Research Hospital, 262 Danny Thomas Place, Memphis, TN 38105. As per Sylvia’s request, there will be no services. Arrangements were entrusted to the Shelly-Odell Funeral Home in Eaton Rap[ids.
Gertrude Elnora Swan
Gertrude Elnora Swan, age 100, passed away in Dimondale, September 23, 2010. She was born in Brookfield Township April 10, 2010, the daughter of William and Mable (Highland) Morey.
Gertrude lived at Kiwanis Manor for 20 years before moving to Dimondale. She loved to bake and to be in the country. Gertrude was blessed to have her kids and other family members take her for a ride every week.
She is survived by her daughters, Betty (Lyle) Murphy of Arizona, Bonnie (Jim) Criddle of Hastings; son, Paul (Dorothy) Swan of Eaton Rapids, James (Martha) Swan of Dimondale; 16 grandchildren; 24 great grandchildren and several great-great grandchildren. Gertrude was preceded in death by her husband, Ernest in 1975; daughter, Mable Lockhart in 1977; granddaughter, Bonnie Sue Lockhart; sisters, Grace Smock, Ruth Olin; brothers, Harold Morey, Warren Morey, William Morey.
Memorial services will be 11 a.m. Monday, September 27 at the Shelly-Odell Funeral Home, 518 S. Main St. Eaton Rapids, MI 48827, with Rev. Irene Vittoz officiating. Visitation will be one hour prior to the service.

Betty Ann Beatty Sylvia
Betty Ann Beatty Sylvia, longtime resident of Sarasota, Florida, passed away July 11, 2010 at the age of 100.
Betty, often referred to as “Grandma Florida”, was born October 9, 2909 in Clyde, Ohio and spent most of her adult life in South Lansing while working as a Dietician at sparrow Hospital. Upon her retirement she moved to the farm on Guinea Road, now known as Lake Interstate near Dimondale, until she and her husband, Hughie, retired and moved to Florida where she lived for 38 years.
Betty was a member of VFW Sarasota Sunshine Post 3233 Ladies Auxiliary, MOCA (Military Order of Cooties Auxiliary) and most recently Manatee 17 MOCA. She held many officer positions in the organizations, loved to go to the District Meetings and Grand Convention. She was awarded the “Earl Roberts” award for volunteering over and beyond for the Sunshine Post as well as many other awards for her contributions.
“Grandma Florida: will be remembered for her love of cooking and great foods, devotion to her family, honesty and giving spirit. She shared many “life stories” that taught us history, integrity and love. These stories as well as so many memories, will be with us forever.
Betty was preceded in death by her first husband, Hughie Beatty; second husband, John “Jack” Sylvia; son, Robert Beatty Sr.;’ grandsons, Jeffrey Beatty and Thomas Beatty; great grandson, Matthew David Beatty; great-great granddaughter, Harley Katherine Beatty; many special family members and dear friends. Betty is survived by her son, Kenneth Beatty Sr.; daughter-in-law, Mary Beatty; grandchildren, Donald (Theresa) Beatty, Robert (Carla) Beatty; Kenneth (Valerie) Beatty, Henry Beatty, Roger (Karen) Beatty, Barbara Riskey, Melissia (Robert) Holder; 18 great grandchildren; 19 great-great grandchildren; many extended family and wonderful friends.
A private burial was held July 20 in Sarasota, Florida. A celebration of her life will be held in Lansing at a later date. Richard George Tate, Jr.
Richard George Tate, Jr., age 75, Michigan Army National Guard retired, died Saturday, Aug. 21, 2010 at the Hospice House of Mid-Michigan in Lansing.
Mr. Tate was born July 1, 1935 in Detroit, MI, the son of Richard George and Helen E. (McMann) Tate. He attended elementary and high school in Dearborn, MI and had attended Michigan State University. He retired from the Michigan Army National Guard with over 40 years of service. He was a member of the American Legion in Indiana and was a Masonic Lodge member.
Surviving are: his loving wife, Ireta Mohre Tate; sons, Richard (Angie) Tate III and James (Lorrie) Tate; daughters, Cherie (Mohre) Oxender and Renea Mohre; 7 grandchildren, Sara Michael, Curtis, Ryan, Jessica, Christopher and Megan Tate; great grandchild, Ayden Decess; brother, Michael Tate and care provider and family friend, Deanna K. Baker.
Funeral services will be held at 11:00 p.m. Wednesday, Aug. 25, 2010 at the Burkhead-Green Funeral Home, Charlotte with the Michigan Army National Guard Chaplain officiating. Interment with full Military Honors provided by the Mich. Army National guard will be in the Fort Custer National Cemetery, Augusta, Michigan. Visitation will be held from 2-4 and 6-8 p.m. both Monday and Tuesday at the Funeral Home. Memorial contributions may go to the Army Emergency Relief Fund.
Donald Von Taylor
Donald Von Taylor, 84, of East Lansing, formerly of Mason, met his savior on Feb. 8, 2010, surrounded by his loving wife and family. He was born April 11, 1925.
Don was in the U.S. Army Air Force during WWII and discharged in November of 1945.
He worked 30 years at Unified Industries in Howell.
He was preceded in death by his parents, Evelyn and Leon Taylor; brother, Mahlon Taylor; and sister, Evelyn Dow. Surviving are his wife of 65 years, Rose; his three good kids, Ronald (Becky) Taylor, Donald V. Taylor, Jr. and JoVon (Doug) Halstead; nine grandchildren; 20 great grandchildren and three great-great grandchildren; sister, Betty Jachalke; sister-in-law, Eleanor Taylor.
He attended Okemos Baptist Church and House of Prayer. Memorial services will be held Saturday, February 13, 11 a.m. at House of Prayer, 9940 Old M-78, Haslett.
There will be no visitation. In lieu of flowers, please send donations to Great Lakes Home Health and Hospice.
