Philip S. Smith
Philip S. Smith, of Mendon left us on December 3, 2010, he was 54. Phil has joined his dad to be with our heavenly Father. He was the kindest man you could ever have known. He loved to fish and go canoeing and all things outdoors.
He is survived by his daughter, Samantha and Heidi; his mother, Carol Smith of Kalamazoo; siblings, Wendy Smith of West Jordan, Utah, Robert (Linda) Smith of Ypsilanti, Christopher Smith of Belgrad, Maine, and Timothy (Diane) Smith of Olivet. Uncle Phil will be greatly missed by his many nieces and nephews and many of his cousins.
There will be a memorial gathering at the home of Timothy Smith in Olivet, on December 11, 2010 from 3 to 5 p.m.
Arrangements were made by the Langeland Family Funeral Homes, Memorial Chapel, 622 S. Burdick St., Kalamazoo.
Robert A. Smith
Robert A. Smith passed away Sunday, January 17, 2010 at the age of 56. He was born February 15, 1953 in Lansing, MI, the son of Harry and Rose Smith. He served in the Marines and was active in Boy Scouts. He was a retired drywaller around the Lansing area.
He is survived by one son, James of Eaton Rapids; 3 daughters, Dawn (Dudell) Witt of Florida, Kathy (Shane) Rice of Peru, South America and Becky (Bernie) Meissner of Lansing; 7 granddaughters, Ashley, Leah, Rebekah, Rachel, Moriah, Charity and Christian; 2 grandson, Micah and Caleb; 2 brothers, Larry of Merritt, MI and Richard (Judy) of Eaton Rapids, MI. He was preceded in death by his parents, Rose and Harry; 1 brother, Harrison; 1 sister, Shirley.
A memorial service will be held at 11:00 a.m. Thursday, January 28, 2010 at the Parker Memorial Baptist Church in Lansing, MI with Pastor Don Green officiating.
Robert E. Smith
Robert E. Smith, 89, of Higgins Lake, died Wednesday, June 30, 2010. He was born September 1, 1920 in Barry County, the son of Jacob and Maybell Smith. He retired from the Christman Company as a Teamster with Local #581 in 1984. He was a lifetime member and past Commander of Maple City VFW Post #2406, American Legion Post #42, Eagles Aerie #3552 all of Charlotte, Cooties Put Tent Capital City #5 of Lansing, Amvets Post #13 of Higgins Lake and Moose Lodge #1162 of Grayling.
He is survived by his daughters, Donnie (Dan) Wood of Eaton Rapids and Linda (Dave) Bettys of Grand Ledge; six grandchildren, Danette Lee Parish, Darcie Cochran, Dawn Wood, Dana (Toby) Harrison, Kimberly (Tom) Sanders and Debbie (John) Woodworth; 17 great grandchildren, Britnee Redfield, Nicholas Harrison, Chaz Baughan, Morgan Cochran, Taylor Cochran, Katie Parish, Sara Baughan, Tony Parish, Kristy Parish, Cory Harrison, Summer Cochran, April Harrison, Danny Parish, Jessica Sanders, Jacob Sanders, Amanda Woodworth and Joshua Woodworth; wife, Nellie M. Smith; brother, Ron Smith. He was preceded in death by his first wife, Batty J. Smith; parents; brothers, Raymond Smith, Richard Smith and Glenwood Smith; grandson, Kinny, Jr.
A memorial service was held Friday, July 16, 2010 at the Charlotte VFW Post #2406 with Reverend Charles Jenson officiating. Interment was at Maple Hill Cemetery in Charlotte. Arrangements were made by Pray Funeral Home in Charlotte.
Daniel Smrchek
Daniel Smrchek, age 88, died June 1, 2010. Survived by son, David (Carol) Smrchek of Rogers City; daughter, Janeann (John Dennis) Snider of Loma Linda, CA; 4 grandchildren; 1 great grandson; sister, Lillian Howe of Charlotte.

James Sourwine
James Sourwine, 81, of Bellevue, died Thursday, April 8, 2010. Mr. Sourwine was born May 22, 1928 in Lansing, the son of Charles and Athena (Beal) Sourwine.
James loved to bowl, fish, do crafts, and play jokes.
He was preceded in death by his father, Charles; step-father and mother, Harry C. and Athena James. He is survived by his sister, Jean Goodwin of Lansing; brother, Richard Sourwine; niece, Carol (James) Rossow; nephew, Garry Goodwin; great niece, Amy; and great nephews, Andrew and Daniel.
The family gives thanks to Wilson Homes Inc., and their caregivers who loved and cared for James. Funeral services were held Tuesday, April 13, 2010 at Pray Funeral Home in Charlotte, with Rich Mitterling officiating. Interment was in Deepdale Memorial Gardens in Lansing. If desired, memorial contributions may be made to the Special Olympics.
Lila M. Southern
Lila Marguerite Southern, 93, of Charlotte, passed away peacefully on December 8, 2010 at the Country Living assisted home in Olivet, after a short illness. All the family would like to thank owners Sandy and Tim McCarn of Country Livin for all the great care they have given to Gramma. Lila was born December 1, 1917 in Charlotte, to Emmon and Bertha Buffenbarger. Lila just celebrated her 93rd birthday on Dec. 1, 2010, surrounded by all her family and she was so happy. Lila enjoyed all the times spent with her family and especially loved all her grandchildren and great grandchildren.
Gramma loved all children, no matter whose child it was. In Lila’s working years she retired from General Aluminum Products in Charlotte and had worked several years at the Charlotte Chair Company, and Magnesium Plant in Nashville. She married Samuel Southern and they were married to one another for 67 years, until Sam’s passing on Nov. 24, 2005. They were each other’s soul mates.
Lila was also preceded in death by her daughter and son-in-law, Sharon and Verl Varner; brother, Robert Buffenbarger; sister, Berniece Gilbert; sister-in-law, June Buffenbarger and an infant grandchild.
She is survived by son, Phillip (Sandy) Southern of Charlotte; brother, Budd (Grace Goode) Buffenbarger of Sagola, Mich.; sister-in-law, Elaine Buffenbarger of Kalkaska, Mich.; grandchildren, Lori (Raymond) Aseltine, Brian (Jamie) Southern, Ricky (Becky) Southern all of Charlotte and Susie (Tim) Olmstead of Elgin, Ill.; great grandchildren, Shaunie Aseltine, Brock Southern, Haley and Justin Southern (Melissa Summer, Amy Olmstead and Sarah Olmstead and several nieces and nephews.
As per requested by Lila, there will be no funeral services, only graveside services for the family, at Maple Hill Cemetery.
In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions can be made to the Oaklawn Hospice or to the charity of your choice in remembrance of Lila. Arrangements were made by Burkhead-Green Funeral Home of Charlotte.
Ruth A. Stambaugh
Ruth A. Stambaugh (Hetchler), of Sunfield, passed away Wednesday, Feb. 24, 2010 in Hastings, at the age of 91. Ruth was the daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Henry Nickols of Bath. Ruth and two older sisters and an older brother were in the Bath School explosion of 1927.
One sister did not survive. She was preceded in death by her parents, six brothers and five sisters.
Also preceding Ruth in death were her husband of 33 years, Harry G. Hetchler; an infant daughter, her husband of 24 years, Ron Stambaugh; and daughters-in-law, Sonie Hetchler, Ruth Hetchler and Marilyn Hetchler.
Surviving are her children, Douglas (Nina) Hetchler of LaGrange, Ind., Jerry (Mary) Hetchler of Omega, Ga., Harry Hetchler of Woodbury, Mich., Tom Hetchler of Lansing and Dee Curtis of Gering, Neb.; 13 grandchildren, 23 great grandchildren, five great-great grandchildren, and several nieces and nephews.
Funeral services were held Monday, March 1 at the Shepherd of the Hills Lutheran Church in Lansing with Pastor Norman Burger Jr. officiating. A graveside service was also held Monday, March 1 at Pleasant Hill Cemetery in Bath.
In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to the church, or a favorite charity in Ruth’s name. The family is being served by Rosier Funeral Home, Sunfield.
Bob E. Starkweather, Sr.
Bob E. Starkweather, Sr. born June 29, 1929 in Oneida Township to Pearl and Georgia (Goodrich Starkweather, died peacefully on September 10,2010 at Hospice House of Mid-Michigan with his family at his side. At an early age, he worked for Pryor Gravel and Eaton County Road Commission. He also served in the National Guard in Charlotte. On September 3, 1949, he married Alida Van Dorpe. They settled on a farm where he also hauled milk. In 1953 he hired into the Charlotte Police Department where he retired as Lieutenant. In 1972, they, along with youngest daughter, Wendy Sue, moved to Cheyenne, Wyoming where they made their home for many years. During his time in Cheyenne he was terminal manger of Ruan Transport and leased trucks to that company until his retirement in 1989. In 1989 they returned to charlotte where his passion became delivering fire truck chassis for Spartan Motors. He did this until his 80th birthday. Bob was a life member of the Eaton Area Senior Center, a member of the Moose Lodge in Cheyenne for 33 years and a volunteer for Meals on Wheels for many years. He will be remembered as a kind and caring man.
Surviving are his wife of 61 years, Alida, three children, Bob, Jr. (Sally) Starkweather, Sue Ann Hayward and Wendy Sue (Wayne) Carpenter, five grandchildren, Bill (Mandy) Sleight, Jennifer (Dan) Sleight Dowling, Heather (Josh) Starkweather Wooden, Ryan (Katie) Starkweather, and Casey Carpenter; five great grandchildren and several nieces and nephews.
He is preceded in death, by his parents, Pearl and Georgia Starkweather, sisters, Leone Rochester and Hilda Patterson, brothers, Junior, Enos and Theo, daughter-in-law, Barbara Jean Starkweather and son-in-law, Edward Hayward.
Funeral services were held at Pray Funeral Home on Monday, September 13, 2010 with Reverend Charles Jensen officiating. Burial was at Maple Hill Cemetery in Charlotte.
Richard C. Stegenga
Richard C. Stegenga, 89, of Charlotte, died Tuesday, June 1, 2010. Funeral services were held Thursday, June 3, 2010 at St. Mary Catholic Church in Charlotte. Arrangements were made by Pray Funeral Home in Charlotte.
Rosie Faye Stewart
Rosie Faye Stewart of Eaton Rapids, went peacefully to be with our Lord on October 22, 2010, at the age of 84. She was one of two children born to Thurman and Mary Collins in Gleason, Tennessee. She is predeceased by husband, Herschel O. “Red” Stewart, special grandson, 1st Lt. Justin Smith killed in action in Iraq. She was a devoted mother, sister and aunt. She enjoyed gardening, cooking, sewing and her home on the river.
She is survived by two daughters; Judith Smith of Lansing and Peggy Sue Stewart of California, 2 grandchildren, 6 great grandchildren, sister, Bobbie Sue Luken of Lansing, numerous nieces and nephews.
Funeral services will be Wednesday October 27, 1:00 p.m. at the Skinner Funeral Home in Eaton Rapids with the Rev. Daniel Hofmann, officiating. Visitation 1 hour prior to service time at the funeral home. Interment will follow at Rosehill Cemetery in Eaton Raids.
