Lillian T. Schroeder
Lillian T. (Hamm) Schroeder, 92, of Cadillac, formerly of Charlotte, passed away August 2, 2010, at Curry House in Cadillac. Lillian, a 1937 graduate of Grand Haven High School and a 1941 graduate of Michigan state College, was married in 1941 to Richard, who was an Agriculture Specialist for the U.S. Government. Lillian began her career as a home-economics teacher in Eaton Rapids, and when married, followed with the family through Michigan and on foreign assignments to Pakistan and Ghana. Upon retirement, they moved back to the home in which Richard was born at the Maple Hurst Farm on Wheaton Road near Charlotte where she volunteered over 1,000 hours at Hayes Green beach Hospital. They later moved to Heather Hills Retirement Center in grand Rap[ids in 200-6, and after Richard’s death in 2008 to Cadillac to be near her daughter. She was known as a gracious hostess wherever they lived, always willing to share a smile, even as she declined these last couple of years.
She is survived by children, Chris (Carolyn) Schroeder of Grand Rapids, Mich., RoxAnne (Lee) Evison of Cadillac, Steven (Connie) Schroeder of State College, Penn., and Alan Schroeder (Lucinda Brown) of Alexandria, Va.; brother-in-law, Walter Schroeder of San Luis Obispo, Calif.; sister-in-law, Cecelia Clack of Owosso; nine grandchildren, 12 great grandchildren and many nieces and nephews.
Funeral services were held Friday, August 6,2 010 at Gresham United Methodist Church with Reverend Kathy Smith officiating.
If desired, memorial contributions may be made to the American Red Cross or Mercy Hospice of Cadillac. Arrangements were made by Pray Funeral Home in Charlotte.
Dorwin E. Schultz
Dorwin “Dade” E. Schultz, 75, of Charlotte, died Friday, July 2, 2010. He was born July 26, 1934 in Charlotte, the son of Arthur and Elaine (DePue) Schultz.
He is survived by his wife, Coreen, and their children: Kevin (Drenda) Schultz of Shattuck, Okla., Kristie (Dan) O’Donnell of Keswick, Va., Karen (Gary) Wilkes of Eaton Rapids, Robert (Lisa) Power of Largo, Fla.; 17 grandchildren, Lance A. Schultz, Natasha A. Burns, Amber M. Hayes, Kati J. Forman, Landon J. O’Donnell, Tara M. O’Donnell, B.J. Pitylak, Kelsi Pitylak, Jordan Power, Jared Power, Joshua Power, Stephanie, Sarah, Susan, Katy and Stan; 13 great grandchildren; siblings, Arthur D. “:Sam” Schultz, Donald D. Schultz, Doreen F. “Susie” Schultz, Dee F. Schultz, Doris M. Schultz and Darrell M. “Joe” Schultz.
He was preceded in death by his brother, Douglas L. Schultz on October 24, 2002 and his son, Kary J. Schultz on December 24, 1979.
Dade was president of the Bi-Centennial Wagon Train Club for 18 years and continued doing covered wagon tours and activities in this area for which he was locally famous.
Funeral services were held Wednesday, July 7, 2010 at Pray Funeral Home with Denise Droscha officiating. Interment was in Gresham Cemetery.
If desired, memorial contributions may be made to the family. Arrangements were made by Pray Funeral Home in Charlotte.
D. Clarke Scott
D. Clarke Scott, 52, of Charlotte, died Friday, April 16, 2010. Funeral services were held Thursday, April 22, 2010 at Pray Funeral Home in Charlotte.
Jack A. Seger
Jack A. Seger, age 79 of Eaton Rapids died Wednesday, December 1, 2010 at Sparrow Hospital in Lansing. Born December 6, 1930 in Springport the son of Adrian and Belle (Hoag) Seger. Jack was a Springport High School graduate, class of 1948. He spent most of his life farming and later had worked for Felpausch Food Stores and for CBT (Corporate Bank Transport) in Lansing. He was a member of the Eaton Rapids Wesleyan Church. Jack was an avid bowler and bowled on several leagues in Eaton Rapids, Jackson and Albion. Jack enjoyed his annual Walleye fishing trips to Canada and would relive his trips the rest of the year. He was preceded in death by his first wife Donna in 1990; a daughter Karen; sister, Dorothy Betz and brother, Don Seger.
He is survived by his wife of 19 years, Ann; 3 children, Susann (Rusty) Weatherby, Kenneth Seger and Randy (Sherry) Seger; step-son, Daniel Reed and friend Marla Anderson; 4 grandchildren and 1 great grandchild; brother, Jay Seger; sisters, Jean (Ron) Keeler and Carolyn (Jerome) Rahrig; and many nieces and nephews.
Funeral services were Monday, December 6, 2010 at 11:00 a.m. from the Eaton Rapids Wesleyan Church with Pastor David Kingsbury, officiating. Burial will follow in the Rosehill Cemetery in Eaton Rapids. Family received friends at the church on Sunday, December 5th form 2-4 and 6-8 p.m. Memorial contributions may be made to the Eaton Rapids Wesleyan Church in memory of Jack Seger.
Ava L. Sellen
Ava Lee Sellen, 68, of Nashville, died Wednesday, November 3, 2010. She was born December 2, 1941 the daughter of Marion and Geraldine (Densmore) Hyatt. Ava was employed by Owens Illinois until retiring in 2003. She enjoyed playing cards, country music and cooking. She kept in contact with her fellow workers by continuing to attend the monthly birthdays at O.I. Mrs. Sellen loved her family and was known as a mom who would do whatever was needed to help her children.
She is survived by her daughter, Robin Sellen of Bellevue; sons, Timothy Sellen of Nashville; Wade Sellen of Nashville and Colan Sellen of Nashville; sister, Beverly Haskins of Nashville; brother, Chuck Hyatt of Battle creek and sister, Loretta (Mike) McClelland of Florida.
She was preceded in death by her husband, Ronald in 2002.
Funeral services will be 1 p.m. Monday, November 8, 2010 at Pray Funeral Home with Reverend Charles Jenson officiating. Interment will be in Hillside Cemetery, Kalamo Township, Mich. Visitation will be Sunday, November 7, 2010 from 2 to 4 p.m. and 6 to 8 p.m. at Pray Funeral Home.
Elizabeth B. Shaffer
Elizabeth B. Shaffer, formerly of Olivet, died peacefully at the Country Acres Adult Care Home in Eaton Rapids on Jan. 31, 2010 at the age of 96. She was born on Oct. 17, 1913 to John and Margaret (Jewell) Hamilton in Battle Creek.
She graduated from Bellevue High School in 1932 and attended County Normal to become a teacher. Elizabeth married Christian Vahs and was early widowed. She and her second husband, John H. Shaffer, spent nearly 50 years together in Olivet. Elizabeth taught school, was a secretary for the Bellevue school district, and later worked in the Business Office at Olivet College. She was an active member of the Olivet Congregational Church and the Cora Sexton Circle.
Elizabeth is survived by her three daughters, Ann (Peter) Wade, Jean (William) Blair and Julia Shaffer; four grandchildren, Peter (Tami) Wade, Susan Wade, Amy Blair (Kirk Pruett), and Jeremy Blair and three great grandchildren, Matthew, Sarah and Stephanie Wade.
A memorial service was held at the Olivet Congregational Church on Saturday, Feb. 6, 2010 at 2 p.m.

Wilbur Mitchell Sharpe
Wilbur Mitchell Sharpe of Onondaga, MI, passed away Thursday, July 22, 2010 at the Jackson County Medical Care in Jackson, MI. Wilbur was born October 16, 1931 in Mason, MI to the late John William and Myrtie Mae (Diesler) Sharope. He was a graduate of Eaton Rapuids High School class of 1951. Wilbur was a veteran of the U.S. Navy serving during the Korean War on the USS Mindoro from 1951-1955. He married Mary Keniston May 1, 1953 in Boston, MA at the Old North Church. Wilbur retired form GM in 1994 after 15 years of service. He enjoyed camping, hunting, fishing and calling all of his grandchildren “Duker”.
Wilbur is survived byhis wife, Mary Sharope; 5 children, Deborah (Roger) Knickerbocker, Shirley (Mark) Newton, Richard Sharpe, Nancy (Tom) Delpriore and Robert Sharpe; 10 grandchildren, Autumn Pond, Zachary Pond, Nicki Taylor, Taryn Barlow, Travis Newton, Amanda Prichett, Travis Sharpe, Stacie Taylor, Jacob Munro and Gracelynn Sharpe; 8 great grandchildren; brother, John William Sharpe III. He was preceded in death by his parents; daughter, wanda Trimble; 3 grandchildren, Christopher Pond, Gary Wandel and Jeremy Knickerbocker; brother, Bob Sharpe; 2 sisters, Mable Barnes and Lila Gavin.
Cremation has taken place and a memorial visitation was held July 26, 2010 at the Shelly-Odell Funreral Home, 518 S. Main, Eaton Rapids, MI 48827. There will be no formal service as per Wilbur’s wishes. Contributions may be made to the donor’s choice of charity.
Harriette Ilene Shaw
Harriette Ilene Shaw of Eaton Rapids, MI, stepped into the arms of Jesus on Thursday evening, December 9, 2010. Harriette was born July 10, 1921 to Elmer and Bessie Gumpp. She was preceded in death by first husband, Lawrence Sabin; second husband, Richard Shaw; infant daughter, Linda Sabin and son, Ronald Sabin.
She is survived by daughters, Karen (Fred) Duffrin of Eaton Rapids, Cindy (James) Griffin of New Hampshire; sons, Gary (Chris) Sabin of Nashville, James (Deanna) Shaw of Perry and Berney (Margaret) Shaw of Charlotte, Pastor Robert (Dawn) Shaw of Hesse; 20 grandchildren; 26 great grandchildren; 9 great-great grandchildren and 2 great-great-great grandchildren.
Memorial services will be Tuesday, December 21, 2010 at 11:00 a.m. from the Skinner Funeral Home in Eaton Rapids with the Rev. Scott Boles, officiating. Burial was in Eastlawn Memory Gardens Cemetery in Okemos. For those desiring memorial gifts may be made to the In House Hospice at 3400 Telegraph Rd. Nora Shegitz
Nora (Zeremsky) Shegitz, 90, of Charlotte, formerly of Camden and Coldwater, Mich., died Wednesday, April 21, 2010. She was born Jan. 8, 1920 in Akron, Ohio, to Gabriel and Julia (Janavovity) Zeremsky, and married Joseph Louis Shegitz on Oct. 22, 1938 in Detroit.
Nora was preceded in death by her husband, Joseph; a daughter, Yvonne; sons, Ronald and Steve; granddaughters, Peggy and Janet and grandson, David.
She is survived by sons, Joseph (Bea), Jr. of Swartz Creek, Mich., and Norman (Barb) of Lubbock, Texas; daughters, Barbara (Bob) Higuera of Aurora, Colo., and Pamela (Art) Brown of Brighton; daughters-in-law, Dorothy Shegitz of Stryker, Ohio and Elaine Shegitz of Charlotte; 13 grandchildren and many great grandchildren.
Cremation has taken place. A private family memorial service will be held.

Surviving are her husband of 38 years, Terry Lee Gibson, Sr.; three children, Pamela Marie (Darrin Harmon) Gibson of Eaton Rapids, Terry Lee (Tera) Gibson, Jr. of Charlotte and Amanda Lynn Gibson of Charlotte; four grandchildren, D.J. Harmon, Terry Lee Gibson III, Anastasia Grace Harmon and Lillie Marlene Gibson and one brother, David (Monique) Baczewski of Arizona.
Funeral services were held Monday, April 19, at the Burkhead-Green Funeral Home, Charlotte with Rev. Richard H. Wilford of First Baptist Church officiating. Interment was in the West Carmel Cemetery.

Genevieve E. Rutherford
Genevieve E. Rutherford, 84, of Charlotte, died Wednesday, January 20, 2010 at Sparrow Hospital in Lansing. She was born May 29, 1925 in Allyson Corners, Mo. the daughter of Harry Paul and Adah Maude (Allyson) Lambley. She had recently moved back to Charlotte after having lived in Fayetteville, Ark. for 25 years. While in Charlotte she had been the owner/operator of Beauty By Burns and Merle Norman Cosmetics. She was a member of the Charlotte O.E.S. #218, the White Shrine and the Daughters of The Nile. She had been a member of the Charlotte Woman’s Club and the First Congregational Church and it’s Mary Martha Circle.
Surviving are: her son, Gene (Bea) Burns of Charlotte; step son, Gary (Beverly) Rutherford of Dimondale; step daughters, Sandra Rutherford of Pigeon, Mich. and Jane (Michael) Kopp of Mt. Clemons, Mich.; numerous grandchildren and great grandchildren; brother, Carl (Carol) Taylor of Charlotte; sister, Elizabeth (Gene) Zieglowsky of Washington, Iowa and brother-in-law, Jack (Marilyn) Rutherford of Pigeon. She was preceded in death by husband, William Tom Rutherford on May 29, 2009; by her daughter, Joy Burns Ward; brother, Charles Taylor and sister-in-law, Helen Laney.
A funeral service was held Saturday, Jan. 23, 2010 at the Burkhead-Green Funeral Home in Charlotte with Julie Zieglowsky officiating. Graveside services and burial will be held later in the Baptist Ford Cemetery in Greenland, Ark. Arrangements in Arkansas by the Moore’s Funeral Chapel of Fayetteville, Ark. The family has suggested memorial contributions to the Shriner’s Hospital for Children in Chicago, Ill.
