Beulah I. Costlow
Beulah Isabelle Costlow, 80, of Charlotte, died, June 27, 2001.
Mrs. Costlow was born July 17, 1920 in Morgantown, W. Va., the daughter of Charles and Dora (DeWitt) Casteel. She retired from Sterling Faucet Company after 32 years of service.
She is survived by daughters, Jean LaBare of Charlotte, Joan (Tom) Holloway of Eutis, Fla., Judith Gifford of Tampa, Fla.; eight grandchildren and 11 great-grandchildren; and sister, Freda O’Haver of Stevensville.
She was preceded in death by brother Everett, and sisters Agnes Curtis and Deloris Jean Shannon.
Funeral services were held July 2 at Jenkins Funeral Home, Morgantown, W.Va., with Pastor Alfred Reed officiating. Interment was at East Oak Grove Cemetery, Morgantown, W.Va.
Memorial contributions may be made to the Lawrence Avenue Methodist Church or Alzheimer’s Association; envelopes are available at the funeral home. Arrangements were by Pray Funeral Home, Inc.
Kathleen E. Couke
Kathleen Ella Couke, 85, of Charlotte, passed away Oct. 28, 2001.
Mrs. Couke was born June 7, 1916 in Chester Township, Eaton County, the daughter of Dennis and Clinda (Lamie) McCormick. She attended Hubbard School, graduated from Charlotte High School, and from Western Michigan University in 1938, and did graduate work from the University of Michigan. She taught elementary grades in Jackson and Alma before retiring form Charlotte schools. In June 1940 she married Arthur Couke of Grand Blanc and Jackson, an experimental engineer who passed away in 1989. It was a great joy for Mrs. Couke to work with children in school and church. She received a state of Michigan license to organize and be a supervisor of a day care center in her church, where she also taught Sunday school for years. She had a talent for writing skits and plays to present to the public. During her lifetime, Mrs. Couke was a member of the First Congregational Church, Mary Martha Circle, Women’s Club, Care, Salvation Army Board, and Upsilon Chapter of the Delta Kappa Gamma Society. She was a golden Key member of the Hayes Green Beach Hospital and its auxiliary. She was also a member of teacher group[s, MARSP and treasurer of ECARSP for Eaton County. She was a community volunteer in other areas. She is survived by daughter, Amy Couke; and nieces, nephews and cousins. Funeral services were held Oct. 31 at Pray Funeral Home, Charlotte, with Rev. Rich Mitterling officiating. Interment was at Maple Hill Cemetery, Charlotte.

Carroll Wayne Courtright
Carroll Wayne Courtright, age 87 of Duck Lake, passed away on Saturday, June 23, 2001 at the Eaton Manor Nursing home were he had been a resident for one year. He was born January 31, 1914, in Clarence Township, Calhoun County, the son of Ray and Rena (Starks) Coutright. He operated the family centennial farm and worked in Albion factories. He was a groundskeeper at Duck Lake Golf and Country Club until his retirement. A life member of the Springport Masonic Lodge #284, and a member of the Brookfield/Eaton United Methodist Church. In his younger days, he was an avid motorcycle enthusiast, belonging to several motorcycle clubs. Preceding him in death were his parents; sister, Eva Mae Starks; granddaughter; great-granddaughter; and special niece.
Surviving are his wife of 65 years, Maxine (Reeve) Courtright; son, Kenneth (Judy) Courtright of Gwinn, MI; 2 daughters, Carole Lynn (Bob) Hovey of Eaton Rapids and Lorraine Courtright of Albion; 7 grandchildren and 2 step-grandsons; 11 great-grandchildren and 2 step-great-grandchildren and 3 special nieces and their families.
Funeral services will be Tuesday, June 26th at 11 a.m. from the Skinner Funeral Home in Eaton Rapids with Rev. Kevin Hale officiating. Burial will follow in the Clarence Center Cemetery at Duck Lake. Peggy J. Cowling
Peggy J. Cowling, 68, of Charlotte, formerly of Potterville, died Friday, July 27, 2001 at her residence.
Mrs. Cowling was born Feb. 16, 1933 in Eaton Rapids, the daughter of Harold “Skinny” and Marjorie (Powell) Field, and was a life-long resident of Eaton County, having lived most of her life in the Potterville area.
She is survived by five daughters, Sue (Mark) Norris of Potterville, Pauline Frost of Downey, Calif., Nancy (Kurt) Jones of Perrinton, Debbie Cowling of Charlotte and Mary (Dwight) Miller of Olivet; two sons, Charles (Darlene) Cowling Jr. and Wayne (Pat) Galloway, both of Midland; seven grandchildren, Matthew, Abby, Jason, Brian, Melissa, Brien and Shannon; three great-grandchildren, Emily, Ethan, and Gregory; and her mother, Marjorie Miller of Charlotte.
She was preceded in death by her husband, Charles Cowling Sr. on March 2, 1989.
Funeral services were held July 31 at Burkhead-Green Funeral Chapel, Charlotte, with Elder Richard Garn officiating. Interment was at Benton Township Cemetery, Potterville.
Memorial contributions may be made to the Potterville-Benton Township Fire Department EMS or the Hayes Green Beach Hospital EMS. Arrangements were by Burkhead-Green Funeral Home, Charlotte.
Claude Crandall
Claude Crandall, age 79 of Charlotte, died Friday, May 25, 2001 after a lengthy illness. Claude was born July 6, 1921 in Eaton County the son of Claud D. and Nora (Gunnell) Crandall and was a lifelong Eaton County resident. He was a decorated U.S. Army veteran of World War II having participated in the Invasion of Normandy. He had been employed in Building Construction and by Charlotte Public Schools from where he retired in 1979. He was a member of First Lutheran Church, the Greenwalt-Flaherty Post #42 American Legion and former member of the Eaton Rapids V.F.W. He was married to Bess Tran on November 30, 1945.
Surviving are his wife Bess; 3 daughters, Diane (Ken) Stults and Carol (Ken) Hamilton both of Charlotte and Sharon (Allan) Dimitroff of Lansing; 1 son, Bruce (Diane) Crandall of Broad Run, VA; nine grandchildren; eight great-grandchildren; brother, Douglas (Lee) Crandall of Wheatridge, CO and sister-in-law, April Crandall of Denver, CO. He was preceded in death by brothers, Hazen, Donald and Joseph and sisters, Thelma, Helen, Bessie, Dorothy and Madeline.
Cremation has taken place. Memorial services were held Monday, May 28, 2001 at the First Lutheran Church, Charlotte, with Rev. Timothy Olson officiating. Memorial contributions are suggested to the First Lutheran Church or the National Kidney Foundation. Arrangements were by Burkhead-Green Funeral Home, Charlotte.
Leroy E. Craun
Leroy E. Craun, “The Hardware Man”, age 91 of Eaton Rapids, died Saturday, July 7, 2001 in Eaton Rapids. Leroy was born August 8, 1909 in Eaton County the son of Ira Leroy and Temperence Florinda (Gillett) Craun. Mr. Craun worked at Horner Woolen Mills during his High School years and at the A&P Store where he “delivered” groceries among other responsibilities. Leroy retired as Manager of Peterson’s Hardware with over 50 years of service and went on to pursue his love of woodworking and cabinet making. He was a member of the Eaton Rapids First United Methodist Church and an active member of the Eaton Rapids Senior Center. Leroy was preceded in death by his first wife Dorothy in 1992.
Surviving are his wife, Alberta (Dodge); 3 stepsons, John (Evelyn) McClung of Mason, Bill (Beverly) Dodge of Lansing, Bob (Jan) Dodge of Holt; stepdaughter, Shirlyn (Dick) Russell of Lansing; several step-grand and great-grandchildren and many nieces and nephews.
Funeral services will be held Tuesday, July 10, 2001, 2:00 p.m. at the Shelly-Odell Funeral Home, Eaton Rapids, with Pastor Tom Evans officiating. Interment will follow at Rosehill Cemetery, Eaton Rapids. The family will receive friends one prior to the service. Those desiring may make contributions to either the Eaton Rapids First United Methodist Church or the Senior Center in memory of Leroy Craun.
Carleton Creyts
Carleton “Jake” Creyts, 89, of Charlotte, passed away Feb. 21, 2001 in Lansing.
Mr. Creyts was born Nov. 11, 1911 in Watertown Twp., Clinton Co., the son of Daniel and Ruth (Critchett) Creyts. He was a graduate of Lansing Central High School, class of 1932; a former dairy farmer and draft horse breeder; life member of the Belgian Draft Horse Corp. of America; member of the Michigan Draft Horse Breeder’s Association; former director of the Eaton County Federal Land Bank; former board of the Grand Ledge Produce Company; former member of the Eaton County 4-H Fair Board, and was the horse superintendent of that fair for many years. West Meadow Farms Belgian horses were exhibited at many Michigan county fairs, including the Ingham County Fair for 37 consecutive years. He was also a member of the Eaton County Farm Bureau.
Survivors include his wife of 65 years, Dorothy (Fritz) Creyts; one son, Daniel (Jean) Creyts of Charlotte; one daughter, Carlene (Donald) Davis of Lansing; five grandchildren, Ruth Creyts, John Creyts, Douglas Davis, Laura (Rodney) Pillars, and Mary Davis; one great-grandson, Austin Pillars; and one sister-in-law, Gladys Fritz of Grand Ledge.
Funeral services were held Feb. 24 at Peters & Murray Funeral Home, Grand Ledge. Interment was at Hillside Cemetery, Delta Mills.
Memorial contributions may be made to Sparrow Hospice or to the MSU Draft Horse Endowment Fund.
Max L. Crim
Max L. Crim, 63, of Bellevue, died Dec. 6, 2001 at Hayes Green Beach Hospital in Charlotte.
Mr. Crim was born Dec. 21, 1937, the son of George and Muriel (Roberts) Crim in Chicago Heights, Ill. He graduated from Bloom Township High School in Illinois, and worked for Terminex and Interbake Foods, retiring in 2000. He married Marjorie Paul on Nov. 5, 1960; she survives. Mr. Crim was a member of Emmanuel First Lutheran Church in Lansing. He was a great sports fan and was considered a sports trivia buff.
He is survived by his wife, Marjorie; son, David Crim of Lansing; daughters, Karen Lundquist and Joyce Mann of Battle Creek, Evle Hart and Margie Crim of Bellevue; 14 grandchildren and one great-granddaughter; brother, Dick Crim of Crete, Ill.; and sister, Jean Johnson of Lowell, Ind.
He was preceded in death by a sister, Beverly Teske; and brothers, George and Charles Crim, and Jack Crim in infancy.
Services were held Dec. 10 at Shaw Funeral home, Lehman Chapel, Bellevue, with Pastors Daniel Buske and Paul Lindloff officiating. Interment was at Riverside Cemetery, Bellevue.
