James W. Robins
84, of Charlotte, Michigan, died Monday, August 27, 2001. Mr. Robins was born April 28, 1917, Chester Township, Michigan, the son of James S. and Alfaretta H. (Smith) Robins. He was a Sergeant of Battery B 232nd Field Artillery Battalion in the Army during WWII. He worked as a Tool and Die maker for Aluminum Extrusion after 27 years and raised rabbits to sell and for research. He was also a member of the IOOF for 64 years, VFW Post #2406 and American Legion Post #42. He is survived by brothers Royal (Jennie) Robins of Harrison, Amos (Bernadine) Robins of Charlotte, sisters Edna McDermid and Esther Wyble of Charlotte, 2 grandsons James and Matthew Robins, step-granddaughter Melissa (James) Falk and many nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by his wife Frances in 1982, son Lawrence Robins April 29, 2001 and sister Mable in 1975. Funeral services will be 2:00 p.m. Thursday, August 30, 2001 at Pray Funeral Home, Charlotte with Bob Wyant of the Internatonal Order of the Odd Fellows and Pastor Pat Sterling officiating. Interment will be in Maple Hill Cemetery in Charlotte. Visitation will be 2 - 4 and 7 - 9 pm Wednesday at Pray Funeral Home. Memorial contributions may be made to the Odd Fellows or the Rebekahs.
Robert Edward Spotts
77 of Charlotte, Michigan, formerly of Montague, died Friday, August 31, 2001 at the St. Lawrence Dimondale Center after a lengthy illness. Mr. Spotts was born August 10, 1924 in Charlotte, the son of Ray and Gladys (Casler) Spotts. He was the owner and operator of Insty Prints in Muskegon until he retired in 1994. He was a member of St. John's Episcopal Church in Charlotte, the Brookfield Masonic Lodge, Maple City VFW Post 2406 and the American Legion Post #42 in Charlotte. Mr. Spotts served with the U.S. Marine Corps during World War II and was awarded the Purple Heart. His survivors include sons Randy of Charlotte, Brad (Carey) of Florida, daughter Cindy (Steve) Lowing of Muskegon, five grandchildren, one great granddaughter, and sister, Velma (Harold) Dingman of Bellevue. His wife Carol (Stratton) preceded him in death in August 30, 1995. Graveside services will be held 1:00 PM Wednesday at Maple Hill Cemetery in Charlotte, with Rev. Dr. Carol Spangenberg officiating. There will be no visitation. If desired, memorial contributions may be made to St. John's Episcopal Church.
Hildred Rosalie Bowser
85 of Charlotte, Michigan, died Saturday, September 8, 2001. Mrs. Bowser was born July 15, 1916 in Vermontville, Michigan, the daughter of Oscar and Ida Bell (Wells) Stevens. She was an upholsterer with the Charlotte Chair Company and a member of the West Carmel Congregational Church. She enjoyed her family and their activities, crossword puzzles, and gardening. She liked the senior citizen dinners in Charlotte and Olivet and especially loved her trips up north to the shack in Onaway. She is survived by daughters Sandra (John) Rollins of Marshall, Cheryl (Verlin) Franks of Olivet, son Ronald (Virginia) Bowser of Olivet, 8 grandchildren, 12 great grandchildren, sisters Eloise Thompson of Charlotte, Maxine (Zack) Beard of Battle Creek brother Merlin (Martha) Stevens of Sun City, Arizona, and sister-in-law Donis Barnett of Charlotte. She was preceded in death by her husband Kenneth and sisters Marguerite Bunce and Doris Ranshaw, brothers Murray and Hubert Stevens. Funeral services will be 11:00 AM Tuesday, September 11 at Pray Funeral Home in Charlotte with Rev. Darwin Kuhl officiating. Interment will be in Maple Hill Cemetery in Charlotte. Visitation will be Monday 2-4 PM and 7-9PM at the funeral home. Donald Guy Carter
86, of Charlotte, Michigan, died Tuesday, September 11, 2001. Mr. Carter was born March 17, 1915, in Eaton County, Michigan, the son of Guy A. and Pearl E. (Doane) Carter. He bottled milk for 25 years. He was a member of the First Baptist Church and Men's Prayer and Breakfast Group. He was known around Charlotte as the downtown window cleaner. He is survived by son Donald Lee Carter of Plainwell, daughters Rosealie (Larry) Demarest of Union City, Joan Lawrence of Texas, 6 grandchildren, 2 great grandchildren, brothers Raymond (Harriet) Carter, Lyle (Judy) Carter, sisters Marie Nunhimer, Maxine (Clarence) Carnes, Mable (Clarreton) Cortright, Florence (Lyle) Jeffery, and several nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by his wife Leola (Hutson) in 1998, daughter Louise Masters, granddaughter Tonya, and brothers Merwine and Ivery. Funeral services will be 11:00 a.m. Friday, September 14, 2001 at First Baptist Church, Charlotte with Rev. Richard Wilford officiating. Interment will be in Maple Hill Cemetery, Charlotte. Visitation will be 2 - 4 and 7 - 9 p.m. Thursday, September 13, 2001 at Pray Funeral Home, Charlotte. If desired, memorial contributions may be made First Baptist Church.
Vaughn Wells
68 of Charlotte, Michigan, died September 14, 2001 at Mid Michigan Hospice House in Lansing. Mr. Wells was born March 16, 1933 in Eaton County, Michigan, the son of Stanley and Foy (Parshall) Wells. He is survived by his brother Kenneth (Marianna) Wells of Charlotte, sister Hilda Davis of Charlotte and several nieces and nephews. Graveside services will be held at 10:00 AM Wednesday, September 19 at Center Eaton Cemetery in Charlotte, with Pastor Elbert Householder officiating. 85, of Charlotte, Michigan, died Sunday, September 16, 2001. Mrs. Vitale was born August 16, 1916, in Charlotte, Michigan, the daughter of Jesse and Lillian (Howard) Woodman. She is survived by sons Robert Vitale of Lansing and Mark of Olivet, daughters Vicki (John) Bradford of Dimondale, Michigan and Linda (Dana) Momany of Tolleson, Arizona, step-son Guy Vitale of Albion, step-daughter Virginia Whittum of Albion, 10 grandchildren, 6 great grandchildren, brother Clyde Woodman of Mulliken, sister Sadie Lynd-Hager of Grand Ledge and many nieces and nephews. She was preceded in death by her husband Sam Vitale in 1983, step-daughter Ana Willoughby and step-son Ralph Vitale. Funeral services will be 1:00 p.m. Thursday, September 20, 2001 at Pray Funeral Home, Charlotte with Rev. Dr. Carol R. Spangenberg officiating. Interment will be in Maple Hill Cemetery in Charlotte. Gale C. Good
85 of Charlotte, Michigan, died September 16, 2001. He was born April 18, 1916 in Isabella County, Michigan, the son of Clarence A. and Julia May (Ingersoll) Good. He had immense compassion for his family and took care of his wife for the last five years. He was a very honest man with a fantastic sense of humor, loved fishing on Lacy Lake and playing shuffleboard and his love of travel took him to every state except Hawaii and Alaska. Mr. Good was a retired truck driver for the Dana Corporation. He is survived by his wife of 55 years, Inez (Breidinger), sons Gayland D. Good of Charlotte, Edward Lee, and Ivan L. Good of Lansing, Loren A. Evans of Muncie, Indiana; daughters Evelyn (Harry) Carpenter of Charlotte, Lydia (James) Baker of Minneapolis, Minnesota; brothers James Good of Zephyr Hills, Florida, Paul Good of Charlotte, 34 grandchildren, 65 great grandchildren, and several great great grandchildren. He was preceded in death by 2 sons, Clifford W. Good and Ardnold Good, and by brother Ira Good. Funeral services will be 2:00 PM Wednesday, September 19 at Pray Funeral Home in Charlotte, with Chuck Jenson officiating. Interment will be in Gresham Cemetery. Visitation will be Tuesday 2-4 PM and 7-9 PM at the funeral home.
Michelle Hughson
35 of Jackson, Michigan, died September 17, 2001 in Jackson. Ms. Hughson was born June 19, 1966 in Lansing, Michigan, the daughter of James Michael and Sandra (Fetterman) Skrip. She was a Radiologist Technician for 12 years at Hayes Green Beach Hospital in Charlotte. She loved making oil candles. She is survived by sons Lance and Luke of Mason, mother Sandra (Jan) Skrip of Apache Junction, Arizona, father James (Jean) Michael of Evart, Michigan, brother Russ Michael of Charlotte, half brothers Jon (Dawn) Skrip and Steve Skrip of Charlotte. Memorial services will be 10:00 AM Thursday, September 20 at Pray Funeral Home with Pastor Bert Walker officiating. There will be no visitation. Interment will be in Maple Hill Cemetery in Charlotte. Marvin Davis
61 of Mulliken, Michigan died Tuesday, September 18, 2001. Mr. Davis was born May 11, 1940, in Charlotte, Michigan, the son of Warren and Esther (McCormick) Davis. He was a machine repairman for BOC in Lansing, an avid deer and game hunter and a solid supporter of the NRA. He is survived by his wife Mary (Brandt), daughter Kelly (Jack) Spinner of Grand Ledge, son Jeffrey Davis of Elkhart, Indiana, 3 grandchildren, Shane, Jacqualyn and Shanandua Rust. Funeral services will be held 11:00 AM Friday, September 21 at Pray Funeral Home in Charlotte, with Rev. Arthur Salisbury officiating. Visitation will be Thursday 7-9 PM at the funeral home.
Elena S. Rodriguez
87, of Charlotte, Michigan, died Friday, September 21, 2001. Mrs. Rodriguez was born November 13, 1913, in Pescadia, Mexico, the daughter of Estanislado and Mari Elena (Cirio) Saenz. She was a member of the St. Mary Catholic Church. She is survived by daughters Amelia (Alden) McBride of St. Johns, Michigan, Juanita (Ernest) Means of Charlotte, son Jose "Joe" (Sandra) Rodriguez, 8 grandchildren and 13 great grandchildren. She was preceded in death by her husband Juan, daughter Angelita and 3 brothers. Funeral services will be 10:00 a.m. Monday, September 24, 2001 at St. Mary Catholic Church, Charlotte with Father Bennett Constantine officiating. Interment will be in Maple Hill Cemetery, Charlotte. Irel R. Berryhill
64 of Charlotte, died Thursday September 21, 2001. Mr. Berryhill was born May 25, 1937 in Detroit Michigan. Irel enjoyed bowling, hunting and fishing and classic cars. He was a member of South Baptist Church of Lansing. He is survived by his wife Jean, son John (Seung) Berryhill of Lapeer, daughters Johana (David) Breaun of East Pointe, Sarah (Robert) Clair of Sterling Heights, several grandchildren, brother Richard Berryhill and sister-in-law Sally Leavy of Peoria, Illinois. Mr Berryhill was preceded in death by a son Eric in 1984. Funeral Services will be 3:00 PM Monday at the Pray Funeral Home in Charlotte, with Pastor David Brooks officiating. Interment will be in Maple Hill Cemetery, Charlotte. The family will receive visitors 2-4 and 7-9 PM Sunday at the funeral home. Duane Coon
age 57 of Charlotte died Saturday September 22, 2001. Mr. Coon was born August 4, 1944 in Lakeview, the son of Neil and Burnetta (Gill). Mr. Coon is survived by his wife Linda, Daughters Dani (Leon) McAdams of Dewitt, Jenny Coon of Charlotte; son Charles (Patti) Coon of Charlotte, Grandaughters Macy and Keeley Coon and his mother Burnetta Coon of Lake Odessa. He was predeceased by his father Neil and brother Beryl Coon, Duane was a driver for General Motors Company until his retirement in 1998. He enjoyed many varied interests including drag racing, tractor pulls, and more recently computers and fishing. Funeral services will be Wednesday 10 AM at the Pray Funeral Home, with Rev. Jerry Slivensky officiating. The family will receive visitors Monday 7-9, and Tuesday 2-4 & 7-9 PM.
Lynn Alan ("Bugs") VanderMoere, Jr.
41, of Charlotte, Michigan, died Saturday, September 22, 2001. Mr. VanderMoere was born September 26, 1959, in Lansing, Michigan, the son of Lynn Alan VanderMoere, Sr. and Karen Hicks VanderMoere Glynn. He is survived by his wife Tracy and three children, Jeremiah, Nathanial, and Seth; his mother, Karen (Pat) Glynn; his father, Lynn (Mary Lee) VanderMoere; two brothers, Scott (Evita) VanderMoere, and Rich (Heather) VanderMoere; sister, Kristy (Shawn) Degner; Grandmother, Phyllis Hicks; several aunts, uncles, nieces, nephews and cousins; step brother, David Glynn; step sisters Kellie Glynn and Julie Harmon. He was a 1978 graduate of Charlotte High School and lived most of his life in Charlotte and Potterville. He is a retiree from General Motors. He will be greatly missed by all of his family and friends. Funeral services will be 1:00PM, Wednesday, September 26, 2001, at Pray Funeral Home, Charlotte, with Reverend Neal Hicks officiating. Alton R. Olmstead
90 of Charlotte, died Friday, October 5, 2001. Mr. Olmstead was born June 1, 1911 in Bellevue, Michigan, the son of Leo and Effie (Dibble) Olmstead. He grew up in the Assyria area and lived with his aunt and uncle, Helen and Frank Rodeman. He worked at Wilcox Gay and was a Pinkerton security guard at Owen Illinois, a member of the Crossroads Church of the United Brethren for over 50 years, and he especially enjoyed hunting with the rest of the family. He is survived by son Kenneth (Marie) Olmstead of Burbank, California, daughters Mary (Stephen) Crandell-Hundt of Charlotte, Evelyn Chapman of East Leroy, Suzanne (William) Brenton of Charlotte, grandchildren Daniel (Tammy) Crandell, Randy (Sherrie) Crandell, Angie (Rick) Tate, all of Charlotte, Debbie (Max) Collin of Grand Rapids, Cherie (Ken) Betke of Battle Creek, Marvin Chapman of Battle Creek, Denise (John) Chapman of Owosso, Michelle (Steve) Lance of Palmdale, California, Annette (Alan) Baxter of Oregon, Tammy (Matt) McMearty of Texas, Melissa (John) Mater of Nashville, Bill (Syna) Brenton of New York City, Melinda Brenton of Ann Arbor, sister Opal Olmstead of Lansing, half sister Betty Lou Hutchings of Bolivar, Missouri, 25 great grandchildren and 3 great great grandchildren. He was preceded in death by his wife of 70 years, Ruth (Turner) in June, 2000, 2 sons Cecil and John Olmstead, sons-in-law Darrell Crandell and Lawrence Chapman, and sisters Lucille Spaeth and Margaret Dibble. Funeral services will be 10:00 AM Tuesday, October 9 at the Crossroads Church of the United Brethren in Charlotte, with Pastor Michael Arnold officiating.
