Pitts, Kenneth Russell
Lansing, MI
Age 85, husband, brother, father, grandfather, lover-of-cats, died peacefully on Monday, March 4, 2002 at Sparrow Hospital. He was born on July 1, 1916 in Barryton, MI. Mr. Pitts was the sixth of seven children of Clara and Caleb Pitts. He moved to Lansing in 1927 where he graduated from Lansing Central High School. Early on, Mr. Pitts had a passion for the newspaper business. He wrote a column in the South Lansing Independent, critiqued movies and became a headline writer for the Lansing State Journal. While the smell of printer's ink and the sound of the presses fanned his spirit, the dollar-a-day salary depleted his billfold. In 1937 he applied for and accepted a position as Timekeeper at the Lansing Drop Forge Company. In the next 44 years he rose to Paymaster, Personnel Manager, and finally to Production Manager. In the war years, Mr. Pitt's love of writing took the form of a monthly company newspaper called the Anvil Chorus that was distributed in the shop and mailed to men who had been drafted or enlisted. News from home and from the front helped everyone feel they were contributing to the war effort. A copy of the Anvil Chorus is currently on display at the Michigan Historical Museum in Lansing. Mr. Pitts spent his retirement years in Venice, FL and Richland Center, WI. He recently returned to the Lansing area to be near his lifelong friends and family. Mr. Pitts is preceded in death by his wife, Audrey Rose Pitts and his son, Paul Allyn Pitts.
