Age 93 passed away Aug. 8, 2001. She was born in New York, has lived in the Lansing area for many years, coming here from Detroit. She was a member of St. Thomas Aquinas Catholic Church; member of the Catholic Business Women's Assoc.; Capital Area Garden Club; and volunteered at St. Lawrence and Sparrow Hospitals. She was a wonderful entertainer and very much loved her family and friends, especially the children in the neighborhood. She was associated with Michigan Farm Bureau for many years as an executive secretary to past president Dan Reed. Surviving are: Sister, Veronica Flanagan of W. Virginia; Nieces, Margaret Arabia of W. Virginia and Kathleen Rollins of Davisburg, MI; Nephew, Donald Flanagan of St. Paul, MN. Funeral services were conducted by the Rev. Fr. Domonic Tirley at 10:00 a.m. Monday, Aug. 13, 2001 in the Estes-Leadley Greater Lansing, 325 W. Washtenaw St.; Lansing, with private interment in the Highland Park Cemetery, Ionia, MI. The family received friends at the funeral home from 6-8 p.m. Sunday, where a Scripture Service was held at 7:30 p.m. Memorial contributions may be made to Hospice of Lansing.
Woodman, Bertha M.
Lansing, MI
Age 93, passed away on Sunday, March 3, 2002. She was born in Laingsburg, MI on April 15, 1909 and has lived in the Lansing area most of her life. She was a member of St. Gerard Catholic Church; was a graduate of Lansing Central High School; and was an active member of the Waverly 39er's. She was a former member of the Rebekah Lodge and was a volunteer at Ingham Regional Medical Center. She was preceded in death by her husband, Bemsley Woodman, in 1977. Surviving are: daughter, Connie (William) Gaugier of Lansing; 6 grandchildren, JoEllen (Dennis) Healy of Ludington, James (Deb) Gaugier of Portage, Kaye (Rinn) Evans of Sweetzer, IN, Steven (Tina) Gaugier, Christy (Mike) Koren and Amanda Gaugier, all of Lansing; and 13 great grandchildren. The funeral mass was celebrated at 11:00 a.m. on Saturday, March 9, 2002 with Rev. Fr. Timothy MacDonald officiating at St. Gerard Catholic Church, 4437 W. Willow, with the Rite of Committal at Rose Cemetery, Bath Township. The family received friends at the Estes-Leadley Greater Lansing Chapel from 2-4 and 6-8 p.m., on Friday, March 8, 2002, where the Rosary was prayed at 7:30 p.m. Memorial contributions may be made to Sparrow Hospice, C/O the Sparrow Foundation.
Zimmerman, Marguerite Ella
DeWitt, MI
Age 95, passed away on Thursday, September 20, 2001. She was born in Calhoun County, Michigan on May 22, 1906, the daughter of Obediah Cowles (Lansing's oldest native at the time of his death in the mid 1950's) and Lula May (Conn) Wheeler. Mrs. Zimmerman was preceded in death by: her husband, Harold in 1981; sister, Clara Tessman; brothers, Cowles, Russell and Irving Wheeler. She is survived by: sister, Esther Randall of Grand Rapids; nephews, Richard, Russell and Edwin Wagner, David Randall, James, Paul, Robert, Lawrence and Charles Wheeler; and nieces, Jean and Ella May Brown. Marguerite was a well-respected schoolteacher, beginning her teaching career in Mecosta County for 2 years and then in Ingham County for the next 38 years at Island, Driver, Maple Hill and Everett Schools. She received her Bachelor of Science Degree from Western Michigan University in 1950 and was a member of the Lansing, State, and National Education Association, the PTA, Conservation Club, Spartan Women's Club, Alpha Beta Epsilon Sorority and the National Science Teachers Association. Her hobbies included lapidary, stained glass, needlework and furniture reupholstery. Marguerite's recipe for long life has always been "Doing the best you can with what you have, having regard for someone else and help them if you can." Funeral services were held at 11:30 a.m., Tuesday, September 25, 2001 at the Estes-Leadley Greater Lansing Chapel, with the Rev. Dr. James E. Robinson officiating. Interment followed in Deepdale Memorial Gardens. The family received friends from 2-4 and 6-8 p.m., Monday, September 24, 2001 at the funeral home. Memorial contributions may be made to the American Red Cross.
Popoff, George Andrew
Lansing, MI
We were graced with the presence of George Andrew Popoff for 19 years before his return to heaven on Monday, March 24, 2003. The son of Rebecca Popoff and grandson of Donald and Metta Popoff, George was born on November 16, 1983 in Lansing. George was a student who excelled in computer science. At the age of 18, he was among the youngest in Michigan to earn his certification as a Sysco Networking Professional. George also loved the martial arts, and by the guidance of his mentor, Mr. Williams of Mid-Michigan Academy of Martial Arts, proudly achieved his black-belt. George spoke often of his hope to establish a school to continue his work with other young martial arts students. George especially loved spending time with his grandparents, Don and Metta. They were together for the final week of his life in Gulf Shores, Alabama, where he swam in the ocean and practiced his martial arts on the sandy beaches. He was a loving, caring, confident young man and a wonderful son. He leaves to mourn: his mother, Rebecca; grandparents, Donald and Metta Popoff; great grandfather, Joseph O’Dell; aunts and uncles, Thomas Popoff, Joseph (Kathy) Popoff, Andrew Popoff, Timothy Popoff, Christopher Popoff, Donna McCarthy, Amy (Jon) Gunger and Paula (Kurt) Steffen; cousins, Kimberly Popoff, Timothy (Dashika) McCarthy, Jr., Ryan McCarthy, Donald (Lisa) Popoff, II, Benjamin Popoff, Marie McCarthy, Emily Popoff, Nicholas Popoff, Danielle Popoff, Ben Wyatt, Higgins Steffen, Haley Steffen, and Kyle Gunger and his girlfriend, Ashleigh Ramey; and many other friends. Our collective family and friends will gather to celebrate George’s life on Saturday, March 29, 2003 at 10:00 a.m. at the Estes-Leadley Greater Lansing Chapel with Gale Amon officiating. Interment will follow in Hillside Cemetery, near his beloved uncle, Timothy McCarthy, Sr. All are welcome to attend a visitation from 5:00 p.m. to 8:00 p.m. on Friday at the funeral home. In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to the Capital Area Humane Society.
Wortman, Marjorie E.

Marjorie E. Wortman went to be with her Lord on August 3, 2002 at the age of 86. She was born to Clarence E. and Bertha (Reynolds) Warner on April 16, 1916 in Lansing. Marjorie was a former resident of Eaton Rapids and Mason, was owner/ operator of Marjorie’s Beauty Shop in both cities, and was a long time member of Pennway Church of God. She and husband, Leonard, retired in 1977 and moved to Tucson, AZ returning to Michigan in 1992. She leaves behind her loving husband of forty one years, Leonard, daughters, B. Marlene Miller of Lansing, Roberta (Bobby) Fisher and Doris (Harold) Roose all of Mason, stepson Roger (Carolyn) Wortman of Prudenville, stepdaughter J. Carron Maunus of Lansing, thirteen grandchildren and twenty three great grandchildren. Funeral services will be 1:30 P.M. Wednesday, August 7, 2002 at the Estes-Leadley Holt/ Delhi Chapel with the Rev. Earl L. VanSipe, Rev. Roger D. Hamilton, and Rev. Rebecca New - Edson of Pennway Church of God officiating. Interment will follow at East Lawn Memory Gardens in Okemos. The family will receive family and friends at the Estes-Leadley Holt/Delhi Chapel 2-4 & 6-8 P.M. Tuesday. In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to Pennway Church of God in Lansing or the Hospice of Lansing.
Mitchell, Andrea J. (Gieske)

Passed away on Friday, September 12, 2003, at the age of 47. She was preceded in death by her father, Richard Gieske. Surviving are: husband, Tom Mitchell; son, Anthony, age 12; mother, Jeanne Gieske; 5 siblings, Martha (Bob) Smoots, Dick Gieske, Laurie Gieske, Marcy (Pat) West and Darcy Gieske; nieces, Rachel Powers and Taylor West; and nephews, Richie Gieske and Patrick West. She will always be remembered for her free and loving spirit, warm smile and strong character. According to her wishes, cremation has taken place. There will be no visitation. A memorial service will be held on Tuesday, September 16, 2003 at 4:00 p.m. at the Estes-Leadley Greater Lansing Chapel, 325 W. Washtenaw, Lansing, MI. Andrea will be forever in our hearts.
Marvin B. Friar
Lansing, Michigan
Born on October 5, 1914 in Randolph County, Arkansas, the son of George W. and Edna (French) Friar, passed away on March 10, 2005 at the age of 90. Marvin was a WWII veteran and he retired from the Coca Cola company. He is survived by: his wife of 68 years, Juanita (Graham); son, David (Charlene) Friar; son, Daniel Friar, who recently passed away, his wife, Linda Friar; grandchildren, Camilla (David) Herron, Mark (Coleen) Friar, Angela (Mike) Ponic, Amanda Friar, Theadore Friar and Matthew Friar; 13 great grandchildren; 2 great great grandchildren; and sister, Augusta McKrill. Funeral services will be held at 2:00 p.m. on Monday, March 14, 2005 at the Estes-Leadley Greater Lansing Chapel, with the Pastor Bob Nappier officiating. Interment will follow in Chapel Hill Memorial Gardens. The family will receive friends from 2-5 p.m. on Sunday at the funeral home. Memorial contributions may be made to the American Diabetes Association or to the American Red Cross in memory of Marvin B. Friar.
VanVoorhis, James Eugene "Gene"
Lansing, MI
Age 96, loving husband, father, grandfather, great grandfather and friend, went to be with the Lord on August 10, 2001. He was born on October 10, 1904, in VanWert, OH, and has lived in Lansing most of his life. Mr. VanVoorhis had been a member of Mayflower Congregational Church since 1933, their oldest member, and served on many church boards and committees, including the Board of Deacons and the stewardship committee. He was also the oldest retiree from the Lansing Board of Water and Light. He began employment with them on April 9, 1945 as a Waterworks Station Operator. He retired on May 1, 1973, after more than 28 years of loyal service. Mr. VanVoorhis also served as the Business Agent for the International Brotherhood of Electric Workers (IBEW) Local 352 during the early 1960's. He was a member of the Lansing Lodge #33, F. &A.M. in 19. He was preceded in death by his first wife, Agnes (Hertel) in 1984, and by his second wife, Gladys (Lake) in 1991. Surviving are: 2 daughters, Sheila and James Rynbrandt of Dimondale, and Sharon and Terry Graham of Haslett; 4 grandchildren, Matthew Rynbrandt, Abigail House, Ryan Graham and Michael Graham; and great grandchild, Tieson Graham. A funeral service was conducted by the Rev. Donald K. Dewey, at 2:30 p.m. Tuesday, August 14, 2001, at the Estes-Leadley Greater Lansing Chapel, with interment in Deepdale Memorial Gardens. The family received friends from 1:30 p.m. until service time. In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to Mayflower Congregational Church in memory of James Eugene VanVoorhis.
