Born in Lansing on September 16, 1923 passed away on Friday, January 17, 2003 at the age of 79. Russell was a member of Mayflower Congregational Church, a veteran of the U.S. Marines, a member of Morley S. Oates Post # 701, V.F.W. and a member of the Lansing Aerie #1039, F.O.E. Mr. Niklas was preceded in death by his parents, August and Amelia Niklas and one daughter, Jan Lynn Niklas. Survivors include his wife Winifred E., son, Bradley R. (Debbie) Niklas, daughters, Vickie Niklas and Betsy (Abel) Garza, all of Lansing, stepsons, Frederick (Susan) Giannaris of DeWitt, Thomas (Jean) Giannaris of Clarkston, and Dr. Robert (Jean) Giannaris of San Diego, CA. along with 15 grandchildren and 14 great grandchildren. Funeral services will be conducted by the Rev. David T. Bandfield at Noon on Monday, January 20, 2003 at the Estes-Leadley Greater Lansing Chapel. Entombment will follow at Deepdale Memorial Gardens. The family will receive friends at the funeral home on Sunday from 4-7 p.m. Those who wish may make memorial contributions, in lieu of flowers, to Mayflower Congregational Church.
Kowalk, L. Ann

Age 83, passed away Sept. 3, 2003. She retired from the Lansing School District in 1977. Following retirement she became an avid quilter, and marvelous seamstress becoming involved with several quilting groups in the Lansing area. Her talents will surely be missed. Ann also enjoyed square dancing. Surviving are her husband of 61 years, Clayton J.; Daughter, Karen (Terry) O’Dell; 2 Granddaughters, Tracy (Jason) Maddox and Amy (Derek) Johnson; 2 Great Granddaughters, Ashlyn and Brielle for whom she made quilts. A Memorial Service will be held at 10:00 a.m. Monday, Sept. 8, 2003 in the Estes-Leadley Greater Lansing Chapel, 325 W. Washtenaw St.; Lansing with The Rev. Terry Williamson of Christ United Church of DeWitt officiating. The family will receive friends at the funeral home from 2-5 p.m. Sunday. In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may made to the Capital Area Humane Society.
Margaret L. Ebersole

Margaret Leonore Goodell Ebersole, a good and gracious lady, passed away on January 3, 2005, at the age of 86 following a long illness. She was born on July 25, 1918 in Lansing, Michigan, the daughter of Ralph and Mabel Goodell. She was a graduate of Lansing Central High School and Michigan State College where she earned a Bachelor of Music Degree. In 1941 she married Vernon D. Ebersole and was devoted to him until his death in 1988. She taught private music lessons and served as accompanist for the Michigan State College Chorus, the Over Forte Choir, and, for 20 years, the Lansing Matinee Musicale Ensemble. Margaret retired from the Lansing School District after serving as the secretary at Wainwright and Pleasant View Elementary Schools. Margaret was a lifelong member of Central United Methodist Church, served in the Ruth Circle, and worked as a volunteer in the church office. She was also a member of Sigma Alpha Iota, a music sorority, Phi Kappa Phi honorary, Lansing Matinee Musicale, and the Greater Lansing Retired School Personnel. The major focus of her life was family, including her sisters, children, grandchildren, and great-grandchildren. She traveled extensively in the United States, Europe and Asia with her sisters and special friend, Ruth Epstein. Survivors include: sisters Mary Helton of Rye, NY and Muriel Benedict of San Pedro, CA; daughter Barbara Zachman (Lee) of Shelbyville, MI; sons, Robert Bruce (Diane) of Holt; Ralph (Pat) of Highland Park, IL; Richard (Ellen) of Traverse City; 8 grandchildren, Meg and Elizabeth Ebersole; Robert, David, and Caitlin Ebersole; Kevin (Donna) and Christopher Zachman, Karen (David) Prentice; great-grandchildren Audrey Zachman, Syerra and Austin Prentice. Religious services will be conducted at 12:00 p.m. on Wednesday, January 5, 2005 at Central United Methodist Church, corner of N. Capitol Ave. and W. Ottawa St., with the Rev. John Boley officiating. Internment will be in Deepdale Memorial Park. Visitation will be from 2-4 and 6-8 p.m. on Tuesday at the Estes-Leadley Greater Lansing Chapel and one hour prior to the service on Wednesday at the church. Margaret and Vern shared a commitment to the development and education of children. In honor of that commitment memorial contributions to support the Vernon D. Ebersole Environmental Education and Conference Center may be sent to the Ebersole Foundation, 3400 2nd Street, Wayland, MI 49348 and/or to the Ralph Goodell Memorial Library, at Central United Methodist Church, 215 N. Capitol Ave., Lansing, MI 48933 in memory of Margaret L. Ebersole.
Hammond, Douglas I.

Age 76, passed away Oct. 16, 2002. He was born in Battle Creek, MI on May 5, 1926. He was a Veteran of W. W. II, serving in the U.S. Army; a member of American Legion Post #379; a former DeWitt Township Trustee; former Board Member of the Lansing Area Safety Council; and a Past President of Lansing R.E.A.C.T. He was employed at Montgomery Wards for 30 years, retiring as Shipping and Receiving Manager in 1987. Surviving are: Wife of 52 years, Arlene; 2 Daughters, Vickie Lynn (Randy) Kindy of Haslett, Marianne (Chuck) Eallonardo of Lansing; 2 Sons, Greg (Roberta) Hammond of Haslett, Steven (Debbie) Hammond of Memphis, TN.; 13 Grandchildren. Funeral services will be held at 2:30 p.m. Friday, October 18, 2002 in the Estes-Leadley Greater Lansing Chapel, with The Rev. Dr. Cecil C. Wagstaff of St. Paul’s Episcopal Church officiating. Interment will follow in the Gunnisonville Cemetery. Military Honors will be provided by Edwin J. Leyanna Post #671. The family will receive friends at the funeral home from 2-4 and 6-8 p.m. Thursday. Memorial contributions may be made to the Leukemia Society of America.
Green, Emmett Duane

Age 78, passed away on Saturday, September 13, 2003. He was born April 19, 1925 in Lansing, MI. the son of Warren and Margaret (Kreig) Green. Mr. Green was a veteran of the U.S. Navy, serving during WWII. He was also a member of the First Presbyterian Church of Holt for more than 50 years, a lifelong member of the Mason Lodge #70, F. & A.M.. He had retired from General Motors in 1980 following 32 years of service. Surviving are: his wife Norma, whom he married in 1946 and enjoyed 57 years of marriage with; 2 daughters, JoAnn (Richard) Elden of Six Lakes, MI., Carol (Lex) Moyers of Highlands, TX., 1 son, Robert (Wendy) Green of Mason, MI.; 6 grandchildren, Jeanne, Trudy, Nikki, Jake, Amanda, and Cody; 5 great grandchildren, Justin, Jack, Madeline, Dawson, and Alexis along with many nieces, nephews other extended family members. Emmett was preceded in death by 3 brothers and 3 sisters. Private family services will be held, however, the family will be receiving friends at the Green residence, 2214 Park Lane in Holt, on Tuesday, September 16, 2003 after 3:00 p.m. Those who wish may make memorial contributions, in loving memory of Emmett, to the Sparrow Regional Cancer Center, P.O. Wright, Norma F.

Age 74, died at Hospice of Lansing Residence on May 27, 2002. She was born on December 13, 1927 in Lansing. Mrs. Wright is survived by: children, Ronald (Sandy) Potter of Holland, Mary Hannah-Calkins of Holt, Nina Stokes of Mt. Pleasant, Miko (Tanya) Wright of Lake, MI, and JoAnn (Mike) Bradly of Phoenix, AZ; 7 grandchildren; 21 great grandchildren; close friends, Edith Arnett and Verna Hardy. She was preceded in death by: her husband, Judson; son, Donald; and great grandson, Bailey. The family wishes to express a special thanks to Ingham Regional Medical Center and Hospice of Lansing Residence. A funeral service will be held at 4:00 p.m., Thursday, May 30, 2002 at the Estes-Leadley Holt/Delhi Chapel, with the Rev. Edgar Owens officiating. The family will receive friends from 3:00 p.m., until service time on Thursday. Memorial contributions may be made to Hospice of Lansing Residence, in memory of Norma Fay Wright.
Porter, Suzanne Elizabeth, nee Scott, Kirschbaum

Suzi died June 12, 2002 at 69 years in the Christian faith, after battling cancer for 23 years. A second reoccurrence and congestive heart failure finally took her home, in spite of the intervention of several wonderful doctors and nurses at Ingham Regional. Suzi was born 7-29-32 in St. Paul and first married there, and while raising her family, also lived in Salt Lake, Seattle, San Diego, and Malibu, before coming to Lansing. She graduated from the University of Minnesota as an X-Ray Technician, where she worked briefly. Her second career was as a Mother and homemaker. In Lansing, Suzi soon began working in real estate sales as a Broker with the Martin Co., later with Dunn & Fairmont, Suzi Porter Real Estate, and the Edward G. Hacker Co. She was proud as a woman to have chaired the Board of Realtors Building Committee, when the Realtors moved into the former Horsebrook School, as she oversaw the sale of the old property and purchase on a tax free exchange, remodeling, rezoning, financing, and leasing of the excess space. She later changed careers again and started Porter's Orchids, now in its 17th year in a small greenhouse with her husband Bill, moving it to a larger state of the art facility in 1997. Suzi was a certified Orchid Judge, participated in orchid shows throughout the mid-west, and gave numerous slide show talks to many Orchid Societies. Suzi was preceded in death by her parents, Raymond M. and Grayce Scott. She is survived by her devoted husband Bill; children Kristin A. Kirschbaum of Albuquerque, and Steven A. Kirschbaum (Cyndy); grandchildren Emily, Andrew, and Michael of Commerce, MI; brother Ray Scott of Colorado, and sister Rosie Scott of Arizona. According to her wishes, her remains have been cremated. A Christian memorial service will be held at 10:00 a.m. Tuesday, June 18, 2002 at Trinity Lutheran Church, 501 W. Saginaw with The Rev. Richard P. Laeder officiating. Interment will follow at Evergreen Cemetery. The family will receive friends at a memorial visitation from 2-4 and 6-8 p.m. Monday at the Estes-Leadley Greater Lansing Chapel. Memorial contributions may be made to the elevator fund of Trinity Lutheran Church, or to the charity of one's choice.

Age 81, beloved Mother, Grandmother, Great Grandmother, Wife and Sister passed away Sept. 3, 2001. She was born in Fairfield, MI Sept. 1, 1920 and has lived in Lansing for 76 years. We celebrate her 2 time cancer survivorship. She was a member of the Christ United Methodist Church, Miriam Circle, Woman's Auxiliary, and was the "Neighborhood Mom". Her love for music was eclipsed only by her love for her God and Savior, and for her family. Her exceptional spirit, courage and perseverance made her an inspiration to all who met and knew her. She was a shining light in this world, and will be greatly missed. Surviving are: 4 Daughters, Patricia Ann (Eric) Metzler of Columbus, OH, Margaret Ruth Trescott of Lansing, Vickie Zo (Gregory) Pence of Lisle, IL, Robin Frances (Edward) Messing of Sandusky, MI; 10 Grandchildren, Melanie Ruth (David) Seal, Dr. Michael Robert Fayze Jabara, Melissa Ann Jabara, Mr. Meredith Gene (Kelly) Metzler, Carl Robert Pence, Steven Robert Pence, Meri Lynn Messing, Heather Ruth Messing, Edward Vincent Messing, III, Robert Francis Messing; 2 Great Grandchildren, Tyler Trescott Seal and Abigail Elizabeth Seal; Brother, Preston Lloyd (Maxine) Schomp; Sister-in-law and Brother-in-law, Ruth and Lee Reasoner; Son-in-law, Fayze Jabara. She was preceded in death by her husband, Dr. Robert Francis Trescott in 1984; Eldest Daughter, Marilyn Irene Jabara in 1997; Brother, Lawrence Schomp in early childhood. Private religious services were conducted by The Rev. M. E. Walworth, Jr. of the Christ United Methodist Church. Interment followed in Deepdale Memorial Gardens. The family received friends at the Estes-Leadley Greater Lansing Chapel from 2-4 and 6-8 p.m. Thursday. Our family wishes to extend our deepest gratitude for the loving doctors and staff at Ingham Regional Medical Center, Greenlawn Campus who cared for our mom and our whole family during Mom's illness. In lieu of flowers, donations in Mom's honor will be greatly appreciated to the American Cancer Society.
