Lewis, Betty Bernice

Born September 15, 1918 to Fred J. and Hattie S. Heldmeyer, died Friday, April 26, 2002 at the age of 83. She lived most of her life in Lansing, spending a short time in Hastings, MI. Betty married Herbert E. Lewis on December 12, 1943, while he was still in the service. He preceded her in death in 1979 after 35 years of marriage. Also preceding her in death were her parents and one brother, Fred R. Heldmeyer. Betty is survived by: son, Stephen F. Lewis and wife, Patti, of South Rockwood, MI; daughter, Judy E. Van Aman and husband, Jeff, of Hastings, MI; grandchildren, Patrick Lewis and wife, Joanna, Penny Lewis, and Elizabeth Lonergan; step-granddaughter, Jennifer Casarez. There are also several nieces and nephews, and cousins along with special sister-in-law, Lucille Heldmeyer. Mrs. Lewis was a member of the First Presbyterian Church. Through the years she belonged to the Harriet Mifflin Society, American Association of University Women, Pioneer Civitan Club of Lansing, and the Spartan Alumnae Club. Betty attended Michigan State University and graduated from Central Michigan University and went on to teach elementary school in Ovid prior to her marriage. Funeral services were held at 10:00 a.m., Tuesday, April 30, 2002 at the Estes-Leadley Greater Lansing Chapel, with the Rev. Anthony A. Patrick of First Presbyterian Church officiating. Interment followed at Deepdale Memorial Park. The family received friends at the funeral home on Monday, April 28, 2002 from 6-8 p.m. Those who wish may make memorial contributions, in loving memory, of Betty B. Kohn, Anna
Lansing, MI
Age 87, passed away on December 31, 2003. She was born on March 31, 1916 in Irondale, Ohio, the daughter of William and Mary (Zsobracsek) Rohal. Anna was an avid bingo player and contributed time and handiwork, especially crochet, to the family business, Fired Earth Pottery Studio. She was preceded in death by her husband, William F. Kohn. Surviving are: daughter, Maryann (Dale) Jones; grandson, Ronald Jones; step-sisters, Frances Yeasley and Mary (Wyman) Howard; and sister-in-law, Elsie Hafner. Funeral services will be held at 10:00 a.m. on Monday, January 5, 2004 at the Estes-Leadley Greater Lansing Chapel, with Fr. John Fain of St. Gerard Catholic Church officiating. Interment will follow in Chapel Hill Memorial Gardens. The family will receive friends from 2-4 and 6-8 p.m. on Sunday at the funeral home. Memorial contributions may be made to Sparrow Hospice Services.
Belen, Robert P., Sr.
Lansing
Age 78, passed away on January 9, 2004. He was born on November 15, 1925 in Westphalia, MI, and has lived in Lansing most of his life. Mr. Belen had a very distinguished career as a police officer with the Lansing Police Department, serving the Lansing community for 31 years, retiring in 1979, when he began employment as a court officer with the 54th District Court under Judge Cherry and was a member of the Fraternal Order of Police. Surviving are: his wife of 42 ½ years, Gwendolyn; 2 daughters, Sandra Lee (Larry) Ruhf of Tucson, AZ and Risa Mae (Albert) Miller of Lansing; son, Robert M. (Dalyn) Belen of Lansing; 6 grandchildren; 5 great grandchildren and 2 sisters. He was preceded in death by 3 sisters, and 2 brothers. Memorial services will be held at 11:00 a.m. Saturday, January 17, 2004, at Trinity Evangelical Lutheran Church 501 W. Saginaw St., with The Rev. Richard P. Laeder officiating. In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to Trinity Evangelical Lutheran Church, or to the charity of one’s choice, in memory of Robert P. Belen, Sr. Arrangements by the Estes-Leadley Greater Lansing Chapel.
Fish, James C., Sr.

Age 86 passed away on Tuesday, January 18, 2005. He was born on March 28, 1918 in Avoca, Iowa to Amos and Bertha (Copeland) Fish. James had retired from the U.S. Navy and was a WW II Pearl Harbor survivor. He is survived by: his wife of 59 years, Ilah; sons, James (Judy) Fish, Jr. and Gary (Marilyn) Fish; 7 grandchildren; 14 great grandchildren and one sister, Zoe Kibby. James was preceded in death by: brother, Harry and 3 sisters, Mae, Maude and Belle. Funeral services will be held at 10:00 a.m. on Friday, January 21, 2005 at the Estes-Leadley Holt/Delhi Chapel with the Rev. Stephen Ezop, Chaplin of Heartland Hospice officiating. Interment will follow in Chapel Hill Memorial Gardens. The family will receive visitors from 6 to 8 p.m. on Thursday at the funeral home. Memorial contributions may be made to Heartland Hospice in memory of James.
Monkman, Elbert C. "Al"
East Lansing, MI
Age 91. Born on September 6, 1911 in Sault Ste. Marie Michigan, he became a resident of Lansing in 1947. He retired in 1974 from the Federal Aviation Agency as a Flight Service Specialist. He also served as an Air Traffic Control Specialist conducting pilot weather briefings and flight plans. Al was an avid amateur radio operator (W8TCY) for over 50 years. He became a silent key on Christmas Eve Morning, 2002. He was a member of the Quarter Century Wireless Association, the Central Michigan Amateur Radio Club as well as the Lansing Civil Defense Repeater Association. Elbert was preceded in death by his wife, Marjorie E. Monkman in 1996. Surviving are: a brother, Donald Parker of Scottville, MI; daughter, Sister Carol Monkman SSJ of Nazareth, MI; 3 sons, Elbert T. (Sara) Monkman of Reiserstown, MD, Gerald Monkman of Dunedin, FL, and John (Ruth) Monkman of DeWitt; 6 grandchildren; 1 great grandchild and many nephews and nieces. A memorial service will be announced at a later date. Memorial contributions may be made to the Burcham Hills Foundation. Arrangements by the Estes-Leadley Greater Lansing Chapel.
Adams, Eleanor Mae

Age 74, passed away on Wednesday, July 03, 2002. She was born on January 28, 1928 in Lansing, the daughter of Claudius M. and Myrtie E. (Hinkle) Smith. She retired from the State of Michigan where she was employed with the Department of Education and the Department of Military Affairs. She played and taught piano and organ and played for various churches since the age of 12. She was preceded in death by: sisters, Elizabeth Simmons and Isabelle Smith. She is survived by: her husband of 51 years, Nealie of Dimondale; daughter, Debra L. Ackley of Potterville; son, Corby N. (Tamera) Adams of Charlotte; grandchildren, Justin J. Ackley, April M. Adams and Tosha L. Parish; sister, Esther A. DeForest of Haslett; brother, Leon Smith of Traverse City; and many nieces and nephews. Funeral services were held at 2:00 p.m., on Saturday, July 6, 2002 at the Estes-Leadley Greater Lansing Chapel, with the Rev. Dr. Kenneth W. Bensen officiating. Interment followed in Deepdale Memorial Gardens. The family received friends 2 hours prior to the service at the funeral home on Saturday.
Barrera, Celia V.
Lansing, MI
Age 95, passed away on November 29, 2004. She was born on March 3, 1909 in Saltio, Mexico and lived in Texas before moving to Lansing, where she retired from Jim’s Tiffany Restaurant. Surviving are: 4 sons, Robert (Doris) Barrera of Mason, Mario (Diane) Barrera of Lansing, Frank Pesino of Lansing, and George (Melissa) Barrera of Lansing; 36 grandchildren; many great grandchildren and great great grandchildren. She was preceded in death by: her husband, Roberto in 1973; daughter, Beatrice Maldonado; 4 grandsons, Ron Lopez, John Lopez, Ricky Lopez and Jessie Maldonado. A funeral service will be held at 12:00 p.m. on Thursday, December 2, 2004 at the Estes-Leadley Greater Lansing Chapel. Interment will follow in Maple Hill Cemetery. The family will receive friends at the funeral home from 2-4 and 6-8 p.m. on Wednesday. In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to Heartland Hospice in memory of Celia Barrera.

Age 65, passed away on August 1, 2003. He was born on August 15, 1937 and was a veteran of the U.S. Air Force having served for 4 years. Bill retired from Lucent Technologies on September 25, 1992, after 32 years of service. He was a past Governor of the Moose Lodge #288 Lansing Chapter and received his fellowship degree and was also a member of Mason-Holt Aerie #3734 F.O.E. Bill is survived by, Barbara, his wife of 24 years, 10 children, Penny (Jim) Smaardyk, Tammy (Brian) Case, Chris (Priscilla) White, Jason (Tracy) White, Dawn Dubois, Cheryl (Gary) Dorer, Karen (Jim) Lowell, Sondra (Marc) Olin, Robbin (Roy) Ploughman and Brenda (Tom) Larkins; 20 grandchildren; 4 great grandchildren; brothers, Mel (EllenJo) White, Chuck White, Tom White, and Bob (Ruth) White; sisters, Susan White and Mary (John) Bartel; several close brothers & sisters-in-law, nieces, nephews; and many dear friends. Funeral services will be held at 1:00 p.m. on Tuesday, August 5, 2003 at the Estes-Leadley Holt/Delhi Chapel, 2121 N. Cedar St., Holt with special services being provided by the Lansing Moose Lodge #288. Following the service a luncheon will be held at the Moose Lodge, 2631 Eaton Rapids Road, Lansing. The family will receive friends from 2-4 and 6-8 p.m. on Monday at the funeral home. Age 75, WWII U.S. Navy veteran, passed away on Wednesday, February 27, 2002. He was born on February 15, 1927 in Lansing, the son of William E. and Lulu M. (Burke) Provost. He was employed by the State of Michigan, Department of Corrections for 30 years and was a Boy Scout Leader of Troop #34. He was preceded in death by: his wife Dorothy on June 7, 2001. He is survived by sons, Michael G. and Craig W. Provost. Funeral services were held at 11:00 a.m., Monday, March 4, 2002 at Chapel Hill Memorial Gardens/Mausoleum with Pastor Wesley B. Emerson officiating. Military honors were provided by Morley S. Oates Post #701 V.F.W. There was no visitation.
