Nelon, Ruth M.

Delta Township, MI

Age 93, passed away on Wednesday, January 2, 2002. Mrs. Nelon was born on August 21, 1908 to William and Anna Jackson in Sharon, TN. Mrs. Nelon was a member of Ada Briggs Soroity. She was associated with Maurice Clothing Store from its beginning until its closing. She was preceded in death by her husband, Homer Nelon in 1989; daughter, Gwendolyn Ramsey in 1980; and son-in-law, Richard Ramsey in 1995. She is survived by: 3 grandchildren, Steven Ramsey of Lansing, Kirk (Rhonda) Ramsey of Grand Ledge, Robin (Jim) Henshaw of Charlotte, NC; 6 great grandchildren, Brandon Ramsey, Shana Ramsey, Brittany Ramsey, Kalli Ramsey, Gwendolyn Henshaw, Elisabeth Henshaw; special friend, Ginny Similia; and several nieces and nephews. A funeral service was conducted by Fr. Stanley Czarnota at 10:00 a.m., on Monday, January 7, 2002 at the Estes-Leadley Greater Lansing Chapel with interment in Delta Center Cemetery. The family received friends at the funeral home from 4-7 p.m., on Sunday, January 6, 2002. The family wishes to express a sincere thanks to the entire staff on the 2nd Floor West Wing at the Sparrow Dimondale Center, for their care and compassion. In lieu of flowers, contributions may be made to Advent House Ministries in memory of Mrs. Nelson.

Shier, Penny K.

Holt, MI (formerly of Grosse Point Woods, MI)

Age 65, passed away on Tuesday, March 18, 2003. She was born on September 9, 1937 in Detroit to William and Edna (Ryan) Nicholson. Penny will always be loved and missed by; daughters, Lori (Andrew) Hemenway and Carol (Gerald) Smith; son, Peter Shier; grandchildren, Lyndi, Ryan, Amy, Griffin and Alex; sister, Beverly (James) Marshall of Grosse Pte., MI. The family will receive visitors from 4 to 6 p.m. on Friday, March 21, 2003 at the Estes-Leadley Holt/Delhi Chapel. There will be no formal services held. In lieu of flowers, contributions may be given to Hospice of Mid-Michigan.

Johnston, Rhett
Lansing, MI

Age 57, passed away on October 26, 2003. Rhett was born on December 30, 1945 in Detroit, the son of Wesley Amos and Elizabeth Friend (Cooper) Johnston. He was a graduate of Michigan State University. Rhett was Director of St. Vincent DePaul Society of Lansing for the past 8 years and President of St. Vincent DePaul Council of St. Casimir. He was a youth soccer, floor hockey and baseball coach from 1982 – present; was on the Board of Directors, Greater Lansing Housing Coalition from 1989 – present; was on the volunteer staff at Loaves and Fishes Emergency Shelter from 1983 – present; was President, Vice-President, Chairman, Personnel Committee, and on the Board of Directors of Catholic Social Services/St. Vincent Home for Children from 1988 – present; was on the Board of Directors of Christian Services of Greater Lansing from 1995 – present; was on the Board of Directors of the Westside Neighborhood Association; was on the Social Ministry Commission at St. Casimir Catholic Church from 1985 – present; was on the Michigan League for Human Services Public Policy Committee; and was Co-Chair, Board of Directors & Co-Founder, Lansing Area Rotating Sanctuary (emergency shelter) and Volunteer Coordinator/Manager of St. Casimir Church LARS shelter. He is survived by: his wife, Bernice; daughters, Amy (Christopher) Knape of Grand Rapids, and Katherine Johnston of Chicago; son, Kevin Johnston of San Diego; grandsons, Benjamin and William Knape; father, Wesley Johnston of Haslett; brother, Richard Johnston of Eagle; sister, Diane (Stuart) Leslie of Okemos; mother-in-law, Nita Bruckman of Grand Rapids; and many nieces and nephews. A funeral mass will be celebrated at 11:00 a.m. on Thursday, October 30, 2003 at St. Casimir Catholic Church, 815 Sparrow, Lansing, with Fr. Bill Lugger as celebrant. Family and friends are invited to a luncheon at the church following the service. The family will receive friends at the Estes-Leadley Greater Lansing Chapel from 2-4 and 6-8 p.m. on Wednesday, where the Rosary will be recited at 7:00 p.m. and he will lie-in-state from 10:00 to 11:00 a.m. on Thursday at the church. Memorial contributions may be made to Mother Teresa House, P.O. Box 13004, Lansing, MI 48901 in memory of Rhett Johnston.

Puterbaugh, Helen Louise

Holt (formerly of Flint)

Age 85, died November 2, 2002, she was born in Missouri on May 16, 1917 to Lawrence and Willie (Bailey) Nelson and had lived in Flint since 1935. Mrs. Puterbaugh attended Central Baptist Church in Flint. She is survived by her sister, Laurencine Bader and her husband, Paul of Holt and their children, John E. Bader and Jodie Mataya. Mrs. Puterbaugh was preceded in death by her husband, Everett Puterbaugh and a son, Lawrence Puterbaugh. She received her R.N. degree from the Baptist Memorial Hospital in Memphis, TN. She was on the staff of the Woman's Hospital in Flint and when the new McLaren Hospital was opened, she was assigned to that unit. She was fond of recounting that when she went to McLaren, there was a social gathering held to greet the incoming staff and Mrs. McLaren was present to personally greet the members of the new nursing staff. She later worked for General Motors in Flint at the Fisher Body Plant and at the VanSlyk Plant as an industrial nurse. In 1970, she retired to join with her husband in buying and collecting antique furniture and collectables. Funeral services will be held at 10:00 a.m. Wednesday, November 6, 2002 at the Estes-Leadley Holt/Delhi Chapel. Interment will follow at 1:00 p.m. in Flint Memorial Park Cemetery, Flint, MI. The family will receive visitors from 4-6 p.m. on Tuesday at the funeral home.

White, Margaret G. "Margie"

Lansing, MI

Age 75, passed away on May 21, 2002 at her home in the presence of her family. She was born on November 19, 1926 to George and Gertrude Provencher. She married William White in 1944 and they have lived in the Lansing area ever since. Margie enjoyed working in her garden and was an avid bowler. She was preceded in death by: sister, Arlene; brother, Leonard; and step-brother, Everett George. She is survived by: her husband, William White; children, Steven White and Lindsey (Sondra) White; grandchildren, Jason, Danielle and Andrea White; step-grandchildren, Michael and Kristen O'Connor; sister, Irene G. Ostrander; special cousin, Charlotte Gladstone; and many nieces and nephews. A funeral service will be held at 2:00 p.m., on Friday, May 24, 2002 at the Estes-Leadley Holt/Delhi Chapel, with Mr. Bruce Anderson officiating. Interment in Chapel Hill Memorial Gardens. The family will receive friends from 6-8 p.m., Wednesday and from 2-4 and 6-8 p.m., on Thursday at the funeral home. In lieu of flowers, contributions may be made to Hospice of Lansing, Inc.

Knisely, Emma E.

Lansing, MI

Age 93, passed away on November 26, 2001. She was born on August 17, 1908 in Portland, MI, and was a resident of Lansing for 70 years, the last 2 ½ years at Hensley's Foster Care in Holt. She was preceded in death by her husband, Alton B. Knisely, and daughter, Ann Rice. Surviving are: son, Donald A. (Marie) Knisely of Lansing; son-in-law, Jack Rice of Mason; sister, Julia Whorley of Saranac, MI; 9 grandchildren; 20 great grandchildren. Interment will be in Chapel Hill Memorial Gardens. There will be no service or visitation at this time. Memorial contributions may be made to Ingham Hospice. Arrangements by the Estes-Leadley Greater Lansing Chapel.

Testaguzza, Rose Palma

East Lansing, MI

Age 91, passed away on Tuesday, May 21, 2002. She was born on March 29, 1911 in Boston, Massachusetts, the daughter of Joseph and Maria Sabatino. She was preceded in death by: husband, Cesare; son, Pierre; and daughter, Virginia Pallazzola. She is survived by: son, Cesare Danova; and 3 grandchildren. Funeral services will be held at 11:30 a.m., Friday, May 24, 2002 in the Mausoleum at St. Joseph Catholic Cemetery. Arrangements by the Estes-Leadley Greater Lansing Chapel.

Felton, Kenneth R.

Holt

Age 75, surrounded by his loving family, died March 6, 2004, in Lansing, MI. Mr. Felton was employed at J.W. Knapp Co. in Lansing for 28 years. Retiring from Delhi Township in 1990. He is survived by his wife of 55 years, Joyce; daughters, Christine Felton of Howell, Marcia (Louie) Smith of Haslett; son, Timothy of Detroit and Tomme of Lansing; 5 grandchildren; 9 great grandchildren; brothers, Ronald, Rodney and Benjamin; sisters, Dorothy and Joyce; beloved nephew, James (Kathy) Felton of Holt and many other loving nieces and nephews and his loving pet, Skeeter. He was preceded in death by: his son, Bruce; brother, Robert; sisters, Bonnie, Betty and Wilma. Funeral services will be held at Noon on Wednesday, March 10, 2004 at the Estes-Leadley Holt/Delhi Chapel. The family will receive visitors from 6 to 8 p.m. Monday and 2 to 4 and 6 to 8 p.m. on Tuesday at the funeral home.
