Knighten, James A.

Age 69, passed away on April 23, 2002 after an extended struggle with Parkinson's Disease. He was born in Corsicana, TX. Mr. Knighten served in the U.S. Air Force during the Korean Conflict. He spent the early part of his life as a musician playing the trombone. He later earned a degree in education from Texas Technical College, served as a teacher and later as superintendent of a rural Texas High School. He spent the latter part of his life as a broker of petroleum land leases, from which he retired after being diagnosed with Parkinson's Disease. A champion of hard work and common sense with a humor to keep it all palatable. Mr. Knighten was a great example that anything is possible with drive and determination. He is survived by: daughter, Kathy Jean Johnson and her children; and son, James, A. Knighten, Jr., who will miss him greatly. A memorial service will be held at 3:00 p.m., on May 2, 2002 at the First Congregational Church in Onondaga.

Age 88, passed away Nov. 13, 2002. She was born in Berlin, Germany June 10, 1914 to Otto and Marieanna (Hurbul) Piotrowski. She graduated from the School of Hard Knocks, Magna Cum Laude. She attended Holt United Methodist Church faithfully when in good health. She was married to Newman J. Blackmore, Clifton A. Cornelius and Harold T. Blackford. All preceded her in death. Also preceding her in death, son Gary G. (Blackmore) Cornelius, daughter, Joan M. (Blackmore) Cornelius, extended family, son, John W. Cornelius, Alice L. Cornelius, Gordon F. Cornelius, Harold Blackford, Jr., James B. Blackford, brothers, George Peters and Alois O.F. Piotrowski. Surviving are devoted son, Bruce N. (Blackmore) (Janet) Cornelius, Sr., faithful friend, Dolores A. Cornelius, extended family, Patricia B Langtry, Clarice Mars; many grandchildren, great grandchildren, great great grandchildren, nieces and nephews. Hilda entered the work force at Home Dairy and shortly thereafter went to work at Estell’s Good Health Cafeteria as Hospitality Hostess and cashier, staying there five years. She married Newman J. Blackmore and became a homemaker until Newman’s death. Later she worked for Kessler Construction Co. as a secretary and advanced to Vice President. She also worked in sales for Furman Day Realty Co. until an automobile accident forced her to retire. Hilda was active in Holt Chapter #510 O.E.S. as Worthy Matron and County President, receiving both Life and Fifty Year Certificates. She also was a member of the Bertha Street Club from its inception. Funeral services will be held at 10:00 a.m. Monday, Nov. 18, 2002 at the Holt United Methodist Church, 2321 N. Aurelius Rd.; Holt, MI with The Rev. Lynn Grimes and The Rev. Joseph Huston officiating. Interment will follow at Maple Ridge Cemetery. The family will receive friends at the Estes-Leadley Holt/Delhi Chapel from 2-4 and 6-8 p.m. Sunday. Memorial contributions may be made to the Holt United Methodist Church or to Mason Chapter #150 O.E.S.
Leffingwell, E. Lorena
Holt, MI
Age 95, passed away on March 23, 2002. She was born on September 23, 1906, to Edwin and Hattie (Martin) Leffingwell. She was the first blind student to graduate from Michigan State College, graduating in 1929. Ms. Leffingwell went on to teach at the Michigan School for the Blind. Surviving are: cousins, George and Russell Traeyz; special friends, Doris Shearer, Mary Ann (Mick) Middaugh and Fran (Charles) Christensen. A funeral service was held at 1:00 p.m., on Tuesday, March 26, 2002 at the Estes-Leadley Holt/Delhi Chapel, with the Rev. Carl Allen of South Church of the Nazarene officiating. Interment was in Deepdale Memorial Gardens. Visitation was at the funeral home from 2-4 and 6-8 p.m., Monday, March 25, 2002.
Bos, Douglas G.
Holt, MI
Douglas Green Bos was born June 9th, 1950, and passed away June 15th, 2004 with his daughter at his side. Doug was a longtime resident of Holt, who loved his Harley’s, camping, fishing and collecting knives. Doug served in the US Navy. He’s survived by his daughter Michelle (Eric) Nelson of Eaton Rapids and his two sisters Deb (Don) Yauch and Marianne (Gary) Hayden of Tuscon, Arizona. Graveside services will be held at 1:00 p.m. on Thursday, June 24, 2004 at Fort Custer National Cemetery, Augusta, MI. Memorial contributions may be made to the American Heart Association in memory of Douglas Bos. Arrangements by the Estes-Leadley Holt/Delhi Chapel.
Moon, Josephine (Jo)

On February 15th Jo’s earthly journey ended and an eternal journey of everlasting life began. Jo was born July 30, 1915 in Rockport, Texas. She lived a long and rich life and believed in “keeping busy”. She was a former employee of the Lansing Parks and Recreation Department working with senior citizens. Jo was also a ten-year volunteer with the Ingham Regional Medical Center. She had a great sense of humor and enjoyed being around people. One of her greatest pleasures was participating in a water aerobics class at the Oak Park YMCA. Jo was preceded in death by her parents, Walter and Mary (Rodda) Tregoning, three brothers, one sister, and her husband of 58 years, Harold, and son H.N. (Tom) Moon. Surviving is her daughter Mary Jo (Robert) Stewart of Mason, daughter-in-law, Jacqueline Moon of San Clemente, CA, six grandchildren and six great grandchildren. A special ‘thank you’ to Jack and Dorothy Hendra for the friendship they shared with Jo these many years. With much gratitude we appreciate those who cared for Jo at Prestige Way in Holt, MI. Jo thought of Prestige Way as her home and those who cared for her became members of her extended family. Her life was enriched to the end by all of her new friends. Thank you. Funeral services will be held 3:00 p.m. Tuesday, February 18, 2003 at the Estes-Leadley Holt/Delhi Chapel with The Rev. Stephen F. Ezop officiating. White, Evelyn Grace

Age 84, passed away on Saturday, August 17, 2002. She was born September 13, 1917 in Lansing and had lived all of her life in this area. She graduated from Eastern High School in 1935. Evelyn had worked for the Federal Government and the State of Michigan for a number of years. Mrs. White served on several city committees and boards and initiated the effort for an “Old Town” and historic preservation for North Lansing. She had also composed a song titled “Michigan” which was used in the 1960 celebration of Michigan Week. Mrs. White was a member of the Lansing Seventh-Day Adventist Church, the Gleaners Rebekah Lodge #74, the A.A.R.P. Association and the Eaton and Ingham County Humane Societies. Evelyn was preceded in death by her husband of 52 years, Carlos J. White, in 1992. She is survived by two half-brothers, William and Robert Walter, several nieces, cousins and many dear friends. Visitation will be held at the Estes-Leadley Greater Lansing Chapel on Tuesday, August 20, 2002 from 4-7 p.m. Religious graveside services will be conducted by Pastor Charles Davisson of the Lansing Seventh-Day Adventist Church on Wednesday, August 21, 2002 at 2:30 p.m.
Collins, John L.

John L. Collins, esteemed trial lawyer, whose association with the Lansing law firm of Foster, Swift, Collins & Smith, P.C., spanned nearly five decades, died Tuesday, December 11, 2001. He was 75. During his career, Mr. Collins received numerous honors and appointments, including service as a Commissioner of the State Bar of Michigan (1989-1997); being named in the "Best Lawyers in America" each year since 1988; being elected as a Fellow of the American College of Trial Lawyers and appointed a member of the American Board of Trial Advocates. He was a member of the Phi Delta Phi legal fraternity and held memberships in the Ingham County and Michigan Bar Associations. He was the recipient of the Leo A. Farhat Outstanding Attorney Award in 1991. As a trial lawyer, Mr. Collins was known as a formidable opponent whose arguments often included blunt and salty comments. He was known in the legal community as a "lawyers' lawyer, " and frequently was heard saying how much he loved the practice. Born May 17, 1926, in Alpena, Michigan, the son of Ralph Victor and Julia Alexandra Collins, he attended the public schools there before matriculating at Michigan State University from which he received a Bachelor of Science degree in 1951. During the Korean conflict and the occupation which ensued, Mr. Collins served in the U.S. Army with the Wolf-Hounds and enjoyed telling stories about his time in Asia aboard the Naval vessel "SS Marine Serpent." Following graduation from MSU, he married his campus sweetheart Mary Alice Davis, set out for the nation's Capital, and enrolled in George Washington University, from which he obtained his Juris Doctor degree in 1955. In that year, returning to East Lansing, he spent a year as law clerk for Chief Justice of the Michigan Supreme Court Leland W. Carr, an experience to which he referred as " a great privilege." At the end of this period in 1956, he joined the law firm which bears his name. Mr. Collins served on the board of the East Lansing Library and was a director of the City Club of Lansing, being instrumental in forging its merger with the University Club. In addition to his wife of 50 years, Mr. Collins is survived by a brother, Ralph (Lesley) Porter Collins; a sister, Shirley (Otto) Witt both of Florida; a daughter, Victoria (Michael) Ellen Gallo; son, Matthew (Lenora) Warren Collins; a grandson, Hull Stewart Collins; granddaughters, Isabella Mary Gallo and Nora Davis Collins; five nieces and nephews. A Memorial Service was held for Mr. Collins at 10:00 a.m. Monday, December 17, 2001 at All Saints Episcopal Church, 800 Abbott Road, East Lansing, with the Very Reverend Caroline Stacey officiating. Interment in Harbor Springs will be private. There will be no funeral home visitation. In lieu of flowers, contributions may be made in memory of Mr. Collins to the Capital Region Community Foundation; 6035 Executive Dr.; Lansing, MI 48911.
