Age 88, passed away on November 6, 2003. Funeral services will be held at 10:00 a.m. on Monday, November 10, 2003 at the Estes-Leadley Greater Lansing Chapel. Interment will follow in Resurrection Cemetery in Clinton Township. The family will receive friends from 12-8 p.m. on Sunday at the funeral home, where the Rosary will be prayed at 7:30 p.m.

Whitaker, Mildred W. “Midge”

Lansing, MI

For what is it to die, but to have the soul leave the body unencumbered? On this day, Oct. 7, 2002 at the age of 83, our beloved mother, Mildred W. Whitaker, returned to a sacred place of love and light and peace. Mildred was born in Edmore, MI on Feb. 19, 1919 and lived most of her life in the Lansing area. She was a 1937 graduate of Lansing Eastern High School; a former member of the Vivian Society of the Elks; and a member of Plymouth Congregational Church. It was in the 1940’s while she was employed with the Michigan Dept. of Military Affairs, that she met and married her second husband (of 41 years), Col. Leo C. Whitaker. He preceded her in death on Feb. 11, 1993. Surviving are her children, SuEllyn Gilreath of Lansing, Marillyn (Derrick) Beard of Mansfield, TX., Maryann (Joe) Edgerley of New Hope, MN, Joni Whitaker of Lansing, David (Mary) Whitaker of Morrice, MI; 16 Grandchildren and 18 Great Grandchildren; Sister, Jean M. Bennett of Lansing; and many nieces and nephews. The funeral service will be held at 10:00 a.m. Wednesday, Oct. 9, 2002 at the Estes-Leadley Greater Lansing Chapel, with The Rev. Dr. Lloyd M. Hall, Jr., Interim Pastor of Plymouth Congregational Church officiating. Interment will follow in the Potterville Cemetery. The family will receive friends at the funeral home from 2-4 and 6-8 p.m. Tuesday. Memorial contributions may be made to the Alzheimer’s Association or Hospice of Lansing Residence. We will miss her sweet and loving spirit.

Laxton, Ronald L.

Cary, IL (Formerly of Lansing)

Ronald L. Laxton died unexpectly on Tuesday, April 8th. He was the beloved husband to Barbara, nee MacDonald for 21 years. Devoted son of Joyce and Larry, best pal and brother to Kathie (Robert) Blake. Favorite uncle of Mark, David and Stephen MacDonald and Ashley and Max Moore. Friend and Helper to many. He was preceded in death by his grandparents. Born in Lansing on September 10, 1957, he graduated from Waverly High School and Lansing Community College. He was a lifelong Michigan State Spartan fan. His passion was acting. He performed in many plays in the Chicago area as well as in the films, “Groundhog Day, ” “The Fugitive, ” and “Straight Talk.” At the time of his death he was appearing in “To Kill A Mockingbird” at the Metropolis Theater in Arlington Heights, Illinois. Ron appeared as Santa for the Cary Community Christmas program and helped many families and businesses celebrate the holidays in this role. He loved gardening and attending sports and musical events for the children in his neighborhood. Funeral services will be held at 12:00 p.m. on Monday, April 14, 2003 at the Estes-Leadley Greater Lansing Chapel, with The Rev. David R. Pike of St. David’s Episcopal Church, officiating. Interment will follow in Chapel Hill Memorial Gardens. The family will receive friends at the funeral home from 4-9 p.m. on Sunday. Pederson, Eleanore L.

Bear Lake, MI (formerly of Lansing, MI)

Eleanore L. Pederson, peacefully passed away on November 12, 2001 in Grand Rapids, Michigan, following a brief illness. Born on July 15, 1914, to Max and Ona Carvo, she was raised in Harrisville, Michigan. The eldest of three children, she was preceded in death by her brother, Alton; and sister, Virginia (Van) VanOs. Eleanore married Elmer C. "Pete" Pederson of Luverne, Minnesota, on June 19, 1944. The couple resided in Lansing, Michigan for 30 years. Upon retirement they divided their time between their homes in Gulf Harbors, Florida and Bear Lake, Michigan. Elmer passed away in June of 1989. A life-long learner, Eleanore earned her Bachelor's (Central State Teacher's College-'41), Master's and Doctorate's degrees (Michigan State University-'52 and '66) in education. From her humble beginnings in a one-room schoolhouse in Harrisville to her role as a highly respected principal of Lansing's Christiancy Elementary, Verlinden, Barnes and Woodcreek Schools, Eleanore loved her work. For the past 10 years she has been an outstanding volunteer at the Hernado Pasco Hospice in Newport-Richey, Florida. She was a member of Faith Lutheran Church in Newport-Richey and a lifetime member of the Michigan Education Association. Eleanore's thoughtful words of wisdom; unassuming manner; professionalism and high regard for the potential of each young mind touched the lives and hearts of all who had the privilege of knowing her. Her family, friends and colleagues all appreciated the standards by which she lived and the model she provided for "children" of all ages. God bless her for her unselfish gifts of time and love. She is survived by her son, Harold (Nancy) Pederson of Grand Rapids, MI; two grandsons, Tim (Marcia) Pederson of St. Louis, MO and Scott (Theresa) Pederson of Grand Rapids, MI; five great grandchildren, Brook, Bradley, Sean, Katrina and Kirsten; and many nieces and nephews. A graveside service was held on Friday, November 16, 2001 at 11:30 a.m., at Deepdale Memorial Gardens in Lansing, MI. Those wishing to make an expression of gratitude for the life she lived may consider a contribution to the Eleanore L. Pederson Memorial Fund at Hospice of Pasco County in Newport-Richey, Florida. Arrangements by the Estes-Leadley Greater Lansing Chapel.

Alexander, James Athanasios
Lansing

Age 75, passed away on November 8, 2002. He was born on July 24, 1927 in Aigion, Greece. After serving as an electrician in the Greek Navy, he immigrated to the U.S. in 1950. He married Helen Mavrakis and moved to Lansing in 1951. Mr. Alexander was employed for several years at Lansing Electric Motors, before going into business. For a long time, he owned the Dog-N-Suds in Delta Township. He was a longtime member and past board member of Holy Trinity Greek Orthodox Church; longtime member and several term past president of the American Hellenic Education Progressive Association (AHEPA), Wolverine Chapter 10, and founder of the annual AHEPA graduation banquet. He was also a member of Lansing Aerie #1039, F.O. Eagles. Surviving are: his wife, Helen; sons, Thomas and Michael; 4 grandchildren, including Dimitri, Stephanie, Theodore and Nicholas; brothers, Constantine, Spiros and John; sisters, Eleni and Efstathia, and several nephews and nieces. A funeral service will be held at 10:00 a.m. Monday, November 11, 2002, at Holy Trinity Greek Orthodox Church, 1701 E, Saginaw St., Lansing, with Fr. Mark Sietsema officiating. Interment will follow at Chapel Hill Memorial Gardens. The family will receive friends at the Estes-Leadley Greater Lansing Chapel from 6-8 p.m. Sunday, where a Trisagion service will be held at 7:30 p.m. In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to AHEPA District 10, Educational Foundation in memory of James A. Alexander.

Anderson, R E Olds (Olie)

East Lansing, MI

Age 86, passed away peacefully at his home on Feb. 21, 2003. He was born Aug. 23, 1916 in Lansing. Olds is the son of the late Bruce E. Anderson and Gladys Olds Anderson and the eldest grandson of R.E. Olds. His early education was in Lansing schools and Cranbrook School in Bloomfield Hills. His college education was divided between Dartmouth College and Michigan State College from which he holds a certificate in Agricultural Engineering. He was awarded an Honorary Doctor of Business Administration degree by Hillsdale College in 1977. He has studied the Spanish language and history at Lansing Community College and Michigan State University, and spoke the language well. His aviation career began in 1939 when he soloed off the gravel runway at the Lansing airport. Flying took him to Texas where he started working for the Civil Aeronautics Administration’s Standardization Center as a Link trailer instructor. Seven years later when he left the CAA (now FAA) he was Assistant Director of the Instrument and Multi-engine School of the FAA’s Aeronautical Center in Oklahoma City. He continued recreational flying well in to his sixties. In 1948, Olds went into the hotel business with his father at the Hotel Olds starting as a storeroom helper and working through the various departments. In 1952, he became Assistant Mgr. of the hotel, and was proposed for the Lansing Rotary Club by his father who had become a Lansing Rotarian the same year the club was chartered (1916). (Olds’ grandfather, Ransom E. Olds, was an Honorary member of the Lansing Rotary Club.) In 1960, Olds became Manager of the Olds Hotel and remained in that capacity until it was sold to Jack Tar, Inc. He then owned and operated the Inn America Motor Hotel in East Lansing. During his hotel career Olds was active in the Michigan Hotel Association, American Hotel Association, and the East Michigan Tourist Association of which he became president in 1965. He was President of the R. E. Olds Company, and the Ransom Fidelity Co. He was the elected Secretary of the Lansing Rotary Club from 1973 – 1990. He is a Past Chairman of the Michigan State University Foundation; a former member of the Board of Directors of the Bank of Lansing; and in 1976 received a permanent appointment to the Board of Directors of the Convention Bureau of Greater Lansing, of which he helped found. He was also active with the Lansing Regional Chamber of Commerce and was named one of the 100 Most Influential People in the Lansing area. His primary hobbies were photography, ancient Middle Eastern and Mexican history, and traveling. He was a member of All Saints Episcopal Church of East Lansing; a Director Emeritus of Ingham Regional Medical Center and of their Foundation Board. He was a former Trustee of the Archeological Conservancy of Albuquerque, NM; member of the City Club of Lansing; a Board Member and supporter of Woldumar Nature Center, which his mother founded; Director Emeritus of World Neighbors, Inc. of Oklahoma City; a Quiet Birdman; and was a member of the Henry Dunant and Clara Barton Society of the American Red Cross. In 1999 the R E Olds Anderson Cardiac Rehabilitation Center at Ingham Regional Medical Center was named for him. He has received prestigious awards from the Salvation Army, Boys and Girls Club, Camp Highfields, and received the Ingham Healthcare Foundation Award in 1990. He was a founder, along with Jack Breslin of the Signet Society at Ingham Regional Medical Center. Surviving are: his wife of over 50 years, Doris; 4 Daughters, Diane Tarpoff of East Lansing, Deborah (Peter) Stephens of Dublin, OH, Katrina Anderson (Michael Denomy) of Newton, Mass, Metta Jane Anderson of Bogota, Columbia; Son, R E Olds Anderson, Jr. (Sally) of Carlton, MI; 5 Grandchildren, Emily, Matt, Gregg, Heather and Ben; 2 great grandchildren; Sister, Peggy (Jim) Wortz of Riverside, CA; nieces and nephews. A Memorial Service will held at All Saints Episcopal Church; 800 Abbott Road, East Lansing at 10:00 a.m. on Wednesday, February 26, 2003, with The Very Rev. Caroline Stacey officiating. There will be a memorial visitation at the Estes-Leadley Greater Lansing Chapel from 4:00 – 7:00 p.m. on Tuesday. In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to All Saints Episcopal Church, the American Red Cross or Camp Highfields.

Nederveld, Jonathan D.

Lansing, MI

Age 22, beloved son, brother, and grandson, went to be with the Lord on Sunday, January 20, 2002, he will be sadly missed. He was born on July 18, 1979 in Lansing. Jon loved life and his family. He is survived by his parents, David and Yvonne Nederveld; sister, Sarah (Rich) Flinton; grandparents, Don and Lenegene Brooks; grandmother, Eleanor Nederveld; nephews, Evan and Zack Flinton; niece, Angela Maas; aunts, Dianne (Allen) Perkins, Mary (Bill) Opland and Carol Brooks; uncles, Don (Debi) Brooks, Jack (Resa) Brooks and Bruce (Kay) Nederveld; and many beloved cousins. He was preceded in death by his grandfather, Cilfford A. Nederveld. A funeral service was offered at 11:30 a.m., on Thursday, January 24, 2002 at Immanuel Community Reformed Church, 3200 Delta River Drive, Lansing, with the Rev. Richard Heusinkveld officiating. Interment was in Delta Center Cemetery. The family received visitors from 2-4 and 6-8 p.m., on Wednesday, January 23, 2002 at the Estes-Leadley Greater Lansing Chapel. Memorial contributions may be made to Immanuel Community Reformed Church, in Jonathan's memory.

Flanders, Laura I.

Lansing, Michigan
Age 90, passed away on July 29, 2004. She was born on April 6, 1914 in Hillman, MI, and has lived in the Lansing area most of her life. Mrs. Flanders was a 1932 graduate of Lansing Central High School, and was a computer programmer at MSU department of Agriculture, retiring in 1976. She was preceded in death by her husband, Russell in 1957. Surviving are: 2 sons, James (Susan) Flanders of Lansing and Richard (Gloria) Flanders of Perry; 6 grandchildren; 14 great grandchildren; 7 great-great grandchildren; sister, Ruth Schimburg. A funeral service will be held at 2:00 p.m. Monday, August 2, 2004, at the Estes-Leadley Greater Lansing Chapel, with Pastor Robert M. Grimwood, of Lake Lansing Baptist Church officiating. Interment will follow in Chapel Hill Memorial Gardens. The family will receive friends at the funeral home from 6-8 p.m. Sunday.
