Virginia M. Atayan
Virginia Margaret Atayan (“Ginny”) was born on December 31, 1936 in Highland Park, MI and passed away on October 10, 2002 in Lansing. She had been a long time resident of Delta Township. Ginny was chief executive officer of Davis Pontiac Buick GMC of Charlotte, MI from 1981 to the present. She received numerous awards over the years from General Motors, Ford, and Chrysler, and was an active board member of several industrial, real estate and financial companies. Ginny was also passionate about helping others. She proactively served the community in numerous charitable activities; as an emeritus trustee of Sparrow Health System, she served with dedication for many years; as past president of Camp Highfields; as one of several founders of the Ararat Fund; and as a sustaining member of the Junior League of Lansing. Ginny worked closely with many disadvantaged individuals and families on a private basis to help further their dreams and aspirations. Ginny was a long time parishioner of St. Paul’s Episcopal Church in Lansing, where she sang in the choir, served on the vestry and worked diligently to bring the works of the church into the community. Ginny was also an avid gardener and physical fitness devotee. Ginny graduated from J.W. Sexton High School in 1954 and from the University of Michigan in 1958 with a B.A. in education. After graduation, she served as a schoolteacher in Saline, MI and a substitute teacher in the Waverly School District for several years. She was also a swimming instructor and taught many adults and children, including those with special needs, how to swim. Ginny was a strong believer that education was a life long activity and applied her educational and motivational skills throughout her business and charitable careers. Ginny is survived by her husband of 43 years, Leon Atayan; her three sons, Christopher (Rene’) of Bronxville, New York, Michael and Andrew, both of Lansing; two grandchildren, Alina and Ara of Bronxville; and her brother, Theodore (Sonya) Terzian of Lansing, MI; and many nieces and nephews. She will be deeply missed by her entire family. Visitation will be held at the Estes-Leadley Greater Lansing Chapel, 325 W. Washtenaw, Lansing, from 2-4 and 6-8 p.m., on Friday, October 18, 2002. A special funeral service with choral accompaniment in celebration of Ginny’s life will be held at St. Paul’s Episcopal Church, 218 W. Ottawa, Lansing, at 10:00 a.m. on Saturday, October 19, 2002 with the Rev. Dr. Gordon Weller officiating. Interment will follow in Deepdale Memorial Gardens. A luncheon reception will follow services at the cemetery. All of the friends of Ginny and her family are cordially invited. Memorial contributions may be made to St. Paul’s Episcopal Church, 218 W. Fountain, Alma E.

Lansing, MI

Age 67, passed away on Friday, December 27, 2002, she was born on December 18, 1935 in DeTour Village, MI to Marvin and Mildred Woods. As a child she was active in the Detour Union Presbyterian Church and the 4-H Club, she also loved to play softball. She graduated Valedictorian of her high school class and continued after high school to attend Alma College. She was actively involved with the girl scout troops serving as a troop leader. Alma loved to collect light houses from the Great Lakes. Most of all, she was a very loving and devoted wife and mother. Her greatest joy came from her grandchildren, whom she cherished dearly. She is survived by her husband of 46 years, Vernon Fountain; sons, Mickey (Sandy) Fountain and Glenn (Susan) Fountain; daughters, Janet (Chris) Guttridge and Joan (Scott) Dunlap; 9 grandchildren, Michael and Jordynn Fountain, Eric, Emily and Jason Fountain, Nolan and Kristen Guttridge, Kirk and Katie Dunlap; brother, Raymond (Janice) Woods. She was preceded in death by her parents, 3 brothers, Elwyn, William and Wayne Woods. Funeral services will be held at 2:00 p.m. on Monday, December 30, 2002 at the Estes-Leadley Holt/Delhi Chapel, with the Rev. Greg Steere of Holt Christian Church officiating. The family will receive friends from 12:00 Noon until service time on Monday at the funeral home. In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be given to the American Lung Association

Moore, Harold A.

Lansing, MI

Age 78, WWII veteran, passed away on Monday, October 15, 2001. Mr. Moore is best known for his many years of dedicated service to the Lansing Area. He served on the Lansing City Council from 1955-58 and from 1965-73. He was Mayor Pro Tem of Lansing for 3 years, served on the Lansing Board of Education for 6 years as Secretary and Treasurer, served on the Ingham County Board of Supervisors and was President of the Greater Lansing Association of Retarded Citizens and President of the coordinating committee for the Handicapped. Mr. Moore was a member of the Lansing Board of Review for Property Tax Assessment for several years and was on the founding board of Lansing Community College. He was also one of the founding members of the MSU Nursing Healthcare Community Advisory Board and was Chaplain of the Veteran's of Foreign Wars Post 701 in Lansing. Mr. Moore worked for J.W. Knapp's for 25 years, managed National Cablevision, was a broker for Mulder Realty, and also worked with Capital Area Community Services. Mr. Moore was preceded in death by: 2 daughters, Camille and Marjorie. He is survived by: his wife of 56 years, Marjorie A. Moore; daughters, Pamela and Suzanne Moore; sister, Anna Estep; and numerous cousins, nieces and nephews. The Moore Living Centers are named in honor of Harold A. Moore and Marjorie A. Moore for their efforts in improving the lives of persons who are developmentally disabled. In lieu of flowers, the family has requested donations to the Moore Living Centers, 1401 W. Jolly Road, Lansing, MI 48911. The family received friends at the Estes-Leadley Greater Lansing Chapel on Wednesday, October 17, 2001 from 2-4 and 6-8 p.m., with a scripture service at 7:00 p.m. and one hour prior to the service at the church. The funeral was held at 10:00 a.m., Thursday, October 18, 2001 at St. Mary Cathedral.

Freeman, Evelyn Grace
Lansing, MI

Beloved wife and mother, age 66, passed away on August 7, 2002, after a long, courageous battle with cancer. She was born on July 28, 1936 in Pompeii, MI, and has lived in Lansing most of her life. Mrs. Freeman was a member of First Church of the Nazarene, and the Ladies Auxiliary of the VFW. She had been employed as a secretary at the Teamsters Union, Local #580, but most importantly, she was a loving mother and grandmother. Surviving are: her husband, Jack; 3 sons, William (Rebecca) of DeWitt, Randy (Michelle) of Lansing, Doug (Marie) of Victoria, British Columbia; daughter, Sherri (Ray) Freeman-Garza; 9 grandchildren, Amy, Christy, Amanda, Andy, Joanna, Allison, Megan, Gracie and Jack; 2 great grandchildren, Taylor and Zachary; sister-in-law, Marian Garner of Grand Ledge; 2 brothers, Gerald (Von) Garner of DeWitt and Maynard (Judy) Garner of Petoskey; and many loving nieces and nephews. She was preceded in death by: granddaughter, Elisa; parents, James and Esther Garner; and brother, Jim Garner. A funeral service will be held at 11:00 a.m. Saturday, August 10, 2002, at South Church of the Nazarene, 401 W. Holmes Rd, with The Rev. Dr. Harold M. DeMott officiating. Interment will follow in Chapel Hill Memorial Gardens. The family will receive friends at the Estes-Leadley Greater Lansing Chapel from 2-4 and 6-8 p.m. Friday. Memorial contributions may be made to South Church of the Nazarene in memory of Evelyn G. Freeman.

Friar, Jack H.
Dimondale, MI

Born July 16, 1919 in Arkansas. Passed away on March 3, 2003 in Lansing. God has another Angel in Heaven as Jack went to be with his Lord. Jack was loved by all who knew him. He fought for his country in WWII in Normandy at the Battle of the Bulge. He loved the outdoors, fishing, 4-wheeling and snowmobiling. He retired from Fulton Enterprises in 1982. He is survived by: his loving wife of 52 years, Donna; daughter, Patricia Friar of England; brother, Marvin (Juanita) of Lansing; sister, Augusta McKrill of Texas; brother-in-law, Lyle Jenks of WI; and many loving nieces, nephews and friends. He was preceded in death by: his parents, George and Edna Friar; sister, Ora Haynes; in-laws, Fred and Beryl Jenks, and their sons, Ben, R.G., Victor and Robert Jenks. There will be no visitation or funeral service. Arrangements by the Estes-Leadley Greater Lansing Chapel.

Paulson, Richard E.

Lansing, MI

Age 71, passed away May 18, 2003. He was born in Lansing July 23, 1931. A Loving husband, father, wonderful grandfather and good friend beyond compare. Strong willed and outspoken, he expressed his opinion no matter who was around-usually through dry humor. He was a 1949 graduate of Lansing Eastern High School and a Veteran of the Korean Conflict, serving in the U.S. Air Force. He was employed at General Motors (Olds-BOC) from 1955-1986, retiring as a supervisor in the Data Processing Dept. Following his retirement he was associated with Estes-Leadley Funeral Homes for 14 years. Dick was an involved volunteer, having been a PTA President at Wainwright Elementary School; a member of the Community Chest Speaker’s Bureau; former chairman of the Red Cross Disaster Committee; a former Sparrow Hospital volunteer; was active with the Arthritis Foundation and its Speaker’s Bureau; was a member of Box 23 Associates; The Hundred Club; a Lansing Area Safety volunteer; member of the Old Newsboy’s Association; and was a 12 year member and former Chairman of the City of Lansing Board of Fire Commissioners. He was very involved in Boy Scouting, having been Scout Master of Troop #491 at Wainwright School; a Scout District Chairman; a Merit Badge Counselor; an advisor to Explorer Post #421 of the Lansing Fire Dept.; an Order of the Arrow-Vigil Honor Member; and in 1980 was presented with the Silver Beaver Award. Dick was an ardent fisherman, walker, hiker, sailor and photographer. Surviving are his wife of 49 years, Jean; Children, Michael R. (Vickie) Paulson of Brighton, Laura A. (Lee) Hager of Portland, and Steven R. (Mary) Paulson of Highland; 6 Grandchildren, Benjamin and Jordan Hager, Leslie and Sarah Paulson, Erik and Robert Paulson; Niece, Pam (Charlie) Haggarty of New Hampshire; Sister-in-law, Ruth Paulson of Lansing. He was preceded in death by his brother, Robert Paulson. The family will receive friends at a Memorial Visitation from 2-4 and 6-8 p.m. Thursday at the Estes-Leadley Greater Lansing Chapel. In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to: Boy Scout Troop #320; Attn. Larry Rueff; Highland United Methodist Church; 680 W. Livingston Rd.; Highland, MI 48356.

Klein, William J.
Lake, Michigan

(Formerly of Lansing, MI)

Age 70, passed away on July 30, 2003. He was born on June 28, 1933 in New Bremem, New York to Henry Joseph and Marline (Alexander) Klein. Mr. Klein was a veteran of the Korean Conflict, serving in the U.S. Army 82nd Airborne Division and had been employed as a letter carrier for the U.S. Postal Service in Lansing, then as owner/operator of Klein Heating & Air Conditioning. He was a member of Lake, MI Aerie #3761 F.O. Eagles, the Lake Rod & Gun Club and the 82nd Airborne Division Association. He was preceded in death by his parents and son, William J. Klein, II. Surviving are: children, Denise (Robert) Dutter, John “Hank” (Lorie) Klein, Andrea (Jeff) Yancho, Deanna Moore and David Klein; grandchildren, Michelle (Derek DeFord) Klein, Kristopher Klein, Elijah Moore and Charles Yancho; sister, Mary Maples; brother, John (Mary Alice) Klein; nieces and nephews, John Klein, Cathy (Steve) Corey and Susan Klein; and dear friend, Rosie Atasenko. The Funeral Mass will be celebrated at 11:00 a.m. on Friday, August 1, 2003 at St. Casimir Catholic Church, 815 Sparrow Avenue, Lansing, with Fr. Bill Lugger as celebrant. Interment will follow in Deepdale Memorial Gardens. The family will receive friends from 2-4 and 7-9 p.m. on Thursday at the Estes-Leadley Greater Lansing Chapel. In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to the Muscular Dystrophy Association in memory of William J. Klein.

Atayan, Andrew Leon

Lansing, MI

Andy was born in Lansing, MI on July 15, 1969 and passed away on Thursday, June 17, 2004 of natural causes. He was a lifelong resident of Delta Township. Andy was active in charitable endeavors throughout the course of his lifetime. He was a parishioner at St. Paul’s Episcopal Church and was an active participant in the outreach efforts of the congregation. Andy was also a co-founder of the Armenian Resettlement & Refugee Assistance Trust Fund (ARARAT Fund), and was devoted to the betterment of the lives of the beneficiaries of the fund. He also volunteered at the Delta Township Library. Had several work associations, including Michigan School Supply, State of Michigan and Davis Pontiac. He was also actively involved in several model railroading clubs. He was preceded in death by his mother, Virginia Atayan of Delta Township. He is survived by his father, Leon Atayan of Delta Township; his brother Christopher (Rene’) Atayan of Bronxville, NY and Michael Atayan of Delta Township; niece Alina Atayan and a nephew Ara Atayan, both of Bronxville, NY; uncle Theodore (Sonya) Terzian of Lansing; and an aunt Catherine (Hagop) Gabrielian of Geneva, Switzerland; 5 cousins, Ted Terzian, Jr. of Lansing, Paula Schmidt of Lansing, Caroline Gregorides of Paris, France, Tina Armenian of Geneva, Switzerland and Linda Baras of Crans, Switzerland. Andy was a 1989 graduate of Waverly High School and attended Manatee College of Sarasota, FL. A visitation will be held at Estes-Leadley Greater Lansing Chapel, 325 W. Washtenaw St., Lansing, MI from 2-4 and 6-8 p.m. Friday, June 25, 2004 and he will lie-in-state at the Church from 9 a.m. until service time on Saturday. Full choral services will be held at St. Paul’s Episcopal Church, 218 W. Ottawa St., Lansing, MI at 10:00 a.m. Saturday, June 26, 2004, with the Rev. Dr. Gordon Weller officiating. Interment will follow at Deepdale Memorial Gardens. All are welcome to attend a reception that will be held at the Country Club of Lansing following the services. Memorial contributions may be made to St. Paul’s Episcopal Church; the ARARAT Fund; or Sparrow Foundation.
