Paton, Alice F. Grant

East Lansing, MI

Age 98, passed away Aug. 26, 2002. She was born in St. Paul, MN on March 28, 1904 and has lived in East Lansing since 1995. She was very ecumenical, having been a member of the Lansdowne Presbyterian Church in Pennsylvania, the Congregational Church in Toledo, and attended the Burcham Hills Vespers Service. She was extremely proud of earning her teaching degree from the University of Michigan. She was a member of the A.A.U.W.; the U of M Alumni Association; Order of Eastern Star; and various church groups and committees. Surviving are: grandson, David (Nancy) Pike of Lansing; great grandchildren, Jennifer and Andrew. A Memorial Service will be held at 4:00 p.m. Saturday, Sept. 14, 2002 at St. David’s Episcopal Church, 1519 Elmwood Rd, with The Rev. Dr. Gordon Weller officiating. Memorial contributions may be made to St. David’s Episcopal Church Memorial Fund. Arrangements by Estes-Leadley Greater Lansing Chapel.

Cole, Carmen L.

Lansing, MI

Age 45, passed away on Friday, December 14, 2001. She was born on February 15, 1956 in El Guayabo, Venezuela, the daughter of Manuel Segundo Valbuena Torres and Alecia del Carmen Rincon de Valbuena. She enjoyed cooking, gardening, shopping, cheering for the Lansing Lugnuts, being with her family, enjoying life and was employed by Jalapeno's Restaurant where she was a manager. She is survived by: daughters, Melissa and Stephanie Cole; parents, Manuel Valbuena and Alecia Rincon; sisters, Elizabeth Valbuena, Luz Marina Valbuena de Diaz, Alecita and Mary Valbuena; brothers, Ramon, Duglas and Carlos Valbuena; cousin, Fanny "Veva" (Michael) Wenzel and their son, Jacob of Lansing; as well as several other relatives in Venezuela; special friend, Greg Cole of Lansing; sisters-in-law, Connie Murray (Clair) and their son, Joshua of Lansing, Robyn (Joe) Mrozinski and god-daughter, Alexis Mrozinski of Grand Ledge and Jaime Cole (George) of Colorado; brother-in-law, Douglas (Kelli) Cole of Lansing; parents-in-law, Louie and Sandy Zoeller; and special friends, Eva and Juan Cruz, Lupe and Jose Aquilar, Martha Sanchez, Adrian and Erika Lopez, Pedro Jaramillo and Luis and Felita Ramirez. The funeral mass will be celebrated by The Rev. Fr. Frederick L. Thelen, at 1:00 p.m., Tuesday, December 18, 2001, at Cristo Rey Catholic Church, 201 W. Miller Rd. with the rite of interment in St. Joseph Catholic Cemetery. The family will receive friends at the Estes-Leadley Greater Lansing Chapel from 2-4 p.m., Sunday and from 12-2 and 6-8 p.m. Monday, with a Rosary at 7:00 p.m. Memorial contributions may be made to the Melissa & Stephanie Cole Education fund.

Dodge, Marian "Cookie" (O'Brien)

Lansing, MI

Marian "Cookie" (O'Brien) Dodge died suddenly at home on June 22, 2002. She is with her Lord and Savior now. Cookie was born June 19, 1945 in Columbus, Ohio the daughter of William and Rose (Fagan) O'Brien. She is survived by her husband of 28 years, Terry, two beloved sons, Travis and Paul both of Lansing, sisters Sally (Dave) Daugherty of Bridgeport, Nancy (Ray) Penner, Judy Kovera, Billie (Jerry) McKouen, sister-in-law Carol Ann Sharp all of Lansing, very dear cousin Marian Ferguson of Columbus, Ohio, aunt Harriet Baxter of Grove City, Ohio and many nieces and nephews who loved her dearly. Cookie had many friends, including a special family friend, Michael Cady of North Carolina. She was a 1964 graduate of Gabriels Catholic High School and was an employee of Lansing Public Schools, Pattengill food service for several years. She loved her family, loved to play bingo, and blessed everyone she ever met. Funeral Mass was celebrated 12:00 p.m. (noon) Wednesday, June 26, 2002 at the Church of the Resurrection. Rite of Christian Burial was at East Lawn Memory Gardens. The family received friends 2-4 and 7-9 p.m. Tuesday at the Estes-Leadley Greater Lansing Chapel with a Rosary being prayed at 7:30 p.m. Memorials may be made to St. Vincent DePaul Society of Lansing in Cookie's memory. Until we meet again, may God hold you in the palm of his hand.

Moore, Jessie

Holt, MI

Age 97, passed away on June 3, 2002 in Mt. Pleasant. She was born on March 7, 1905 in Leeds, England, and has lived in the Holt/Lansing area since 1925. Mrs. Moore attended St. Michaels Episcopal Church, and was an avid collector of many items. She was preceded in death by her husband, James "Bob" Moore in 1966, and by a son, William R. Moore in 1989. Surviving are: 2 sons, D. Ray (Bernice) Moore of Palm Beach, FL and R. Jack (Jeanne) Moore of Littlefield Lake, MI; daughter, Jessie Robetta (Steve) Appleton of Las Vegas, NV; daughter-in-law, Mildred R. Moore of Dansville; 10 grandchildren and many great grandchildren and great-great grandchildren. A funeral service will be held at 1:00 p.m. Wednesday, June 5, 2002, at the Estes-Leadley Holt/Delhi Chapel, with The Rev. Beverly Fico Brown officiating. The family will receive friends at the funeral home from 11:30 a.m. until service time on Wednesday. Memorial contributions may be made to the American Heart Association or the American Lung Association in memory of Jessie Moore.

Black, Rosemarie I. "Granny"

Lansing, MI

Age 71, passed away on Friday, January 25, 2002 after fighting a very long and courageous battle with cancer. Rosemarie was born in Berlin, Germany on May 28, 1930 and moved to Lansing in 1953, where she has been a resident for the last 49 years. She was a retiree of General Motors and was member of U.A.W. Local #652. She will be greatly missed by the many people she has touched throughout her life. She leaves behind: brother, Herbert Elstermann of Berlin, Germany; her loving daughter, Barbara (Ken Miller) Arce; two granddaughters, Lisa (Mark) Wohlscheid and Tina (Tony, Jr.) Villarreal; and great grandchildren, Mercedes Olivia Villarreal, John Edward Wohlscheid, Tony Villarreal, III and Mark Wohlscheid, Jr. Funeral services were held at 1:00 p.m., on Tuesday, January 29, 2002 at the Estes-Leadley Greater Lansing Chapel. Interment was in Chapel Hill Memorial Gardens. The family received friends from 2-4 p.m., on Sunday, January 27, 2002 and from 2-4 and 6-8 p.m., on Monday, January 28, 2002. Memorial contributions may be made to Hospice House of Mid-Michigan.

Kittel, Rose C.

Lansing

Age 94, passed away on May 7, 2003. She was born on March 1, 1909, in New Orleans, LA and lived in the Lansing area most of her life. Mrs. Kittel, along with her husband, J.T., owned and operated J.P. Kittle Insurance Agency. She was also a real estate broker, and had worked at The Style Shop in Lansing. She enjoyed going to the Kentucky Derby, making the trip every year. She also enjoyed gambling and boating. In 1961, her husband preceded her in death. She was also preceded in death by step-daughter, Dawn Warner and grandson, Robin Warner. Surviving are: niece, Marie (Bud) Franzoi of Vineland, NJ; step-grandchildren, Sue Otterman, Merle Warner, Jillane Able and Bret Warner; several step-great grandchildren; several nieces and nephews; special friends, Vicky Symons and Barbara and Neil McLean. The family wishes to express a special thanks to the staff of East Lansing Healthcare Center for their kind and compassionate care, and also to Dr. Robert McElmurry for his special attention. A graveside service will be held at 2:00 p.m. Friday, May 9, 2003, at Deepdale Memorial Gardens. Memorial contributions may be made to East Lansing Healthcare Center. Arrangements by the Estes-Leadley Greater Lansing Chapel.

Conn, Angie M.

Lansing, MI

Age 94, passed away on December 5, 2002. She was born on February 15, 1908 in Mill City, Oregon to Sidney and Maude (Price) Coolman. They moved to Michigan and she was raised in Scotville and Ludington, MI. She attended County Normal College, where she received her lifetime teaching certificate and taught school in Walhalla, MI in 1929. She also attended Eastern Michigan College in 1930 and 1931, and then moved to Lansing, where she acquired a teaching position with the Lansing School System. Angie taught elementary school at Main Street, Everett, Maplewood and Averill Schools, where she retired in 1973. She was a member of the Retired Teachers Association; and worked as a Sparrow Hospital Volunteer for many years. Angie married F. Arnold Conn of Lansing in 1935 and he preceded her in death in 1990. Angie will be lovingly remembered by everyone who knew her for her indominable spirit and her love of teaching young children. She is survived by: children, Arnold S. (Joanne) Conn, Larry G. (Sheena) Conn, Alan L. (Vi) Conn, all of Lansing, Martha J. (Larry) Hoover of Huntsville, TX and Mary E. Ring of Bradenton, FL; 12 grandchildren; 15 great grandchildren; and 3 great great grandchildren. Angie was devoted to her family and will be sadly missed by all of them. Funeral services will be held at 2:00 p.m. on Saturday, December 7, 2002 at the Estes-Leadley Greater Lansing Chapel, with Pastor Steven Barkey officiating. Interment will follow in Delta Hillside Cemetery. The family will receive friends from 2-4 and 6-8 p.m. on Friday at the funeral home. In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to a charity of one’s choice.

Emmons, Nellie L.

Holt, Michigan

Age 80, passed away on September 4, 2003. She was born on April 28, 1923 in Colbert County, Alabama, and has lived in Holt most of her life. She was a member of the Church of Christ. Surviving are: her husband of 60 years, Wallace; 2 daughters, Sandra Bregenzer of Holt, and Carolyn Churchill of Grand Ledge; son, Micheal (Sandra) Emmons of Haslett; 7 grandchildren; 7 great grandchildren; sister, Beulah Willis of Lakeland, FL. She was preceded in death by several brothers and sisters. Funeral services will be held at 2:00 p.m. Monday, September 8, 2003, at the Estes-Leadley Holt/Delhi Chapel, with interment in East Lawn Memory Gardens. The family will receive friends at the funeral home from 2-4 p.m. Sunday. In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to the American Cancer Society, or to the National Kidney Foundation in memory of Nellie Emmons.
