Silk, Leonard P.
East Lansing, MI
Age 85, died Sunday, May 5, 2002. He was born in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania, on March 7, 1917, the son of Samuel Hyman Silk and Agnes Silk. His mother died in 1920, and he moved to South Bend, Indiana, where he was raised by his grandmother, Cecelia Schwartz. He married Dorothy Roth of South Bend on Thanksgiving Day, 1942. Their sons, Spencer and Jim were born in South Bend. The family moved to Lansing in 1955 and East Lansing in 1959. Leonard was an automotive engineer and worked at Studebaker Motors in South Bend for 17 years. He was especially proud of his involvement in the design of the award-winning 1953 Studebaker and, in his retirement, lovingly restored "the Studebaker" that had been the family car 40 years before. After moving to Michigan, he worked as an engineer at Oldsmobile until his retirement in 1982. After a retirement of less that a year, he returned to work at General Motors and continued his career as an engineer for another 15 years. In retirement, he enjoyed travel with his wife and spending time with his grandchildren. He belonged to the Studebaker Drivers Club and the Lansing Chapter of the Veteran Motor Club of America. He was an avid skier. He learned to ski when he was 50 and, until his illness, a high point of every year was an annual group trip to ski in the Rocky Mountains. He loved children. For several years, as a volunteer, he taught blind children to ski at the Lansing Ski Club. After his retirement, he tutored children at the Sheridan Road Elementary School, in Lansing, through Literacy Volunteers. Most of all, he was recognized by all who knew him as an extraordinary father and grandfather. He was a member of Congregational Shaarey Zedek in Lansing. He is survived by his wife of 59 years, Dorothy Silk; his sons and daughter-in-law, Spencer A. Silk of Bloomfield Hills and James J. and Jean V. Silk of New Haven, Connecticut; and his grandchildren, Stephanie, Jonah, Stephen and Kira. Funeral services will be held at 1:00 p.m., on Tuesday, May 7, 2002 at Congregation Shaarey Zedek, at 1924 Coolidge Road, Lansing, with Rabbi Morton Hoffman presiding. Burial will be at Evergreen Cemetery, Lansing. Memorial contributions may be made to Literacy Volunteers, the Breslin Cancer Center in Lansing, or Congregation Shaarey Zedek.
Walley, Helen R.
Lansing, MI
Age 85, passed away on Thursday, April 18, 2002. She was born on January 12, 1917 in Lansing, the daughter of Albert and Mary Elizabeth (Kramps) Straub. She retired from Oldsmobile after 31 years. Helen loved to bowl and was one of the areas top bowlers, loved bingo, was a member of the 39er's and their basketball league and played softball for Oldsmobile during the war. She was preceded in death by: her first husband, Maurice Klein; and step-son, Robert E. Walley; and 2 brothers and 2 sisters. She is survived by: her husband of 37 years, Robert A. Walley; daughters, Patricia (Roy) Rohrbacher and Cheryl Dolezal; son, Jerry (M'lissa) Walley, numerous grandchildren, great grandchildren and great great grandchildren; and many nieces and nephews. A funeral mass was held at 11:00 a.m., Saturday, April 20, 2002 at St. Casmir Catholic Church with Fr. Bill Lugger as celebrant. Interment followed in St. Joseph Catholic Cemetery. The family received friends from 7-9 p.m., on Friday, April 19, 2002 where the rosary was recited at 7:30 p.m., at the Estes-Leadley Greater Lansing Chapel and one hour prior to the service at the church. Memorial contributions may be made to the Alzheimer's Association.
Anderson, Ronald L.
Holt, MI
Age 62, passed away on February 5, 2003. He was born in Mt. Pleasant, MI on July 30, 1940, and has been a resident of the Lansing area since 1964. Mr. Anderson has been employed at General Motors since 1965. Surviving are: 2 daughters, Renae Wright of Holt and Rebekah Anderson of Mason; 2 sons, Michael (Teresa) Anderson of Pewamo and Mark (Bethany) Anderson of Lansing; 6 grandchildren; 2 sisters; and 6 brothers. A funeral service will be held at 12:00 noon on Saturday, February 8, 2003 at the Estes-Leadley Holt/Delhi Chapel with the Rev. Ried Martin officiating. Interment will follow at Maple Ridge Cemetery. The family will receive friends at the funeral home from 2-4 and 7-9 p.m. on Friday.
Luther J. Flanagan
Luther Jackson Flanagan was born August 4, 1927 the fifth child of Ida Mae (Whigham) and Johnson Alexander Flanagan, Sr. He spent his youth in Detroit, attended Northern High School and was a graduate of Albion College with B.A. degree in liberal arts in 1955. He married Rita Tucker in Battle Creek in 1952. Luther devoted his life to helping others and was a lifelong voice for social justice. He began his career with the Children’s Aid Society, then worked as a Wayne County Probation Officer. In 1966, he began working for Oakland County’s Office of Economic Opportunity Anti-poverty program and was promoted to Deputy Director. During this period, Luther and family lived in Highland Park, Michigan and he was greatly involved in the community. This included working with the Massachusetts Improvement Association and Citizens for Better Schools. These organizations were instrumental in stopping de facto segregation and improving the education for all of the city’s children. He was an elder of Highland Park Presbyterian Church, sang in the choir with a beautiful baritone voice, and worked with the church to build housing for low-income families. In 1969 he began working with the State of Michigan, Department of Labor and relocated his family to Lansing, Michigan. Later in life he worked for a Community Action Agency in Wayne County. Luther continued his community activism in Lansing and after retirement he worked closely with the planning and construction of Oldsmobile Park as well as facilitating Dialogue Circles on Racism with the Lansing Police Department and other agencies. Luther’s hobbies and interests included photography, jazz, and working in the yard. He was the ultimate “fixer upper”, always willing to help family and friends with projects. Luther is survived by Rita, his wife of 51 years and four children, Laura (Eugene) Sawyer, Johnson A. (Linda D.), Linda M., and James (Diane) Flanagan. He is also survived by 14 grandchildren, two great-grandchildren, his sister Ida Mae Jones, brother Douglas, and many nieces and nephews. His brothers Johnson (Sonny), Harvey, and Tommy preceded him in death. Throughout his life, Luther was an example of integrity, industriousness, and a man who worked to right the wrongs he saw in the world.
He proved that one person can make a difference in the lives of others.
Kinney, Wayne C.
Lansing, MI
Age 80, went to be with his Lord on August 17, 2001. Mr. Kinney is survived by: his wife, Fleta of 59 years; one daughter, Rita (James) Riggle of Onondaga; three sons, Curtis (Jackie) Kinney, Dennis Kinney, and Darrell (Debi) Kinney all of Lansing; 10 Grandchildren; 10 Great Grandchildren; 2 Great Great Granddaughters; many Nieces and Nephews; special Brother-in-law, Robert Curtis and sister-in-law, Marion Curtis. Mr Kinney was preceded in death by: his father, Virgil Kinney; his mother, Hazel Kinney; sisters, Elaine Roy and Wanda Gluich. Wayne was a very caring person who always put others before himself and loved his Lord and Savior. Mr. Kinney was a member of the Kendon Drive Church Of The Nazarene, a Veteran of WWII and a recipient of the Silver Star and 2 medals of bravery from the French. A funeral service was held at 11:00 a.m. Tuesday, August 21, 2001, at Kendon Drive Church Of The Nazarene, 711 Kendon Drive in Lansing, with the Rev. Tom Luttrell officiating. The family received friends from 2-4 p.m. and 6-8 p.m. Monday at the Estes-Leadley Greater Lansing Chapel. Interment followed in Deepdale Cemetery. Those who wish may make memorial contributions to Hospice House of Lansing or Kendon Drive Church Of The Nazarene.
Walkington, Pauline J. "Polly"
Mason, MI
Age 74, passed away on November 1, 2002. She was born on April 30, 1928 in Lansing, and has lived in the Lansing area all of her life. Mrs. Walkington had been employed at First of America Bank as a teller for many years. She was preceded in death by her husband, Russell in 1998, and by her son, Daniel in 1993. Surviving are: daughter, Patricia (Douglas) Wightman of Mason; son, Michael Walkington of Grand Rapids; 4 grandchildren, Cliff and Kevin (Teressa) Walkington, Adam (Michelle) and Amy Wightman; 2 great grandchildren, McKenzie Walkington and Cole Wightman; sister, Winifred (Lloyd) Flessner of Lakeland, FL. The family wishes to express a special thanks to those who slowed support and provided comfort during her illness. Funeral services will be held at 11:00 a.m. Monday, November 4, 2002, at Holt United Methodist Church, 2321 N. Aurelius Rd., with The Rev. Lynn Grimes officiating. Interment will follow in East Lawn Memory Gardens. The family will receive friends at the Estes-Leadley Holt/Delhi Chapel from 2-4 and 6-8 p.m. Sunday. Age 90, passed away on February 13, 2004. She was born on June 21, 1913 in Lansing, MI, the daughter of Adolph and Carolina (Hein) Janetzke. Elizabeth was a charter member of Our Savior Lutheran Church in Lansing and a past member of Emmanuel Lutheran Church in Cadillac, MI. She was preceded in death by her husband Donald, in 1998. Surviving are: 4 daughters, Linda (John) Lehman of Charlotte, Janet (Edward) Clark of Holt, Martha (Steve) Carpenter of Nashville, and Frances (Donald) Brown of South Bordman; 6 grandchildren; 8 great-grandchildren; brother, Arthur (Clara) Janetzke of Northville; 2 sister-in-laws, Eileen Schmuck of Battle Creek and Eileen Janetzke and many nieces and nephews. Funeral Services will be held at 12:00 noon on Wednesday, February 18, 2004 at Our Savior Lutheran Church, 1601 W. Holmes Road, Holt MI, with the Pastor David P.E. Maier officiating. The family will receive visitors from 6 to 8 p.m. on Tuesday at the Estes-Leadley Holt/Delhi Chapel and also one hour prior to the service on Wednesday at the church. Contributions may be made to Hospice of Lansing or The Lutheran Hour in memory of Elizabeth Anderson. Envelopes will be available at the funeral home.

Age 85, passed away on Sunday, June 23, 2002. He was born on December 25, 1916 in Lansing, the son of William H. and Margaret L. (Allen) Dahlberg. He graduated from Michigan State University with a B.S. in Engineering and worked for Hillsdale Tool and also served on their Board of Directors for many years. He was a lieutenant in the U.S. Navy during WWII. Mr. Dahlberg was a lifelong member of Pilgrim Congregational Church; served on the Michigan Children's Aid Committee; and was an honorary member of the Country Club of Lansing. He was preceded in death by: his parents; and infant son, Thomas. He is survived by: his wife of 61 years, Ruth; daughters, Julianne Dahlberg Stark of East Lansing and Mary (Charles) Jackson of Lake Forest, IL; grandchildren, Kristen (Andrew) Astley, Kathryn (Jason) Zbanek, Zachary, Caroline and Sally Jackson; and great grandchildren, Benjamin and Maggie Astley. Funeral services were held at 12:00 p.m., on Monday, July 1, 2002 at the Estes-Leadley Greater Lansing Chapel with the Rev. Dr. James E. Robinson officiating. Interment followed in Mt. Hope Cemetery. The family received friends from 6-8 p.m., on Sunday, June 30, 2002 at the funeral home. Memorial contributions may be made to the American Cancer Society; the Sparrow Foundation; or to a charity of one's choice.
