Sanders, Dorothy

Holt, MI

Age 85 passed away on August 4, 2002. She was born on March 16, 1917 in Delhi Township to Herman and Alvina (Schuster) Horstmyer. Dorothy worked as a registered nurse for 10 years. She was a member of the Holt United Methodist Church, the United Methodist Women's Group and Body & Soul Group. Surviving are her; daughter, Mary Sanders of Nevada; son, Douglas C. and Ellen Sanders, Ph.D. of North Carolina; 4 grandchildren, Erika Sanders, Kristin Sanders, Joshua Monthei and Jeffery Monthei; 4 sisters, Margaret Leonard, Elsie Kahres, Helen (Robert) Ried and Anna Richards and many nieces and nephews. Dorothy was preceded in death by her husband, Charles S. Sanders and one son, William David Sanders, Ph.D. A funeral service will be held at 11:00 a.m. on Thursday, August 8, 2002 at the Holt United Methodist Church, 2321 N. Aurelius, with the Revs. Lynn Grimes and Joseph D. Huston officiating. Interment will follow in Markham Cemetery. The family will receive visitors at the Estes-Leadley Holt/Delhi Chapel from 2-4 and 7-9 p.m. on Wednesday. For those who wish, memorials may be given to the Holt United Methodist Church in memory of Dorothy.

Kinney, Carl J.

Holt, MI

Age 73, passed away Sunday, October 7, 2001. He was born on October 31, 1927 in Lansing, the son of Carl & Hazel (Woodman) Kinney, Sr. Carl was a 34-year member of the Teamsters Union, retiring from Standard Block & Supply Co. of Lansing. He had received several professional safe-driving awards from the Lansing ARCA Safety Council. He loved fishing, deer hunting, landscaping and giving to others. He is survived by: sons, Douglas C. (Jan) Kinney of Lansing, and Steven G. Kinney of Charlotte; daughter, Lauralie A. (Thomas) Oding of Highland, IL; 2 sisters; 13 grandchildren; and 4 great grandchildren. He was preceded in death by his parents, wife and 2 brothers. Funeral services were held at 1:30 p.m., on Thursday, October 11, 2001 at the funeral home with the Rev. William W. Barber officiating. Interment will follow at Chapel Hill Memorial Gardens. The family will receive friends from 2-4 and 6-8 p.m., at the funeral home on Wednesday, October 10, 2001. Memorial contributions may be made to the American Lung Association in Carl's memory.

Eby, Zetta L.

Lansing, MI

Age 91, passed away on Wednesday, October 23, 2002. She was born in Gratiot County on March 20, 1911, the daughter of Henry and Mary Zoss. She came to Lansing in 1929 to work for the State Health Department. She eventually transferred to the State Retirement System and retired from there in 1981 as an insurance executive. Since retirement she held the position of Insurance Liaison Officer for both the Lansing SERA (State Employee Retirees Association) Chapter and the Michigan (SERA) Council. She was a member of the Board of Directors of the Lansing Chapter, membership chair of the coordinating council, and held a lifetime membership in the Lansing SERA Chapter. She was preceded in death by her husband, F. Eugene Eby. Surviving is her son, the Rev. Dn. John Eby of Bronxville, NY and many nieces and nephews. The burial service will be conducted by Fr. Andrew Yavornitzky of St. Mark Orthodox Church in Rochester Hills. The service will be held at 10:00 a.m. on Friday, October 25, 2002 at the Estes-Leadley Greater Lansing Chapel. Interment will follow at North Star Cemetery in Gratiot County. The family will receive friends at the funeral home on Thursday from 2-4 and 6-8 p.m. Those who wish may make memorial contributions, in loving memory of Zetta, to the Multiple Sclerosis Society.

Parks, Thelma E.
Lansing, MI
Age 78, passed away on Tuesday, April 15, 2003. She is survived by her husband of 35 years, Rodney Parks; 2 sons and one daughter and their spouses; 5 grandchildren; 5 great-grandchildren and several nieces and nephews. Funeral services will be held at 2:00 p.m. on Friday, April 18, 2003 at the Estes-Leadley Holt/Delhi Chapel, with the Rev. Stephen Ezop officiating. The family will receive visitors from 1:00 p.m. until service time at the funeral home. Memorial contributions may be given to Heartland Hospice in memory of Thelma.

Abood, Fredric S.

Lansing, MI

Born June 8, 1928, at home on Williams Street, Lansing, Michigan, Fred was a lifelong Lansing resident. He was a graduate of St. Mary High School. He earned his bachelor’s degree at the University of Nebraska at Kearney, Nebraska; there he met is future wife, Patricia L. Asher. He left Nebraska to attend the University of Notre Dame Law School, but returned to Nebraska to be married, and he finished his law studies at Creighton University. Returning to Michigan, upon graduation, he worked for the Attorney General’s office and with a family of 6, soon to be 7, he left his salaried position with the State to fulfill his dream of his law office in the Bank of Lansing Building, later moving to 117 East Allegan in Lansing. In the years to come, he was joined by his brother, Camille, then his brother, Richard. A generation later, he happily welcomed his sons Joe, Jeffrey, Jim, Andrew, and Jerome, his daughters, Teresa and Ellen, to the profession he loved. Fred’s desire to become a lawyer dated to early childhood. He never lost his sense of privilege at being able to represent a fellow human being; and was passionate in his belief that to serve in any small way in the pursuit of truth and justice was high honor. There was that in him that bounded at opposition. In his frequent role of defending the unpopular case, or the minority view, he welcomed the occasion to plead for open mindedness, creativity of thought, tolerance of human frailty, and love of justice and truth. “I may hate the sin but never the sinner” was a favorite quotation from his hero, Clarence Darrow. Mr. Abood was proud of his Lebanese heritage and of the examples of courage and generosity set for him by his Lebanese-immigrant parents. He enjoyed his family-and in food; all were welcome at his home. He never tired of grocery shopping and cooking-in order to enjoy serving all who came. He was preceded in death by his father, Samuel Abood; his mother, Nabeha Fawaz Abood, his step-mother, Sarah Deeb Abood, his sister, Helen Abood Nama, his brother, Hannibal Abood, and his brother, Camille S. Abood. He is survived by his wife, Patricia L. Abood, his five sons, Joseph (Elaine), Grand Ledge, Jeffrey, East Lansing, James, Lansing, Andrew (Patricia), Okemos, and Jerome (Heather), of Lansing; and five daughters, Mary (Keith) Carlson, Denver, CO, Teresa (John) Hoffman, Key Biscayne, FL, Catherine (Rakshat) Mohil, Lansing, Margaret (Vincent) Barile, Okemos, and Ellen (Paul J.) McCabe, Denver, CO. His is also survived by 26 grandchildren, one sister, Hilda Kelush-Abood, Okemos, and his brother, Richard Abood, Lansing. The family will receive friends on Wednesday, August 18, 2004 at Mr. Abood's residence, 1485 Cambridge Road, Lansing, from 2-4 and 6-8 p.m. with Prayers at 7:00 p.m. The Memorial Mass will be celebrated by Rev. Mgsr. Robert D. Lundsford at St. Mary Cathedral, 219 E. Seymour St., Lansing on Thursday, August 19, 2004 at 10:00 a.m., with a luncheon to follow in the St. Mary Cathedral Hall. Donations may be made in lieu of flowers to St. Mary Cathedral or to Ingham Regional Medical Center.

Economas-Underwood, Faye
April 17, 1947 – March 6, 2005
Our beloved Faye Economas-Underwood left this earth surrounded by her loving family on March 6, 2005, after a courageous 10-year battle with cancer. The loss of Faye will surely leave a deep void for all who knew her. She is survived by her loving husband of 25 years, Robert, her four step-children, Karen (James) Peaney, Ellen (Nathan Maher) Underwood, Tom (Penny) Underwood, and Tim (Jeanne Ann) Underwood, and her father, Leo Economas. Faye was adored by her seven grandchildren, Cori Jean Black, Brandon and Elise Peaney, Lance, Hannah, Adam and Nicholas Underwood, and by her cousin, Tasia Chagetas and dear friend, Susan Hagen. Also survived by many cousins, aunts, uncles, nieces and nephews, Faye was preceded in death by her mother, Helen Economas. For as much as Faye will be missed, however, she will be remembered by friends and family for her wit, good humor, unending spirit, and gracious love. Faye celebrated life each and every day, with unending enthusiasm, and positive thought. her unflagging Greek Orthodox faith sustained her throughout her life and gave added meaning to her relationships with family and friends. We will continue to celebrate Faye as she will always remain in our hearts, our thoughts and our lives. She received a bachelor’s degree from the University of Long Island South Hampton and a master’s degree in student personnel from Indiana University. Before coming to live in Michigan in 1979, Faye worked in student housing at the University of Maryland and Montclair State University in New Jersey. Faye is a member of Holy Trinity Greek Orthodox Church in Lansing, Michigan and also The Traverse City Orthodox Mission Church. She retired from the State of Michigan in 1997, and subsequently spent many hours volunteering for the American Red Cross. The funeral service will be held at 10:00 a.m. on Friday, March 11, 2005 at Holy Trinity Greek Orthodox Church, 1701 E. Saginaw Street, Lansing, with The Rev. Dr. Mark Sietsema and Fr. Nectarios Rozadilla officiating. Interment will follow at Deepdale Memorial Gardens. The family will receive friends from 2-4 and 6-8 p.m. at the Estes-Leadley Greater Lansing Chapel on Thursday, where the Trisagion will be held at 7:00 p.m. In lieu of flowers, we request that donations be made in memory of Faye to Munson Health Care Regional Foundation, Oncology Department, 1105 Sixth Street, Traverse City, MI 49684 or The Traverse City Orthodox Mission Church, 12935 W. Eddie, Warren C. “Bus”

Lansing, MI

Age 90, passed away on October 27, 2003. He was born in Lansing on March 23, 1913 the son of James Thomas Prentiss and Vena May Eddie. He graduated from Lansing Schools and attended Michigan State University, where he was a member of Pershing Rifles and was a graduate of Northwestern University Traffic Institute. He joined the Lansing Police Department in 1937, retiring in 1973 as Deputy Chief. He was head of Traffic Division LPD, when they won the “Flame of Life” trophy for safest city in the U.S. After retiring from LPD, he spent 17 years with FEMA (Federal Emergency Management Agency) as a special disaster agent. Warren was a member of Lansing Chapter DeMoley and Michigan National Guard 119th Field Artillary. He was also a member of the Michigan Police Chiefs Association, a life member of Central Michigan Law Enforcement, a member of Governor Romney’s Traffic Safety Commission, a life member of Lansing Masonic Lodge #33, a member of People’s Church, and a member of the Lansing Lions Club. Warren loved the outdoors and spending time at the family cottage and hunting and fishing at Durkee Lake, Fairview, MI. Warren loved his family, especially his grandchildren, Matthew Eddie, Allison (Kiet) Tran, Kate Purvis (Wade Burch), Jacob Purvis, Christopher Eddie (Tracy Rizzo), and Phillip Eddie, who all survive him. Also surviving are: his beloved wife, Ruth (Troyer), whom he married on June 18, 1938; children, Mary (David) Purvis, Kim Warren (Karen) Eddie and Laird Eddie (Karen Dresser); and step-grandchildren, Elbert, Nicholas (Wendy), and Jeffrey (Jody), Meredith Lyon, Amy Purvis (Thomas Doan) and Adam (Becky) Purvis. He was preceded in death by: his parents; and brothers, Hazen and Earl Gardner. The family would like to extend a special thanks to the Dialysis Unit at St. Lawrence Campus, Sparrow Hospital. Funeral services will be held at 1:00 p.m. on Friday, October 31, 2003 at The Peoples Church of East Lansing, 200 W. Grand River Ave., East Lansing, with the Rev. Dr. Harry Johnson officiating. Interment will follow in Mt. Hope Cemetery. The family will receive friends from 2-4 and 6-8 p.m. on Thursday at the Estes-Leadley Greater Lansing Chapel. If desired, in lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to The Peoples Church of East Lansing, Endowment Fund or the Renal Dialysis Unit at St. Lawrence or to a charity of one’s choice in memory of Warren C. Eddie.

Monroe, Leah M.

Lansing, MI

Age 100, passed away December 14, 2001, born on August 9, 1901 She married L. Z. Monroe in 1922 and they shared 68 years of marriage before he passed away in 1990. Leah worked for two attorneys in Pontiac, MI for several years and retired along with her husband to Port Richey, FL in 1966. She returned to the Lansing area in 1993 to live with her sister, Doris Nicholas since that time. Along with her sister, Leah is survived by one nephew and several nieces. Also preceding her in death are her son, Robert Monroe and brother, Kenneth Phares. A funeral service will be offered at 2:30 p.m. on Tuesday, December 18, 2001 at the Estes-Leadley Greater Lansing Chapel, with The Rev. William Barber of Grace Bible Church officiating. Interment will be in White Chapel Cemetery in Troy, MI. The family will receive visitors from 6 to 8 p.m. on Monday at the funeral home. Contributions may be given to the Salvation Army in Leah's Memory.
