Age 80, passed away on Tuesday, May 07, 2002. He was born on August 12, 1921 in Petoskey, MI, the son of Daniel J. and Marie (McGary) Carmody. He was a veteran of WWII where he served in the U.S. Navy on the aircraft carrier U.S.S. Cabot and he retired in 1980 from Oldsmobile Plant #3 after 40 years as a toolmaker/supervisor. He is survived by: his wife of 60 years, Edith Carmody of Potterville; his 8 children, Shirly (Keith) Eldred of Charlotte, Cynthia (Robert) Hendler of Rochester, NY, Beverly (John) Gross of St. Johns, Daniel (Sharon) Carmody of Chandler, AZ, Alicia (August) Vorndran of Webster, NY, Kevin (Debbie) Carmody of Eaton Rapids, Teresa (Jeff) Klanecky of Grand Ledge, and Gail (Steve) Smith of Cedarville, MI; 21 grandchildren; 18 great grandchildren; 6 great great grandchildren; sister, Marjorie Cox of Charlotte; and several nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by: brother, John Carmody; and sister, Anna Holliday. Funeral services will be held at 10:00 a.m., Friday, May 10, 2002 at Potterville United Methodist Church, 105 N. Church Street, Potterville, with Pastor Tom Peters officiating. The family will receive friends from 2-4 and 6-8 p.m., Thursday, May 9, 2002 at the Estes-Leadley Greater Lansing Chapel. In recognition of his lifelong support of children and their needs, the family asks that in lieu of flowers, memorial contributions be made to St. Vincent's Home for Children, 2800 W. Willow Street, Lansing, MI 48917.
Foxall, Mattie L.

Mattie began her journey of peace on Sunday, February 24, 2002. She was born on September 5, 1919 in Hadley, Georgia to Willie and Carrie Cullers. Mattie retired from Jacobson's store after 27 years. She was a member of the Socialites Club all of her adult life, and was one of the founding mothers of the Les Meres et Debutante. She was preceded in death by her parents; sister, Mary; 2 brothers, William and John. Surviving are: her daughter, Faye (Henry) Shine; grandson, Kenneth White of Lansing; sister, Katherine Harrell of Detroit; 2 sisters-in-law, Dorothy and Geneva Cullers; several nieces, nephews, cousins, friends and 3 very special friends, Mattie Taylor, Rosemary Reed and L'Marie Peaz'. A memorial service was held at Bethlehem Temple, 1518 W. Washington Avenue, Lansing, on Thursday, February 28, 2002 at 1:00 p.m. Contributions may be made to the American Lung Association.
Sawyer, Fern A.

Age 98, passed away on Friday, January 11, 2002. She was born on January 1, 1904 in Lansing, and has been a life long resident of this area. Mrs. Sawyer was a member of Mt. Hope United Methodist Church for 76 years. She loved her family, was an accomplished seamstress and enjoyed growing flowers around her home. She was preceded in death by her husband, Emory L. Sawyer on February 15, 1974, and by a sister and a brother. Surviving are: son, Alan E. (Marian) Sawyer of Lansing; 5 grandchildren, Gail, Gary, Gregg, Glenn and Geannine; 9 great grandchildren, Matthew, Robert, Haley, Tyler, Jeremy, Gabriel, Brandon, Dylan and Ethan. A funeral service was held at 2:30 p.m., on Monday, January 14, 2002 at the Estes-Leadley Greater Lansing Chapel, with the Rev. Pam Mathieu officiating. Interment was in Deepdale Memorial Gardens. The family received friends at the funeral home from 1:30 p.m., until service time on Monday. In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to the charity of one's choice, in memory of Fern A. Sawyer.

Age 52, passed away on June 26, 2002. He was born on December 5, 1949 in Lansing, MI the son of L.D. and Patricia (Cornelius) Langtry. He is survived by: mother, Patricia Langtry; brothers, Steven (Risa) Langtry, Michael Langtry and Robert Langtry; and grandmother, Hilda Blackford. Funeral services were held at 4:00 p.m., on Saturday, June 29, 2002 at the Estes-Leadley Holt/Delhi Chapel. The family received friends from 6-9 p.m., on Friday, June 28, 2002 at the funeral home. Kies, Margaret (Williams) “Peg”
Lansing, MI
Age 82, passed away on September 22, 2002. Mrs. Kies was born in Winnipeg, Canada on March 13, 1920. She was the daughter of David J. and Hannah K. Williams. She was preceded in death by her husband of 25 years, Jerry H.; 2 brothers, David and Arthur Williams. Surviving are: her son, Merrill of Marcellus, MI; sister-in-law, Pauline Kies; 2 nieces and 4 nephews. Peg was a registered nurse for 20 years. She was a graduate of Evanston Hospital in Illinois, and the University of Michigan, and was an Army nurse in WWII. A funeral mass will be held at 2:00 p.m. Thursday, September 26, 2002, at St. Mary Cathedral, 219 Seymour Ave., Lansing, with The Rev. Fr. Arockiyasamy Santhiyagu serving as celebrant. The rite of committal will be in Deepdale Memorial Gardens. The family will receive friends at the church from 1:00 p.m. until service time on Thursday. Yang, Neng
Leslie, MI
Age 46, passed away on April 2, 2003. He was born on April 2, 1957 in Long Cheng, Laos. Neng is a native of Lao-Hmong in Laos. His family came to the United States as refugees in 1979. When Neng Yang was 15 years old, he joined the Lao-Hmong Special Forces on the HO Chi Minh trail, to support the American Troops in South Vietnam. They rescued many American pilots, who were shot down by the North Vietnamese Communist Force in Vietnam. Surviving are: his loving wife, My Neng Ly of Leslie; 7 children, Wang Yang, currently serving in the U.S. Navy, Pearl Harbor, HI, Jack, Julie, Pang Ku, Xeng Su Yang of Leslie, and Linda Vue of Lansing. Other survivors include: son-in-law, Vang Vue of Lansing, daughter-in-law, Leslie Yang of Honolulu, HI, with his two grandchildren, Rachelle and Maelani Yang also of Honolulu, HI. Funeral services will be held at 10:00 a.m. on Monday, April 14, 2003 at Our Savior Lutheran Church, 1601 W. Holmes Road, with the Rev. Zong Houa Yang officiating. Interment will follow in Evergreen Cemetery, Lansing. The visitation service will be from 9:00 a.m. to 9:00 p.m. on Saturday & Sunday, April 12th & 13th at the Estes-Leadley Greater Lansing Chapel.
Bartkowiak, Michelle M.

Age 44, passed away on Wednesday, October 22, 2003. She was born on July 27, 1959 in Lansing to Michael and Patricia Cutler. Michelle attended and received her associates degree from Lansing Community College and from there went on to complete her Bachelor's degree at Western Michigan University. She had most recently worked for the Michigan National Guard and receiving various awards, with the greatest of those being the Department of Defense National Award for Outstanding Employee with a Disability which was bestowed upon her in 1996. She was also a member of the Mason/Holt Areie # 3734 Eagles Ladies Auxiliary and the Capital Area Blues Society. Michelle is survived by: her husband, Michael L. Bartkowiak; son, Michael both of Holt; mother, Patricia Cutler of Holt; father, Michael Cutler of North Carolina; sisters, Christine Cutler of Holt, Kelly Dyer of Dimondale and Kim Kirk of Florida; grandmother, Freda Andrews; uncles, James and Michael Flynn both of Lansing; aunt, Nancy (David) Crego of Lansing; several nieces and nephews and many cousins. She was preceded in death by her very special grandma, Jennie Metz as well as her grandpa, Harold, grandpa Jack Andrews and great grandma Frances Solomon. Michelle fought a battle everyday and always persevered no matter what the challenge may have been. "Whenever I think about the heroes I"ve known Michelle tops the list" - Lt. Col. Bill Deetz. Funeral services will be held at 2:00 p.m. on Monday, October 27, 2003 at the Estes-Leadley Holt/Delhi Chapel with the Rev. David Brooks officiating. The family will receive visitors from 5-7 p.m. on Saturday and 2-4 and 6-8 p.m. on Sunday at the funeral home. Memorial contributions may be given to the American Diabetes Association in memory of Michelle.
Palmer, Thomas F.

Age 46, passed away Oct. 8, 2001. He was born in Lansing Nov. 3, 1954. He lived life to the fullest yet lost a long courageous battle with cancer. He was a 1972 graduate of J. W. Sexton High School and has owned and operated Holiday Tree Service for 25 years. He enjoyed vacationing on Marco Island, fishing and golfing. Surviving are: Wife, Brenda (LaRose); Parents, Jack and Gerry Palmer; 4 Sisters, Irene (Jeff) Page, Brenda (Mark) Emmert, Joan (Dave) Hummel, Linda (Tom) Willard; 3 Brothers, Mark (Lisa) Palmer, Dave Palmer, Mike (Pam) Palmer; several nieces and nephews; special aunt, Agnes Sidoti; and many, many friends who will miss him very much. The Funeral Mass was celebrated by The Rev. John P. Klein at 11:00 a.m. Wednesday, Oct. 10, 2001 at St. Gerard Catholic Church; 4437 W. Willow St.; with the Rite of Committal at St. Joseph Catholic Cemetery. The family received friends at the Estes-Leadley Greater Lansing Chapel from 2-4 and 6-8 p.m. Tuesday, where a Vigil Service was prayed at 7:00 p.m. In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to the Breslin Cancer Center, C/O Ingham Regional Healthcare Foundation.
Berry, Marjorie L.

Beloved wife, mother, sister, friend, Marjorie L. (Smith) Berry, lost her valiant fight with cancer on Friday, October 3, 2003. Marge was born on December 7, 1938 in Monroe, MI and had lived in the Lansing area for 44 years. She had been an 18 year survivor of breast cancer and had done her part to help fight the disease by being a member of the Tomaxafin clinical trials. Marge is survived by her loving husband of 44 years, Richard “Dick” Berry, Sr.; daughter, Kim and husband, John Smokoski; son, Rick and wife, Karen (Cole); grandsons, Ben and Brian Berry, Ian and Dylan Smokoski; brother, William Smith and wife, Bonnie of Monroe; sister, Sandy Lewandowski and husband, Gene of Toledo; 3 nieces, Stacy, Jill and Jodi; one nephew, Marc; their families and many, many friends. She was preceded in death by her parents, Horace and Lillian Smith. Marge was a lifetime member and 14 year treasurer of Faith United Methodist Church, an avid traveler, MSU fan, bowler, pinochle player and golfer. Her life was also enriched by many lifetime friendships. She was an incredibly strong and loving woman who never allowed anything to dampen her enthusiasm for life or her family. She was a tireless supporter to her family, her friends, and her church, and will be forever missed by us all. We feel very blessed to have had her in our lives. Funeral services will be held at 11:00 a.m. Tuesday, October 7, 2003, at Faith United Methodist Church, 4301 S. Waverly Rd., with interment in Dimondale Cemetery. The family will receive friends at the Estes-Leadley Greater Lansing Chapel from 3-8 p.m. Monday.
