Williams, Rev. Reynold Edward

Lansing, MI

A loving husband passed away peacefully on January 25, 2003 at the age of 51. He was an employee at GM; served on the chaplain committee for U.A.W. Local 602; and was also an active member of Mount Olive Baptist Church. He leaves to cherish his memories, wife JoAnne, parents, Vanderbilt and Anna Booker, a brother, two sisters, a son, two daughters, a grandson, and a host of aunts, uncles, cousins, nieces, nephews and friends. Funeral services will be held at Galilee Baptist Church, 2511 Reo Road, Lansing, on Saturday, February 1, 2003 at 1:00 p.m. The family will receive friends from 12-2 and 6-8 p.m. on Friday at the Estes-Leadley Greater Lansing Chapel, 325 W. Washtenaw, Lansing.

Norris, Jerry D. "J.D."

Lansing, MI

Age 70, passed away on June 15, 2002. He was born on February 16, 1932 in Lansing, and has been a Lansing resident all of his life. Mr. Norris graduated from J.W. Sexton High School in 1950, and had been employed at Oldsmobile, retiring in 1980. He loved his family first, but also enjoyed hunting, fishing and bowling. His special interest was his grandson. Surviving are: his wife of 34 ˝ years, Pat; daughter, Jaimie; son, James; grandson, Tyler; 2 brothers, R. Keith (Thelma), and Jack (Nancy) both of Lansing; sister, Barbara Jean Jenks of East Lansing and numerous nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by his parents, 2 brothers and 2 sisters. A funeral service will be held at 12:00 p.m. Wednesday, June 19, 2002, at the Estes-Leadley Greater Lansing Chapel, with interment in Chapel Hill Memorial Gardens. The family will receive friends at the funeral home from 2-4 and 6-8 p.m. Tuesday. Memorial contributions may be made to the American Lung Association in memory of Jerry D. Norris.

Kruger, Daniel H.

Grand Ledge, MI

Dr. Daniel H. Kruger, distinguished M.S.U. professor and devoted husband, beloved father and grandfather died of cancer on July 8, 2003. Dr. Kruger coined the phrase "Social Mechanic" to describe the process of transforming society for the greater good; a process for which he himself was a passionate advocate and master practitioner. He was born and raised in Norfolk, Virginia near the Chesapeake Bay. His childhood in the segregated South led him to a life-long involvement in civil rights. He was a passionate advocate for many social justice organizations, and a board member of the National Urban League. He proudly served his country during World War II, rising to the rank of lieutenant commander in the Navy. These years in China were his introduction to “multiculturalism”, the art of patience and the importance of saving face. This path continued to the world of higher education, leading finally to a PhD in economics. As a member of the faculty at Michigan State University, he helped establish the School of Labor and Industrial Relations. Thousands of students energized his classrooms for 46 years. He retired as professor emeritus in 2001 continuing to mentor students until this past semester. Guiding labor and management relations to compromise was another pillar of his life work. He arbitrated hundreds of cases, working patiently and without cease to bridge differences and solve bitter, economically devastating conflict. His cases often serve as models for labor management conflict resolution. Nominated by Presidents Reagan and Bush, he also served on the Federal Services Impasse Panel for an unprecedented 3 terms. A proud and active member of the Jewish community, including Congregation Shaarey Zedek and the University Hillel, the biblical values of justice charity and tolerance shaped his world view. Daniel H. Kruger is survived by his beloved wife, Dr. Carol Beals of Grand Ledge, Michigan, 7 children and 18 grandchildren. Donations in lieu of flowers may be sent to: The Daniel H. Kruger Endowment for the Study of Employment and Work, School of Labor and Industrial Relations, 403 S. Kedzie Hall, Michigan State University, East Lansing, Michigan 48824. Funeral services will be held at 10:00 a.m. on Thursday, July 10, 2003 at Congregation Shaarey Zedek, 1924 Coolidge Road, East Lansing, MI. Interment will follow at Evergreen Cemetery. Arrangements by the Estes-Leadley Greater Lansing Chapel.

Millis, Luba B. (nee Evanoff)

Lansing, MI

Age 67, died unexpectedly on June 26, 2002. She was born on February 21, 1935 in Lansing, Michigan, the daughter of Blagoy and Slavka Evanoff. Luba graduated from Eastern High School and attended William Woods College in Missouri and Michigan State University. She was born and raised in the Old North End of Lansing, and worked in the family business of Bill's Restaurant and Bar in her youth. Luba belonged to the American Bulgarian Macedonian Association, until her death, and was a former member of St. Andrew Orthodox Church. Surviving are: her husband, Robert; children, Roberta (Robert) Schneiderman of Lansing, Cassandra (Mark) Foster of East Lansing, and Mark (Ann) of Perry; beloved grandson, Matthew Matney; sisters-in-law, Luba Evanoff and Jeananne Anne (Larry) Carlson; as well as numerous cousins, nieces, nephews and many special friends. She was preceded in death by: her parents, Blagoy and Slavka Evanoff; father-in-law, Robert Millis, Sr.; mother-in-law, Gladys Sherwood; sister, Ruth Kevwitch; and brother, Carl Evanoff. Luba will be remembered for many things. Her love of antiques, especially her collection of hammered aluminum, her love of cooking, reading a good mystery, traveling and wintering in Florida at their home in Oak Hill. Luba was blessed with artistic talent, which translated into a love of decorating, especially her new home in Perry. She will be remembered and missed by many friends, who will always recall her readiness to help and support. In the past few years the greatest importance in her life was her love of her family, and her time with her grandson, Matt. Luba's sense of humor will never be forgotten. She enjoyed e-mailing the latest humor to her friends and relatives. The funeral service was conducted by Fr. Mark Sietsema on Saturday, June 29, 2002 at 2:30 p.m., at Holy Trinity Greek Orthodox Church, 1701 E. Saginaw Street, Lansing, with interment in Oak Plain Cemetery, Shaftsburg. The family received friends at the Estes-Leadley Greater Lansing Chapter beginning on Friday at 6:30 p.m. with a Trisagion at 7:00 p.m. Memorial contributions may be made to Children's Miracle Network or Holy Trinity Greek Orthodox Church, in Luba's memory.

Lorenz, Gwen

Okemos, MI

Beloved wife of Jim, mother of Jim, Jr., Michele and Ed, sister of Frank, grandmother of Matthew, mother-in-law of Judy and Janet, sister-in-law of Charlotte, aunt of Marlyss and Scott. Age 72. Gwen joyfully joined her heavenly Father in paradise on Saturday, March 23, 2002 after a long battle with cancer. She died at home surrounded by her dear husband and children, and comforted by the prayers and best wishes of her extended family, friends and pastor, assisted by the tender efforts of her medical care providers. Gwen was born in Detroit, and as a child, achieved notoriety as a vocalist. At the end of the war she married a sailor. The sailor became an IBM salesman and she became a homemaker and mother. They build and shared a life together for 53 years. They moved from Detroit to Jackson and later to Lansing. Gwen found a new outlet for her performing talents as a actress with the Lansing Civic Players community theatre where she enjoyed many years of camaraderie and showmanship. She supported her children's interests as a Girl Scout Leader and marching band booster. Gwen began a home business as a saleswoman for Vivian Woodard Cosmetics and developed it into a successful distributorship. Later, she directed her talents to being a travel agent at Anderson International Travel where she made many friends and enjoyed various adventures. In retirement, she transformed her hobby of doll collecting into a business of buying and selling collectable toys and dolls. Gwen had a genuine love for other people and a zest for life. She will be missed on earth but welcomed in heaven. A memorial service was held at University Lutheran Church, 1020 S. Harrison, East Lansing, on Saturday, March 30, 2002 at 11:00 a.m., with a luncheon and celebration to follow. In lieu of flowers, a memorial fund has been established in her name at the church.

Peterson, Clarence B. "Pete"

Holt, MI

Age 83, died January 26, 2002, born December 15, 1918 in Fond Du Loc, WI. He was preceded in death by his parents, Peter B. Peterson on July 12, 1945 and Eva E. (Jennely) Peterson on July 6, 1965, and half brother, John B. Birchall on February 15, 1993. After marrying Donna R. (Tracy) in 1949, they moved to Michigan and have spent their 53 years of marriage here, raising 7 children: Marilyn (Ralph) Mohr, Laura (James) Gleason, Patricia (Jacob) Metzmaker, Kenneth (Teresa) Peterson, Norman (Robin) Peterson, Carolyn (Brian) Sweet and Rhonda (Aaron) Colin. Also surviving are: 30 grandchildren; 17 great grandchildren; 1 great great grandchild; many nieces and nephews; and one very special niece, Donna (Roger) Shattuck from IL, found through genealogy research in 2000. Clarence worked for several trucking companies and gas stations. He retired due to a disability, from Michigan Electric Company of Okemos in 1972. He enjoyed yard work, Sunday drives and family gatherings. Clarence has had many friends throughout the years, including, Jerry Thelen of Lansing, Otto (Mary) Heikkila of Mason, Sam Whittaker of Holt, Rick (Sharon) Collins of Holt, Bob (Maxine) Hadley and a very close friend, Kurt Kelly who died in 1999. A funeral service was held at 1:00 p.m., on Wednesday, January 30, 2002 at the Estes-Leadley Holt/Delhi Chapel. Interment was in East Lawn Memory Gardens. The family received friends from 2-4 and 6-8 p.m., both on Monday and Tuesday at the funeral home. Memorial contributions may be made to Ingham Hospice, in Clarence's memory.

Vinton, Alma
Lansing, MI

A loving wife, mother, grandmother, and friend, lost a courageous battle against diabetes on April 1, 2003. She was preceded in death by a son, Antonio (1954) and husband, Antonio (1992). Surviving are: 4 daughters, Wilda (Aaron) Jackson, Delma (Michael) Castilla, Ivy (Orlo) Robinson of Lansing, MI and Sally Vinton of San Antonio, TX; 3 sons, Tony (Beth) Vinton, Joe (Jeanette) Vinton and Adam (Teresa) Vinton; 18 grandchildren; and 1 great granddaughter. Graveside services will be held at 10:00 a.m. on Saturday, April 5, 2003 at Forest Lawn Cemetery. In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions, in loving memory of Alma, may be made to the National Kidney Foundation.

Millner, Buford V.

Lansing

Age 100, went to be with his Lord on August 28, 2003. He was born on June 15, 1903 in Paynesville, MO, and has lived in the Lansing area most of his life. He was the youngest of 5 brothers and 1 sister. Buford enjoyed gardening, golfing, traveling and playing various musical instruments. He was devoted to his family, his home and his country. The plaque that graced the entrance to his beautiful garden expressed his sentiment for life: “One is nearer God’s heart in a garden than anywhere else on earth.” Mr. Millner was employed at Oldsmobile for 30 years, retiring in 1965. He was preceded in death by his wife, Margaret (Hutchens) in May of 1961. His family will miss him dearly, especially his stories and songs of “the olden days.” Surviving are: 6 children, Margaret (Joe) Kortge of Scottville, Patricia (Lyle) Hanson of Walhalla, Barbara (Russell) Ross of Elsie, Buford (Sue) Millner of Traverse City, Kathy (Bill) Archer of Haslett and Thomas Millner of Miami, FL; 16 grandchildren; 38 great grandchildren; 4 great-great grandchildren; several brothers and sisters-in-law, and many nieces and nephews. His family would like to thank the staff at Timber Ridge Senior Assisted Living for the kind and generous care they provided to Buford in the last years of his life. Funeral services will be held at 10:00 a.m. Tuesday, September 2, 2003, at the Estes-Leadley Greater Lansing Chapel, with Rev. Royce Allen officiating. Interment will follow at Deepdale Memorial Gardens. The family will receive friends at the funeral home from 2–4 and 6-8 p.m. Monday (Labor Day). In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to the J.W. Sexton, Buford Millner Scholarship Fund, or to St. Vincent Home for Boys in memory of Buford Millner.
