Scheffel, Robert John
Lansing, MI
Age 85, passed away on April 27, 2003. Robert was born May 26, 1917 to Rueben and Tressie Scheffel in Jackson, Michigan. He graduated from Jackson High School in 1935, and moved to Lansing in 1944 to enter the grocery business. To those who knew him well, he seemed to be possessed of cosmic good fortune. He was happily married to Evelyn Scheffel for 58 years. She preceded him in death in 1999. He had three children, two grandchildren and countless friends. He loved them all and they loved him back. Bob, in partnership with his brother-in-law and friend Bruce Goodrich, had a successful business, Goodrich’s Spartan Shop Rite. He worked very hard and took pleasure in it. He also knew how to stop working and took pleasure in that as well. He traveled the world many times over with his wife, Evelyn, and friends. Often they rented a car and toured the countryside, having such adventures as a mule trek on the Island of Santorini, a flight near Mt. Everest in a Royal Nepalese Transport Plane, attendance at Carnivale in Rio and the renting of a houseboat in Kashmir. This was in addition to many splendid cruises, including memorable voyages on the QE2. Bob was always ready to go again, but happy to come home. For most of his life, he abounded in good health. If he had even a cold, his family would murmur wonderingly, “Could Dad be sick?” It never lasted, of course. If there were a game of chance or a prize, he would likely win it. If there was a decent thing to be done, an obligation to be met, a delightful surprise to be conceived…done, done, and done. He had, to the casual observer, the enviable ability to always know the correct thing to do, and very…simply..do it. He didn’t talk a great deal, but his being seemed so well conceived that he lived in something like a state of grace much of the time. There are old movies of Bob at age twelve, exuberant, riding no hands on his bicycle. Something of that beguiling exuberance was with him all his life. Bob is survived by three children: Susan (Cris) Roosenraad of Northfield, Minnesota, Steven (Marilyn) Scheffel of East Lansing, and May Beth Scheffel of East Lansing. Also surviving are two sisters, Dorothy Schoettle of Jamestown, Indiana, and Ardath Scheffel of Lansing, two grandchildren, Christopher (Jodi) Roosenraad of Virginia and Elizabeth Scheffel of East Lansing, and beloved in-laws, Mary Lou and Carleton Griffin of Ann Arbor, and Bruce and Shirley Goodrich of Lansing, plus many nieces and nephews. A special thanks to Tami Droste for her steadfast, loving care, to Sparrow Hospital Oncology and Radiation Departments, and to Tom Plasman and Ray Mazurek for their tenacious friendship. The Rev. Sally Nolen at 2:00 p.m. will conduct religious services on Thursday, May 1, 2003 at the Estes-Leadley Greater Lansing Chapel. The family will receive friends at the funeral home from 2-4 and 7-9 p.m. on Wednesday. In lieu of flowers, the family asks that donations to the Sparrow Foundation, Michigan State University Development Fund, or Hospice House of Mid-Michigan be considered. “His life was gentle and the elements so mixed in him that Nature might stand up and say, ‘This was a man.” (W. Shakespeare)
