Burke, Ione E.

Age 80, passed away on Tuesday, December 23, 2003. She was born on March 1, 1923 in Howell, MI to William and Mary (DePew) Murphy. Ione was a true people person, loved by family and friends alike. She loved meeting people and made new friends throughout her life. She was a most generous person, giving of herself, her money and her spirit. She inspired many people with her kind notes and letters. An avid reader and writer, she liked to write short stories that always had humor as a central theme. She loved playing cards, especially bridge. Ione was a devoted follower of Christ. She believed in the love of Jesus and supported the church throughout her life. She will be dearly missed by all who knew her. Ione was preceded in death by her husband, Robert. Surviving are: her sons, Robert (Mary), Frank (Stephany) and Patrick (Beth); grandchildren, Miranda, Matthew and Zachary; special friend Don Wordell and many nieces and nephews. Funeral services will be held at 12 Noon on Saturday, December 27, 2003 at the Estes-Leadley Greater Lansing Chapel. Interment will follow in Deepdale Memorial Gardens. The family will receive visitors from 2-4 and 6-8 p.m. on Friday at the funeral home. In lieu of flowers, please make donations to your favorite church or charity.
Delnaay, John Paul
Lansing, MI
Age 42, passed away on December 15, 2003. John earned his Bachelor’s Degree from Davenport University in Grand Rapids. He enjoyed traveling, sailing, was an avid reader, a loving family member, a good friend, and he enjoyed helping others. He was preceded in death by his father, Jack H. Delnaay in 2002. Surviving are: mother, Frieda M. Delnaay; and brother, Douglas C. Delnaay. Memorial services will be held at 2:00 p.m. on Thursday, December 18, 2003 at the Estes-Leadley Greater Lansing Chapel, with Pastor Wesley B. Emerson officiating. The family will receive friends one hour prior to the service on Thursday at the funeral home. Goldsmith-Mills, Nicholas Hunter

Nicholas entered this life on Saturday, August 14, 2004 and departed on Sunday, August 15, 2004. He was baptized by the Rev. Hugh E. Banninga. Nicholas leaves behind his parents, Shawn Goldsmith and Lisa Mills. He is also survived by grandparents Janis Tolson and Frank Tolson, III; Thomas Goldsmith; and Eugene and Carol Mills along with many loving aunts, uncles, cousins, and great grandparents. A private graveside service will be held on Tuesday, August 17, 2004 at Deepdale Memorial Park, with interment to follow. Arrangements by the Estes-Leadley Holt/Delhi Chapel.
Burleigh, Thelma E.
Lansing, MI
Age 95, passed away on December 21, 2002. She was born on January 18, 1907 in Dansville, MI and has lived in the Lansing area all of her life. Thelma was a 50-year member of the Greater Lansing Garden Club and had been a member of Central United Methodist Church since 1930. She enjoyed 26 summers in their cottage, “Hiawatha”, at Epworth Heights in Ludington, where she served as Librarian and maintained the flower gardens. Thelma and her husband Leonard were blessed with a daughter, Susan in 1941. Since Susan’s death in 1951, in her honor, the Burleigh’s have been major contributors to the new Educational Building at Lansing’s Potter Park Zoo, the Michigan 4-H Foundation, the M.S.U. Horticulture Department Scholarship Fund, and the Camping Fund of the West Michigan Conference of the United Methodist Church. Thelma was preceded in death by her husband of 67 years, Leonard; daughter, Susan; 3 sisters, Grace, Dorothea, and Vernice. Surviving are: 2 nieces; a nephew; and several friends, including special friends and caregivers, Karla and Tim Reilly. A funeral service will be held at 12:00 noon on Thursday, December 26, 2002 at the Estes-Leadley Greater Lansing Chapel, with interment in Evergreen Cemetery. The family will receive friends from 11:00 until service time on Thursday at the funeral home. Stryker, Franklin S.

Born October 27, 1934, passed away January 6, 2003 "29 and holding" at age 68. Franklin served in the U.S. Army for eleven years and in the Korean Conflict. He is survived by his wife of 36 years, Margaret "Peggy" Stryker; children, Billie Jo (Frank) Cuff and Ken (Mary) Stryker; like children, Tasha (Dean) Dack, Dianne Lay; grandchildren, April and Jacob; like grandchildren, Sonia, Dean II and Hunter; sisters, Gertrude (Bill) Scott, Bonnie Dale (Bill) Lesman and Elleanor Stryker. He was preceded in death by his father, Dale; mother, Leona; step-father, Earl and brother, Caroll. Funeral services will be held at 4:00 p.m. on Sunday, January 12, 2003 at the Estes-Leadley Holt/Delhi Chapel, with the Rev. Weatherby of Middlebury United Methodist Church officiating. Interment in Maple Hill Cemetery, Cadillac, MI. The family will receive visitors from 2 to 4 and 6 to 8 p.m. on Saturday at the funeral home. For those who wish, memorial contributions may be given to Omaha For Boys, Veteran's Of America or the family, in memory of Franklin.
Burns, Edna M. “Dorothy”

Age 90, passed away on April 8, 2003. She was born on March 21, 1913 in Cincinnati, OH, the daughter of Floyd and Nancy Donley. Edna was a member of the Holt United Methodist Church and worked at Michigan Miller Insurance. She was preceded in death by: her husband, Gerald Burns; 2 sons, Jack and Robert Burns; daughter, Kathleen Burns; 2 grandsons, Douglas and Patrick Burns; sister, Marian Hart; brother, Robert Donley. She is survived by: grandchildren, Denise Otto, Kathy (Rick) Ackels, Diane Linkeman, Lori (Dorrance) Davey; 9 gr.grandchildren; several nieces and nephews; and sister-in-law, Alice Donley. Graveside services will be held at 2:00 p.m. on Thursday, April 10, 2003 at Chapel Hill Memorial Gardens, with the Rev. Stephan Weinberger officiating. There will be no visitation. Memorial contributions may be made to the Holt United Methodist Church. Arrangements by the Estes-Leadley Holt/Delhi Chapel.
Burt, Merle Howard
Holt, MI
Age 78, passed away on October 20, 2004. Merle was born on December 30, 1925 in Lansing, the son of Howard James and Bernice May (Miller) Burt. He was a graduate of Lansing Eastern High School in 1944 and was a very good baseball pitcher in his high school days. This carried into his later years as he was an avid softball player and was playing in a senior league up until 1999. Merle retired from Oldsmobile in 1982, following 33 ˝ years of service. He was a member of the U.S. Navy and served his country as a prison guard from 1944-1946. His hobbies included, working in his yard, trips with his friends, and sports (Detroit Tigers and Red Wings fan). He loved spending time with his grand kids and attending their activities. His friendly smiles and waves from the swing, will be remembered. Merle was preceded in death by his first wife, Arlene Stine and his brother, James Burt. The family would like to acknowledge the Stine family who have remained close over the years. Surviving are: his wife of 37 years, Joyce; 7 children, Marv (Joyce) Burt, Pat (Scott) Somers, Gary Lovell, Linda Lovell-Tamer, Ken (Kendra) Burt, Doug (Muriel) Burt, and Diane (Randy) McKenzie; 18 grandchildren; 10 great grandchildren; brother, Ronald (Linda) Burt; sister, Beatrice Burt; and several nieces & nephews. Funeral services will be held at 12:00 p.m. on Saturday, October 23, 2004 at the First Presbyterian Church of Holt, 2021 N. Aurelius Road, Holt, with Pastor Wesley B. Emerson officiating. Interment will follow in Evergreen Cemetery. The family will receive friends from 2-6 p.m. on Friday at the Estes-Leadley Holt/Delhi Chapel. Memorial contributions may be made to the American Diabetes Foundation or to the American Heart Association.
Johnson, Helen J.

Age 60, passed away on October 1, 2002 at her home. She was born on December 25, 1941, in Hammondsport, NY. Mrs. Johnson was a member of New Testament Assemblies Church. She was a very devoted wife and mother, and is survived by: her husband, Alvin; 3 daughters, Tammy Young of Dansville, NY, Tracy (Donald) Goodson of Lansing, Tina (Michael) Young of Lansing; son, Richard (Mellissa) Johnson of Lansing; 8 grandchildren, Amanda, Miriam, Casy, Aaron and Desiree Young, Justin, Brent and Chad Johnson; sister, Joni Newbronner, and several nieces and nephews. She was preceded in death by her parents, Clair and Miriam VanGelder, and brother, William VanGelder. A funeral service will be held at 12:00 noon Saturday, October 5, 2002, at the Estes-Leadley Greater Lansing Chapel with Rev. James Williams officiating. The family will receive friends at the funeral home from 2-4 and 6-8 p.m. Friday. Interment will take place on Monday at Ft. Custer National Cemetery in Battle Creek. Memorial contributions may be made to the family, or to the Arthritis Foundation in memory of Helen J. Johnson.
