Age 48, Loving Mother, Grandmother, Daughter, Sister, Aunt and Friend passed away Sept. 19, 2001. She was born in Lansing on May 4, 1953. She was preceded in death by her father, Elias Cortez, Sr., and 2 brothers, Hernan and Riccardo Cortez. Surviving are: Daughter, Liza Moyer; Son, Jonathon Moyer; Mother, Francisca Cortez; Granddaughter, Calysta Cook; 5 Sisters, Olivia (Robert) Hannah, Consuelo Cortez, Sue (James) Tissue, Lori Cortez, Jane (Mark) Lifsey; 6 Brothers, Elias Cortez, Jr., Rudy (Vickie) Cortez, Armando Cortez, Ruben Cortez, Carlos Cortez, Tony (Kim) Cortez; many aunts, uncles, cousins, nieces and nephews; very special friends, Diana Priebe, Alice Mansfield, Gracie Priebe. Funeral services were conducted by Chaplain Richard Preston of Hospice of Lansing, Inc. at 1:00 p.m. Monday, Sept. 24, 2001 in the Estes-Leadley Greater Lansing Chapel, with interment in St. Joseph Catholic Cemetery. The family received friends at the funeral home from 1-5 p.m. Sunday. Memorial contributions may be made to Hospice of Lansing, Inc. or to the Muscular Dystrophy Association/A.L.S.
Gleason, Bertha L.
Holt, MI
Age 85, passed away on Wednesday, October 8, 2003. She was born on August 28, 1918 in Bay City, Michigan and has been a resident of the Holt area since 1950. She was a member of the Holt United Methodist Church, the United Methodist Women and Priscilla Circle. She was employed by the State of Michigan, retiring in 1981. She was preceded in death by her husband, Jim Gleason, Sr. Surviving are: several nieces and nephews, including special niece, Patricia Allen and family; and special friends, George and Sandra McCrumb and family. Religious services will be conducted at 10:00 a.m., Tuesday, October 14, 2003 at the Holt United Methodist Church, 2321 N. Aurelius Road, Holt, with the Rev. Lynn Grimes officiating. Interment will be in Maple Ridge Cemetery. The family will receive friends at the Estes-Leadley Holt/Delhi Chapel from 4-7 p.m. on Sunday, October 12, 2003. Memorial contributions may be made to the Holt United Methodist Church or Hospice House of Mid-Michigan.
Smith, Floyd (Pete Proctor)

Floyd left his family behind early on the morning of January 24, 2003. He was born on December 12, 1915 to the late Rev. Clyde Smith and Lovie Bridget, both of Humboldt, Tennessee. He was preceded in death by his parents, one sister and his son, Forest “Smitty” Smith. He leaves to cherish his memories his ex-wife, Joe Ella Smith; daughters, Annie (Willie) DeBerry, Doris Graves and Jessie Smith; sons, J. Earl Smith, William (Mamie) Smith, John (Roma) Smith, all of Lansing, and Rev. Robert (Elaine) Smith of Indianapolis, IN; and adopted son, Cecil Brown. Funeral services will be held at 11:00 a.m. on Friday, January 31, 2003 at Original Church of God, 3500 S. Pennsylvania, Lansing. Interment will follow in Evergreen Cemetery. The family will receive friends 1/2 hour prior to the service at the church. Arrangements by the Estes-Leadley Greater Lansing Chapel.

Age 82, passed away from this life on May 31, 2002, to be with our Lord Jesus Christ. He was preceded in death by his wife, Marjorie; son, Mark; and granddaughter, Brenda Watson. Surviving are: 3 daughters, Billie Hayes of Hastings, Bonnie (Gary) Watson of Dimondale, and Mary (Gary) Raymond of Eagle; 6 grandchildren and 14 great grandchildren. Brockway, William G.

Breathing unencumbered and walking without pain for the first time in 30 years, our precious husband, daddy, father-in-law, and grandfather crossed the threshold of heaven on November 14, 2003. Proud to have served his country in the Pacific during WWII, a loyal member of the American Legion, and an expert in the field of heating and refrigeration, William blessed the lives of his loving wife, Georgene; devoted daughters, Carla (Richard) Phillips and Lorna (Richard) Lieske; grandsons, Justin (Beth) and Jordan Phillips; great granddaughter, Deirdre Phillips; and a host of family and friends. Special thanks to Dr. Carol Beals for 25 years of dedicated care and friendship, to Pastor Charles Grauer, Christ UMC, for his prayerful support, and to Nicole, Maggi, Suzanne, Tamara, and all the doctors and technicians at Ingham Medical ICU for their compassion and tenderness during our William’s final days. A memorial service will be held at 12:00 Noon Saturday, November 22, 2003, at Holt United Methodist Church, 2321 N. Aurelius Road, with Rev. Lynn Grimes and Rev. Richard Lieske officiating. Our loving wife and mother went suddenly to be with the Lord on Monday, August 11, 2003 after a battle with ALS. Born in 1937 in Madisonville, Kentucky, to Howard and Goldie Overton. Wanda graduated from Holt High School, attended MSU and was a retiree of Board of Water and Light and attended Holt Baptist Church. She will be deeply missed by her loving husband, Marvin; beautiful daughters, Debbie (Norm) Harris, Tammy (Rick) Knop, Margie Ray; 9 cherished grandchildren, Brandi, Whitney, Taylor and Nicholas, Kristi, Katie and Chloe, Amanda and Matthew; sister, Geraldine (John) Hamel; niece, Dona Breese; nephew, Daniel Hamel; sister-in-law, Clarabelle (Joe) Herrick and special friend, Dr. John Eulenburg. Funeral services will be held at the Holt Baptist Church, 2020 Dean (at Holt Rd) at 10:00 a.m. on Thursday, August 14, 2002, with the Rev. C. James Pasma officiating. Interment will follow in Maple Ridge Cemetery. The family will receive visitors from 5-8 p.m. Wednesday at the Estes-Leadley Holt/Delhi Chapel. Munk, Emily Hope
Infant daughter of James and Loretta Munk, of East Lansing, passed away on Monday, November 11, 2002 at Sparrow Hospital in Lansing, MI. Emily was born just 18 days prior on October 24, 2002. Survivors include her parents; paternal grandmother, Nancy Munk of Williamston; maternal grandparents, Vincent (Judy) Smith of Hillsdale; paternal great grandparents, Max (Eris) Munk of Hudson and Jay (Alberta) Gould of Morenci; maternal great grandmother, Isabel Smith of Hillsdale; 2 uncles, Bruce (Jill) Munk and Dan Smith; 3 aunts, Laurie (Mike) Race, Lisa (Mark) Chamberlain, and Elizabeth (Dean) Shipman along with several cousins and other extended family members. Emily was preceded in death by her paternal grandfather, Dale L. Munk. Funeral services will be conducted by Pastor Dan Cavin at 11:00 a.m. on Thursday, November 14, 2002 at the First Baptist Church of Williamston, 3185 N. Williamston Rd. The family will receive friends at the church on Thursday for one hour prior to the service. Interment services will be held at 3:00 p.m. on Thursday at Oak Grove Cemetery in Morenci, MI. Thomas Richard Broadbent
Grand Ledge, Michigan
Thomas Richard Broadbent (Tom) was born in Michigan City, Indiana on September 17, 1947, and passed away on November 30, 2004. He graduated from high school in Ithaca and was a University of Michigan Alumnus, with a civil engineering major. He came to live in the Lansing area in 1979 when he went to work for the Michigan Highway Department, where he worked until his retirement in late 2002. Tom served in the army during the Vietnam War and was awarded two purple hearts for combat injuries. He was a staunch University of Michigan fan; he loved playing golf with his friends; and bridge with his parents-in-law (even though Tom and Irene usually were soundly defeated). He had a brilliant mind and a quick wit, and loved to play jokes. Tom and Irene were married for over 23 years and they were the loves of each others lives. They were blessed when able to adopt a wonderful daughter, Jenny, who gave him the greatest joy. His family was the most important thing to him. Tom was a loving and beloved husband, daddy, brother, uncle, son, son-in-law, and friend. Preceding him in death were his father, Harry A. Broadbent and mother, Norma (Jean) Young Broadbent of Rockford; mother-in-law, Marian Florence (Eister) Mead of Commerce; and brother-in-law, Robert R. Mead of Chardon, Ohio. He is survived by: his wife, Irene M. Mead; daughter, Jennifer Mead Broadbent; brother, H. Ronald and Carolynn Broadbent; and father and mother-in-law, Robert and Bette Mead. Also surviving are brothers and sisters-in-law, Marti Macko, Chris Johnson, Carol Mead, Bill and Linda Mead, Annie Mead, and Beth and Mark Seacord. Surviving nieces and nephews are Rhonda (Eric) Steinhelper, Robin (Brad) Haskins, Jeanette Macko, Deanna (Brian) Blue, Laureen Macko, Bob (Teri) Johnson, Kristen Johnson, Jill (Chad) Faber, Steve (Florencia) Mead, Joe Mead, Andy Mead, Bryan Mooney, Jennifer Seacord and Jessica Seacord, and seven great nieces and nephews. He was like a second dad to Anna A. Mityashina (Siberia) and Shaun Bates (Charlotte). He is also survived by wonderful and caring friends, too numerous to list. Funeral arrangements are being made by the Estes-Leadley Greater Lansing Chapel, 325 W. Washtenaw, Lansing, Michigan. Alene E. Gilmore
Passed away on Sunday, April 27, 2003 at the age of 86.
Alene was born on October 26, 1916 in Sunfield, Michigan. She was the second of 4 daughters born to Clare and Ethol Figg. Being raised on a farm in the Vermontville area, she gained strength of character and appreciation for hard work that was always evident. After attending Lansing Business University she married Paul M. Gilmore on November 19, 1938. They were married for more that 50 years when Paul preceded her in death in 1989. Together Alene and Paul raised 4 children and created a business, Gilmore and Sons Refrigeration, which still exists today. They were members of Holt United Methodist church for many years. By far the greatest role Alene played in life and which she took the most pride in, was being a mother, grandmother, and great grandmother. The lives she has touched will be forever blessed for having known her. She took delight in any occasion that involved the gathering of her families, especially when she could prepare her wonderful dinners. Alene is survived by 4 children; Richard (Delores) Gilmore and Paul (Linda) Gilmore Jr. both of Lansing; Shirley (Duane) Nelson of St. Petersberg, Florida, and Sandra (Mike) Taylor of Portage. She is also survived by 10 grandchildren, 11 great grandchildren, a sister, Hildred Peabody of Vermontville, a special aunt and uncle, Norma and Frederick Bunday of Lansing, many nieces, and nephews, and cousins. Alene was very proud to have a grandson serving as a naval flight commander in operation Iraqi freedom. Funeral services will be held at 10:00am on Wednesday April 30, 2003 at the Holt United Methodist Church 2321 Aurelius Rd. Holt, with the Rev. Lynn Grimes officiating. Internment will follow in Evergreen Cemetery. The family will receive friends from 2-4 and 6-8 pm on Tuesday at the Estes-Leadley Holt/Delhi Chapel. Memorial contributions may be made to Holt United Methodist Church or the American Heart Association in memory of Alene E. Gilmore.
