Smith, Helen Marguerite

Morley, MI (formerly of Lansing)

Age 80, passed away on April 13, 2003. She was born on May 15, 1922 in Berea, Ohio, the daughter of Sylvester and Wanda (Beck) Reitz. Helen retired as a Secretary at Eastern High School after 15 years of service. She was preceded in death by: brother, David Reitz; 2 great grandchildren, Destiny Smith and Jacob Dake; sister and brother-in-law, Bernadine and Paul Hake. Helen is survived by: her loving husband of 60 years, Harold Smith; daughters, Sandra (Bill) Bannasch and Patricia (Mike) Murphy, both of Lansing; sons, Richard V. (Lana) Smith and Gary (Ruth) Smith, both of Lansing and Robert (Marleen) Smith of DeWitt; 12 grandchildren; 3 step-grandchildren; 14 great-grandchildren; 5 step-great grandchildren; brother, Royce (Dorothy) Reitz of Monticello, IL; sisters, Betty (Jack) Rickard of Ft. Myers, FL, Barbara (Herbert) Schultz of Grand Ledge, and Joyce (Larry) Dunham of Six Lakes; sister-in-law, Barbara Reitz of Bradenton, FL; brother-in-law, Robert H. (Barbara) Smith of DeWitt; and many nieces, nephews and cousins. Funeral services will be held at 10:00 a.m. on Saturday, April 19, 2003 at the Estes-Leadley Greater Lansing Chapel. Interment will follow in Deepdale Memorial Gardens. The family will receive friends at the funeral home from 2-4 and 6-8 p.m. on Friday. Memorial contributions may be made to a charity of one’s choice.

Bridenbaugh, Charlotte A.

Lansing, MI
Age 81, passed away on July 7, 2003. Charlotte was employed as an Executive Secretary with the John Deere Company and was a member of RSVP and enjoyed playing cards with her friends at Cadgewith Farms. She was preceded in death by: husband, Fritz Wolf in 1942; and husband, John Bridenbaugh in 1961. Surviving are: daughter, Annie (Scott) Everett-Connine of Haslett, MI; grandchildren, Rob (Laura) Everett of WI, Bunny Everett of CA and Elainne Everett of Grand Rapids, MI; 5 great grandchildren; and sister, Betty Austin of Potterville, MI. A memorial service will be held at 3:00 p.m. on Saturday, July 12, 2003 at the Cadgewith Farms Clubhouse, 2300 E. State Road, Lansing., with the Rev. Margaret Jones officiating. The family will receive friends 2 hours prior to the service at Cadgewith Farms. Inurnment will be at a later date. In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to the Capital Area Humane Society. Arrangements by the Estes-Leadley Greater Lansing Chapel.

Dexterhouse, Carol Ann

Lansing, MI

Age 52, passed away on Saturday, November 20, 2004. She was born in Lansing on October 31, 1952. Survivors include: her mother, Beverly J. Lantis; her father, LaVern D. (Vivian A.) Klaver; 2 sons, Tony (Kim) Dexterhouse and Todd (Kristina) Dexterhouse; 2 grandchildren, Cole and Bronson Dexterhouse; 4 sisters, Linda (Michael) Ridge, Sandra (Mickey) Hedman, Michelle (Rick) Martin, and Sue (Mark) Fritts; 2 brothers, Robert Klaver and Daniel (Roberta) Klaver; 7 nephews; 6 nieces and a host of special friends at Riverfront Apartments. Funeral services will be held at the Estes-Leadley Greater Lansing Chapel on Monday, November 22, 2004 at 2:00 p.m. The family will receive friends at the funeral home on Sunday from 6-8 p.m. Interment will follow at Deepdale Memorial Park.

Champion, Lloyd R., PhD “Champ”

Age 85, died May 28, 2004. He was born in Ironwood, MI on Aug. 15, 1918 the son of William Reginald Champion and Edna Johnson Champion. He was a Veteran of W.W. II, serving in the U.S. Army Air Corp., as a Captain and Pilot. He was a graduate of Luther L. Wright High School; Ironwood Junior College; earning a B.S. and M.S. degrees from Michigan State University, and a PhD in Genetics/Poultry Husbandry from the University of Wisconsin. He taught military flying in the U. S. Army Air Corp; general poultry at the University of Wisconsin; and Poultry Science at Michigan State University from 1951 until his retirement as a full Professor in 1980. He has been a Technical Advisor, North Central States Regional Poultry Breeding Project; Graduate faculty, MSU Commencement Committee; served on the committee to review and edit M.S. and Ph.D. theses, as well as many other activities during his long and productive career. He has received many honors, to include twice receiving the Alpha Zeta Honorary Award as one of the top instructors in the College of Agriculture. He was a member of the Poultry Science Association, Sigma XI, Alpha Gamma Rho (Alumnus), American Racing Pigeon Union, the International Federation of Racing Pigeon Fanciers, and the Arabian Horse Registry of America. He used his genetics knowledge in the breeding of Arabian Horses. He possessed a profound love of nature manifesting in fishing, hunting, extensive gardening, boating on Lake Michigan and Cut Foot Sioux Lake in Northern Minnesota. Surviving are his wife, Beverly Smith Champion of Okemos, MI; son, R. Bruce Champion, D.D.S. and his wife, Barbara of Okemos, MI; 4 grandchildren, Cara Champion Gruber and her husband, Frederick of Traverse City, MI, Justin Bruce Champion of Holt, MI, Amy Leigh McLeod and her husband, Craig of Clarkston, MI, and Ashley Robert Ames of Richmond, CA; a great granddaughter, Keely Brynn McLeod of Clarkston, MI; a brother, George C. Champion and his wife, Bonnie of Ironwood, MI; a sister, Dorothy Johnson Smith of Kenosha, WI; a nephew, Gary L. Champion, D.D.S. and his wife, Mary Lynn of Ironwood, MI; and a niece, Georgia Piilola, and her husband, Jim of Hurley, WI. A Memorial Service will be held at 10:00 a.m. on Saturday, June 5, 2004 at the Estes-Leadley Greater Lansing Chapel, with the Rev. Dr. James M. Gysel officiating. In lieu of flowers, contributions may be made to the Parkwood YMCA, 2306 Haslett Road, East Lansing, MI 48823

A long time resident of Holt, passed away on Monday, June 23, 2003 at the age of 84. He was a retired self-employed mason. Mr. Smith was preceded in death by his wife, Marion; son, Ronald and brother, James. He is survived by his daughter, Nancy Smith; 2 grandchildren; 2 great grandchildren; sisters, Lucille Canel and Betty Jones. Funeral services will be held at 8:00 p.m. on Thursday, June 26, 2003 at the Estes-Leadley Holt/Delhi Chapel. The family will receive visitors from 2 to 4 and 6 to 8 p.m. on Thursday at the funeral home. Graveside services will be held at 10:00 a.m. on Friday at Evergreen Cemetery. In lieu of flowers contributions may be given to the family.

Carr, Beatrice L.

Lansing, MI

Age 92, passed away on September 8, 2002, she was born on January 24, 1910 in Lansing to Albert and Clara (Lance) Davis. Beatrice was preceded in death by her husband, Gerald Carr; son, Walter Carr; daughter, Delores Weatherwax (Kiel); sister, Bernice Martzke; brothers, Raymond, A.J. and Bernard Davis. She is survived by; grandsons, Barry (Shannon) Kiel and Richard (Valerie) Kiel both of St. Johns; granddaughters, Kristin (Doug) Richards of Oklahoma City, OK, Tamara Leonard and Diana (Scott) Reich both of Holt; 18 great-grandchildren and many nieces and nephews. A funeral service will be held at 12 Noon on Thursday, September 12, 2002 at the Estes-Leadley Greater Lansing Chapel. Interment will follow in Chapel Hill Memorial Gardens. The family will receive visitors from 2-4 and 6-8 p.m. on Wednesday at the funeral home. Memorial contributions may be given to a charity of one’s choice in memory of Beatrice.

Hansen, Ted D.

Dickerson Lake, Stanton, MI

Age 57, passed away on June 19, 2003 at his home with his loving family. He was born in Lansing on Jan. 10, 1946. He was a 1964 graduate of Lansing Eastern High School and was employed with the Board of Water and Light for 33 ½ years, retiring in 1999. He loved his family; enjoyed his friends; and had a passion for life. Surviving are his wife of 39 ½ years, Debbie; 3 Children, Todd (Debbie) Hansen of Oregon, OH, Deneen Hansen and her friend, Dave Shewchuck of Holt, Kelleen Hansen and her fiancée, Kevin Wentworth of Ionia; special Brother-in-law who was like a son, David (Nuria)Ankney and their children Racquel and Grant of Holt; 4 Grandchildren, Brandon, Brittney and Tayler Hansen of Oregon, OH, and Alexis Mollitor of Holt; Mother and Step-Father, Mary Jean and Bill Hargreaves of Stanton; Sister, Terri (Tom) Schram of Orange County, CA; many nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by his father, Nordham Hansen in 1962. Funeral services will be held at 10:00 a.m. Monday, June 23, 2003 at Pilgrim Congregational United Church of Christ, 125 S. Pennsylvania Avenue, Lansing, with The Rev. Peter N. Robinson officiating. The family will receive friends at the Estes-Leadley Greater Lansing Chapel from 2-4 and 6-8 p.m. SATURDAY. Memorial contributions may be made to the American Cancer Society or to the Make-A-Wish Foundation.

Rasmussen, Ann L.
Chambersburg, PA

Ann L. Rasmussen, 52, of 1121 South Main Street, Chambersburg, Pennsylvania, formerly of Lansing, passed into eternal life on Sunday, December 8, 2002, in Little Rock, Arkansas. Ann Louise Fowler was born July 15, 1950 in Lansing, the daughter of Robert W. Fowler and Jeanne H. (Shalla) Fowler. She graduated from Everett High School in 1968, from Lansing Community College in 1970, and from Michigan State University in 1977. Ann was united in marriage with David F. Rasmussen on November 24, 1973. Ann worked for Jon’s Country Burgers of Lansing from 1970 to 1977 and as a kindergarten and preschool teacher in Lansing and Fort Worth, Texas. She was active in children’s ministry in Baptist churches for nearly 30 years. Ann is survived by her husband, David; her son, Nathan of Chambersburg, PA; her parents, Robert and Jeanne Fowler of Lansing; her sister and her husband, Helen Lynn and Douglas Betts of Uniontown, Ohio; and her brother and his wife, William and Terri Fowler of Bowling Green, Kentucky. Funeral services will be held at 10:30 AM on Monday, December 16, 2002 at Bethany Baptist Church, 1000 Lincoln Avenue at South Pennsylvania, Lansing. Interment will follow in Rose Hill Cemetery. Ann’s family will receive friends from 2-4 and 6-8 PM on Sunday, December 15, 2002 at the Estes-Leadley Greater Lansing Chapel, 325 W. Washtenaw, Lansing.
