Baker, Maurice C.
East Lansing, MI
Died on Saturday, September 11, 2004, surrounded by his family at his home of 50 years. Dad was born and raised in Lansing. A graduate of Central High School, Class of 1939, he was an active organizer and participant in their many reunions including this year’s 65th. He served in the Army’s 69th Division in Europe, including the Battle of the Bulge. He returned to Lansing, and entered the dry cleaning business. He owned and operated Bon Fides Dry Cleaners in Lansing, then Twichell’s Cleaners and Tailors in East Lansing. For over 35 years, he and his wife Marian provided outstanding quality and service to their loyal customers, always treating everyone cheerfully, as well as with dignity and respect. A man of integrity, Dad lived his beliefs; he honored his family and his faith. He was a devoted husband to Marian, the love of his life for 55 years until her passing in 1996. His faith was constant for 83 years as he and Marian were members of St. Paul’s Episcopal Church. He served in many capacities on various boards and as an usher. He believed in and cherished his many friends. He was a friend who was there to share your triumphs as well as comfort you in your time of need. Friends throughout Michigan and his Gulf Shores Snowbirds will miss him. He was a volunteer escort for 17 years at Sparrow Hospital. He was a loyal and respected member of Lansing Lodge #33 F. & A.M., past High Priest of Capitol Chapter #9, a 32nd Degree Mason, and past Commander of Lansing Commandery #25 Knights Templar. He was a member and Interior Guide for the drill team for 42 years including a National Championship at one of the Tri-annual conclaves. He will be provided with a Commandery Escort at the funeral. These many strengths were made apparent as a result of his single flaw of casting Republican votes starting in 1952; however, it was a failing that was always corrected by the Democratic votes cast by the rest of the family. Dad was very proud of, and gloried in his children, grandchildren, and new great grandson. He is survived by Richard (Debra Nolan and daughters Justine (Mathew) & Vanessa Firnhaber-Baker & Kaitlin Nolan), Barry (Carol and sons William (Chris) and Jim (Becky) & great grandson Benjamin); and daughters Carol (Garth Keesler and daughter Sara) and Lisa (Greg Jones, son Becket and daughter Colleen); brother, Richard Huntington Baker and special nephew Rick Baker. Lourdes Anselmo was a close companion these past few years. He will be remembered as a warm, intelligent man who made everyone comfortable around him, a man with a rich sense of humor (except in politics), hundreds of friends and a deep abiding love for his wife, his family and his country. He leaves a void in all our lives, lives that were made richer by our being part of his. The family will receive friends at the Estes-Leadley Greater Lansing Chapel on Monday from 6-8 p.m. and again on Tuesday from 2-4 and 6-8 p.m. Funeral services will be held on Wednesday, September 15th at 10:00 a.m. at St. Paul’s Episcopal Church, 218 W. Ottawa St., Lansing. Burial will follow at Maple Grove Cemetery in Ovid, Michigan. Memorial donations may be made to St. Paul’s Episcopal Church Choir or the Sparrow Hospital Volunteer Program.
