Balaker, Shirley Ann
Lansing
Age 75, left this world August 21, 2003 following a lengthy illness. Shirley was the loving mother of daughter, Michelle A. Smith of Lansing; son, Gregory (Margaret) Wear of Lansing; daughters-in-law, Peggy Wear of Dimondale and Christine Wear of Benzonia, MI. She also leaves behind: ten grandchildren and ten great grandchildren. Shirley was preceded in death by her mother, Anna Mae Beach in 1996; husband, Charles Balaker in 1991; son, Robert W. Wear, Jr. in 1998 and brother, Robert Kline in the year 2000. She lived a life of giving and caring to whomever passed her way. Shirley was an avid antique collector and dealer for many years. She was also employed for several years at the Lansing Country Club. Shirley was a member of the VFW Ladies Auxiliary. She was a great lover of her dogs and will be deeply missed by all. Memorial services will be held at 6:30 p.m. Tuesday, August 26, 2003, at South Church of the Nazarene, 401 W. Holmes Road, Lansing. Arrangements by the Estes-Leadley Greater Lansing Chapel.
Stiles, Mary D. Allen
Lansing, MI
Age 92, passed away on September 29, 2002. She was born on May 7, 1910 in Chesaning, MI, the daughter of Dr. Fred J. and Lois O. (Bowerman) Allen. She was a 1929 graduate of the U of M School of Dental Hygiene; a former member of the Lansing Country Club and the University Club; and an active member of First Church Christ Scientist of Lansing; a member of the U of M Alumni Club. She is survived by: her husband of 65 years, Charles G. Stiles; daughters, Mary Sue (Robert) Porter of Grand Ledge and Bonnie Christensen of TN; grandchildren, Roderick C. (Dana) Porter of Grand Ledge, Pamela Loeb of TX and Charles G.S. (Tracey) Christensen of TN; great grandchildren, Alex, Michael and Samantha; brother, Dr. R. David (Maxine) Allen of Owosso; sisters, Beatrice Crane of Southfield and Barbara Rutt of AR; and many nieces and nephews. Cremation has taken place and there will be no services. The family suggests cards and condolences be sent to Mary’s husband, Charles G. Stiles. Memorial contributions may be made to a charity of one’s choice. Mary Ann Balasses
Lansing, Michigan
Age 82, passed away on Monday, August 16, 2004. She was born on April 6, 1922 in Greenville, MI to Martin VanBuren and Elizabeth Harriet (Ryger) Cook. Mrs. Balasses was very involved with her class reunion committee from Old Central High School, Class of 1940. She is survived by: son, Daniel G. (Stacy) Balasses; daughter, Karen L. Balasses; Machelle Yuncker “Golden Child” who was just like a daughter; brother, Richard M. (Betty) Cook of San Diego, CA; sister, Ruth Pino of Laingsburg; best friend, Sally Tellier “Aunt Mary Margaret” and her beloved dog, Ollie. Mrs. Balasses was preceded in death by: her husband, Daniel on August 24, 1980 and her parents. Memorial services will be held at 6:30 p.m. on Thursday, August 19, 2004 at the Estes-Leadley Greater Lansing Chapel. The family will receive visitors one hour prior to the service at the funeral home on Thursday. For those who wish, memorial contributions may be given to the American Cancer Society or to Ele’s Place in memory of Mrs. Balasses.
Duling, Eugene “Gene”
Holt, MI
Born on May 6, 1929 in Lansing, the son of Emory and Maud Duling, passed away on March 7, 2005. Gene retired from General Motors in 1991. He was a volunteer firefighter in Holt for over 25 years and served on the Delhi Parks Board for many years. He was also a founding member of the illustrious “Holt Hobo’s”, spending many a weekend up at the cabin. Gene is survived by his wife of 58 years, Donna; daughter, Peg (Steve) Jenkins; son, Bruce (Lois) Duling; and brother, Roger Duling. He was preceded in death by his brothers, Emory and Lauren; sister, Faith; and grandson, Phillip. He will be greatly missed by his grandchildren, Bill (Karen) Duling, Tammy (Bill) Sullivan, Tom (Andrea) Duling, Angie (Mike) Yankowski, John Whalen, Steven Jenkins, Jerry Jenkins (currently serving in Iraq); and great grandchildren, Amber Graham, Zachary Duling, Colton Yankowski, Tyler Duling, Steven Smith and Chris Smith. The Duling family wishes to extend a special thank you to the Ingham County Paramedics for their care and compassion. The funeral service will be held at 1:00 p.m. on Thursday, March 10, 2005 at Holt United Methodist Church, 2321 N. Aurelius Road, Holt. The family will receive friends from 4-8 p.m. on Wednesday at the Estes-Leadley Holt/Delhi Chapel. In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to the Holt United Methodist Church or the Holt Library.
McCaige, Daniel L.
Holt, MI
By God’s grace, he was called to his eternal home on May 29, 2003 at the age of 63. He was born on April 19, 1940 in Lansing, and had been a resident of the Holt area most of his life. Dan was a 30-year member of St. Matthew Lutheran Church, serving his Lord in various capacities. He was the Vice President/Treasurer at Michigan Millers Mutual Insurance Company, retiring in 1997 after 38 years of service. Dan graduated from Everett High School in 1959. He married his junior high sweetheart and they have shared 43 years of love and friendship. He was dearly loved by survivors: his wife, Barb; 2 children, Kellie (Tim) Mowers and Dan (Brenda) McCaige; 7 grandchildren, Kevin, Jordan and Kara Mowers, Jessica, Daniel, Mitchell and Jamison McCaige; mother, Ilene McCaige; sisters, Barb (Keith) Prater, Bonnie (Doug) Batchelor; brother, Marc (Carole) McCaige; in-laws, Fern McLain, Lila Costigan, and Bob and Bev Norris and many loving extended family members and friends. Dan was preceded in death by his father, Earl and twin brother, Dale. A service of victory will be held at 1:00 pm. Tuesday, June 3, 2003, at St. Matthew Lutheran Church, 2418 N. Aurelius Rd., Holt, with The Rev. Herbert G. Geisler officiating. Interment will follow in Chapel Hill Memorial Gardens. The family will receive friends at the Estes-Leadley Holt/Delhi Chapel from 2-4 and 6-8 p.m. Sunday, and from 6-8 p.m. on Monday. Gerke, Stanley A.
Lansing, MI
Age 56, passed away on July 17, 2002. The son of Edward and Mary Ann (Bell) Gerke. He was born on December 26, 1945. Mr. Gerke was a graduate of Michigan State University and a lifelong resident of Lansing. Mr. Gerke served in the U.S. Army and was a veteran of the Vietnam War. He was employed at General Motors for over twenty-five years. Stanley was a dedicated father, husband and friend with a great love for his family. He is survived by: his wife of 34 years, Mary; children, Jeffery (Lisa) of Indianapolis, IN, Jennifer (fiancé, Matt Bennett) Gerke of Chicago, IL, Jonathan of Lansing, and Janice of East Lansing; brother, Frederick of Chicago, IL; half-brother, Howard (Margery) Cook of Lansing; godparents, Ernest (Betty) Banning of Williamston; and several nieces, nephews and cousins. The funeral service will be held at 10:00 a.m., Saturday, July 20, 2002 at the Estes-Leadley Greater Lansing Chapel, with The Rev. William F. Renfrew officiating. Interment will follow in Mt. Hope Cemetery. The family will receive friends at the funeral home from 2-4 and 6-8 p.m. Friday. Memorial contributions may be made to the American Heart Association in memory of Stanley Gerke.
Sheldon, John D.
Lansing, MI
Age 92, passed away at the Michigan Masonic Home in Alma on Dec. 11, 2002. He was born July 16, 1910 in Charlotte, MI. John was a member of the Masonic Lodge, Shriner’s and was a 33rd Degree Mason. He was a Ham Radio operator for several years (WA8MVH) and was employed at Fisher Body Corp. for 33 years, retiring in 1965. Surviving are: Wife, Madeleine; Daughter, Elizabeth (Liz) McLellen (Wayne); Son, R. Keith Sheldon (Kathy); and Daughter, Martha Esters; 11 Grandchildren; 18 Great Grandchildren; and 9 Great Great Grandchildren. Memorial services will be held at 1:00 p.m. Saturday; Dec. 28, 2002 at Mt. Hope United Methodist Church; 501 E. Mt. Hope Ave. with Mr. Scott Merritt officiating. Memorial contributions may be made to Shriner’s Hospitals for Crippled Children. Arrangements by Estes-Leadley Greater Lansing Chapel.

Age 75, passed away on Thursday, February 21, 2002. He was born on March 16, 1926 in Lansing, and has been a lifelong resident. He was preceded in death by: his parents, Randall and Savada (Gilliam) Stewart; and sister, Katherine Lockley. He leaves to mourn his passing: brother, Linton (Lois) Stewart of Lansing; nephew, Randall (Michelle) Stewart of Lansing and their children, Ty-Ti-Anna, Randall, Jr. and Shawn McClain; and a host of other friends and other family members. Funeral services were held at 2:30 p.m., on Monday, February 25, 2002 at the Estes-Leadley Greater Lansing Chapel. Interment was in Mt. Hope Cemetery. The family received friends on Sunday, February 24, 2002 from 2-5 p.m., at the funeral home.
Edwards, Gordon L.
Holt, MI
Born October 6, 1924 in Lansing, the son of Claude E. and Grace M. (Hicks) Edwards, passed away on January 11, 2005, at the age of 80. Gordon served in the U.S. Navy during WWII (he was one of four brothers to serve simultaneously), and was employed as a tax assessor for the State of Michigan and the City of Lansing. He was an active member of the First Presbyterian Church of Holt, where he served as Deacon. He was also a longtime food bank volunteer and an active member of the Holt Kiwanis Club, serving as past president. Gordon was preceded in death by his parents and 3 brothers, Gayle, Frank, and Gary. Surviving are: his wife of 55 years, Arleen (Roth); daughter, Vicki Edwards; sons, Rick (Sandra) Edwards and Greg (Theresa) Edwards; grandchildren, Sarah, Susan, Annamarie, Alexis, Brian, Stephanie, and Brent; 4 great grandchildren; brother-in-law, Ralph Roth; and several nieces and nephews. Funeral services will be held at 2:00 p.m. on Monday, January 17, 2005 at the First Presbyterian Church of Holt, 2021 N. Aurelius Road, with the Rev. Dr. Bruce A. Brooks officiating. Interment will follow in Maple Ridge Cemetery. The family will receive friends at the Estes-Leadley Holt/Delhi Chapel on Sunday from 2-4 and 6-8 p.m. and from 1-2 p.m. on Monday at church. Memorial contributions may be made to First Presbyterian Church of Holt.
