Balzer, Nellie M.

Age 89, joined her beloved husband, Walter on Sunday, September 2, 2001. She was born on July 17, 1912 in Mt. Pleasant, the daughter of Earl and Mabel (Boyer) Holloway. Nellie was a lifelong resident of the Holt area, and was a member of the First Presbyterian Church of Holt, Order of Eastern Star, Irish American Club, the American Business Women's Association, and the Odd Fellows Rebecca Lodge. She was retired from Jewett Insurance in Mason, where she worked as an insurance underwriter and office manager. Nellie is survived by: 4 daughters, Joyce (Marlow) Kahres of Holt, Bonnie (Richard) Radway of East Lansing, Dianna (Joel) Klein of Lansing and Vickie (Larry) Vinson of Holt; son, Jerry D. Balzer of Holt; 12 grandchildren; 10 great grandchildren; 2 sisters, Norma Towns of Eaton Rapids and Violet Kapa of Novi. She was preceded in death by her husband, Walter H. Balzer, and son, Jack Balzer. A funeral service was conducted by The Rev. Dr. Bruce A. Brooks, at 2:00 p.m. Wednesday, September 5, 2001, at the First Presbyterian Church of Holt, 2021 N. Aurelius Rd., with interment in Maple Ridge Cemetery. The family received friends at the Estes-Leadley Holt/Delhi Chapel from 2-4 and 6-8 p.m. Tuesday. Memorial contributions may be made to Ingham Hospice in memory of Nellie M. Balzer.
Eisele, Vivian Gladys
Cadillac, MI

Age 92, passed away on January 28, 2004 in Cadillac. She was born on February 23, 1911 in Union Town, IL. She served as a WAC in the U.S. Air Force from 1944 to 1947. Vivian dedicated her life to the Disabled American Veterans, and other veteran organizations. In 1947, she became a member of the Capitol City Chapter #8, DAV, serving as commander in 1955; she was elected State Commander of the DAV in 1975, the first woman in the USA to hold these 2 positions. In 1955 she also assisted in forming the Lansing Council of Veterans Organizations. She was preceded in death by: husband, Edward Eisele, son, Richard Hidey, and daughter-in-law, Geraldine Hidey. Surviving are: son, John (Sally) Hughes, III of Holt; daughter, Betty Klinker of Cadillac; 6 grandchildren, Jennifer (Mark) Fergason, John Hughes, IV, Jennifer (Brian) Stiles, Janie Kelly, Karen Klinker and Bradley Klinker; 7 great grandchildren; and several nieces and nephews. The family would like to extend a special thank you to her friends, Keith and Lucy Mosher, and their daughter, Brenda. Funeral services will be held at 12:00 Noon on Saturday, January 31, 2004, at the Estes-Leadley Greater Lansing Chapel, with The Rev. Pam Mathieu, of Mt. Hope United Methodist Church officiating. Interment will follow in Gunnisonville Cemetery. The family will receive friends at the funeral home from 7-9 p.m. Friday. Cook, Nathan Joseph "Nate"
Lansing, MI
Beloved Son, Brother and Cherished Friend, age 23, passed away on Sunday, November 25, 2001. Nathan was born on September 24, 1978 in Lansing, MI. Surviving are: mother, Marietta Cook; brother, Corey Cook; beloved niece, Calysta Cook; grandmother, Irene Causley; aunt, Cheryl Causley; uncles, Joe and David Causley; special friend, Delfina Rodriguez. Nate will be sorely missed, but will remain a Cherished Memory in the hearts of many. Funeral services were held at 11:30 a.m., Thursday, November 29, 2001 at Central Free Methodist Church, with the Rev. Bart Leu officiating. The family received friends from 2-4 and 6-8 p.m., on Wednesday, November 28, 2001 at the Estes-Leadley Greater Lansing Chapel. Gazan, Daniel B.
Glen Cove, NY

He was born on February 26, 1967 in Grayling, Michigan and was a 1985 graduate of Grand Ledge High School. Daniel was an associate with the New York law firm of Jeffrey L. Goldberg, P.C., who represented many police officers and firefighters in state and civil service matters, died Wednesday, November 7, after an extended battle with cancer. He was 34. During a five-year career with the Goldberg firm, he assisted civil service employees who had been permanently disabled through job-related injuries in obtaining disability retirement benefits. He also represented members of police and fire departments who claimed sexual discrimination, harassment or bias. Several of the major cases on which he worked are currently in federal courts. A native of Michigan, Mr. Gazan was a determined and dedicated athlete, who was a defensive lineman in college and continued to play semi-professional football even while practicing law. He was also a body builder and participated in martial arts. After attending Murray State University (Murray, Kentucky) and Davenport Business College in Lansing with a focus on business management, he spent a year at the Thomas M. Cooley Law School in Lansing, and then transferred to the Jacob D. Fuchsberg Law School at Touro College in Huntington, New York, where he won awards for jurisprudence and trial advocacy. While at Touro, he also attended a summer law program at Cambridge University in England. Mr. Gazan is survived by: his parents, Harold and Nancy Gazan of Lansing; brother, Paul (Lisa) Gazan; and sister Elaine (James) Gazan Briley. A memorial service in honor of Dan was held at 3:00 p.m., Sunday, November 11, 2001 at St. Paul's Episcopal Church, 218 W. Ottawa St., Lansing, MI., with the Rev. Clayton Thomason officiating. Memorial contributions may be made to the MD Anderson Cancer Center, 1515 Holcolmbe Blvd., Houston, TX 77030 or to a charity of one's choice. Arrangements by the Estes-Leadley Greater Lansing Chapel.
Watters, Helen M.

Age 89, passed away on July 23, 2002. She was born on August 6, 1912 in Saginaw to Clarence and Olive (Church) Nelson. Helen was co-owner of H&M Bible & Gift Center in Holt for 28 years. She was preceded in death by: her husband, Carlton; 3 sisters; and 2 brothers. She is survived by: children, Carl “Deak” (and friend, Fran) Watters of Houghton Lake and Patricia (Keith) Hamilton of Mecosta; grandchildren, Tim (Candy) Watters, Steve (Charlene) Watters, Sue (Tim) Piper, Doug (Mary) Hamilton, Bruce (Diane) Hamilton, and Ann Hamilton; 17 great grandchildren; 1 great great grandson; twin sister, Hazel Spangler of Centerville, OH; sister, Louise Linn of Lansing; sisters-in-law, Louise Allen and Dorothy Marshall; and many nieces and nephews. As per Helen wishes cremation has taken place and a memorial service will be held at a later date. Memorial contributions may be made to Hospice of Lansing or Hospice of Dayton. Bandt, Colman
Mason, MI
Age 80, passed away on Tuesday, February 26, 2002 at his home. He was born on January 3, 1922 to Albert and Mable (Bergens) Bandt. He married Beulah Cogswell in 1945. Coleman served his country in the Army during WWII, where he received a Purple Heart. He retired from Michigan Bell after 38 years. Along with his wife, Coleman is survived by: his children, Suzanne, Mike, Patricia and Melissa; grandchildren, James, Michael, Heather, Corey, Shawn, Jason and Ben; great grandchildren, Kelsey, Annie Marie and Michael. A funeral service was held at 11:30 a.m., on Friday, March 1, 2002 at the Estes-Leadley Holt/Delhi Chapel. Interment was in Leek Cemetery. The family received visitors from 2-4 and 6-8 p.m., on Thursday, at the funeral home.

Age 78, passed away on Saturday, February 22, 2003. She was born on May 2, 1924 to Nelson G. and Mary A. (Fuller) Lloyd in Holt, MI she spent her later years in Harrison, MI. Dorothy was a former member of the Faternal Order of Eagles (F.O.E) Ladies Auxiliary, American Legion Ladies Auxiliary and the Moose Chapter 1804 all of Harrison, MI. She is survived by daughter, Lois (Bob) Davis; grandchildren, Diane McHugh, Dawn Crofoot, Michael Cerchia, Tracy Sigola, Bill (Tammy) Reed, Rick (Lisa) Reed, Todd (Jenny) Reed, Devin (Rosie) Davis and Holly (Steve) Grace; numerous great grandchildren; sister, Erma (Clarence) Schnaubelrauch; niece, Alice (Ed) McGowen and many other nieces and nephews and very dear friend, Wesley Miller. Dorothy was preceded in death by her first husband, Harold "Ike" Reed; husband, Clifford Gardner; son, William Reed; grandson, Robert Follick; granddaughter, Michelle Leece and brothers, John, Robert and Howard Humphrey. Funeral services will be held at 10:00 a.m. Wednesday, February 26, 2003 at the Estes-Leadley Holt/Delhi Chapel. Interment will follow in Maple Ridge Cemetery. The family will receive visitors from 2-4 and 6-8 p.m. on Tuesday at the funeral home. For those who wish memorials may be given to the American Cancer Society or Ele's Place.
