Minor, Lewis J., Ph.D..
Lansing, MI
1914 - 2002. On St. Patrick's Day, Sunday, March 17, 2002, a great Irishman entered eternal life. Dr. Lewis J. Minor was born in Harbor Beach, Michigan on October 24, 1914. He lived his life as a devout family man, husband, father, teacher, businessman, mentor, scholar, supporter, role model, leader, benefactor, and most importantly, a true friend. He was a genuine human being. Dr. Minor is survived by his wife of 63 years, Ruth E. Minor (Angell). They were married on February 11, 1939. They have eight children, Kathleen (James) Swanson, Bryan (deceased) (Jeanne), Ruth Ann, Carol, Michael (Edwina), Josephine, Rosalie (Wayne) Pontz, and Mary (Michael) Manista; 19 grandchildren (one deceased); and 21 great grandchildren. Surviving also is Dr. Minor's sister, Sally Egan; sisters-in-law, Frances Minor and Frances Angell; and numerous nieces and nephews. Dr. and Mrs. Minor found the L.J. Minor Corporation in Cleveland, Ohio in September 1951. His plan was to make food bases (chicken and beef) that would improve on and, eventually, replace soup bases. For the first time in history, chefs were able to use instant stocks to make foods that met the quality standards of "classical cooking" established by Auguste Escoffier. In starting his company, Dr. Minor stated: "The tenets upon which I shall build my business will be honesty, integrity, accuracy, kindness, punctuality, courtesy, friendliness, and cleanliness. I will endeavor always to be fair and helpful not only to employees, my management team and stockholders, but also to customers, government agencies and competitors." Ten years after founding his company, Dr. Minor returned to school, this time as a Ph.D.. student in Michigan State University's food science department. He earned his Ph.D. in 1964 and became an assistant professor in MSU's School of Hotel, Restaurant and Institutional Management, where he taught food science, nutrition, food safety, and food flavor evaluation, half time for 20 years. Some of his memorable messages to students included: "Aim for the eagle rather than shoot at the rat"; "Accuracy is the key to success"; and "Quality is remembered long after the price is forgotten." Dr. Minor was promoted to full professor and then, when he retired in 1984, he was designated a professor emeritus in the School of Hotel, Restaurant and Institutional Management, which has become The School of Hospitality Business at Michigan State. Dr. and Mrs. Minor are both philanthropists, supporting higher education with student loan funds, scholarships, professorships, and endowed positions. They are the Supreme Benefactors of The School of Hospitality Business at Michigan State University, including an endowed Chef de Cuisine position, and an endowed Master of Science program, The Michael L. Minor Master of Science in Foodservice Management. They have also supported numerous other charitable and philanthropic organizations. As the head of the Minor Family, mentor to academic and industry leaders, professor emeritus of Michigan State University's School of Hotel, Restaurant and Institutional Management, and founder of the L.J. Minor Corporation, Lewis J. Minor was one of hospitality's benefactors. Dr. Minor's story is not of himself alone, but also of his partner and wife, Ruth Minor, a woman of great charm, a homemaker, mother of their eight children, and a businesswoman who struggled along with her husband to see him succeed. An era has ended and we celebrate and rejoice in his life and their life together. Old Irish Blessing "May green be the grass you walk on, May blue be the skies above you, May pure be the joys that surround you, May true be the hearts that love you." Requiescat in Pace (May he rest in peace). The Minor family wishes to personally thank Dr. James Lyne and Dr. Thomas Jamieson for their excellent care and genuine friendship. Special thanks is also due to all Ingham Medical Center physicians, nurses, and other staff members, who gave exceptional care to Dr. Minor, as well as the compassionate support of the family. The funeral mass was celebrated at 10:00 a.m. at St. Mary Cathedral, 219 Seymour Street, Lansing. Interment was in Rock Falls Cemetery in Harbor Beach, Michigan. The family received friends from 2-4 and 6-8 p.m., on Wednesday, March 20, 2002 at the Estes-Leadley Greater Lansing Chapel.
