Banks, Margaret K. “Granny Banks”

Onondaga, MI

Age 96, passed away in Lansing on Wednesday, April 7, 2004. She was born October 2, 1907 in Big Rapids, MI. a daughter of Joseph and Rose (Samon) Brown. Margaret enjoyed reading and reciting poetry, especially nursery rhymes; she loved cats, doing her nails, getting perms, baking cakes, singing and reading. She is survived by 8 grandchildren; Jacqueline (Clair) Howe, Richard (Sheryl) Simons, Mitchell (Evelyn) Simons, James Simons, Shirley (Alex) Mueller, Daniel Simons, Charles (Helen) Simons, and John Simons; 15 great grandchildren; several great great grandchildren; her sister, Regina Astleford and several nieces and nephews. Preceding Margaret in death were 3 husbands; 1 sister; her daughter, Ardena Lucille Simons; and 2 great grandchildren, Mark Mueller and Betsy Ann Howe. A memorial service for Margaret will be held at a later date. Arrangements by the Estes-Leadley Holt/Delhi Chapel.

Barker, Wilbur S.

New Port Richey, FL

(Formerly of Lansing, MI)

Age 81, died Thursday, February 20, 2003 in Hudson, FL. He was born in Lansing, MI. He was a salesman with 29 years of service at Sears, an Army Veteran of World War II, serving 4 months in the European Theater, and Custodian with nine years of service for the Board of Education in Lansing. He was a lifetime member of the VFW and the Fraternal Order of Eagles 1039, Lansing. Survivors include his wife of 60 years, Alice (Ellsworth); a son, Rex, Shaftsburg, MI; two daughters, Cherry Cushing, Salt Lake City, UT; and Diane Wright, Lansing, MI; a sister, Wilma Boughner, Grand Ledge, MI; a brother, Roy, East Lansing, MI. Nine grandchildren and nine great-grandchildren. Memorial services will be conducted by Rev. Peter N. Robinson at 10:00 a.m. on Saturday, August 30, 2003 at the Pilgrim Congregational Church, 125 S. Pennsylvania Avenue, Lansing. Arrangements by the Estes-Leadley Greater Lansing Chapel.

Steinbart, Walter

Lansing, MI

At the age of 84, God called him home on June 3, 2003. He passed away as he lived his life, with character and dignity. Born in Germany, July 4, 1918, Walter immigrated to America in 1951. He worked as a bricklayer and a builder. A man of deep faith, he was an active member of Emanuel First Evangelical Lutheran Church, supporting the German service and serving on the Board of Elders and other committees. Always devoted to his family, he will be greatly missed by his loving wife of 48 years, Hedy; his children, Dory Steinbart and Willie (Cindy) Steinbart; and his grandsons, of whom he was immensely proud, Trevor and Kyle Miller, and Austin and Trent Steinbart. They will always treasure the family vacations they shared. Walter leaves behind his sisters in Germany, Erica Born and Anni Hennig and family; and his cousins and their families in Michigan. Funeral services will be held at 1:00 p.m. on Friday, June 6, 2003 at Emanuel First Evangelical Lutheran Church, 1001 N. Capitol, Lansing, with Walter lying-in-state from noon until 1:00 p.m. The family will receive friends at the Estes-Leadley Greater Lansing Chapel on Thursday from 2-4 and 6-8 p.m. For those desiring, memorial contributions may be made to Emanuel First Evangelical Lutheran Church.

Gardner, Charles

Lansing, MI

Age 72, passed away on Tuesday, December 25, 2001. He was born on March 18, 1929 in Greenfield, Tennessee, the son of K. Albert and Charlotte (Keel) Gardner. He is survived by: wife Pauline; son, Charles (Penny) Gardner; daughter, Virginia (Steve) Houser: 5 grandchildren; 1 great grandson; and sister. Funeral services will be held at 1:00 p.m., Saturday, December 29, 2001 at the Estes-Leadley Greater Lansing Chapel with the Rev. Dr. Gordon Weller officiating. Interment will follow in Glendale Cemetery. The family will receive friends from 6-8 p.m., Friday, December 28th, at the funeral home. Memorial contributions may be made to a charity of one's choice.

Barnhart, Marguerite (Davis-Goyt)

Holt, MI

Age 81, passed away on Monday, February 3, 2003. Born on December 31, 1921 to Truman and Florence (Parker) Goyt. Marguerite worked for the Heifetz Pickling Company and for John Henry Publishing she was also member of Al-Alon. She is survived by her husband of 36 years, Robert Barnhart; children, Sue (Larry) Bowen, Lee (Tammy) Davis, Terry (Anna) Davis of California, Bob (Sherrie) Davis, Gary (Carol) Barnhart, Terry (Connie) Barnhart and Debra (Paul) Oliver; 18 grandchildren and 16 great grandchildren. Marguerite was preceded in death by her parents; two sisters, Marilyn and Betty and one brother, Tim Goyt. A memorial service will be held at 2:00 p.m. on Saturday, February 8, 2003 at the Estes-Leadley Holt/Delhi Chapel. The family will receive visitors from 1 p.m. until service time at the funeral home. For those who wish memorial contributions may be given to the Eaton County Medical Care Facility in memory of Marguerite.

McKrill, Donald J.

Perry, MI

Age 78, passed away on March 6, 2003. He was born on April 6, 1924 in Lansing, the son of Ford and Bernice Irene (Alford) McKrill. Donald was a veteran of WWII, having served in the U.S. Army and earned a purple heart and 2 bronze stars. He was preceded in death by his wife, Pearl in 1973. Surviving are: sister, Juanita (Al) Zimmerman; 3 brothers; and dearest friends, David (Rose) Beardsley, David Abood and Melissa Komm. Funeral services will be held at 10:00 a.m. on Monday, February 10, 2003 at the Estes-Leadley Greater Lansing Chapel with Chaplain Gary A. DeVries officiating. Military honors will be provided by Olds-Higgins Post #3727, V.F.W. Interment will follow in Carson City Cemetery. The family will receive friends at the funeral home one hour prior to the service on Monday.

Cone, Laura

Holt, MI

Laura Margaret Cone, a resident of Great Lakes Christian Home, Holt, MI died at the Hospice of Lansing, Residence on April 8, 2002 at the age of 91. Laura was born on May 16, 1910 in Rudyard, MI to Will and Annie Leonard. She is survived by: three sons, Dr. F. John "Jack" (Robin) Allaire of Great Falls, MT, Ronald L. Allaire of Destin, FL, and J.B. "Jerry" (Sharon) Allaire of Holt, MI; nine grandchildren; and ten great grandchildren. She was preceded in death by: husbands, Francis J. "Chic" Kaine, J.W. "Doc" Allaire and Col. Sidney L. Cone; sisters, Ruth Knowles Champion and Ifie Rose; brothers, L. Howard and Gordon Leonard; sister-in-law, Stephanie Leonard; and daughter-in-law, Mary Lou Allaire. Laura lived and worked many years in Paw Paw, MI, and was a member of the Presbyterian Church. She retired to Lake Wales, FL and then to Holt, MI for the past seven years. She enjoyed making new friends and playing bridge wherever she resided. Laura was also a prolific knitter of afghans, sweaters, mittens, scarves, booties and dishcloths for her offspring, friends and charities. She had generously made hundreds of caps for newborns at Lansing hospitals and mittens for charitable organizations. Laura was thoughtful and kind and always enjoyed doing something nice for others. She especially loved visiting with her children, grandchildren and great grandchildren. Her family and friends will always remember her kind deeds and her wonderful sense of humor, which stayed with her until the end. Cremation has taken place. A memorial service was held on April 14, 2002 at 3:30 p.m., in the chapel at Great Lakes Christian Home, 2050 S. Washington, Holt, MI, with Chaplain Rev. Robert Palmer officiating. Inurnment was in Riverside Cemetery in Sault Ste. Marie, Michigan. In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to Great Lakes Christian Home, 2050 S. Washington, Holt, MI 48842 or the Hospice of Lansing, Residence, 3411 Stoneleigh Drive, Lansing, MI 48911. Arrangements by the Estes-Leadley Holt/Delhi Chapel.

Christensen, Darwin M.
Dimondale, MI

Born September 5th, 1919, Darwin M. Christensen joined with his heavenly father on May 25th, 2003. He greatly admired the miraculous beauty of nature, expressed through his love of fishing and the outdoors. “Dar” worked many years for Sealtest Dairy as one of the last milkmen with a horse-drawn wagon before opening Lansing Radio and TV Sales and Service. He was a front-line machine gunner in the United States Army at the battle of the Bulge and one of the few remaining heroes of World War II. After retirement in 1981, he and his wife summered for 21 years on Drummond Island, MI. He spent 63 years with his lifelong soulmate, Pauline (Whited). Together they raised four children, Sandra (Fred) Sandberg, Linda (Harold) Browning, Susanne Cudney and Cathy Patterson. He was a proud grandpa of 10 grandchildren and 22 great-grandchildren. Darwin has two surviving siblings, his sister Bonnie Rose and his brother Lester Christensen. He was preceded in death by his parents, three sisters and one brother. Memorial services will be held at 2:00 p.m. on Wednesday, June 11, 2003 at the Estes-Leadley Greater Lansing Chapel, with Pastor Roy Castelbuono officiating. The family will receive friends from 1:00 – 2:00 p.m. on Wednesday at the funeral home. Inurnment will take place in Dimondale Cemetery. In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to the Seventh-Day Adventists Church, Elevator Fund, 504 Ann, East Lansing, MI 48823, in memory of Darwin M. Christensen.
