Age 82, passed away on March 6, 2003. He was born on March 23, 1920 in New Pine Creek, Oregon, the son of Luther and Ella (Cannon) Clark. He was employed by General Motors for over 30 years, before retiring in 1978 and was a member of Union Local #652. He was preceded in death by: his wife of 56 years, Stephanie M. Clark; 1 grandchild, Jessica Barnes; 3 brothers; and 1 sister. Surviving are: 4 daughters, Lorraine (Al) Grill of Lansing, Ellen Jo (Al) Snauko of Lansing, Suzanna (Norm) Gray of Sunfield and Candace Briggs of Holt; 2 sons, Roy (Patti) Clark of Jackson and Edward (Janet) Clark of Holt; 14 grandchildren; 7 great grandchildren; brother, Criss (Phyllis) Clark of Alturas, CA; and several nieces and nephews. Funeral services will be held at 2:00 p.m. on Tuesday, March 11, 2003 at the Estes-Leadley Holt/Delhi Chapel with the Rev. Fr. Jose Mundadan officiating. Interment will follow in Maple Ridge Cemetery. The family will receive friends from 5-8 p.m. on Monday at the funeral home. Memorial contributions may be made to the American Heart Association.
Hanson, Billy J.
Holt, MI
Age 56, passed away on June 9, 2002. Billy was born on May 5, 1946. Billy served in the U.S. Army in the Vietnam War, receiving a Purple Heart. He loved military memorabilia and his hobby was collecting guns. He was preceded in death by his mother, Rozell. Surviving are his wife of 28 years, Sue; son, John; father, Marcus; brother, Ronald; sister, Cora Iskra. A funeral service was held at 12:00 p.m., on Friday, June 14, 2002 at the Estes-Leadley Holt/Delhi Chapel. Interment followed in Deepdale Memorial Gardens. The family received friends from 2-4 and 6-8 p.m., on Thursday at the funeral home
Jennings, DDS Edward B.
Holt, MI
Age 75, beloved husband, brother, father and grandfather went to join our Lord and Savior on January 9, 2003. He was born in Toledo, Ohio on July 26, 1927, the son of Frederick Joseph and Lillian Eleanor (Riehle) Jennings. He was raised in Aurelius, and after graduating from Mason High School, he served in the U.S. Army. He graduated from the University of Michigan Dental School and spent two years practicing dentistry in the Navy before opening his own practice that he maintained for 30 years in Holt. He was active in the community, serving on the Holt School Board, the Dart Bank Board of Directors, and was also active in Kiwanis. He enjoyed golfing, camping, gardening and spending time with his grandchildren. He was preceded in death by: his parents; and brother, Lawrence “Dutch” Jennings. He is survived by: beloved wife, Monica; sons, Brian (Susan) Jennings of Williamston, MI and Steven Jennings of Birmingham, AL; daughters, Shelly (Patrick) Robinet of Livonia, MI, Debbie (Todd) Pentecost of Holt, MI and Denise (Michael) Martin of Grand Rapids, MI; 11 grandchildren; and brother, Herbert “Skip” (Anne) Jennings of Grand Rapids, MI. Funeral services will be held at 10:00 a.m. on Tuesday, January 14, 2003 at Messiah Lutheran Church, 5740 W. Holt Road, Holt, with Chaplain Eugene L. Reddel and the Rev. John A. Schinkel officiating. Interment will follow in Deepdale Memorial Gardens. The family will receive friends from 7-9 p.m. on Sunday and from 2-4 and 7-9 p.m. on Monday at the Estes-Leadley Holt/Delhi Chapel. Memorial contributions may be made to Messiah Lutheran Church, Ingham Hospice or Camp Highfields.
Cleeves, William R., Jr.
Lansing, MI
On July 4, 2003, William R. Cleeves, Jr. achieved his independence, and is now in the loving arms of the Lord. He was born on March 22, 1922 to William R. and Lyda (Cross) Cleeves. He was a Police officer with the Lansing Police Department, and was a Deputy with the Ingham County Sheriff Department, as well as being a Deputy in Alaska. After retirement from the police force, he worked for Annand Security. Mr. Cleeves was a member of the Morley S. Oats Post #701 V.F.W., and the Capitol City Post #12 American Legion. He was an avid hunter and member of the NRA. He supported many charities, and was a veteran of WWII, serving in the U.S. Navy. Surviving are: daughter, Pamela Ross of Lansing; son, William R. (Barbara) Cleeves, III of Roscommon; daughter, Darcy (Terry) Kelly of Tallahassee, FL; daughter, Christina (Rick) Parker of Greenville; 10 grandchildren and 14 great grandchildren; sister, Helen Hallford of Missouri; 3 brothers, Donald Cleeves of Lansing, Gerald Cleeves of Rives Junction and Paul Cleeves of Cummings, MI; step-children, Jennifer, Scott, Becky, Greg, and Laurie; and special friend, Marsha Hodges. He was preceded in death by his parents, and brother, Richard. There will be no services. Memorial contributions may be made to the Capital Area Humane Society in memory of William R. Cleeves, Jr.
Watson, Alga G. “Shorty”
Lansing, MI
Age 91, passed away on April 15, 2003. He was born on May 29, 1911 in Bassetts, Texas, the son of Fred and Cordelia (Bratton) Watson. Alga was employed as a carpenter for the State of Michigan for many years, and enjoyed gardening. He was a Veteran of WWII, serving in the U.S. Navy and was a member of D.A.V. He was preceded in death by his wife, Marjorie E. Watson in February 2000. Surviving are: son, Dr. Gary L. (Ellie) Watson of Laingsburg; granddaughters, Dawn Marie (Paul) Watson-Faverman, Cherie (Colin) Frank and Kris (Tony) Drumheller; great grandson, Drew Drumheller; and brother, Bratton Watson. The family wishes to express special thanks to all those who participated in helping with his care. Funeral services will be held at 12:00 p.m. on Friday, April 18, 2003 at the Estes-Leadley Greater Lansing Chapel. Interment will follow in Hurd Cemetery. Cooley, Clifford C.
Holt, MI
Aged 79, beloved husband, father, grandfather and great grandfather, went to be with his Lord and Savior on November 24, 2001 after a short bout with cancer. Mr. Cooley was born on May 5, 1922 in Belleville, MI to Charles E. and Bertha N. Eifert Cooley He resided his entire life in Holt where he met and married Maxine Reese in 1943. After attending Tri-State University in Angola, IN, he worked as an engineer for Dana Corp at Atlas Drop Forge in Lansing. He retired after 42 years in 1983 as Manager of Product Engineering and Quality Control. He was a gifted woodworker who enjoyed designing and making things for his family. Most important, he was a Godly man who lived his life with intergrity and honor. He faithfully attended Holt Baptist Church where he taught Sunday School for various ages. We thank our Lord for the many years we were blessed with his presence in our lives. We all will cherish his memory always, but especially Maxine, his wife of 58 years. He is also survived by sons, Robert of Bath, Arthur (Connie) of Adrian, James (Kathy) of Lansing; daughters, Carolyn (Kerry) Darling of Lansing and Shirley (David) Hoover of Holt; 9 grandchildren, Shelby (Tom) Stoll of Hillsdale, Joshua and Christopher Cooley of Adrian, Sarah (Andy) Luce of East Lansing, Caleb and Joash Cooley of Lansing, Michelle, Jennifer and Melissa Darling of Lansing; great granddaughter, Ashlynn Stoll of Hillsdale; brother, Paul (Nancy) of Gowen; sister, Marjorie (Pen) Cowardin of Massachusetts; family friend, Rosemary Johnson. A funeral service will conducted by the Rev. Reid Kitchen of the Baptist Church of Hadley, MI at 10:00 a.m. on Tuesday, November 27, 2001 at the Estes-Leadley Holt/Delhi Chapel with interment to follow at Chapel Hill Memorial Gardens. The family will receive friends from 2 to 4 and 6 to 8 p.m. on Monday at the chapel. Magdalene Squires, age 84, of East Lansing, formerly of Mason, died on Saturday, March 2, 2002. Before retiring, Miss Squires was self-employed, providing in-home care and companionship to the elderly. She was born in Mason on December 10, 1917; the child of Carl B. and Alma E. (Foler) Squires. Magdalene is survived by many cousins and dear friends in the area. Funeral services in celebration of her life were held on Tuesday, March 5, 2002 at 2:30 p.m., at the Estes-Leadley Holt/Delhi Chapel, 2121 N. Cedar Street, Holt, with the Rev. Wesley Emerson of Eden United Brethren Church officiating. The family received friends at the funeral home on Monday, March 4, 2002 from 5-8 p.m. Those desiring may wish to consider a contribution to the Wheatfield United Methodist Church, 520 E. Holt Road, Holt, MI 48842, where Magdalene was a member many years ago.
Watters, Dorothy E.
East Lansing, MI
Age 95, died October 30, 2002. Born May 20, 1907 in Lansing, MI. Graduated Michigan State University in 1929 with a Degree in Home Economics. She was preceded in death by her husband, Joseph B. (1972) and her granddaughter, Kimberly (1992). Her greatest joy in life was watching her children and grandchildren participating in sports. She also enjoyed sewing, Tole Painting and reading mystery novels. Surviving are 4 sons, Joe of Mt. Pleasant, Doug (Nancy) of Lansing, Fred (Therese) of E. Lansing, Bill (Kathy) of Mason, and a daughter, Kay (Harry) Todd of E. Lansing; 19 grandchildren, Joe, David, Cheryl, Jodi, Debbie, Doug, Matt, Kelly, Mark, Joe, Pat, Tom, Mike, Matt, Andy, Bill, Jessica, Corinne, Allyse, and 17 great grandchildren. A Memorial Mass will be celebrated at 12 Noon Saturday, November 2, 2002 at St. Thomas Aquinas Catholic Church, 955 Alton Road, East Lansing.
