Age 72, passed away on June 10, 2002. She was born on April 24, 1930 in West Virginia, the daughter of William Austin and Marcia (Carmichael) Green. She had worked as a Nurse in Sheltering Arms Hospital and at Dr. Woodruff's office both in Athens, OH and Dr. Siegle's office in Grand Rapids and Dr. Vitu's office in Saginaw. She was preceded in death by: brothers, William, Melvin and Joe Green; and sister, Pearl Green. She is survived by: her husband of 50 years, Bob; son, Robert M. of Saginaw; daughter, Terry (John) Fenner of Sterling; grandchildren, Jennifer, Michelle, Angela and Christopher; brothers, Robert Green of Albany, OH and Kenneth Green of The Plains, OH; sisters, Jean Daines of Las Vegas, NV and Kitty (Edwin Jr.) Sweeney of Stewart, OH. Private graveside services were held at Chapel Hill Memorial Gardens. Memorial contributions may be made to a charity of one's choice. Arrangements by the Estes-Leadley Greater Lansing Chapel.
Clever, Edwin E. "Ed"

Age 93, passed away on Saturday, June 8, 2002. He was born January 15, 1909 in Charlotte, MI. a son of Ernest E. and Mae K. (Miller) Clever. Mr. Clever was proud of the fact that he was a member of the first class of Holt Public Schools, and remained very interested in, and supportive of Holt Public Schools until the very end. Mr. Clever was also very active in the Holt Kiwanis, of which he was a founding member. He was also a member of Lansing Lodge # 196 B.P.O. Elks. Ed served as a Lt Col. in the Michigan State Troops, was a member of Theta Tau Fraternity, and had served on the Board of Directors at Holt State Bank for 40 years. Ed was the former co-owner of Meissner Lumber Co. of Lansing, was the past V.P. of the Michigan Retail Lumber Association, and was the former President of Progressive Affiliated Lumberman. Survivors include 2 sons, Richard Clever of San Jose, CA. and James (Pamela) Clever of Benton Harbor; 1 daughter, Patricia Ann (Jack) Durliat of Castle Rock, CO.; 8 grandchildren, 8 great grandchildren, along with several nieces, nephews, and several other extended family members. He was preceded in death by his wife Mary I. Clever in 1998; 3 brothers, Frank, Gerald, and Gordon Clever, and 1 sister, Elsie Stevenson. Mr. Clever was a long-time member of Immaculate Heart of Mary Catholic Church, 3815 S. Cedar St., Lansing, where the Funeral Mass was co-celebrated, by the Rev. Fr. Larry Delaney and the Rev. Fr. Jose Mundadan on Wednesday, June 12, 2002 at 10:00 a.m. The Rite of Christian Burial followed at Maple Ridge Cemetery in Holt. The family received friends at the Estes-Leadley Holt/Delhi Chapel on Tuesday from 5-7:30 p.m. with a Scripture service at 7:30 p.m. Those who wish may make memorial contributions, in loving memory of Ed, to the Holt Community Food Bank, P.O. McLellen, V. Wayne

Age 73, died May 9, 2003. He was born in Ionia, MI Jan. 19, 1930. He was a 1949 graduate of Lansing Eastern High School; a Veteran of the Korean Conflict, serving in the U. S. Army; and was a member of Mt. Hope United Methodist Church. He was a Past Commander of American Legion Post #269 and a self-employed custom home builder and remodeler. He was civic minded and committed to Meridian Township, having been a former member of the Meridian Township Planning Commission as well being involved in other Township issues. Surviving are his wife of 45 years, Elizabeth “Liz”; Sons, Gary (Robin) McLellen of Clinton, UT, Mike (Mary) McLellen of Kentwood, MI; 7 Grandchildren, Jamie, Trent, Christin, Megan, Jennifer, Ian, and Tyler; 3 Great Grandchildren. He was preceded in death by a grandson, Gary, II. Memorial services will be held at 11:00 a.m. Wednesday, May 14, 2003 at Mt. Hope United Methodist Church; 501 W. Mt. Hope with Mr. Scott Merritt officiating. Interment and Military Honors will take place on Friday at Ft. Custer National Cemetery. The family will receive friends at a memorial visitation at the Estes-Leadley Greater Lansing Chapel from 2-4 and 6-8 p.m. Tuesday. Climo, Jacob Joseph

Jacob Joseph Climo, Professor of Anthropology at Michigan State University, was born in Cleveland Ohio on December 29, 1945. He died on April 22, 2003 at age 57. The son of Leonard S. and Adeline (Seltzer) Climo, he received his B.A. from Miami University in Ohio and his M.A. and Ph. D. degrees in Anthropology from Michigan State University. He taught at Michigan State University for 27 years. He was preceded in death by his mother Adeline (Seltzer) Climo and his father, Leonard S. Climo. Surviving are his wife, Martha (Aladjem), his son Abraham (Avi), his son Simeon (Simi) and his sister, Miriam (Climo) Katz, his nephew, David Katz and niece, Chana Katz and numerous wonderful cousins, aunts and an uncle. He also leaves many close and wonderful friends in America and Israel who were a tremendous support to him and his family throughout his life and illness. Professor Climo’s early academic career took him to many parts of the world-a year in Yucatan, Mexico, where he studied agrarian reform. He also studied in Guatemala, and Vera Cruz. He lived in Addis Ababa, Ethiopia for two years where he taught anthropology at Haile Selassie I University and researched the affects of a government health project on the Afar nomads. He spent his last sabbatical in Israel studying the relationships of adult children who had immigrated to Israel and their aging parents in Detroit. Over the years, he was a guest lecturer in Israel and Mexico. He was an active member and a fellow of the American Anthropological Association. In 1994-95 he was the president of the Association for Anthropology and Aging. He was also a fellow of the Gerontology Society of America and a member of the Israel Studies Association. Dr. Climo is the author of Distant Parents. He co-edited with Marea Teski Labyrinth of Memory: Ethnographic Journeys. He also co-edited with Maria G. Cattell Social Memory and History Anthropological Perspectives. The latter focused on ways in which memory reconstructs the past and constructs the present. In addition to his academic pursuits, Dr. Climo had a wide range of interests. He loved writing short stories, singing and performing in musical productions, cooking delicious soups and planting seedling pines. One of his greatest pleasures was engaging his two sons, Avi and Simi, in lively intellectual discussions about social issues, politics and family. Even from his hospital bed he would visibly light up when his sons came by to visit and have one of these conversations. Another one of his deepest pleasures was taking long walks on the Mediterranean beach of Bat Galim in Israel. He was active in ritual life at his synagogue Kehillat Israel, Lansing and was involved in finding Congregation Kehillat’s home on Forest Road. He frequently sang the Kol Nidre Service on Yom Kippur. He also was a past president of Michigan State University Hillel Jewish Student Center. We shall all miss him and certainly never forget him-both his laughter, jokes and his tears! Funeral services will be held at 10:00 a.m. Friday, April 25, 2003 at the Estes-Leadley Greater Lansing Chapel, with Dr. Morton Hoffman, Rabbi Emeritus officiating. Interment will follow in Evergreen Cemetery. Merrigan, Joyce O.

Age 61, passed away on March 8, 2002. She was born on February 5, 1941 in Bryson, NC, to Carl and Emma (Clampett) Thomas. She married Richard L. Merrigan in 1960, and they moved to Holt in 1968. Joyce worked for G.M. for 25 years. She was a very loving wife, mother, grandmother and great grandmother who will be missed by: husband, Richard L. Merrigan; children, Angela (Jerry) Clement, Richard M. (Julie) Merrigan; Emma (Rob) Dillenbeck; grandchildren, Tina, Justin, Seth, Bradley, Amanda, Charlotte, Sydney and Nicholas; great grandchildren, Talon and Kayden; brothers and sisters, Robert, Marie, Fairellen, Ray, Jeri, Rick, Randall and Daris; and many special nieces and nephews. She was preceded in death by her parents and a sister, Gladys Johnson. A funeral service was held at 1:00 p.m., Tuesday, March 12, 2002, at the Estes-Leadley Holt/Delhi Chapel, with the Rev. Dr. Bruce A. Brooks of First Presbyterian Church of Holt officiating. Interment followed in Maple Ridge Cemetery. The family received visitors at the funeral home from 2-4 and 6-8 p.m., on Monday, March 11, 2002.
Carrier, C. Bruce

C. Bruce Carrier passed away on October 15, 2003 surrounded by the love of his family. He was preceded in death by the love of his life, his wife, Betty. Surviving are: daughters, Sue Ann (Jerry) Bulmer, Charleen (George) Ostrom and his son, Craig (Virginia) Carrier. Bruce had seven grandchildren, Steven (Debbie) Pakkala, Scott (Michele) Pakkala, Kelly (Mary) Carrier, Sheela (Chris) Carrier, Natalie (Jerimi) Miller, Sonja (Joseph) Place, Adrienne (Jeremiah) Sinke, and Travis and Trevor Bulmer; and honorary grandchild, Diann (Wende) Vestula. He had 16 great grandchildren and was looking forward to number 17 due in December. Also surviving are his stepmother, Elaine Carrier, sister, Sally Carrier of Louisiana; and brother, Ernie Lane Carrier of Texas. He also leaves behind his loving friend, Joyce Oberg. Bruce retired from General Motors Plant Protection after 42 years of service. He was a member of the First Presbyterian Church since childhood, where he met his wife, Betty. He was also a member of Capital Lodge of S.O. #66, F.&A.M. Bruce was an avid reader, with is favorite subject being history, especially the Civil War. Contrary to what he used to tell his children and grandchildren, he was not a Civil War Veteran, but a Veteran of World War II, serving in the U.S. Navy in the Pacific and was wounded at Guadel Canal. His service in the Navy began a life long love of the water and boats. Funeral services will be held 1:00 p.m. on Saturday, October 18, 2003 at the First Presbyterian Church, 211 N. Chestnut in Lansing, with the Rev. Tony Patrick officiating. The family will receive friends from 2-4 and 6-8 p.m. on Friday at the Estes-Leadley Greater Lansing Chapel, with a Masonic Service being held at 7:30 p.m. Memorial contributions may be made to First Presbyterian Church of Lansing in memory of C. Bruce Carrier.

Age 91 passed away on September 26, 2002. Born November 22, 1910 to Albert and Bessie Freitag. Mrs. Carroll was a member of the Delhi Senior Citizen Group. She is survived by, daughter, Marilyn Fairbotham of Holt, and son, James E. (Vadia) Carroll of Eaton Rapids; grandchildren; Ed Griffin, Phyllis Sandefur, Carroll Hileman, Connie (Ted) Shutes, Dan (Karen) Fairbotham, Duane (Sharon) Fairbotham, Doug (Julie) Fairbotham, Molly Carroll, and Megan Carroll; 15 great-grandchildren. Mrs. Carroll was preceded in death by her husband, Edward M. Carroll, daughter, Joan Griffin, son-in-law; Neil (Joe) Fairbotham; sister; Lottie Terry. A funeral service will be held at 12:00 noon on Monday, September 30, 2002 at the Estes-Leadley Holt/Delhi Chapel. Interment to follow in Maple Ridge cemetery. The family will receive friends from 2 to 4 and 6 to 8p.m. on Sunday at the funeral home. Memorial contributions may be donated to Hospice of Lansing in memory of Mrs. Carroll.
Cooper, Billie G. (Kissee)

Age 89, passed away on October 27, 2001, after a lengthy illness. She was born on July 21, 1912 in Mildmay, Canada. She married Leon "Whitey" Kissee in 1933, and, after his death, she married George E. Cooper in 1973. She owned and operated Gibb's Shoe Repair, M.S.U. Shoe Repair, and M.S.U. Bootery until retiring in 1985. She was preceded in death by her parents; first husband, Leon "Whitey" Kissee; daughter, Tonya; son, Tim; sister, Nell; grandson, Christopher Temple. She is survived by: husband, George; son, Terry (Susie) Kissee of Lansing; daughter, Tonnie (John) Temple of East Lansing; sister, Jeanne Bowerman of Muskegeon; daughter-in-law, Carolyn Sue Kissee of Lansing; brother-in-law, Chuck (Dorothy) Kissee of Lansing; 12 grandchildren and 15 great grandchildren. A funeral service was held at 1:00 p.m. Thursday, November 1, 2001, at the Estes-Leadley Greater Lansing Chapel, with interment in Deepdale Memorial Gardens. The family received friends at the funeral home, from 12:00 p.m. until service time on Thursday. Memorial contributions may be made to the charity of one's choice.
