Terry, a warm, wonderful, and loving person, wrote the following poem to his wife for their anniversary.
To Lil, on our 30th
July 3, 2001
We started life together
In nineteen seventy-one,
The organ in the chapel played
“We’ve Only Just Begun.”
What did we think was out there
As we said “I do” that day?
We knew that nothing could go wrong,
We’d get through, come what may.
No heartaches would bedevil us,
No problems cause us tears,
And we knew it would be that way
For at least eighty years.
We built a little paradise
For only us to share,
And knew that nothing bad or sad
Would dare intrude in there.
But trouble came in anyway,
Your job, my legs, your Dad,
And tension pulls from every side
Upon the life we’ve had.
I often say the wrong thing,
Or I’m thoughtless, or I do
Some silly thing to make you think
P’r’haps I don’t care for you.
But when that happens, I’m so sad,
I’m filled with deep despair,
‘Cause I wish I Had let you know
I treasure us as pair.
I love you just so deeply,
I trust you know it’s true,
I’ve wed you so completely,
I’m not me without you.
It’s such a long time, thirty years,
Yet such a short time, too.
And still, with all the ups and downs,
I’m still in love with you.
All My Love,
Terry
