Robert James Grinnell
Mason, Michigan
Born April 5, 1931, the son of the late C. James and Lee Grace (Snyder) Grinnell, died January 25, 2005 after a most courageous battle with cancer. Bob has now left his earthly home to begin his eternal life with his Lord and Savior Jesus Christ. Bob served proudly in the U.S. Navy aboard the U.S.S. Toledo during the Korean Conflict and was employed by Wallace Opticians for 25 years, retiring in 1994. During retirement, Bob enjoyed golf, bowling, camping, music activities and time with his family. He also looked forward to their annual trip to Gulf Shores, AL. He enjoyed attending his children’s and grandchildren’s sporting events, concerts, music programs and other activities. Bob was a member of Bethlehem Evangelical Lutheran Church, where he was active in the Choir, Food Bank and the “Elves”. Surviving are: his loving wife of 50 years, Janenne; 4 children, Jim (Debbie), Steve (Kim), Lynda (Jim) Holberg, and Jennifer (Ron) Stauffer; 9 grandchildren, Tyler, A.J., Justin, Tiffany and Windi Grinnell, Joseph, Michael and Robbie Holberg, and Blake Stauffer; 1 great grandchild, Elijah Christiansen; special friends of his grandchildren, Amy Poineau, Becky McCollum, Dean Christiansen and Jeralyn Garvey. Also surviving are: sister, Patricia Thompson of Taylor Mill, KY and her children, Kathleen and Jeffrey; sister-in-law and brother-in-law, Carl and Carolyn Malkewitz of Grand Ledge; and several nieces and nephews. The family wishes to extend a special thanks to the medical professionals at Ingham Regional Medical Center, especially the staff on 5 North and the staff at the Breslin Cancer Center. Funeral services will be held at 12:00 p.m. on Friday, January 28, 2005 at Bethlehem Evangelical Lutheran Church, 549 E. Mt. Hope, Lansing, with the Rev. James R. Lichtenberger and the Rev. Wayne J. Knockel officiating. Interment will follow in Delta Center Cemetery. The family will receive friends from 2-4 and 6-8 p.m. on Thursday at the Estes-Leadley Greater Lansing Chapel. Bob inherited the love of gardening from his parents, so your gift of flowers is welcome and appreciated. Pall Bearers will be Jim, Steve, Tyler, A.J. and Justin Grinnell and Joseph, Michael and Robbie Holberg. Groesbeck, Harold L.
Spring Lake, formerly of Lansing, MI
Age 86, passed away Sunday October 21, 2001. He was born September 2, 1915 in Clinton, MI, the son of Harold E. and Susan E. (Eddy) Groesbeck. Harold is survived by: sons, James L. (Sharon) Groesbeck of Spring Lake and Thomas H. (Linda) Groesbeck of Lansing; grand daughter, Chris (David) Wolfe of Twin Lakes; grandsons, James H. Groesbeck of Spring Lake and Thomas H. (Milissa) Groesbeck of New Port Richey, FL; great grandsons, Jordan Groesbeck, Jordan Wolfe, Adam Wolfe and Jacob Wolfe. Funeral services were held at 1:00 pm on Wednesday, October 24, 2001 at The Estes-Leadley Greater Lansing Chapel, with the Rev. Dr. Susan K. Weier of Pilgrim Congregational United Church of Christ officiating. Interment followed at Deepdale Memorial Gardens with Military Honors by Morley S. Oates Post 701 VFW Color Guard. The family will receive friends at the funeral home from 11:00 am until service time on Wednesday. Memorial donations may be made to the Morley S. Oates Post 701, VFW Color Guard.
Gross, Janet Louise (Deihm)
Holt, MI
Went to be with our Lord, on January, 17, 2004 at the age of 76. She was a loving mother and grandmother who cared deeply for family and friends. She spent several months at Hospice where our family grew and new friendships were made. She is now and angel watching over and protecting us all. She retired from Michigan National Bank in 1989. She is a charter member of Holt Church of the Nazarene, where she had held several offices in her younger years. She is a member of the Mason-Holt Eagles #3734, where she held office and took much pleasure in helping with benefits for others and Special Olympics. She is preceded in death by: her husband, Harold F. Gross and a brother, Glenn Deihm. She is survived in life by: her first husband, Ira Daily; sister-in-law, Betty Deihm; brother, Duane (Ann) Deihm; 3 children, Judy A. Daily, David L. Daily and friend John Stevens, and Steven J. (Jane) Daily; grandchildren, Ami B. Daily, Ballard D. McGuire II, Harold S. McGuire, Jeff Pine, Mark Pine, Jason Pine, Kelly Caltrider and several great grandchildren. Funeral services will be held at 2:00 p.m. on Wednesday, January 21, 2004 at the Estes-Leadley Holt/Delhi Chapel. Interment will follow in Maple Ridge Cemetery. The family will receive friends from 6 to 8 p.m. on Tuesday at the funeral home. In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be given to the Hospice House of Mid-Michigan.
Grover, Roger L.
Lansing, MI
Age 65, died January 29, 2003, with his wife and children at his side. Born May 30, 1937 in Big Rapids, MI, Roger was a long-time Lansing resident and M.S.U. retiree. Roger attended Mt. Hope Church where he was an active volunteer with Prison Ministries under the direction of Pastor Len Hill, whom Roger considered a very special friend. With insurmountable health problems, Roger answered correspondence and wrote Bible studies to be used in jails and prisons. He was a talented writer and felt very blessed to be able to use his gift to serve his Lord and Savior. Roger is survived by his wife and best friend, Gail; children, David Grover of Lansing, James (Theresa) Grover of Jackson, Diana Tammen of Holt, Stephanie Mathson of Lansing and Craig Mathson of Potomoc, Maryland; granddaughters, Elizabeth, Kristine, and Gabrielle Grover; sister, Nyla (William) Umphreys of Grand Rapids; and many nieces and nephews. According to his wishes, Roger has been cremated and a memorial service will be held at a later date. In his memory, donations may be made to Mt. Hope Church Prison Ministries, 202 S. Jakovac, Robert
Lansing, MI
Bob at the age of 48, went to be with his Lord on January 6, 2003. He was born on April 23, 1954 in Lansing, and had lived in Lansing for all of his life. Bob was a Grand Knight with the Knights of Columbus, and was on many committees at Church of the Resurrection. He was a Lansing Township Trustee, past board member for CATA, volunteer paramedic with Lansing Township, and a member of the Sigma Nu Fraternity. He was a graduate of Michigan State University, very active with the Special Olympics and was proud to be in the Army ROTC. Bob had been employed with William’s Auto World for over 30 years. Surviving are: his mother and best friend, Helen; 2 sisters, Teri Lynn Jakovac of Lansing and Tammy Jo Denise (Mark) Paquette of Lansing; and special nephew, Christopher Jakovac-Harris, with whom he was very close. He was loved and will be deeply missed and will be held close in our hearts forever. He was preceded in death by his father, George in 1995. The Funeral Mass will be celebrated by Fr. William Koenigsknecht at 10:30 a.m. Thursday, January 9, 2003 at Church of Resurrection, 1531 E. Michigan Ave., with the Rite of Committal in St. Joseph Catholic Cemetery. The family will receive friends at the Estes-Leadley Greater Lansing Chapel from 2-4 and 6-8 p.m. Wednesday, where the Rosary will be recited at 8:00 p.m. Memorial contributions may be made to Church of Resurrection Memorial Fund, in memory of Bob Jakovac.
Grow, Jean Carla
DeWitt, MI
Born on May 18, 1937 in Lansing, the daughter of Arnold Frederick and Alma Lucille (Olmstead) Spaeth, died on July 7, 2004 at the age of 67. She attended old Hurd School in DeWitt and graduated from Lansing Sexton High School in 1957. She married Everett “Whitey” Grow in December of 1963 and he preceded her in death in 1990. Jean was an assistant Brownie leader and was on the pool and dart team at Knob Hill. She was very supportive of her grandchildren’s involvement in horses and sports. She was preceded in death by: her parents; her husband; and her step-son, Everett D. Grow. Surviving are: daughter, Lucille (Rex) Britten; grandchildren, Chad, Nicholas, Tyler and Kaitlyn; brother, Ronald (Sandra) Spaeth; sister, Mildred Detzler; and step-mother, Wilma Spaeth of Williamston. Memorial services will be held at 1:00 p.m. on Wednesday, July 14, 2004 at Graham Community Church, 8920 W. Britton Road, Laingsburg, with the Rev. Mike Hixson officiating. Arrangements by the Estes-Leadley Greater Lansing Chapel.
Gudelsky, Leon
Lansing, MI
Age 90, passed away on August 18, 2002. He was born in Muskegon on March 1, 1912 to Komma and Martha Gudelsky. He married Marian Mead on January 1, 1938. He was manager of Thom McAn Shoes and she was bookkeeper and cellist. Leon entered the Army in 1942, serving in Europe and receiving the Bronze Star for his service in the 9th Infantry Division and the 466 Bomb Group in England. In 1945, Leon returned to Lansing to manage Daniels Jewelry until 1965, when he and his wife, Marian, went into business for themselves as Leon "G" Jewelry in East Lansing. Leon has always been an avid sports participant having played tournament tennis in Battle Creek, winning the championship. He also played basketball and refereed. They joined Congregation Shaarey Zedek in 1948, with Leon serving several offices on the board, and Marian being a life member of the Sisterhood for many years. They had also been members of Walnut Hills Country Club since 1957, both serving on the board of directors at various times. Leon is a life member of Lansing Lodge #66, F.& A.M. He was preceded in death by: 3 brothers, Marvin, Hilliard, and Justin. He is survived by his wife of 64 years, Marian; 1 nephew and several great nieces and nephews. A funeral service will be held at 2:30 p.m. Wednesday, August 21, 2002, at Congregation Shaarey Zedek, 1924 Coolidge Rd., East Lansing, with Rabbi Morton Hoffman officiating. Interment will follow in Evergreen Cemetery. In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to Congregation Shaarey Zedek in memory of Leon H. Gudelsky.
Guenther, Dorothy Eva
Lansing, MI
Age 86, passed away on Sunday, June 23, 2002. Dorothy was born on December 2, 1915 in Peterborough, Ontario, Canada. She grew up there and graduated from Peterborough Normal School in 1934. Mrs. Guenther subsequently earned a B.A. in Education from Western Washington University in Bellingham, WA. In 1956, a M.Ed. from the University of Hawaii in Honolulu in 1961, a Specialist in Education and M.S.W. from Michigan State University in 1967 and 1968, respectively. Mrs. Guenther taught school in Peterborough and Moose Factory, Ontario before going to Peace River, Alberta to work on an Anglican Sunday School Van. She then taught school in Peace River for two years before marrying E. Lynn Guenther, who was in the U.S. Army, on July 3, 1943 in Tacoma, WA. After WWII, the Guenthers lived in Bellingham, WA and Ames, IA, before moving to Hawaii in 1952. In 1962, the Guenthers transferred to East Lansing and Mrs. Guenther worked as a School Social Worker in the Lansing Schools from 1963 until she retired in 1979. She has been an enthusiastic traveler, Bridge player and member of the Spartan Alumni. Her husband preceded her in 1969. Surviving are two sons; Robert Lynn of Gaithersburg, MD and David Allen of Midland, MI; two grandchildren, Lisa Guenther of Midland and Raymond Brown of Louisiana; two great grandchildren, Megan and Ian Brown, both of Louisiana; along with two sisters, Pat Thornton of Halifax, Nova Scotia and Joan Hanson of Brantford, Ontario. Funeral Services were conducted by Pastor Frank W. Lyman, Jr. at 2:00 p.m. on Wednesday, June 26, 2002 at University United Methodist Church, 1120 S. Harrison in East Lansing. Interment followed at Evergreen Cemetery. The family received friends at the church, on the day of the service, for one hour prior to service time. Those who wish, may make memorial contributions to Friends of the Mildred B. Erickson Fellowship, which is the major source of financial assistance for returning adult students at M.S.U.
