Age 84, passed away on September 8, 2003. Mary was born on May 29, 1919 in Farmer City, Illinois, the daughter of Claude O. and Leona F. (Reeser) Douglas. She enjoyed doing arts and crafts. Mary was preceded in death by her husband, Maynard C. Guenther on December 23, 1999. Surviving are: daughter, Janet (Thomas) Spencer of Jackson; grandchildren, Thomas Spencer, Jr. of Lansing, Linda (Duane) Clemons of Lansing, Mark Spencer of Ohio, Melissa (George) Barrera of Lansing and Jason (Kris) Spencer of Jackson; 9 great grandchildren, Aaron, Amber and D.J. Clemons, Mark Jr. and Tiffany Spencer, Ashley, Siarra and Austin Spencer and Tia Barrera; 3 great great grandchildren; sister, Phyllis Neff; and several nieces and nephews. Graveside services will be held at 2:00 p.m. on Thursday, September 11, 2003 at Deepdale Memorial Gardens, with the Rev. Stephan Weinberger officiating. The family will receive friends from 11:00 a.m. until 1:00 p.m. on Thursday at the Estes-Leadley Greater Lansing Chapel. Memorial contributions may be made to a Hospice Program of donor’s choice.
Madzia, Ted J.
Venice, FL and Fenwick, MI
Age 68, passed away in Florida May 22, 2002. He was born in Middletown, OH Nov. 27, 1933 and had lived in Okemos for many years, graduating from Okemos High School and Michigan State University. He was a Veteran of the Korean Conflict, serving in the U.S. Army, and was a member of the San Pedro Catholic Church in Venice. He was associated with General Motors, Oldsmobile Div. for 28 years, retiring as Assistant General Sales Manager in 1993. Surviving are: Wife, Doris Ann; 5 Children, Rick William (Nancy) Madzia of Detroit, Gregg T. Madzia of Rochester, Tracey (David) Feil of Fenwick (Long Lake), Julie (John) Coe of Walled Lake, and Terri (Russ) Beck of Stephenson, VA; 15 Grandchildren; Mother, Josephine Madzia of Okemos; 2 Sisters, Mary Madzia of Lansing and Joyce Lundberg of Winter Park, FL. A Memorial Mass will be celebrated by Fr. Troy Nevins at St. Joseph Catholic Church, 409 S. Bridge St., Belding, MI at 11:00 a.m. Friday, May 31, 2002. Age 79, passed away on August 19, 2001, from Cancer. Mr. Guill was born February 14, 1922 in Lafe, Arkansas. He has had his second home in Thomson since 1995. He had been a lifelong resident of Lansing, Michigan. He resided in Englewood, FL from 1983 to 2001. He was owner/operator of Deepdale Memorial Park Cemetery. He belonged to the Masonic Lodge, with a 32nd degree (Shriner) thru the Scottish Right. He was a Knight Templer on the drill team. He was a Navy Communication Officer from 1943-1946. He is survived by three daughters and two sons; Gloria and Raymond Thomas, Michigan, Linda and Jerry Abidin, Michigan, Debra and Buddy Keller, Harlem, GA, Lloyd Sztanyo, Michigan, and Jeffrey L. Guill, Lansing, Michigan; and 21 grandchildren and 16 great-grandchildren. Funeral service will be at 2:00 p.m., Wednesday in the Curtis Funeral Home Chapel with the Rev. Mike Sutphin officiating. The body will be transferred to the Deepdale Memorial Park Cemetery in Lansing, Michigan. Donations may be made to the St. Joseph Hospice. Friends may call at the Curtis Funeral Home. The family will receive friends from 6-9 p.m. on Monday and Tuesday nights at the funeral home.
Gunn, Jeffrey David

Jeffrey David Gunn was born on December 18, 1970 in Lansing, MI and died on October 17, 2002 at the age of 31. Jeff was a lifelong resident of Holt and a Holt High School graduate. He worked as a flooring specialist and building trades; and loved spending time with his children, hunting and fishing on the family farm as well as up north, and being with his family and friends. Jeff was preceded in death by his mother, Carolyn; and grandparents, Wilbur and Dorothy Gunn, Phyllis Raymond and Melvin Bergey. Surviving are: father, Ervin Gunn; stepson, Alex; daughters, Alison and Ashley; and son, Justin; brothers, Jon and Jim (Angie), sister, Jodi; aunts, Diane (Earl), Janet (Marty) and Audrey (Greg); uncles, Frank and David; six nieces; grandfather, Don Raymond; several cousins; and many close friends. Funeral services will be held at 2:00 p.m. on Monday, October 21, 2002 at the Estes-Leadley Holt/Delhi Chapel with the Rev. Wesley B. Emerson officiating. Interment will follow in Mt. Hope Cemetery. The family will receive friends from 4-8 p.m. on Sunday at the funeral home. In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to his children’s education. A fund is being established and envelopes will be provided at the funeral home.

Age 82, passed away on January 18, 2004. She was born on December 6, 1921 in Everett, MI, the daughter of Ira and Ethel (Hale) Sample. Gladys was a life member of Eastern Star. She was preceded in death by: husband, Harvey; sons, James S. and Roger G.; her parents; 2 brothers; and 2 sisters. Surviving are: son, Harvey J. Gurd; 4 grandchildren; 8 great grandchildren; 6 step great grandchildren; several nieces and nephews; and special friend, Robert Bolenbaugh. Funeral services will be held at 12:00 p.m. on Friday, January 23, 2004 at Holt United Methodist Church, 2321 N. Aurelius Road, Holt, with the Rev. Lynn Grimes officiating. The family will receive friends from 2-4 and 6-8 p.m. on Thursday at the Estes-Leadley Holt/Delhi Chapel, with the Mason/Dansville Chapter #150 O.E.S. providing a service at 7:00 p.m. Memorial contributions may be made to Holt United Methodist Church in memory of Gladys M. Guthrie, Barbara J.
Lansing, MI
Age 70, passed away at her home on November 17, 2004. She was born on September 30, 1934 in Oklahoma City, OK. She had been employed as a legal secretary at the Thrun Law Firm from 1982 until her retirement in 1996, and had worked at the Capital Area Humane Society as a volunteer and as an employee for many years. Ms. Guthrie is survived by her beloved pets, Charlie Chaplin, Ushe, Sadie, Muffin and Rory, as well as many close and dear friends. A celebration of her life is being planned for spring, 2005. Interment of her cremains will take place on Tuesday, November 30, 2004, at 11:00 a.m. at Forest Lawn Memorial Gardens. In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to the Capital Area Humane Society, 7095 W. Grand River Ave., Lansing, MI 48906. Arrangements by the Estes-Leadley Greater Lansing Chapel.
Haar, Kathryn Louise (Morgan)
Lansing, MI
Age 80, passed away on Sunday, January 20, 2002. She was born on August 16, 1921 in Laingsburg, MI, the daughter of Floyd and Wilhelmina (Heiler) Morgan. Kathryn attended primary school in Laingsburg then transferred to St. Mary's in Lansing in the 7th grade and graduated in 1939. Mrs. Haar worked in several financial institutions in Lansing, including 20 years with First of America Bank, before retiring in 1984 as Vice President. She was a member of the Lansing Zonta Club for 25 years, was a member of the Lansing Economic Development Corporation at the time of the expansion and modernization of the Lansing Center, served on the Lansing Downtown Authority Board, and was a long-time member at St. Mary Cathedral. Survivors include her husband of 59 years, Russell Haar of Lansing; one niece, MaryAnn (Lou) Christensen and their son, Troy, all of Reno, NV; along with many other extended family members. Mrs. Haar was preceded in death by her parents; one sister, Mary Phyllis Moore and her husband Milford; along with several aunts, an uncle, and a nephew, Morgan Moore. The funeral mass was celebrated by Rev. Fr. Gerald Gawronski at 10:30 a.m., on Wednesday, January 23, 2002 at St. Mary Cathedral, 219 Seymour Avenue, Lansing. The family received friends at the church one hour prior to the service. The Rite of Christian Burial was in St. Joseph Catholic Cemetery. In lieu of flowers, those who wish may make memorial contributions to the Lansing Zonta Club Foundation, P.O. Box 20231, Lansing, MI 48901 or to Hospice House of Mid-Michigan, in loving memory of Kathryn Haar.

Age 84, passed away on Saturday, May 25, 2002 at Memorial Health Care Center in Owosso. She was born July 25, 1917 in Lansing, MI. the daughter of Albert and Lena (Zech) Riffel. Mrs. Harrison was a charter member of St. Stephen Evangelical Lutheran Church in Lansing and served for many years as the church's Librarian. She had worked for the State of Michigan, Dept. of Social Services, as a caseworker for many years. Survivors include: 2 sons; Keith (Diane) of Ft. Wayne, IN. and Jack (Sue) of Owosso; son-in-law, Charles Cassidy of Grand Ledge; 9 Grandchildren; 9 Great Grandchildren; Sister, Thelma Messenger; Sister-in-law, Jo Riffel, and several nieces and nephews. Fredericka was preceded in death by her husband, Martin C. Harrison; daughter, Carol Cassidy and her brother Fred Riffel. Funeral Services were held at 2:00 p.m. on Wednesday, May 29, 2002 at St. Stephen Lutheran Church, 2900 N. Waverly Rd., with pastor Gary A. Bunge officiating. Interment followed at Deepdale Memorial Park. The family received friends at the Estes-Leadley Greater Lansing Chapel on Tuesday from 2-4 and 6-8 p.m. Memorial contributions, in loving memory of Fredericka T. Harrison, may be made to the American Cancer Society.
Hudson, Jean Marie

Age 77, went to be with her Lord on April 12, 2002, born on December 16, 1924, to Frederick S. and Flossie G. (Kieffer) Sussex, in Lansing. First and foremost she was a loving and dedicated wife and mother. Jean was a member of the Holt United Methodist Church, the United Methodist Women and was the first secretary at North Aurelius School in Mason. She will be greatly missed by her family and friends. Jean leaves behind her loving husband of 57 years, Dorr; 4 sons, Thomas (Doris), Frederick, Ronald (Karen), Peter (Rhonda); she cherished her 7 grandchildren and two great grandchildren, Sonya Herrin and her children, Christine and Levi, Ryan, Joanne (Chris) Floyd, Tracy (Mark) Haskell, Richard, Karl and Bridget; she was proud to be the oldest of 17 brothers and sisters; she also had many, many nieces, nephews and other extended family members. A funeral service was held at 11:00 a.m. Wednesday, April 17, 2002 at the Holt United Methodist Church, 2321 N. Aurelius Rd., Holt, with the Rev. Lynn Grimes officiating. The family received visitors from 6-8 p.m. Monday and 2-4 and 6-8 p.m. Tuesday at the Estes-Leadley Holt/Delhi Chapel. Memorial contributions may be given to the Holt United Methodist Church in Jean’s memory.
