Hollandsworth, Claude A. “Holl”
Lansing, MI
Age 84, passed away on April 5, 2002 after a two-month battle with pneumonia, while wintering in Florida. He was born on March 19, 1918 in Greenfield, TN, the youngest son of Claude and Quinta Hollandsworth. He was brought to Michigan at the age of seven after the death of his parents. He joined the Navy in 1936 and served proudly for nine years through WWII. He married his childhood sweetheart on August 17, 1940. In 1945, he joined the Lansing Police Department and retired as Lieutenant after 26 years of service. Claude then worked for ten years as Director of Safety and Security at Sparrow Hospital, retiring in 1981. Claude loved the outdoors, woodworking and traveling during the winter months. He is survived by: his wife of 62 years, Shirley; two daughters, Holly (Wayne) Smith of Eaton Rapids and Jana (Michael) Kane of Jamul, CA; three granddaughters, Kimberly, Lindsay and Jennifer Smith, all of Eaton Rapids; one sister, Ann Lee of Lansing; and several nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by three brothers, William, Fred and Nicholas. Funeral services were held at 1:00 p.m., Friday, April 12, 2002 at the Estes-Leadley Greater Lansing Chapel, with the Rev. William Renfrew, Chaplain of L.P.D., officiating. Entombment followed at Deepdale Memorial Gardens. The family received friends from 2-4 and 6-8 p.m., Thursday, April 11, 2002 at the funeral home. Holland, Sr., Edward Bert
Lansing, MI
Age 77, passed away on Wednesday, January 30, 2002. He was born on January 8, 1925, the son of Bert and Barbara Holland of Ovid. He was been a resident of the Lansing area most of his adult life. He was an Oldsmobile retiree, and a WWII veteran. He will be most remembered for his keen wit and warm friendly smile. A loving husband to his wife, Shirley, he was preceded in death by: parents, Bert and Barbara Holland; wife, Josephine Ruth Holland; son, Timothy David Holland; and step-son, Randy McConnell. Surviving are: sons, James (Jonni) Holland of Arizona and Edward Bert (Marian) Holland, Jr. of Lansing; daughter, Terri (Doug) Holland of Lansing; step-daughters, Penny (Jim) Williams of Lansing and Jean (Don) Hart of Grand Ledge; step-sons, Greg and Bernie (Pam) McConnell, both of North Carolina and Ralph McConnell of Lansing; numerous grandchildren, great grandchildren, step grandchildren, cousins, nieces, nephews, and friends. A funeral service was held at 3:00 p.m., Sunday, February 3, 2002 at the Estes-Leadley Greater Lansing Chapel. The family received friends at the funeral home from 2-4 and 6-8 p.m., on Saturday, February 2, 2002. Memorial contributions may be made to Hospice House of Mid-Michigan.
Mendel, Robert David “Bob”
Lansing, MI
Our loving father and friend rose to the heavens above on Saturday, February 22, 2003 at the age of 63. He was born in Ann Arbor, MI on March 17, 1939 a son of David and Olga (Hein) Mendel. Bob was a 1957 graduate of Sexton High School, a Veteran of the U.S. Army and retired from the Lansing Police Department in 1990 after 25 years of service; his family will always remember him as Sgt. 381. After his retirement he continued to live an enjoyable life in the Lansing area with his family and friends. His daily love and talks will be painfully missed. Survivors include: 3 children, Suzanne of Lansing, Sara of Holt and Christopher Hans of Lansing; 3 grandchildren, John Adam, II and Elizabeth Mireles and Ruben Medrano, Jr., 1 brother Michael (Patricia) and 2 nephews, Eric and David. Bob was preceded in death by both of his parents. The family will receive friends at the Estes-Leadley Greater Lansing Chapel on Wednesday, February 26, 2003 from 2-4 and 6-8 p.m. Then on Friday, February 28th, at Noon, they will gather to remember his life at 428 E. Menchik, Elinor

Age 83, passed away on June 6, 2002. Ella enjoyed life to its fullest, never missing a Broadway show, the Metropolitan opera, or a concert. She was the quintessential New Yorker. Born July 2, 1918, she survived her husband of 48 years, Irving Menchik. She is survived by: her sons, Paul (Bettie) of Okemos and Mark (Barbara Evans) of Virginia; and her beloved grandsons, Daniel and Jeremy Menchik. Spackman, Marion F.

Born February 2, 1913 in New Milport, Pennsylvania. Died February 9, 2002 at the age of 89. Marion was the daughter of Merrill Biddle and Lois (Henderson) Biddle. She was preceded in death by her parents; special aunts and uncles, Guy and Kitty Sloppy and Dave and Jo Wright; her husband, Paul E. Spackman (March 1978); and brother, Dean C. Biddle (June 1967). Marion was an active member of Central United Methodist Church and previously Seymour Avenue and First United Methodist Churches. She retired from J.W. Knapp Co. of Lansing. Surviving are: sons, James (Brenda) of Laingsburg and Joseph (Nona) of Allegan; grandchildren, Renate (Brian) Smits of Canton and Kurt (Annie) Spackman of Evanston, IL; and great grandchildren, Marissa, Colton, and Melaina Smits. A memorial service was held at Central United Methodist Church. Loving husband, father and son, passed away on Wednesday, April 10, 2002 at the age of 19. He was born on March 17, 1983 and was a student of Everett High School. Memorial services were held at 4:00 p.m., Tuesday, April 16, 2002 at the Estes-Leadley Greater Lansing Chapel. The family received friends from 2-4 and 6-8 p.m., Monday, April 15, 2002 at the funeral home.
Holbrook, DeWayne Del "Hobie"
Grand Ledge, MI
Age 27, passed away on December 29, 2001. He was born on April 12, 1974 in Lansing, and lived in the Lansing area all of his life. Mr. Holbrook graduated from Holt High School in 1992, and has been employed at Farm Bureau Insurance Company. He was a member of Mt. Hope International Outreach, where he was active with the youth group, "Conquest". Surviving are: his parents, Brad and Mary Holbrook of Maryville, TN; brothers, Tom (Trudy) Holbrook of Maryville, TN, and Mark (Nanette) Hartman of Bath; grandmothers, Maxine Holbrook of Holt and Delores Carlson, as well as several nieces, Tessa, Tera, Abbi and Nichole; nephew, Jacob; aunts, uncles and cousins. He was preceded in death by his grandfathers, Delmonte R. Holbrook and DeWayne T. Carlson. A funeral service was conducted by Pastor Brad Swartout and Pastor Ricardo Torrez, at 1:00 p.m. Thursday, January 3, 2002, at Mt. Hope International Outreach, with interment in Deepdale Memorial Gardens. The family received friends at the Estes-Leadley Holt/Delhi Chapel from 2-4 and 6-8 p.m. Wednesday.
Hogan, Beverlee J. (Richards)
Okemos, MI
Age 73, a wonderful loving wife, mother, and grandmother, born April 14, 1929 in St. Johns, MI the daughter of Waldo and Marguerite Richards. Bev Hogan graduated from Lansing's, J.W. Sexton High School, in June, 1947. She retired from the State of Michigan, Dept. of Natural Resources in 1993 after 23 years of service. She liked to dance, play bridge, knit, golf, ski, bowl, and travel. She was preceded in death by their infant daughter, Brenda Sue, and her parents. Surviving are her husband of 53 years, Howard E. Hogan; 2 children, Sheryl (George) Sinas, Richard (Sharon) Hogan, 4 grand children, Thomas Sinas, Stephen Sinas, Gregory Hogan, and Kara Hogan. 2 Brothers, Reverend Charles (Ruth) Richards, of Bronson, MI and Dr. James (Marietta) Richards, of Libertyville, IL, Sister in law, Eugenia Sandy, and many nieces and nephews. A funeral service was held at 1:00 p.m. on Tuesday, July 2, 2002 at the Estes Leadley Funeral Home, Greater Lansing Chapel, with her brother, Rev. Charles Richards officiating. Interment followed in Deepdale Memorial Gardens. The family received visitors from 5-8 p.m. on Sunday and 6-8 p.m. on Monday at the funeral home. Contributions may be given to Sparrow Hospice or the American Cancer Society in Beverlee's Memory.
