Evelyn M. Newton
Evelyn M. Newton, age 94 of Rollin, passed away on Sunday, June 4, 2006 at Faith Haven Senior Care Centre in Jackson.
She was born on April 19, 1912 in Hillsdale County, Michigan to Harvey E. and Edna B. (Bringman) Russell. She married Lewis L. Newton on Sept. 27, 1932 in Hillsdale, and he preceded her in death on Feb. 27, 1970.
Evelyn lived her early life in Palmyra, MI, and over 50 years in Rollin. She enjoyed baking, cooking, crocheting and loved flowers.
Evelyn is survived by two sons, Cecil E. (Barbara) Newton of Jerome, Lyle L. Newton and Margaret Bishop of Horton, two daughters, Diane L. (John) Murphy of E. Liverpool, Ohio, Janet M. Mosher of Guymon, Oklahoma, eleven grandchildren, several great-grandchildren, several great-great-grandchildren, two brothers, Royce H. (Shirley) Russell of North Adams, Gerald J. (Kathryn) Russell of Arizona, one sister, Viola Beekel of Onsted, sisters in law, Ethel Russell of Addison and Rosemary Russell of Jonesville, many nephews, nieces and cousins. She was preceded in death by her husband Lewis, one son Donald L. Newton, four brothers, one sister and one son in law.
Funeral services will be held at 1:00 PM on Thursday, June 8, 2006 at the Brown-Van Hemert Funeral Home in Addison, with the Rev. Geri Litchfield officiating. Burial will take place at Woodstock-Sanford Cemetery, Woodstock Township, Lenawee County, Michigan. Visitation will be from 2-4 and 6-8 PM on Wednesday.
Memorial contributions are suggested to the donor’s choice.
Beatrice J. Hart
Beatrice J. Hart, age 69, of Cement City, passed away on Friday, May 12, 2006, at Pontiac Osteopathic Hospital in Pontiac. Born on May 11, 1937, in Jackson, she was the daughter of Melvin B. and Virginia M. (Shafer) King. She married Olen W. Hart, Jr. on June 22, 1972 in Brooklyn and he survives.
Beatrice lived at Vineyard Lake for 18 years, and then many years in Cement City. She graduated from Cement City High School in 1954. She was employed at GM for many years as an assembly line worker; worked at Addison Hospital and then at The Log Cabin in Brooklyn. She was a member of the Eagles Lodge of Brooklyn and enjoyed gambling, bowling and bingo.
Surviving besides her husband, Olen, are one daughter, Mindy (Tim) Hertzfeld of Jackson; two sons, Pete (Kim) Taylor of Michigan Center and Todd Taylor of Cement City; 15 grandchildren; 19 great-grandchildren; two brothers, Owen (Darlene) King of Harrison, Mich. and Otis (Kathy) King of Whites Creek, Tenn.; two sisters, Bernice Patterson of Mosherville, Mich. and Belinda King of Jackson; and nephews, nieces and cousins.
She was preceded in death by her parents; one brother, Melvin; one sister, Barbara; and one grandchild, Tyler.
Funeral services will be held at 11 a.m. on Tuesday, May 16, 2006, at the Brown-Van Hemert Funeral Home in Addison, with Pastor Drew Woods officiating. Burial will be made in Cement City Baptist Memorial Garden in Cement City. .
Merle J. Meads
Merle J. Meads, age 86 years of Onsted, passed away Wednesday, May 10, 2006 at his home. He was born on March 20, 1920 in Tecumseh, Mich., the son of Oscar and Mildred (Beaubien) Meads. Merle married Beatrice Blakley on January 13, 1940 in Angola, Ind. She survives.
Merle was a veteran of World War II, serving in the U.S. Navy. He was a member of D.A.V. of Adrian and Friends Church in Tecumseh. He enjoyed playing cards and telling stories to his grandchildren. Merle was a farmer and retiree from Peerless Gear of Clinton.
Surviving besides his wife, Beatrice, are their children, Dorothy (Clyde) Willtrout of Michigan Center, Sharon (Ron) Bowen of Petersburg, Edith (Larry) Nevins of Brooklyn, Dawn Meads of Onsted and Merle “Butch” (Sally) Meads of Onsted, 20 grandchildren, 35 great grandchildren, five great-great grandchildren, one brother, Robert (Betty) Meads of Adrian, two sisters, Wilma (Clarence) Randolph and Eula Woods all of Tecumseh and several nieces, nephews and cousins. He was preceded in death by his parents, two infant sons, three infant grandchildren, two brothers, George and Wilbur Meads, and one sister, Frances Campbell.
Funeral services were held on Saturday, May 13, 2006 at the Dunn Chapel, Brown-Van Hemert Funeral Home in Onsted with Pastor Daniel Kopke officiating. Interment followed at the Lenawee Hills Memorial Park in Adrian with full military honors conducted by V.F.W. 1584 Annis-Fint Post of Adrian. Memorials are suggested to the family of Merle J. Meads. H. Winifred Arksey
H. Winifred Arksey, age 82, formerly of Clarklake, passed away on May 11, 2006 at Arbor Manor Nursing Center. Survived by her husband, Randall Arksey who together owned and operated the Arksey Hardware Store in Brooklyn for many years, also celebrated 60 years of marriage.
Also surviving, one son, Rev. Dr. W. David Arksey and wife, Brenda of Chicago; sister, Marcia VanWagner of Vineyard Lake; sister-in-law, Elsie Taylor of Brooklyn.
Services were held at Nichols-Arthur Funeral Home on Monday, May 15, at 11 a.m. with the Reverend Christine R. Barnes officiating. Interment was at Roseland Memorial Gardens.
Donald Ray Knapp
Donald Ray Knapp, age 64, of Hillsdale, passed away Tuesday, May 2, 2006, at the Hillsdale County Medical Care Facility. He was born December 27, 1941 in Toledo, Ohio, to Chandler and Mary (Bowles) Knapp, and she survives in Brooklyn.
Don was a former produce manager at Kroger Food store, and a graduate of Brooklyn High School, class of 1960.
He is survived by two daughters, Andrea (Larry) Bricker of Reading and Debbie (Scott) Green of Post Falls, Idaho; six grandchildren; a sister, Linda (Dorr) Schuette of Brooklyn; brothers, Jim (Sharon) Knapp of Brooklyn and Mike (Betty) Knapp of Somerset; and nieces and nephews.
He was preceded in death by his father and brother, Leslie.
Funeral services were held May 5, in Hillsdale. Don will be greatly missed by his family.
Elizabeth “Betty” Loder
Elizabeth “Betty” Loder, age 87, formerly of Brooklyn, died Saturday, May 13, 2006 at Chelsea Retirement Community. She was born May 16, 1918 in Owosso, Mich., the daughter of Loy B. & Vida (Winn) Hackett.
She has lived in Chelsea since 1993, coming from Burton. She was the valedictorian of her Brooklyn High School class in the mid-1930s. Mrs. Loder graduated from EMU with a music major. She taught school for 37 years in the Atherton School district. She was a former member of Atherton United Methodist Church, where she was choir director, and was currently a member of Chelsea First United Methodist Church. Mrs. Loder was a member of the Michigan Education Association, and the Flint Theater Organ Club.
On June 29, 1943, she married Harold Milton Loder, and he preceded her in death on May 8, 1981.
Survivors include two sons, Keith (Diane) Loder of Niles, Mich., Wayne (Patricia) Loder of Milford, Mich.; a sister-in-law, Virginia Hackett of Brooklyn, Mich. ; four grandchildren, David (Wendy) Loder, Wendy (Travis) Stevanson; Christopher & Kathryn Loder; four great-grandchildren, Emily, Caroline, Taylor, Paige; and several nieces and nephews. She was preceded in death by two grandchildren, Stephanie and Stephen Loder; and two brothers, Winn Hackett and Loy J. Hackett.
A memorial service will be held on Friday, May 19, at 3 p.m. at the Chelsea Retirement Community, in Chelsea, with Rev. Beth Foster officiating. Burial will be at Tekonsha Cemetery, in Tekonsha, Mich. Memorial contributions may be made to the Chelsea Retirement Community or The Compassionate Friends. All arrangements by Cole Funeral Chapel, Chelsea.
Alice Jane Staub
Alice Jane (Gault) Staub, age 94, was received by her Lord May 9, 2006 with her family and loving staff of Arbor Manor Rehabilitation and Nursing Center at her side. Alice was born in Detroit on June 15, 1911. She married George Staub in Detroit on June 28, 1930 and he preceded her in death on August 2, 1981 after 51 years of marriage.
While living in Detroit Alice was secretary of the Grandale Presbyterian Church. They moved to Wamplers Lake in 1955. Alice was a member of the Brooklyn Presbyterian Church for 50 years and was treasurer for a number of years. She was a member of Eastern Star and was an accomplished quilter and knitter. She spent many hours of service at her church and making lap robes for the Veterans Hospital. Alice, George and their son, Bob, built Brooklyn Lanes at its current location in 1962, where she was an avid bowler until her late 80’s. Alice made her home at the Brooklyn Living Center for 10 years and Arbor Manor for three years. She enjoyed cards, bingo, many outings and the Senior Olympics.
Alice is survived by her sons, Robert (Kay) of Naples, Fla., Richard (Joanie) of Brooklyn; eight grandchildren, Kathi (Jonathan) Hopkins of Lewis, Colo., Lori (Brian) Rees of Sante Fe, New Mexico, Berta (Roger) Sadowsky of Napoleon, Terri (Joe) Jess of Matawan, Karol (Kevin) Major of Oak Grove Village, Ill., Beth (David) Rittershaus of Prescott Valley, Ariz., Angie (Russ) Henckel of Rockford, and Jill (Rick) Plate of Matawan; 18 great grandchildren, and two brothers, Lawrence (Betty) Gault and Gordon (Bernice) Fish of Detroit.
A Celebration of Alice’s Life will be held on Thursday, May 18, at the Brooklyn Presbyterian Church beginning at 11 a.m. with Reverend Robert Malsack officiating. We will continue the celebration with a luncheon at the church following the service. Memorial contributions may be given to the Arbor Manor Care Center Activities Department or Brooklyn Presbyterian Church. Interment will be at Acacia Cemetery, Beverly Hills, Mich.
Ronald V. Kyser
Ronald V. Kyser, age 81 of Barryton, formerly of Brooklyn, passed away peacefully Tuesday, May 2, 2006 at his home. He was born September 19, 1924 in Brooklyn to Vern and Hazel (Miller) Kyser. Ronald married Barbara Tobias November 2, 1946 in Lansing and they made their home in Brooklyn where they raised their family.
Ronald was honorably discharged from the US Army serving in WWII. After retiring from Ford Motor Co., thirty years ago, Ronald and Barbara enjoyed spending winters in Lakeland, Fla. Through out the years Ronald enjoyed building various things such as go carts, doll houses complete with furniture, pole buildings, screened in porches and countless other things. The last few years he loved shooting pool and playing poker with his friends. A year ago Ronald and Barbara moved to Barryton to be closer to their family.
He is survived by his loving wife of 59 years, Barbara, of Barryton, son, Mitchell (Ginny) Kyser of Horton, two daughters, Linda (Jim) Ray of Barryton, and Carol (Floyd) Young of Lake City; six grandchildren and nine great grandchildren that he loved tremendously, one sister, Marge Gove and numerous cousins, nieces and nephews. Besides his parents he was preceded in death by two sisters, Arlene Beal and Shirley Lent.
Cremation has taken place and a graveside memorial service will take place at Highland Cemetery in Brooklyn on Sunday, May 21, 2006, at 1 p.m. Following the memorial service, the Kyser family would like to invite friends and family members to a luncheon and a time of fellowship at the Brooklyn American Legion Hall.
In lieu of flowers Memorial contributions in Ronald’s name may be made to Mercy Hospice 7985 Mackinaw Trail, Suite 100, Cadillac, Mich. 49601. Arrangements were entrusted to the Daggett Funeral Home, Barryton, Mich.
Frank M. Shaw
Frank M. Shaw, age 45 years of Hillsdale, formerly of the Hudson and Clayton area, passed away tragically, Saturday, May 6, 2006, from injuries sustained in a home fire. Born Feb. 4, 1961, in Hudson, he was the son of John and Nina (Easler) Shaw. He graduated from Hudson High School in 1979. Frank worked at Townsend Brothers Lumber in Clayton, Yukon Industries in Litchfield and Foam Aid in Hillsdale. Frank was a fun loving guy who didn’t know a stranger. He loved to tell jokes, had a great sense of humor and was very quick witted. He enjoyed taking different types of material and using his creative artistic talent to make things. He is going to be sadly missed by family and friends.
Surviving Frank are his sisters, Flora (Donald) “Buster” McLouth and Debbie (Brian) Salamin, all of Pittsford; brothers, Tim (Beth) Shaw of Addison and Rex (Amy) Shaw of Hudson; several aunts, uncles, nieces, nephews and cousins. He was preceded in death by his parents.
Memorial services will be held at 2 p.m. on Wednesday, May 10, 2006, in the Somerset Congregational Church in Somerset with Dr. John Reist officiating. Interment of ashes will take place at a later date in North Dover Cemetery. Visitation will be Tuesday, May 9, 2006, from 2 to 4 and 6 to 8 p.m. at the Brown-Van Hemert Funeral Home in Hudson. Memorials are suggested to the family to help with funeral expenses.
